00:01:42.679 And at that time I taught, Nathan taught, and Wes taught, and we would just kind of flip-flop every third time. 00:01:42.680 --> 00:01:49.820 But a book that we, a second book that we had done on Thursday nights was Philippians. 00:01:50.240 --> 00:01:58.400 And this came at a time when I was really deteriorating health-wise really, really fast. 00:01:58.900 --> 00:02:05.040 And I have, most of you know this, but I have cystic fibrosis, which is a lung disease. 00:02:05.040 --> 00:02:12.700 I could tell you more about it later, but not to get into all that, but just over time I was losing, like, all my lung function due to the disease. 00:02:13.020 --> 00:02:23.000 And around this time I had about, roughly about 20, 25 percent of lung function, my lung function. 00:02:23.140 for two weeks for IV medications and treatments and stuff. 00:02:47.259 --> 00:02:55.539 And it got to be a point where I was frequently spitting blood up and just a lot of bad things, not getting these Thursday nights, I was having to teach this Bible study wearing oxygen a lot of times. 00:03:33.060 --> 00:03:40.120 And so these texts in Philippians are very, very, like, vivid in my memory I had Jamie draw an S on to that because I got two and not one. 00:03:58.919 --> 00:04:06.219 So, but this was the book in Scripture we were studying, 00:04:06.340 --> 00:04:10.340 and it meant a lot to me as I was going through all this stuff. 00:04:10.399 --> 00:04:16.339 So it's very, very, speaks even now, very powerful. 00:04:16.339 --> 00:04:22.419 And having just come back from there and reminding myself, like, when you look at certain places and see certain people, 00:04:22.519 --> 00:04:26.599 it reminds you that, wow, I was here for almost a year and a half, you know. 00:04:26.799 --> 00:04:32.079 I spent almost a year and a half of my life here and through some difficult times. 00:04:32.199 --> 00:04:37.059 So I hope that this text will speak to you. 00:04:37.060 --> 00:04:42.759 And I was pondering a lot in my own life and death and those things. 00:04:42.980 --> 00:04:45.699 I had to plan my memorial service. 00:04:45.839 --> 00:04:46.420 I remember that. 00:04:46.519 --> 00:04:51.060 I remember sitting at Crimson Moon with Wes and Liz and talking about a lot of that. 00:04:51.540 --> 00:04:57.300 And so we're going to talk about four things that are in this text tonight. 00:04:57.300 --> 00:05:03.560 And the first one, number one, is what is Paul's dilemma? 00:05:04.759 --> 00:05:06.160 What is Paul's dilemma? 00:05:07.420 --> 00:05:11.620 And we're going to see this in verse 22 through 24. 00:05:11.620 --> 00:05:12.379 He says, 00:05:12.379 --> 00:05:35.000 So what is the dilemma here? 00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:45.000 Remember, he's under house arrest in Rome and he's kind of like, he's kind of doesn't really think he's going to be executed or put to death at this time. 00:05:45.060 --> 00:05:46.160 He thinks he's going to be released. 00:05:46.819 --> 00:05:52.259 But he's aware of just his own physical mortality, if you want to call it that. 00:05:52.300 --> 00:05:55.040 And so he's pondering a lot of these things. 00:05:55.040 --> 00:06:02.180 And so the key word phrase we're looking at is in verse 23 where it says, I'm hard pressed between the two. 00:06:02.379 --> 00:06:14.020 So hard pressed is a phrase that referred to like a traveler going on a very narrow path to where like it seemed like there's like a rock wall on both sides. 00:06:14.100 --> 00:06:16.280 And you can't go anywhere but just straight forward. 00:06:16.420 --> 00:06:18.320 You're just kind of hard pressed. 00:06:18.320 --> 00:06:24.340 So if you hike or climb, you've been in like situations like that where there's no other way than just this way. 00:06:25.040 --> 00:06:27.400 And you're just kind of pressed in. 00:06:27.860 --> 00:06:30.840 And he's stuck between two desires that he has. 00:06:30.960 --> 00:06:42.140 And the first desire is he really desires to remain alive and to continue to love, to minister, to serve, and to give his life away to the church and the believers. 