Genesis is the very first book in the Bible, so it's easy to find. 00:00:48.240 --> 00:00:56.079 And it tells the story of the origin of the world and also the origin of Israel, God's people, beginning with Abraham. 00:00:56.719 --> 00:01:05.040 We're actually not going to cover the entire book of Genesis. We are just focusing on the story of Abraham in Genesis 11 through 25. 00:01:05.680 --> 00:01:10.920 And the reason we're focusing in on that is to prepare us to return to our series in the book of 00:01:36.099 Last week, we saw that Abraham and his nephew Lot had to separate. 00:01:36.400 --> 00:01:37.539 This is chapter 13. 00:01:37.980 --> 00:01:42.239 They had both become so wealthy that the land could not support both of them. 00:01:42.299 --> 00:01:44.960 They didn't have enough water, enough grass. 00:01:44.959 --> 00:01:47.979 And so they have to go to different pieces of land. 00:01:48.479 --> 00:01:49.659 Lot picks first. 00:01:50.139 --> 00:01:55.859 And you'll remember he picks the very best piece of land with one exception. 00:01:57.239 --> 00:02:02.659 He picks apart a parcel of land right next to Sodom, a place of great sin. 00:02:02.659 --> 00:02:09.719 And so we saw Lot is willing to cozy up to wickedness for the sake of comfort. 00:02:10.620 --> 00:02:17.780 He gives in to the temptation to put the good life as first and more important than the kingdom. 00:02:18.620 --> 00:02:23.659 This week, we're going to see very quickly Lot suffering because of his poor Amen. 00:06:26.720 --> 00:06:30.780 In December of 2003, 00:06:31.560 --> 00:06:35.639 a man named Nick Berg decided to leave his hometown 00:06:35.639 --> 00:06:38.120 of Westchester, Pennsylvania, 00:06:38.379 --> 00:06:39.780 which is right outside of Philly, 00:06:40.120 --> 00:06:44.139 and he left it for the country of Iraq. 00:06:44.139 --> 00:06:46.339 He made this decision. 00:06:46.539 --> 00:06:48.579 It had taken Nick a while to figure out 00:06:48.579 --> 00:06:50.279 what he wanted to do with his life, 00:06:50.479 --> 00:06:53.719 but he settled on starting a company 00:06:53.719 --> 00:06:56.779 that would install and repair radio towers. 00:06:57.419 --> 00:06:59.120 He decided that was going to be his life's work. 00:06:59.839 --> 00:07:00.620 And you may remember, 00:07:00.740 --> 00:07:04.379 December of 2003 was right after the fall of Saddam Hussein. 00:07:05.060 --> 00:07:07.939 And so he sees this incredible business opportunity. 00:07:08.599 --> 00:07:09.039 Guess what? 00:07:09.099 --> 00:07:11.099 Their infrastructure's been destroyed, 00:07:11.100 --> 00:07:13.580 and I'm going to be the one to come in 00:07:13.580 --> 00:07:15.540 and save the day and make all the money. 00:07:16.340 --> 00:07:20.180 I'll repair radio towers that have been hurt, injured. 00:07:20.640 --> 00:07:22.040 I'll install new ones. 00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:24.180 Everything will be great. 00:07:25.060 --> 00:07:27.140 Nick's friends and family were appalled, 00:07:27.560 --> 00:07:32.439 and they warned him, urged him not to go. 00:07:33.580 --> 00:07:36.780 Nick, however, saw only the benefits 00:07:36.779 --> 00:07:39.559 and none of the dangers. 00:07:40.739 --> 00:07:42.019 And so seeing only benefits, 00:07:42.119 --> 00:07:45.199 he separates himself from the land 00:07:45.199 --> 00:07:48.479 and the protection of the United States. 00:07:49.779 --> 00:07:52.179 Nick Burke's family then is left wondering 00:07:52.179 --> 00:07:56.119 what is going to happen to Nick. 00:07:58.179 --> 00:08:00.399 That's similar to the situation 00:08:00.399 --> 00:08:03.639 we find ourselves here in this passage this morning. 00:08:03.739 --> 00:08:05.479 You might see where I'm headed with this. 00:08:05.480 --> 00:08:08.860 Lot has separated himself 00:08:08.860 --> 00:08:12.360 from the land and the protection of God. 00:08:13.500 --> 00:08:16.580 Lot sees all the benefits, 00:08:17.439 --> 00:08:22.020 comes to terms with none of the dangers. 00:08:22.759 --> 00:08:24.020 Remember, chapter 13, 00:08:24.300 --> 00:08:26.140 he and Abraham have to split. 00:08:26.520 --> 00:08:27.819 They head in different ways. 00:08:28.240 --> 00:08:30.580 He looks out, he sees the Jordan Valley, 00:08:30.680 --> 00:08:33.220 and for him it is only beautiful and alluring. 