Pharaoh escalating his oppression of the Israelite people. 00:05:37.379 --> 00:05:42.620 And when his wicked plan to kill off a large portion of the male babies, 00:05:42.719 --> 00:05:43.300 Hebrew babies, 00:05:43.379 --> 00:05:44.500 Using the midwives, 00:05:45.019 --> 00:05:45.500 Failed. 00:05:45.639 --> 00:05:47.860 Because the Hebrew midwives refused to obey Pharaoh 00:05:47.860 --> 00:05:49.439 And chose to obey God instead. 00:05:50.019 --> 00:05:51.699 He commanded all of the Egyptians, 00:05:52.259 --> 00:05:54.279 Every son that is born to the Hebrews, 00:05:54.500 --> 00:05:56.759 You shall cast into the Nile. 00:05:57.519 --> 00:06:00.639 So now he has mobilized all of the Egyptians 00:06:00.639 --> 00:06:05.240 To carry out this extrajudicial killing of all male Hebrew babies. 00:06:05.240 --> 00:06:08.079 And so in chapter 1, 00:06:08.180 --> 00:06:08.900 At every turn, 00:06:09.040 --> 00:06:12.620 Pharaoh's attempt to control and oppress God's people have failed. 00:06:12.920 --> 00:06:16.199 Because God's promise to Israel is continuing. 00:06:16.360 --> 00:06:18.360 The promise to protect and preserve them 00:06:18.360 --> 00:06:19.680 And to make them into a great nation. 00:06:20.560 --> 00:06:22.500 And so that raises a question now, 00:06:22.720 --> 00:06:26.319 With Pharaoh further escalating his oppression. 00:06:26.879 --> 00:06:28.000 What will happen now? 00:06:28.879 --> 00:06:30.740 Where is justice? 00:06:31.620 --> 00:06:34.560 Will God intervene to deliver his people from even this? 00:06:35.399 --> 00:06:39.420 And chapter 2 gives us the Bible's answer. 00:06:40.199 --> 00:06:43.439 And the main point of this passage is that God remembers his promises 00:06:43.439 --> 00:06:47.879 And raises up a priest to rescue his people from slavery. 00:06:48.399 --> 00:06:50.519 We're going to see Moses' identity as a priest, 00:06:50.720 --> 00:06:51.379 As a king, 00:06:51.439 --> 00:06:52.139 As a sojourner, 00:06:52.399 --> 00:06:55.300 And how that points to Christ in this chapter. 00:06:56.120 --> 00:06:59.220 And the first thing we learn about Moses is that he was a priest. 00:06:59.220 --> 00:07:00.600 Because it tells us in verse 1, 00:07:00.600 --> 00:07:05.500 Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman. 00:07:06.460 --> 00:07:10.780 The fact that Moses is born of a Levite father and mother is significant. 00:07:10.980 --> 00:07:13.960 Because later in the book of Numbers, which Moses also writes, 00:07:14.400 --> 00:07:18.680 The Levites are specially set apart for God to assist Aaron and his sons, 00:07:18.780 --> 00:07:19.200 The priests, 00:07:19.400 --> 00:07:20.900 With work around the tabernacle. 00:07:21.640 --> 00:07:24.420 There are people who God said after the Exodus 00:07:24.420 --> 00:07:27.020 That all of the firstborn males belong to him. 00:07:27.019 --> 00:07:29.379 And instead of having to, 00:07:29.719 --> 00:07:31.379 Taking the firstborn males for himself, 00:07:31.579 --> 00:07:34.099 He chooses to take the Levites in there instead. 00:07:34.159 --> 00:07:34.439 He says, 00:07:34.519 --> 00:07:37.620 The Levites belong to me as my special servants. 00:07:38.339 --> 00:07:39.879 And so Moses is one of those people, 00:07:39.959 --> 00:07:43.019 And that's significant because of the connection later to Christ. 00:07:43.859 --> 00:07:45.000 So far so good. 00:07:45.459 --> 00:07:47.279 But verse 2 introduces the problem. 00:07:48.159 --> 00:07:51.899 The woman conceived and bore a son. 00:07:51.899 --> 00:07:58.759 We find out in verse 4 that the baby boy, Moses, 00:07:58.919 --> 00:08:01.259 Already has an older sister named Miriam, 00:08:01.379 --> 00:08:03.179 And an older brother named Aaron. 00:08:03.879 --> 00:08:05.679 So this is not the woman's first baby, 00:08:06.099 --> 00:08:08.919 But these are the times in the past. 00:08:09.199 --> 00:08:10.739 In the past it was fine to have babies. 