00:06:43.320 --> 00:06:44.879 He has a deep longing for that. 00:06:44.879 --> 00:06:52.780 He wants to enable the Philippians to just grow further in their walk with Christ and see them mature in the faith. 00:06:52.779 --> 00:06:55.299 And that's his first desire. 00:06:55.399 --> 00:07:00.519 But the second one is he really desires just to pack it up and leave this world. 00:07:00.759 --> 00:07:04.199 He really wants to go and be with Christ. 00:07:05.299 --> 00:07:09.419 He is just to a point where he's tired of the fallen flesh. 00:07:09.419 --> 00:07:13.459 He's tired of seeing the devastating effects of sin. 00:07:13.459 --> 00:07:20.039 But a greater desire is he really just wants to be with Christ and dwell in Christ's presence for all eternity. 00:07:20.199 --> 00:07:22.579 That's really what his true desire is. 00:07:22.639 --> 00:07:24.139 And so he's saying, I'm hard pressed here. 00:07:25.219 --> 00:07:32.740 And in his mind, going to be with Christ is far more attractive at the moment. 00:07:32.740 --> 00:07:37.939 But yet, he really doesn't have the right to decide what he's going to do. 00:07:38.319 --> 00:07:39.860 So he recognizes that. 00:07:40.400 --> 00:07:46.060 He knows that God is the one who's going to sovereignly decide if he's going to live or if he's going to die. 00:07:46.060 --> 00:07:52.780 And so he's basically just like, Lord, I will joyfully accept whatever it is you bring my way. 00:07:52.779 --> 00:07:59.019 And so what probably happened is he's confident of his release. 00:08:00.439 --> 00:08:04.259 Back in the first message of this series, we got into this. 00:08:04.279 --> 00:08:05.899 This is around 61 A.D. 00:08:06.059 --> 00:08:11.439 And at this time, Christianity wasn't outlawed in the Roman Empire, not at this point. 00:08:12.079 --> 00:08:18.500 And he was hoping to go and appear before the emperor and be heard by the emperor in trial, 00:08:18.500 --> 00:08:24.579 which would have been Nero, but Nero liked his parties and he liked his wine, women, and song. 00:08:24.879 --> 00:08:29.000 And if something just kind of rolled around that wasn't that important, he wouldn't deal with it. 00:08:29.040 --> 00:08:34.080 He would just delegate it to, at this time, the empire, the commander of the Praetorian Guard. 00:08:34.820 --> 00:08:37.360 And ten other advisors, they would hear the case. 00:08:37.600 --> 00:08:46.200 And so, but most people and most Roman officials didn't consider things like these weird teachings 00:08:46.200 --> 00:08:49.520 coming out of a little desert land called Judea, any kind of threat. 00:08:49.700 --> 00:08:51.560 So they didn't really worry about it. 00:08:52.460 --> 00:08:54.700 Just as Pilate couldn't really find any fault with Jesus, 00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:59.080 and people couldn't find anything wrong with Paul multiple times. 00:08:59.400 --> 00:09:07.700 So he's confident that though he does believe he's going to be released 00:09:07.700 --> 00:09:11.780 and remain to minister to them, he's not afraid of death. 00:09:11.820 --> 00:09:13.360 And so he just kind of turned it over to God. 00:09:13.360 --> 00:09:15.420 Look at verse 19. 00:09:16.200 --> 00:09:20.480 For I know that through your prayers and help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 00:09:20.660 --> 00:09:22.879 this will turn out for my deliverance. 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:25.660 And then jump to verse 25 at the end. 00:09:25.720 --> 00:09:26.080 He says, 00:09:26.759 --> 00:09:28.120 Convinced of this, 00:09:28.759 --> 00:09:34.360 I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith, 00:09:34.900 --> 00:09:40.040 so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus because of my coming to you again. 00:09:40.039 --> 00:09:49.099 So he's pretty confident that he's going to be set free and he's going to continue to minister to the believers there. 00:09:49.100 --> 00:10:01.080 But I want to just kind of highlight just two reasons underneath why Paul desires to stay in the flesh. 