00:04:36.920 --> 00:04:48.180 It was a year that some of you who like music would know that the Beatles released their Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album. 00:04:48.180 --> 00:04:52.699 So some of you don't know who they are or what that was. 00:04:52.860 --> 00:04:56.019 But nonetheless, that happened in this year. 00:04:56.220 --> 00:05:02.400 It was the year that Thurgood Marshall became the first African-American ever appointed to the United States Supreme Court. 00:05:02.400 --> 00:05:08.699 It was the year when the United States population still was under 200 million. 00:05:08.699 --> 00:05:13.539 And it was the year, this will probably give it away to those of you who are history buffs anyway. 00:05:13.839 --> 00:05:17.800 It was the year of the Six-Day War. 00:05:20.620 --> 00:05:21.259 1967. 00:05:23.120 --> 00:05:26.879 That's when Texans on Missions started. 00:05:26.879 --> 00:05:38.300 Back in 1967, the summer of, there was a hurricane that hit the Texas Gulf Coast, particularly the Rio Grande Valley. 00:05:38.659 --> 00:05:42.040 And there was one man in Dallas, his name was Bob Dixon. 00:05:42.740 --> 00:05:52.860 And he seen, like many others, the devastation that the hurricane had caused to the Texas Gulf Coast, particularly the Rio Grande Valley. 00:05:52.860 --> 00:06:01.900 And so in his pickup truck, with one cooking pot and one little Bunsen burner, he drove down to Harlingen, Texas. 00:06:02.280 --> 00:06:10.379 And out of the back of his pickup truck began to serve stew to the people who were trying to help in the recovery process. 00:06:10.840 --> 00:06:14.879 He came back and four other guys got together with him over in Fort Worth. 00:06:14.879 --> 00:06:22.560 And they said, you know, this maybe ought to be a ministry that God's people do in times of disaster. 00:06:22.860 --> 00:06:35.280 And for the past 57 years, Texans on Missions, Texas Baptist Men is how many of you would know it, TBM, now TXM, Texans on Missions. 00:06:35.560 --> 00:06:38.660 That's how they started, and that's what they've been doing for 57 years. 00:06:39.220 --> 00:06:45.620 They have responded to every single disaster that has hit the state of Texas since 1967. 00:06:45.620 --> 00:06:56.879 They've grown from five people to a volunteer army of almost 5,000 scattered all over the state of Texas. 00:06:58.780 --> 00:07:03.560 And they do all of that based upon some simple biblical principles. 00:07:04.060 --> 00:07:13.500 I'm going to share those with you first, and then I'm going to ask you to remain seated because I've got some information to share. 00:07:13.500 --> 00:07:15.060 I'll explain. 00:07:16.019 --> 00:07:19.180 What's the biblical principle for this kind of work? 00:07:19.959 --> 00:07:26.540 Would it not be what Jesus said in the Gospel of Matthew chapter 7 verse 12 when he said, 00:07:27.819 --> 00:07:30.639 Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. 00:07:30.939 --> 00:07:32.079 Now that's the golden rule. 00:07:32.399 --> 00:07:36.500 Many of us grew up knowing that and learning that, memorizing it just like that. 00:07:36.500 --> 00:07:47.040 But have you ever noticed the difference between what Jesus said and what other religions have to say along those same principles? 00:07:47.600 --> 00:07:53.879 Every other religion will take that same idea but approach it from a negative standpoint. 00:07:54.120 --> 00:07:59.420 Meaning, for example, the Chinese philosopher Confucius. 00:07:59.420 --> 00:08:03.460 He had the same kind of a principle, but it was from a negative perspective. 00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:07.160 Meaning, do not do to other people what you do not want done to you. 00:08:07.240 --> 00:08:09.319 But Jesus turned it all the way around. 00:08:10.199 --> 00:08:14.360 Completely different than anything anyone else had ever said or has ever said since. 00:08:15.060 --> 00:08:17.400 He took a positive and active approach. 00:08:17.860 --> 00:08:23.700 Actively go and do for other people what you would want done for you if you were in their position in that situation. 00:08:23.699 --> 00:08:31.019 So that is kind of a biblical principle for what TBM does, TXM does when it comes to disaster relief. 00:08:31.139 --> 00:08:37.439 If you were in their position, if a tornado hit your house, what would you want done for you? 00:08:37.639 --> 00:08:41.019 You would want somebody to show up and help you work through that. 00:08:41.399 --> 00:08:42.240 That's what they do. 00:08:45.259 --> 00:08:47.200 Jesus set the example for it. 00:08:48.379 --> 00:08:50.059 Matthew chapter 20. 00:08:50.059 --> 00:08:56.859 Remember when Jesus said, the Son of Man has come not to be served but to serve? 00:08:57.079 --> 00:09:07.219 So it's a service principle based upon an active positive approach that lays the biblical foundation for everything that Texans on Missions does. 00:09:08.339 --> 00:09:11.459 So, with that in mind, stay seated. 00:09:11.939 --> 00:09:16.339 I don't know today if I have two points or seven points. 00:09:16.340 --> 00:09:20.620 All I really know is, you hope I have two points. 00:09:22.720 --> 00:09:29.759 So, with that in mind, I want to talk about what they do and what they need. 00:09:31.399 --> 00:09:38.120 So, before I talk about what they do, let me explain why their name has changed some over the years. 00:09:38.639 --> 00:09:42.000 They started back in 1967 with five men. 00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:47.860 Well, today, 43% of their volunteers are women. 