00:08:11.560 --> 00:08:17.120 But right now is dangerous time for a Hebrew woman to have a male baby. 00:08:17.120 --> 00:08:22.920 In these times, I mean, you can imagine the sinking feeling, 00:08:23.240 --> 00:08:25.660 You know, when after the painful labor, 00:08:26.560 --> 00:08:28.660 They hold the baby in their arms, 00:08:28.800 --> 00:08:30.500 And they see that it's a boy, 00:08:30.879 --> 00:08:36.799 And then the joyful celebration gives way quickly to grief and panic. 00:08:38.080 --> 00:08:38.940 It's a boy! 00:08:39.519 --> 00:08:40.379 It's a boy! 00:08:40.519 --> course, from the perspective of a loving parent, 00:09:09.780 --> 00:09:11.700 Every baby is a fine child. 00:09:11.700 --> 00:09:14.480 But here the word fine conveys, you know, 00:09:14.540 --> 00:09:18.379 Health, beauty, and general desirability. 00:09:19.620 --> 00:09:22.420 I mean, when babies are born nowadays at hospitals, 00:09:22.560 --> 00:09:24.379 They run APGAR tests. 00:09:24.600 --> 00:09:25.620 You guys have heard of this? 00:09:25.700 --> 00:09:27.540 I think you guys have all had APGAR tests. 00:09:28.120 --> 00:09:29.360 They poke the baby. 00:09:30.420 --> 00:09:33.980 Their reflexes see how active they are with arms and legs. 00:09:34.080 --> 00:09:35.300 They observe their breathing. 00:09:35.920 --> 00:09:37.720 Whether or not they have a vigorous cry. 00:09:38.080 --> 00:09:39.540 You know, they check their pulse. 00:09:39.539 --> 00:09:42.259 If it's over 100 beats per minute, then it's good. 00:09:42.379 --> 00:09:44.139 If it's less than that, it's not as good. 00:09:44.639 --> 00:09:45.659 And they score them. 00:09:45.799 --> 00:09:47.459 You know, how does their skin look? 00:09:47.539 --> 00:09:49.379 Is it, you know, reddish and ruddy? 00:09:49.459 --> 00:09:51.039 Or is it bluish and pale? 00:09:51.559 --> 00:09:52.980 And so they score them out of 10. 00:09:53.679 --> 00:09:57.139 It's an APGAR score to see how viable, how strong the baby is. 00:09:57.480 --> 00:10:00.399 So if you were to give Moses an APGAR test, 00:10:00.459 --> 00:10:01.459 He scored really high. 00:10:02.099 --> 00:10:03.039 That's what it means here. 00:10:03.099 --> 00:10:04.759 He was a fine child. 00:10:04.759 --> 00:10:07.319 The mother looked at this baby boy and thought, 00:10:07.580 --> 00:10:10.659 Okay, this boy will grow up and be a healthy man. 00:10:10.860 --> 00:10:11.919 He's strong. 00:10:12.360 --> 00:10:13.240 He is ruddy. 00:10:14.259 --> 00:10:17.360 So she hides the boy for three months 00:10:17.360 --> 00:10:20.379 so that her Egyptian neighbors would not find out 00:10:20.379 --> 00:10:21.939 that she gave birth to a boy. 00:10:22.580 --> 00:10:23.939 And these three months, can you imagine, 00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:25.019 would have been very stressful 00:10:25.019 --> 00:10:27.240 because it's very hard to hide a baby 00:10:27.240 --> 00:10:29.460 because you can't control a baby. 00:10:29.659 --> 00:10:31.000 And a baby cries. 00:10:31.279 --> 00:10:32.639 And they cry very loudly. 00:10:32.639 --> 00:10:36.740 But somehow she manages to hide them for three months. 00:10:36.939 --> Nile, 00:11:20.379 --> 00:11:22.219 but in a boat, right? 00:11:23.179 --> 00:11:25.399 And it's an ingenious solution. 00:11:25.399 --> 00:11:28.000 And the Hebrew word for basket 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:31.240 is used to refer to only two items 00:11:31.240 --> 00:11:32.360 in the entire Old Testament. 00:11:33.299 --> 00:11:37.740 It's Moses' basket and Noah's ark. 00:11:38.139 --> 00:11:39.419 It's the same word for ark. 00:11:40.559 --> 00:11:42.899 So Noah's ark became the vehicle 00:11:42.899 --> 00:11:44.399 by which Noah and his family 00:11:44.399 --> 00:11:46.179 and through them the entire humanity 00:11:46.179 --> 00:11:48.500 was saved from the deadly flood waters. 