00:10:02.320 --> 00:10:06.480 But number one, this is still underneath number one, Paul's dilemma. 00:10:06.480 --> 00:10:08.840 For the furtherance of the gospel. 00:10:09.000 --> 00:10:14.680 You can see that if you rewind a little bit and look at verse 12, he talks about the furtherance of the gospel. 00:10:15.440 --> 00:10:16.379 He's basically saying, 00:10:16.379 --> 00:10:21.399 If I live longer, I want to be advancing the gospel of Christ. 00:10:21.500 --> 00:10:26.360 I want to be proclaiming salvation in Christ to people that I'm around. 00:10:26.539 --> 00:10:28.820 I want to stay here for the advancement of the kingdom. 00:10:29.779 --> 00:10:32.460 And so he is ready for that. 00:10:32.539 --> 00:10:38.320 He's ready to kind of go all out and just declare Christ to the lost world. 00:10:38.480 --> 00:10:39.939 And so he longs for that. 00:10:39.940 --> 00:10:44.080 So this is a motivation that he has, a strong motivation. 00:10:44.900 --> 00:10:51.020 And so many people are longing for deliverance from darkness and sin and death. 00:10:51.680 --> 00:10:57.440 And I long to see many people come to know Christ. 00:11:41.860 --> 00:11:46.420 And if I think that I wouldn't be here to help him that, it would just grieve me. 00:11:46.480 --> 00:11:54.080 It would just make me, I want to stay here and proclaim Christ to them as long as God will allow me. 00:11:54.080 --> 00:11:59.580 And I want to see the nations come to know Christ. 00:11:59.680 --> 00:12:04.259 Those who live in a place where Christ is not allowed to be spoken. 00:12:04.440 --> 00:12:11.840 Our people don't know anything of Christ that live in complete darkness with no hope to be saved by the blood of Christ. 00:12:12.020 --> 00:12:16.139 So, this is a large motivation for why Paul was to stay. 00:12:16.240 --> 00:12:20.600 And it definitely is one of mine because I had to ponder these things. 00:12:20.600 --> 00:12:26.100 And so, that's the first one is just a motivation of his. 00:12:26.200 --> 00:12:28.139 He wants to stay to see the gospel advance. 00:12:28.240 --> 00:12:32.139 He wants to, the Lord's like, there's a fight going on down here. 00:12:32.220 --> 00:12:33.080 I'm advancing my kingdom. 00:12:33.259 --> 00:12:35.580 Paul's like, I'll stay as long as you want me to. 00:12:35.980 --> 00:12:37.060 Get me in that fight. 00:12:37.139 --> 00:12:40.399 That's kind of how he's thinking here. 00:12:40.399 --> 00:12:49.139 But, further on, you see that he, you read this at the end of verse 25. 00:12:49.439 --> 00:12:53.299 He wants to stay for their progress and joy in the faith. 00:12:53.779 --> 00:12:56.139 So, not just for the lost, but for the believers. 00:12:56.259 --> 00:12:58.340 He wants to see them grow and mature in Christ. 00:12:58.340 --> 00:13:04.500 And so, as your faith increases and as your faith strengthens in Christ, so does your joy. 00:13:04.620 --> 00:13:05.879 They're like connected. 00:13:06.040 --> 00:13:13.019 So, your joy in Christ grows stronger and stronger as your faith in him increases. 00:13:13.180 --> 00:13:17.120 And he wants to stay to encourage that in is just kind of a mindset Paul has throughout a lot of the things that he does. 00:14:56.139 --> 00:14:59.259 Philippians 2 Corinthians 5, verse 6. 00:14:59.259 --> 00:15:02.759 So, we are always of good courage. 00:15:03.279 --> 00:15:08.439 We know that while we are at home in the body, we are away from the Lord. 00:15:09.559 --> 00:15:11.340 So, that's us right now. 00:15:12.340 --> 00:15:14.600 For we walk by faith and not by sight. 00:15:15.460 --> 00:15:17.019 Yes, we are of good courage. 00:15:17.139 --> 00:15:21.539 And we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 00:15:21.539 --> 00:15:30.399 So, whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him or to honor him, to give him joy. 00:15:31.819 --> 00:15:32.219 Verse 10. 