conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, 00:05:59.699 --> 00:06:09.300 escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of men who are listed in the first few verses are judges. 00:07:53.720 --> 00:07:58.800 Apart from David, who is the only king, and the prophets. 00:07:58.800 --> 00:08:07.139 So, as we walk through this, it says, I think that this is significant that he focuses on the time of the judges. 00:08:07.579 --> 00:08:15.019 And any of you who know your Bible know that the theme of that whole dark time in the nation of Israel's history 00:08:15.019 --> 00:08:19.740 was in those days, everyone did what was right in his own eyes. 00:08:20.259 --> 00:08:23.120 That was the theme of that whole time period. 00:08:23.199 --> 00:08:25.800 A very terrible, terrible period. 00:08:25.800 --> 00:08:33.100 And God, the cycle began of God's people rebelling against him, looking to idols and sin. 00:08:33.680 --> 00:08:38.799 God sending in a foreign pagan nation to judge them, to rule over them. 00:08:39.659 --> 00:08:43.259 The people would repent and weep over their sin and turn back to God. 00:08:44.120 --> 00:08:45.919 God would send a judge to deliver them. 00:08:46.980 --> 00:08:48.299 And they would be delivered. 00:08:49.039 --> 00:08:51.220 That was just the cycle that just you see in our text, he mentions Gideon. 00:09:10.080 --> 00:09:18.020 Gideon, who trusted God, if you remember, against the Midianites, 00:09:18.740 --> 00:09:21.560 he had an army originally of about 32,000. 00:09:21.800 --> 00:09:29.320 And God reduced it twice until it was 300 men to face this massive, massive army. 00:09:30.440 --> 00:09:32.160 And why did God do that? 00:09:32.280 --> 00:09:36.000 That's kind of a crazy military tactic. 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:39.600 But in Judges 7, verse 2, this is why. 00:09:41.259 --> 00:09:42.320 God said to Gideon, 00:09:42.440 --> 00:09:48.700 The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into your hand, 00:09:49.659 --> 00:09:54.179 lest Israel boast over me, saying, 00:09:54.360 --> 00:09:56.500 My own hand has saved me. 00:09:57.120 --> 00:10:00.620 So God wanted to set the stage that it would be 100% clear 00:10:00.620 --> 00:10:02.779 that if they won this battle, it was because of God, 00:10:02.840 --> 00:10:04.980 not because of anything they had. 00:10:04.980 --> 00:10:08.820 And so, have you lived a life like that? 00:10:08.879 --> 00:10:12.240 That is a prayer that I pray with my wife a few times. 00:10:12.440 --> 00:10:17.720 Like, God set this up in such a way that there's no other explanation 00:10:17.720 --> 00:10:19.960 for what happened apart from you. 00:10:20.779 --> 00:10:21.560 00:10:49.399 --> 00:10:51.180 It was so that God would be glorified. 00:10:51.179 --> 00:10:55.959 Barak, or Barak, is the next one mentioned. 00:10:56.839 --> 00:10:59.759 He obeyed God's word through the judge Deborah, 00:11:00.819 --> 00:11:04.959 and likewise defeated another pagan army that was really mighty, 00:11:05.120 --> 00:11:09.039 900 chariots of iron, which would have been a big deal back then. 00:11:09.099 --> 00:11:12.519 That would be like saying 900 Abrams tanks coming at you. 00:11:12.519 --> 00:11:21.360 And so, he chose to trust the Lord, and God gave him victory during the time of the judge Deborah. 00:11:22.039 --> 00:11:24.100 He was faithful to God's command. 00:11:25.259 --> 00:11:26.679 That's Judges 4, verse 6. 00:11:26.740 --> 00:11:33.860 And then we see Samson mentioned, which most of us don't normally think of Samson as a good example of someone to maybe imitate, 00:11:33.860 --> 00:11:37.879 because he was empowered by God, but he frittered away that power. 00:11:37.980 --> 00:11:45.740 He used it very, at his own leisure, and indulged in some very sinful things that God had forbidden. 00:11:46.659 --> 00:11:50.120 And his assumption was, God is with me, so it's going to be okay. 00:11:52.240 --> 00:11:57.100 Until God judged him by pulling that strength from him, right? 00:11:57.800 --> 00:11:59.659 And humbled him, broke him. 00:11:59.659 --> 00:12:10.899 And God had promised originally that he was going to give Samson power to defeat the enemies of Israel and the Philistines. 00:12:11.259 --> 00:12:12.759 And he did for a long time. 00:12:13.679 --> 00:12:18.699 Until God, again, in judgment, sort of removed that power, Samson is humbled. 00:12:19.419 --> 00:12:24.179 As one writer said, there's a subterranean substance to Samson's faith. 00:12:24.939 --> 00:12:25.679 I like that. 00:12:25.779 --> 00:12:27.299 It's kind of undergirding. 00:12:27.299 --> 00:12:30.699 So we just see his mistakes more than mentioned, right? 00:13:08.899 --> 00:13:15.899 He's sort of the Hebrew Robin Hood, if you would, who was called back, again, to defend the nation. 00:13:15.899 --> 00:13:17.919 And by faith, he did man after his own heart. 00:14:16.740 --> 00:14:28.139 And David's faith screamed at Goliath, so that all people would know that the Lord saves, not with the sword or spear. 00:14:28.500 -->