00:11:49.039 --> 00:11:51.860 And now here, Moses' ark becomes the vehicle 00:11:51.860 --> 00:11:55.200 by which Moses is saved from the deadly waters of the Nile. 00:11:55.539 --> 00:11:57.659 And through Moses, God's chosen people too 00:11:57.659 --> 00:11:59.279 will be delivered from Egypt. 00:12:00.300 --> 00:12:01.500 And then it says in verse four 00:12:01.500 --> 00:12:03.320 that Moses' sister stood at a distance 00:12:03.320 --> 00:12:05.680 to know what would be done to him. 00:12:05.800 --> 00:12:06.960 So they're watching, 00:12:07.200 --> 00:12:08.919 hoping that the exposed baby 00:12:08.919 --> 00:12:11.539 will be picked up by a compassionate Egyptian family 00:12:11.539 --> 00:12:13.899 who will bring him up as their own. 00:12:14.659 --> 00:12:16.060 It says in verses five to six, 00:12:16.059 --> 00:12:19.539 Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to incredible turn of events. 00:12:50.580 --> 00:12:52.919 I mean, this sister is quite the go-getter. 00:12:53.500 --> 00:12:55.259 She goes, she watches and goes, 00:12:55.340 --> 00:12:58.340 and then she says, hey, I happen to know a woman 00:12:58.340 --> 00:13:00.360 that can be a wet nurse for you. 00:13:00.580 --> 00:13:01.600 Can I go get her for you? 00:13:01.659 --> 00:13:03.899 And then she goes and gets Moses' mother. 00:13:04.799 --> 00:13:08.279 And so this is a great example of God's providence. 00:13:09.500 --> 00:13:11.720 Providence refers to how God governs 00:13:11.720 --> 00:13:14.700 and guides all of creation and all of history. 00:13:15.800 --> 00:13:17.920 You know, ironically, in God's providence, 00:13:18.060 --> 00:13:22.560 it's Pharaoh's own daughter that defies his father's command 00:13:22.560 --> 00:13:24.220 to cast these Hebrew boys into the Nile 00:13:24.220 --> 00:13:26.360 and then draws the boy out of the Nile. 00:13:26.940 --> 00:13:28.920 And ironically, it's Moses' own mother 00:13:28.920 --> 00:13:30.460 that gets to take care of Moses. 00:13:30.800 --> 00:13:32.960 And now she gets to get paid for it. 00:13:33.120 --> 00:13:33.680 It's amazing. 00:13:33.679 --> 00:13:38.059 Only God could orchestrate something like that. 00:13:38.579 --> 00:13:41.339 God is still governing and guiding all creation, 00:13:41.459 --> 00:13:42.739 all of history today. 00:13:43.759 --> 00:13:45.519 Even through the ups and downs, 00:13:45.799 --> 00:13:47.500 twists and turns of our own lives, 00:13:47.979 --> 00:13:50.699 God is sovereignly working out his plan for us. 00:13:51.979 --> 00:13:54.539 And notice also how in both chapters one and two, 00:13:54.899 --> 00:13:58.659 highlights how God used the woman in particular 00:13:58.659 --> 00:14:00.799 to thwart Pharaoh's wicked plan 00:14:00.799 --> 00:14:02.559 to kill the Jewish male babies. 00:14:02.559 --> 00:14:06.259 In chapter one, it was the Hebrew midwives, 00:14:06.479 --> 00:14:07.319 Shiphrah and Puah, 00:14:07.439 --> 00:14:08.919 who defied the Pharaoh's command 00:14:08.919 --> 00:14:10.339 to kill the male Hebrew babies. 00:14:11.019 --> 00:14:12.019 Now in chapter two, 00:14:12.179 --> 00:14:14.679 it's Moses' mother and sister 00:14:14.679 --> 00:14:16.679 and Pharaoh's own daughter 00:14:16.679 --> 00:14:18.319 who defy Pharaoh's command. 00:14:19.759 --> 00:14:22.639 Pharaoh thinks he can't control the Jewish population 00:14:22.639 --> 00:14:24.699 simply by limiting the number of their men. 00:14:26.039 --> 00:14:28.419 But that turns out to be a miscalculation 00:14:28.419 --> 00:14:31.519 because the woman won't allow him 00:14:31.519 --> 00:14:32.779 to carry out his evil plan. 00:14:34.779 --> 00:14:36.459 And they subvert Pharaoh's rule 00:14:36.459 --> 00:14:38.399 and defy the most powerful man 00:14:38.399 --> 00:14:39.699 in this part of the ancient world 00:14:39.699 --> 00:14:41.779 simply, and this is the amazing part, 00:14:42.120 --> 00:14:45.740 simply in their roles as midwives and mothers. 00:14:45.740 --> 00:14:49.960 Later, God will use a man, 00:14:50.200 --> 00:14:51.620 Moses, to confront Pharaoh