00:15:32.879 --> 00:15:41.799 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or for evil. 00:15:41.799 --> 00:15:52.819 So, Paul is like saying, like, whenever we are in the body or we are at the way of the Lord, we make it our goal, our aim, our purpose to honor him, to please him. 00:15:53.319 --> 00:15:59.219 And this is just a mindset he had throughout his life. 00:15:59.220 --> 00:16:10.019 And so, I'm aware that even in this moment, like, God has allowed me to, like, stand here in front of 00:17:48.879 And now, behold, I'm going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, 00:17:49.479 --> 00:17:55.159 except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city and imprisonment that afflictions await me. 00:17:55.919 --> 00:17:57.179 So Paul understands. 00:17:58.139 --> 00:18:03.159 He doesn't know exactly what's going to happen for some people who tend to over-spiritualize matters. 00:18:03.160 --> 00:18:07.340 Paul's not getting, like, a word from God saying, if you go to Jerusalem, you're going to die. 00:18:08.279 --> 00:18:14.640 He just is aware that, like, wherever he goes, there's going to be affliction and suffering and pain. 00:18:14.800 --> 00:18:16.420 And so this is what happened. 00:18:16.500 --> 00:18:19.680 This is where he was finally arrested for good in Jerusalem. 00:18:19.680 --> 00:18:22.320 So verse 24, 00:18:22.320 --> 00:18:33.640 But I do not account my life of any value, nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course in the ministry that I have received from the Lord Jesus, 00:18:34.220 --> 00:18:38.240 to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. 00:18:38.779 --> 00:18:41.259 And that's such an awesome focus. 00:18:41.400 --> 00:18:48.060 And this is in light of him going to a place where he knows he's going to, like, get some serious affliction and persecution. 00:18:48.059 --> 00:18:50.480 And he's like, I don't count my life of any value. 00:18:50.579 --> 00:18:53.960 I just want Christ to be glorified. 00:18:54.039 --> 00:18:59.720 I want to finish the course in the these are the reasons he wants to remain behind is the advancement of the gospel and seeing believers grow in joy in their faith. 00:19:12.160 --> 00:19:19.920 So the second thing of all this is what is the chief aim of Paul's existence? 00:19:20.920 --> 00:19:23.300 What is the chief aim of Paul's existence? 00:19:24.380 --> 00:19:26.660 And back in Philippians, look at verse 20. 00:19:26.860 --> 00:19:28.340 We're going to see this. 00:19:28.420 --> 00:19:33.200 And this is one of those passages that require memorization. 00:19:33.360 --> 00:19:33.820 They're amazing. 00:19:33.819 --> 00:19:35.379 Verse 20. 00:19:35.500 --> 00:19:50.039 It is my eager expectation and hope that I will not at all be put ashamed, but that with full courage, now as always, Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. 00:19:51.159 --> 00:19:55.319 And so this is the aim of Paul's existence. 00:19:55.319 --> 00:20:00.519 And look at that phrase there, my eager expectation and hope. 00:20:01.159 --> 00:20:14.839 It means that he's readily, fervently, keenly anticipating the future to where I think it kind of refers to like somebody who's like kind of like going like this and really trying to look to see like what is coming. 00:20:15.659 --> 00:20:23.480 Like he's eagerly waiting for this hope that he has in Christ and the promises he has in Christ to be fulfilled. 00:20:23.480 --> 00:20:27.360 But then he says that Christ would be honored. 00:20:28.319 --> 00:20:34.099 Or you could insert a word glorified or magnified or exalted. 00:20:34.620 --> 00:20:42.079 And this is his aim in life that no matter what happens, Christ would be magnified, glorified. 00:20:42.440 --> 00:20:46.920 And so his all-embracing passion was to see the glory of Christ. resolutions that he wrote out for his life. 00:27:52.380 --> 00:27:55.799 And just sought to like follow those things daily. 00:27:55.940 --> 00:28:01.480 But one of the first ones he wrote about was how he just desired to glorify Christ above all things. 00:28:01.640 --> 00:28:04.160 To do all things to the glory of God. 00:28:04.160 --> 00:28:07.620 But he gets down to resolution 23 and he says,
