So let's have a quick recap of some of the stuff we did in the 00:02:09.939 --> 00:02:17.259 earlier weeks. So we are creatures. We are fundamentally made of dust. And so we are entirely 00:02:17.259 --> 00:02:23.000 dependent on God for life and breath and everything. But also we are more than just creatures, aren't we? 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:29.699 We are the crown of creation. We're made in God's image, in his likeness. And no other creature is 00:02:29.699 --> 00:02:36.699 made like that. We're made to reflect and represent God. So we're made in knowledge and righteousness 00:02:36.699 --> 00:02:41.840 and holiness, meaning we're rational creatures, we're moral creatures, and we're relational creatures. 00:02:42.920 --> 00:02:48.060 And also we are vice regents. We're under kings. We have dominion over creation. 00:02:48.060 --> 00:02:56.300 And so we are unique and special creatures. We have inherent dignity. We aren't just a bag of cells. 00:02:56.920 --> 00:03:02.759 No human life, it's infinitely valuable. And we also saw that we are covenantal creatures. So we are made for him. We're made to worship him, made to obey his law, love him, follow him, 00:03:17.620 --> 00:03:24.300 enjoy him, dwell with him. In summary, we're made to worship God. That's in our design, in our blueprint. 00:03:25.439 --> 00:03:32.939 And this is how we are to be truly human. This is what it means to be truly fulfilled and flourish 00:03:32.939 --> 00:03:43.319 and thrive in this life. And so far in this series, we have been following, focusing on the blueprint of 00:03:43.319 --> 00:03:50.139 how God has designed us. So all of this has been before the fall, hasn't it? How we were originally 00:03:50.139 --> 00:03:58.079 designed, the purpose and the goodness of it. So at the end of day six, God said, looks at humanity and 00:03:58.079 --> 00:04:04.379 said, this is very good. And so we've been seeing what it means to be very good, how we should be. 00:04:04.379 --> 00:04:14.479 But something has happened since then. The fall has happened. And we naturally now aren't what we 00:04:14.479 --> 00:04:21.480 are designed to be anymore. We're designed to be with God and know God and love God. Our hearts 00:04:21.480 --> 00:04:29.519 are made to be directed to God in worship. And we're made to be truly human in our callings as men and 00:04:29.519 --> 00:04:35.859 women. Images of God in true knowledge and righteousness and holiness. But all that has 00:04:35.859 --> 00:04:43.620 changed since the fall. And I want us to really see today that something has drastically changed 00:04:43.620 --> 00:04:55.500 in us. And I want us to ask, what exactly are we now? How can we understand ourselves now? If we've 00:04:55.500 --> 00:05:01.360 just been looking at how we were originally and intentionally designed, then what has humanity 00:05:01.360 --> 00:05:10.120 become now? And to answer that, we need to look at the fall. So if Genesis 1 and 2 is the blueprint of 00:05:10.120 --> 00:05:18.740 true humanity, what we're designed to be, Genesis 3 is the blueprint of fallen, sinful humanity. 00:05:18.740 --> 00:05:28.740 true humanity. And all this is really important to understand. Because if we understand this, we 00:05:28.740 --> 00:05:36.439 understand our own hearts. We will understand what's going on inside of us every day. And 00:05:36.439 --> 00:05:43.680 also, it's helpful, necessary for us to understand what's going on in this crazy world all around 00:05:43.680 --> 00:05:51.300 us. Okay? And our understanding of sin and the fall and fallen humanity, what we are now, 00:05:52.280 --> 00:05:57.379 when we understand that, it will begin to answer all those questions. And so let's look at the fall. 00:05:57.500 --> 00:06:02.860 The first point I have, the fall, I want to see that we have changed. We have changed. Let's read 00:06:02.860 --> 00:06:11.420 Genesis 3 together. I want us to read this whole chapter. And really listen as we're reading, because 00:06:11.420 --> 00:06:14.840 I've got some questions. We're going to break out into groups after this, and we're going to answer 00:06:14.840 --> 00:06:22.340 questions about this passage. So really keep an eye out for all these details. changed in us the blueprint of god's original design was 00:22:38.599 --> 00:22:46.759 one way but now we aren't like that anymore we are now a broken corrupted distorted version of that 00:22:46.759 --> 00:22:58.199 design in a word we have become sinners we don't just do sinful things now we are sinners and this is 00:22:58.199 --> 00:23:04.379 the first sub point i want us to see we are sinners so so so what have we seen so far if this is how we 00:23:04.380 --> 00:23:12.120 were designed for god's uh to be for us to be dependent on god and man to be head over and love and protect is is now seeking to be head of man and so there's a destruction 00:23:28.420 --> 00:23:36.200 and a disunity and a brokenness there and there's a brokenness but between the dominion of uh of our 00:23:36.200 --> 00:23:42.220 dominion over creation and in our broken moral compass what do we think about god we think we can 00:23:42.220 --> 00:23:48.580 rule over god we don't need god but we can define good and evil for ourselves and we're separated from 00:23:48.580 --> 00:23:55.340 from god he casts us out the garden and so there is a break there's an inversion and a break of god's design your handouts so just a few chapters after the fall look how god 00:24:11.699 --> 00:24:20.839 sees humanity so genesis 6 5 the lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that like do you see how 00:24:33.279 --> 00:24:39.319 just all these words of wickedness and sin that they're just heaped up on top of each other 00:24:39.319 --> 00:24:43.639 every intention not just one intention every intention 00:24:43.640 --> 00:24:50.440 of the thoughts of his heart was only evil not sometimes continually 00:24:50.440 --> 00:25:01.600 god says we are not good we are evil all our intentions and thoughts and desires are only evil 00:25:01.600 --> 00:25:09.160 continually we don't get a break from being sinners in this life we always are and notice the contrast 00:25:09.160 --> you murder someone you are murdering the image of god and so it's such a travesty because 00:26:39.639 --> 00:26:46.539 it's such a precious thing and genesis 3 9 uh james 3 9 sorry um he talks about how bad cursing is 00:26:46.539 --> 00:26:52.420 and it's so bad because other people are made in the likeness of god so so we are still the image 00:26:52.420 --> 00:27:03.319 but now we are a broken image a corrupted distorted image so if we are designed to reflect god we're 00:27:03.319 --> 00:27:11.259 designed to be mirrors reflecting who god is and be an image of who he is you can now think of us 00:27:11.259 --> 00:27:18.480 we are shattered mirrors or think about you know those bended warped mirrors you can get at like 00:27:18.480 --> 00:27:25.039 in a house of mirrors in a fun fair and you look at it and it's reflecting something but it doesn't 00:27:25.039 --> 00:27:33.160 reflect who you are very well at all does it it's all distorted and warped and it's it's a weird version tragedy and just so awful because we should be something so 00:27:53.960 --> 00:28:00.200 much better we've fallen from such a great height so it's like if i if i just made on a scrap bit of 00:28:26.460 that right well that is why to be a sinner is such a bad thing we have screwed up the mona lisa 00:28:26.460 --> 00:28:35.579 and so how can we sum up what it means to be a broken image