00:09:49.179 --> 00:09:54.759 So, I have been at a number of churches where ladies in the church have come up to me and have said, 00:09:54.860 --> 00:09:58.940 Well, I sure wish I could help, but you know it's Texas Baptist men. 00:10:00.139 --> 00:10:02.820 Ladies, that's not an excuse. 00:10:04.480 --> 00:10:06.360 You can be very much involved. 00:10:06.519 --> 00:10:09.519 And now, so many churches don't have Baptist in their name. 00:10:09.580 --> 00:10:10.879 Now, I am Baptist to the core. 00:10:10.879 --> 00:10:12.580 I will be Baptist. 00:10:12.740 --> 00:10:14.120 There's never a Baptist to be. 00:10:15.539 --> 00:10:19.519 But Texans on Missions kind of represents who we are. 00:10:20.220 --> 00:10:26.679 Men and women of the theological, doctrinal, sound basis on God's Word, 00:10:27.220 --> 00:10:30.860 out there serving others for the purpose of sharing the gospel. 00:10:31.600 --> 00:10:34.220 So, it kind of comes down to we serve so we can share. 00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:37.960 We serve others so we can share the name of Jesus with them. 00:10:38.460 --> 00:10:40.460 All that being said, what do they do? 00:10:40.879 --> 00:10:41.899 Four things. 00:10:43.399 --> 00:10:45.019 All under one point. 00:10:45.860 --> 00:10:46.740 You see what I did there? 00:10:48.240 --> 00:10:49.320 So, here we go. 00:10:49.559 --> 00:10:52.340 They do disaster relief. 00:10:52.919 --> 00:10:56.279 Now, in disaster relief, a number of things. 00:10:56.740 --> 00:10:59.580 I'm going to start with probably what they're most known for. 00:10:59.779 --> 00:11:02.820 That would be the feeding of people who are hungry. 00:11:02.820 --> 00:11:12.000 So, when a disaster hits an area, lots of times people cannot provide meals for themselves. 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:19.160 TBM shows up within hours cooking food for those who can't provide food for themselves. 00:11:19.159 --> 00:11:24.899 Now, on any given day, they can provide food for 100 people. 00:11:24.899 --> 00:11:31.019 And if they put every bit of their equipment together that they have scattered all over the state, 00:11:31.259 --> 00:11:34.220 they can provide 100,000 meals a day. 00:11:34.220 --> 00:11:42.460 Now, if that's you and you're in that situation, you're going to be grateful for someone showing up with a hot meal. 00:11:42.720 --> 00:11:43.460 That's what they do. 00:11:43.779 --> 00:11:44.519 That's what they do. 00:11:44.519 --> 00:11:51.439 And they serve all of those meals so that, in the process, they'll have opportunities to share the gospel. 00:11:51.720 --> 00:11:55.559 If you ever want to get involved with a cooking team, you can do so. 00:11:56.019 --> 00:11:59.399 Right here, First Baptist Henrietta, you could form your own cooking team. 00:11:59.679 --> 00:12:01.779 But it's not just the cooking of meals that they do. 00:12:02.220 --> 00:12:03.759 They do chainsaw relief. 00:12:03.759 --> 00:12:09.980 Right now, they have teams in Oklahoma, Sulphur, Oklahoma, Holdenville, Oklahoma, and Mariette, Oklahoma, 00:12:10.200 --> 00:12:18.299 doing chainsaw relief for people who had their homes damaged because of the storms of last weekend. 00:12:19.519 --> 00:12:22.659 Last Sunday afternoon, I was driving back from Norman, Oklahoma. 00:12:23.059 --> 00:12:28.379 My parents live in Norman, Oklahoma, and my dad turns 91, so I went up to, you know, tell him happy birthday. 00:12:28.759 --> 00:12:32.559 All that to say, driving back and came through Mariette, Oklahoma. 00:12:32.559 --> 00:12:36.659 You know, just up on I-35, you're not far from really where we are. 00:12:37.439 --> 00:12:40.039 The damage was enormous in Marietta, Oklahoma. 00:12:40.519 --> 00:12:43.539 Trees everywhere, limbs down, power lines down. 00:12:44.239 --> 00:12:51.299 You'd just be happy to know that you, First Baptist Henrietta, you're in Marietta, Oklahoma today through TBM, 00:12:51.599 --> 00:12:54.539 right there, helping those people in a time of need. 00:12:55.359 --> 00:13:02.199 Every one of our volunteers is on standby today because of the flooding that's happening in southeast Texas right now. 00:13:02.200 --> 00:13:09.860 When all of that begins to reside, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of volunteers will descend to southeast Texas to help those people begin to recover. 00:13:10.120 --> 00:13:13.180 It's all a part of disaster relief, chainsaw, flood relief. 00:13:13.440 --> 00:13:15.200 Do you remember the fires in the panhandle? 00:14:09.740 --> 00:14:10.500 Y'all remember that? 00:14:10.919 --> 00:14:17.159 The pastor, First Baptist West, and some people from his church came up to visit me last weekend just to look around the TBM facilities. 00:14:17.159 --> 00:14:19.399 This is exactly what the pastor told me. 00:14:19.639 --> 00:14:26.699 He said, for 10 days, our entire community depended on TBM for showers and laundry. 00:14:28.000 --> 00:14:29.620 10 days after that explosion. 00:14:30.399 --> 00:14:31.740 You were doing that kind of work. 00:14:32.039 --> 00:14:33.399 But let me tell you one other thing they do. 00:14:33.480 --> 00:14:35.360 I didn't know they even did this kind of ministry. 00:14:35.620 --> 00:14:38.860 And by the way, your pastor came up a while back and took a tour of the whole thing. 00:14:38.959 --> 00:14:43.600 So I think that's why I'm here because he came away going, our people need to know about this work. 00:14:43.600 --> 00:14:46.000 So have you ever heard of the box ministry?
