that the Baptist Confession says are wrong as a result of the fall of humanity. 00:03:34.560 --> 00:03:39.259 And we're going to work through a sort of adapted list of those because I've changed the wording of them slightly. 00:03:40.039 --> 00:03:40.840 So let me take you through. 00:03:40.899 --> 00:03:45.159 The first thing that the Baptist Confession will tell you is wrong with the world is that this is no longer Eden. 00:03:45.620 --> 00:03:47.180 Now, in a sense, that is obvious, right? 00:03:47.180 --> 00:03:48.719 We don't live in the Garden of Eden. 00:03:48.719 --> 00:03:50.259 This is not paradise. 00:03:50.500 --> 00:03:52.379 But that's not really what the confession means. 00:03:52.500 --> 00:03:58.759 It means that you and I no longer live with the privileges of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. 00:03:59.159 --> 00:04:01.379 In other words, they were in a unique position. 00:04:01.379 --> 00:04:04.620 They fell from a unique position. 00:04:05.159 --> 00:04:10.159 And in them, all of humanity were exiled from Eden and lost its privileges. 00:04:11.159 --> 00:04:13.939 Chapter six, paragraph one starts like this. 00:04:13.939 --> 00:04:17.699 God created man upright and perfect. 00:04:18.379 --> 00:04:25.980 He gave them a righteous law that would have led to life if they had kept it, but threatened death if they broke it. 00:04:25.980 --> 00:05:18.479 Adam was righteous in a way that we are not. 00:05:18.480 --> 00:05:23.840 He was without sin and was in a relationship with God with whom he walked and talked. 00:05:24.580 --> you followed the ways of the world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 00:07:45.939 --> 00:07:51.939 We are dead in sin, says Paul. 00:07:52.600 --> 00:07:58.240 Just like Adam and Eve died in the garden, so we too are born dead in sin. 00:07:58.620 --> 00:08:05.159 That's why Jesus says to Nicodemus that he must be born again because by nature he is dead in his sin. 00:08:05.680 --> 00:08:09.939 The problem with all humanity stemming back from the fall is that we're born dead to God. 00:08:10.659 --> 00:08:13.720 Now that doesn't mean, does it, that everyone is as bad as they could be. 00:08:13.720 --> 00:08:15.480 That is not what the point is. 00:08:15.939 --> 00:08:21.879 It means that we are incapable of responding doesn't mean that we don't ever have any thought of the divine. 00:08:31.939 --> 00:08:35.320 And it doesn't mean that we are incapable of doing anything that is morally good. 00:08:35.639 --> righteousness of pre-fall Adam. 00:08:44.440 --> 00:08:53.380 And so it's right, isn't it, that we understand that everybody that we meet, ourselves outside of Christ, are not neutral to God. representatives of all mankind. 00:09:16.160 --> 00:09:17.340 That's what we were saying before, isn't it? 00:09:17.340 --> 00:09:19.980 Humanity is on their shoulders. 00:09:20.120 --> 00:09:24.759 They're in probation in the garden or humanity is in probation in the garden in there. 00:09:24.759 --> 00:09:37.759 Because of this, the guilt of their sin was accounted and their corrupt nature passed on to all their offspring who descended from them by ordinary procreation. 00:09:37.759 --> 00:09:56.120 Their descendants are now conceived in sin and are by nature children of wrath, the servants of sin and partakers of death and all other miseries, spiritual, temporal and eternal, unless the Lord Jesus sets them free. 00:09:57.500 --> 00:09:59.580 It's hard stuff, isn't it? 00:09:59.580 --> 00:10:00.939 But it's true. 00:10:01.399 --> 00:10:06.019 And they are representing what Paul is saying in Ephesians 2 as well. 00:10:06.019 --> 00:10:14.579 And Robert Striven, again in his book, just has this really helpful paragraph about guilt that we assume guilt is essentially a feeling, right? 00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:20.139 So we imagine guilt is that sort of sinking feeling that we have in our mind. 00:10:20.220 --> 00:10:24.720 I don't know whether you, you know, I sit on my bed at night thinking, oh, I can't believe I said that. 00:10:25.279 --> 00:10:25.720 Are you like that? 00:10:25.819 --> 00:10:27.879 That's what we sort of imagine guilt to be like, right? 00:10:28.379 --> 00:10:35.259 But actually, we feel that guilt is like that because of our kind of modern way of thinking about it. 00:10:35.259 --> 00:10:38.860 But he says, because of this, the answer is said to lie in therapy. 00:10:39.539 --> 00:10:45.399 We are to deal with feelings of guilt by talking through the possible underlying causes and trying to unpick them and do away with it. 00:10:46.080 --> 00:10:50.360 This is not the way in which the confession or more importantly, the Bible speaks of guilt. 00:10:51.019 --> 00:10:53.879 Guilt in the confession and in the Bible is objective. 00:10:54.740 --> 00:10:58.879 It's not a matter of feelings, but of judicial condemnation by my own sin. 00:11:35.379 --> 00:11:39.799 But why would I be guilty of Adam's sin when Adam performed it, not me? 00:11:39.879 --> 00:11:41.939 And I wasn't there in the garden. 00:11:42.899 --> 00:11:48.399 Now, I think the Bible would give you perhaps three answers to that or three suggestions of answers to that. 00:11:48.399 --> 00:11:50.600 You could maybe shout out something else if you've got something better. 00:11:51.699 --> 00:11:55.500 One that it would say is that essentially you are no better than Adam, right? 00:11:55.579 --> 00:12:02.799 So don't imagine, you know, oh, that we would have done. 00:12:07.439 --> 00:12:09.980 But really, judgment as well. 00:12:10.039 --> 00:12:13.740 The second answer is that judgment in the Bible does take into account what we do,
