the Lord Jesus to fail miserably. 00:00:43.380 --> 00:00:47.960 And that is what the Lord Jesus is trying to get across to his disciples. 00:00:49.019 --> 00:00:50.379 But it's not getting through. of Jesus' knowledge. 00:01:02.539 --> 00:01:08.379 How did Jesus know that all of them, his disciples, were going to fall away, 00:01:08.460 --> 00:01:10.519 were going to trip up on account of him? 00:01:11.239 --> 00:01:14.780 And he knew this because of scripture. 00:01:14.920 --> 00:01:16.900 Do you know what he says in verse 31? 00:01:17.319 --> 00:01:17.900 Can you see that? 00:01:17.900 --> 00:01:20.859 In verse 31, he says, 00:01:21.060 --> 00:01:26.520 You will all fall away because of me this night, for it is written. 00:01:27.460 --> 00:01:31.380 I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered. 00:01:31.379 --> 00:01:38.420 And Jesus is quoting from the Old Testament, from the book of Zechariah, and from chapter 13 in verse 7. 00:01:39.319 --> 00:01:44.439 And in that passage, it has to do with the one that the Lord calls his shepherd. 00:01:45.239 --> 00:01:45.840 He says, 00:01:45.840 --> 00:01:59.300 So whoever this shepherd is, he is one who, as it were, is equal with God himself. 00:02:00.579 --> 00:02:03.020 It's a man who stands next to me, says the Lord. 00:02:03.019 --> 00:02:06.219 So this shepherd has a special dignity. 00:02:38.060 And so that is something that is going to happen in some way under God's will. 00:02:39.120 --> 00:02:43.640 And it is going to put God's true people to a refining test. 00:02:44.700 --> 00:02:47.620 And you see that in Zechariah 13, verses 8 and 9. 00:02:47.620 --> 00:02:53.240 So Jesus has the source of this knowledge, that his disciples are going to fall away. 00:02:53.740 --> never fall away. 00:04:32.399 --> 00:04:38.679 So here you have Jesus who has this certain view of the certainty of scripture. 00:04:39.699 --> 00:04:44.399 And then you have Peter with his feelings of his own about this. 00:04:46.060 --> 00:04:50.299 And I think that's important for us to realize that that's a choice, isn't it? 00:04:51.519 --> 00:04:57.779 Whether we go by what God's word says or we go by the basis of our feelings. 00:04:57.779 --> 00:05:03.439 Peter had very warm, devout feelings towards Jesus. 00:05:03.699 --> 00:05:05.159 And he expresses those. 00:05:06.139 --> 00:05:07.659 And I am certain that Peter was sincere. 00:05:08.559 --> 00:05:13.359 But in doing that, he was contradicting, wasn't he, what the Bible said. 00:05:13.799 --> 00:05:14.599 Explicitly said. 00:05:15.819 --> 00:05:18.539 And I think that has value for how you and I live the Christian life. 00:05:19.639 --> 00:05:22.939 That we don't live the Christian life on the basis of our takes off Malchus' ear, the slave of the high priest. 00:10:15.120 --> 00:10:16.179 He cuts off his ear. 00:10:17.459 --> 00:10:19.620 And Peter probably wanted to get his head off. 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:21.059 But thankfully he missed. 00:10:21.059 --> 00:10:24.519 And so for Peter, it wasn't a failure of courage. 00:10:25.659 --> 00:10:28.099 When he says in verse 35, 00:10:29.579 -->