00:08:33.220 --> 00:08:36.139 It's this place of wealth and prosperity, 00:08:36.360 --> 00:08:38.840 somewhere where he's confident he's going to thrive, 00:08:39.200 --> 00:08:44.120 and yet we have the hint of coming tragedy, 00:08:44.480 --> 00:08:45.920 not once but twice. 00:08:46.259 --> 00:08:47.620 As he's picking it, 00:08:47.940 --> 00:08:49.080 remember, we're told, 00:08:49.740 --> 00:08:53.960 this was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:08:55.100 --> 00:08:56.580 And then in verse 13, it says, 00:08:56.580 --> 00:08:58.420 now the men of Sodom were wicked, 00:08:58.940 --> 00:09:01.820 great sinners against the Lord. 00:09:02.480 --> 00:09:04.660 So like Nick Burke's friends, 00:09:05.040 --> 00:09:07.320 the careful listener here is wondering 00:09:07.320 --> 00:09:10.960 what is going to happen to Lot. 00:09:11.540 --> 00:09:15.860 We know it will not end well. 00:09:17.240 --> 00:09:19.639 There's a lot going on in the first, 00:09:20.040 --> 00:09:21.920 say, 13 verses, 12 verses, 00:09:21.919 --> 00:09:24.519 so I'm just going to summarize it for you very briefly. 00:09:25.379 --> 00:09:27.159 In verses 1 through 9, 00:09:27.559 --> 00:09:29.819 there is a geopolitical conflict 00:09:29.819 --> 00:09:31.679 that involves a lot of kings. 00:09:32.579 --> 00:09:35.599 We might even say it's not a geopolitical conflict, 00:09:35.759 --> 00:09:37.719 but geopolitical conflicts, 00:09:38.219 --> 00:09:39.819 because there's so much going on. 00:09:40.819 --> 00:09:42.939 Why do we care about this conflict? 00:09:43.479 --> 00:09:45.579 We care, we first find out, 00:09:45.659 --> 00:09:47.120 in verse 2 and verse 8, 00:09:47.120 --> 00:09:49.100 because Sodom is involved. 00:09:50.200 --> 00:09:51.960 And if Sodom is involved, 00:09:52.320 --> 00:09:53.720 then Lot is involved. 00:09:53.960 --> 00:09:55.340 That helps us understand why, 00:09:55.440 --> 00:09:56.720 in the midst of the story of Abraham, 00:09:56.899 --> 00:09:59.299 we suddenly are told about these 10 plus kings 00:09:59.299 --> 00:10:00.840 who are fighting with each other. 00:10:01.720 --> 00:10:06.060 Last week, we were told that Lot moved right next to Sodom. 00:10:07.740 --> 00:10:12.700 Did you notice what we find out in verse 12 of this week? 00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:14.560 He's not right next to Sodom. 00:10:14.559 --> 00:10:18.239 He is dwelling in Sodom. 00:10:19.159 --> 00:10:22.159 The danger of him setting up camp so close 00:10:22.159 --> 00:10:25.579 to these sinful people is coming true. 00:10:26.919 --> 00:10:28.339 So they have the conflict. 00:10:29.279 --> 00:10:30.159 Sodom's involved. 00:10:30.799 --> 00:10:32.039 Verses 10 and 11, 00:10:32.339 --> 00:10:33.559 Sodom is defeated, 00:10:34.279 --> 00:10:36.059 which means, verse 12, 00:10:36.199 --> 00:10:38.519 there is a lot of collateral damage, 00:10:39.039 --> 00:10:39.919 including Lot. 00:10:40.839 --> 00:10:44.199 Lot and all of his things are taken. 00:10:45.139 --> 00:10:48.059 That is the point of verses 1 through 13. 00:10:48.559 --> 00:10:50.459 Big conflict, lots of kings, 00:10:50.779 --> 00:10:51.419 Sodom's involved, 00:10:51.500 --> 00:10:52.439 because Sodom's involved, 00:10:52.719 --> 00:10:54.000 things don't end well for Lot. 00:10:54.779 --> 00:10:56.479 Which takes us back to our question, 00:10:58.399 --> 00:11:02.299 what does God do with the foolishness of his people? 00:11:04.199 --> 00:11:05.759 Lot, this is not an accident. 00:11:06.099 --> 00:11:08.439 He's not merely a victim of circumstance. 00:11:08.440 --> 00:11:14.240 He has made a foolish choice to move to a sinful place. 00:11:14.980 --> 00:11:16.420 Now, I want to note at this point, 00:11:16.600 --> 00:11:18.780 Lot is a very complicated figure. 00:11:19.320 --> 00:11:21.620 If we just had chapter 13, 00:11:21.800 --> 00:11:22.500 you might think, 00:11:22.720 --> 00:11:24.880 you know, Lot has no relationship with God. 00:11:25.120 --> 00:11:26.640 But actually, the New Testament 00:11:26.640 --> 00:11:28.760 only speaks positively of Lot. 00:11:29.320 --> 00:11:32.820 2 Peter chapter 2 tells us he is a righteous man. 00:11:32.820 --> 00:11:34.820 It speaks well of Lot 00:11:34.820 --> 00:11:37.300 that of all the people who did not go with Abraham, 00:11:37.740 --> 00:11:39.240 he actually goes with him, right, 00:11:39.280 --> 00:11:41.400 when he leaves his father's land. 00:11:42.900 --> 00:11:48.400 And Lot is deeply flawed and wildly foolish. 