shack that was normally 00:09:05.679 --> 00:09:07.199 used to shelter animals. 00:09:11.439 --> 00:09:15.759 I want you to pick up, if you would, there in verse 8 and just remind yourself of how the 00:09:15.759 --> 00:09:17.019 Christmas story plays out. 00:09:17.659 --> 00:09:24.399 And we read there that the angel of the Lord in verse 9 appears to these shepherds that were 00:09:24.399 --> 00:09:26.159 marked out in verse 8. 00:09:26.319 --> 00:09:27.399 They're out in the field. 00:09:27.559 --> 00:09:29.120 They're taking care of sheep. 00:09:29.120 --> 00:09:39.399 And we have kind of idealized shepherds and sheep because, you know, after all, it's part of Christmas. 00:09:39.840 --> 00:09:43.919 And by the way, how many of you know that bales of hay were like nine bucks a bale? of you have those questions? 00:10:44.279 --> 00:10:44.959 Well, I'm a doctor. 00:10:45.939 --> 00:10:47.099 I'm a shepherd. 00:10:47.359 --> 00:10:47.799 What? 00:10:48.339 --> 00:10:53.119 And it says this, that the Egyptians abhorred. 00:10:54.179 --> 00:10:58.059 Shepherds were an abomination to Egyptians. 00:10:58.059 --> 00:11:05.479 Now, the Bible picture of shepherds is a little more positive. 00:11:05.679 --> 00:11:08.539 I mean, after all, how many of you know the shepherd's psalm? 00:11:08.599 --> 00:11:09.719 I mean, every one of us, right? 00:11:09.839 --> 00:11:12.079 Psalm 23, the Lord is my shepherd. 00:11:12.659 --> 00:11:17.699 And we think about the fact that God in his care for us, he's like a shepherd. 00:11:19.119 --> 00:11:23.899 In fact, Old Testament kings like to carry that idea a little bit. 00:11:23.899 --> 00:11:28.139 But it was more idealized than in practical reality because the truth of the matter is 00:11:28.139 --> 00:11:34.539 is that shepherds were not well regarded in Jewish culture. 00:11:34.740 --> 00:11:45.379 So much so that if Jim Bob had seen Bubba murdering Sally. 00:11:46.860 --> 00:11:47.360 You got that? 00:11:47.500 --> 00:11:48.639 I mean, are we tracking so far? 00:11:48.639 --> 00:11:53.720 Jim Bob saw Bubba murder Sally, and Jim Bob was a shepherd. 00:11:54.379 --> 00:11:58.000 When they asked publicly, did anybody see Bubba murder Sally? 00:11:58.240 --> 00:12:00.500 And Jim Bob raised his hand and said, I did. 00:12:01.259 --> 00:12:02.980 They'd say, disqualified. 00:12:04.080 --> 00:12:08.759 Shepherds were not allowed to ever give testimony publicly. 00:12:13.279 --> 00:12:15.379 God chose a shepherd group. 00:12:18.639 --> 00:12:21.519 To be the ones that he announced the coming of his go a different way. 00:13:26.019 --> 00:13:27.680 And as a result of that, 00:13:27.680 --> 00:13:31.779 Herod slaughtered all the children in that area up to two years old. 00:13:31.779 --> 00:13:42.139 Shepherds and pagans were the first ones who were given advice 00:13:42.139 --> 00:13:45.559 about the coming of Christ, Joseph and Mary. 00:13:46.839 --> 00:13:49.179 And so I want you go-between. 00:15:20.860 --> 00:15:24.319 Remember when Moses went up the mount to receive the law 00:15:24.319 --> 00:15:27.439 and God revealed himself to the nation of Israel 00:15:27.439 --> 00:15:30.240 and he comes back, Moses comes back, 00:15:30.299 --> 00:15:33.439 and he lays out the glory of the revelation of God 00:15:33.439 --> 00:15:37.879 and the people, they're kind of overwhelmed by the reality 00:15:37.879 --> 00:15:41.480 of the glory of God and the word that he has for them. 00:15:41.480 --> 00:15:45.259 And they say, Moses, Moses, would you do the talking with him 00:15:45.259 --> 00:15:48.060 and then you come down here and communicate with us? 00:15:48.200 --> 00:15:49.259 We're terrified. 00:15:52.139 --> 00:15:58.740 God in his awesome glory, knowing our frame and our dust, 00:16:02.320 --> 00:16:05.720 chose to come with unbelievable humility 00:16:05.720 --> 00:16:11.259 and in that humility to reveal himself as our Savior. 00:16:11.480 --> 00:16:17.379 I do want you to understand this issue of God coming down, for one, 00:16:18.100 --> 00:16:21.379 reflects this matter of humility in a profound fashion. 00:16:21.580 --> 00:16:22.980 about Isaiah chapter 66 where it says this, 00:16:49.799 --> 00:16:51.919 that the prophet recounts and says, 00:16:52.060 --> 00:16:54.620 who is it that God reveals himself to? 00:16:54.620 --> 00:17:02.279 The one who is humble and broken and trembles at my word. 00:17:03.620 --> 00:17:08.599 I couldn't help as I was praying earlier today 00:17:08.599 --> 00:17:11.460 to stop and think about the culture we have 00:17:11.460 --> 00:17:14.759 that pushes against the idea of humility. 00:17:16.940 --> 00:17:19.500 I mean, what kid doesn't go to school 00:17:19.500 --> 00:17:21.480 and hear about from the time they walk in 00:17:21.480 --> 00:17:22.579 through the doors of the school 00:17:22.579 --> 00:17:24.480 to the time they at least come out. 00:17:24.700 --> 00:17:26.360 At least in the professional context, 00:17:26.480 --> 00:17:28.960 you're special, you're the best, you're the winner. 00:17:29.140 --> 00:17:31.779 Everybody gets, you know, we're full of ourselves.