00:11:48.399 --> 00:11:51.059 So what is God going to do? 00:11:52.179 --> 00:11:54.299 Especially when Lot's predicament 00:11:54.299 --> 00:11:56.439 is because of Lot's decisions. 00:11:57.279 --> 00:11:59.579 Well, we find out right away. 00:12:00.879 --> 00:12:01.539 Verse 13, 00:12:02.639 --> 00:12:06.279 God shows Lot tremendous grace. 00:12:07.639 --> 00:12:09.620 And he shows Lot tremendous grace 00:12:09.620 --> 00:12:11.819 in the way I mentioned in our confession of faith, 00:12:11.919 --> 00:12:13.059 by his providence. 00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:17.399 It just so happens that one man escapes. 00:12:18.399 --> 00:12:20.980 And this doesn't have to happen, 00:12:21.120 --> 00:12:22.840 but not only does that man escape, 00:12:23.100 --> 00:12:25.759 he runs and he tells Abraham. 00:12:26.860 --> 00:12:29.600 In God's providential care, 00:12:30.879 --> 00:12:34.620 Lot's story is not over. 00:12:37.679 --> 00:12:40.000 What is God's response 00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:41.579 to the foolishness of his people? 00:12:43.240 --> 00:12:47.980 His response is one of great grace 00:12:47.980 --> 00:12:50.879 and undeserved mercy. 00:12:53.440 --> 00:12:54.580 Brothers and sisters, 00:12:55.080 --> 00:12:57.340 that is God's response 00:12:57.340 --> 00:12:59.879 to our foolishness as well. 00:13:02.700 --> 00:13:03.639 Outside of that, 00:13:04.180 --> 00:13:05.580 we really don't have much hope. 00:13:08.220 --> 00:13:10.759 As we've been looking at Abraham and Lot's story 00:13:10.759 --> 00:13:12.180 over the last few weeks, 00:13:12.600 --> 00:13:13.700 you might have been thinking, 00:13:13.860 --> 00:13:15.480 man, maybe some of my priorities 00:13:15.480 --> 00:13:16.379 are out of order. 00:13:17.420 --> 00:13:18.560 Maybe there are things 00:13:18.560 --> 00:13:20.320 that I have valued above God 00:13:20.320 --> 00:13:21.800 and his kingdom and his mission. 00:13:23.060 --> 00:13:24.860 Chapter 14 reminds us 00:13:24.860 --> 00:13:28.539 there is still so much grace. 00:13:30.200 --> 00:13:31.879 God is still protecting 00:13:31.879 --> 00:13:34.300 and pursuing his people. 00:13:34.299 --> 00:13:39.699 God is still watching out for you. 00:13:39.699 --> 00:13:41.639 God is still watching out for you. 00:13:41.639 --> 00:13:43.699 God is still watching out for you. 00:13:43.699 --> foolishness, 00:13:59.639 --> 00:14:00.759 our foolishness, 00:14:01.480 --> 00:14:02.159 stupidity, 00:14:03.000 --> 00:14:03.860 short-sightedness. 00:14:05.240 --> 00:14:06.719 And so in Lot's story here, 00:14:06.779 --> 00:14:07.600 we see two things. 00:14:08.199 --> 00:14:09.719 We see an encouragement 00:14:09.719 --> 00:14:11.379 and a warning. 00:14:12.559 --> 00:14:14.039 Encouragement, I've already told you. 00:14:15.019 --> 00:14:17.819 God shows great grace to his people 00:14:17.819 --> 00:14:20.079 even when they are deeply flawed 00:14:20.079 --> 00:14:21.199 and sinful. 00:14:21.200 --> 00:14:24.480 If you belong to him, 00:14:25.560 --> 00:14:29.080 God has not given up on you 00:14:29.080 --> 00:14:33.300 no matter where you are. 00:14:35.360 --> and fellowship with God 00:15:18.519 --> 00:15:19.919 that Abraham does. 00:15:21.879 --> 00:15:24.180 Lot will not be a blessing to the nations 00:15:24.180 --> 00:15:26.419 in the way that Abraham will. 00:15:27.919 --> 00:15:29.200 And Lot's descendants 00:15:29.200 --> 00:15:31.460 are going to suffer 00:15:31.460 --> 00:15:33.159 from his unfaithfulness. 00:15:34.379 --> 00:15:35.960 As we watch the story 00:15:35.960 --> 00:15:37.460 of the Old Testament play out, 00:15:37.560 --> 00:15:38.779 there is a tragedy 00:15:38.779 --> 00:15:40.980 for those who are born from Lot. 00:15:40.980 --> 00:15:43.639 They are going to have 00:15:43.639 --> 00:15:44.940 one foot in 00:15:44.940 --> 00:15:46.399 and one foot out 00:15:46.399 --> 00:15:47.139 of God's people. 00:15:47.300 --> 00:15:49.840 They will be half-hearted at best 00:15:49.840 --> 00:15:52.580 and apostate at worst. 00:15:53.720 --> 00:15:55.100 So there's an encouragement. 00:15:57.120 -->
