Labor Day, 1894. It was declared a national holiday, 00:00:59.179 --> 00:01:04.900 and so it's a national holiday to honor American workers, and so on Labor Day, 00:01:05.079 --> 00:01:08.759 we take a break from our labors. Woo-hoo! 00:01:08.760 --> 00:01:15.320 Woo-hoo! But when it comes to the Christian labor of sanctification, 00:01:16.680 --> 00:01:27.920 we never take a day off. The work of denying your sin every day and the work of living for Christ 00:01:27.920 --> 00:01:33.360 every day is a work that we don't take vacations from this side of seeing Jesus. 00:01:33.359 --> 00:01:41.980 I've defined the sanctification as the cooperative process between God and a Christian by which a 00:01:41.980 --> 00:01:48.840 Christian becomes less and less ruled by sin and becomes more and more like Christ in holiness, 00:01:49.099 --> 00:01:54.900 and there is hard work to this sanctification because we've all got a problem. 00:01:54.900 --> 00:02:05.280 All of us. It's called indwelling sin. It's that part of you from which your sexual lust springs. 00:02:06.300 --> 00:02:13.379 It's that part of you from which your material greed kind of growls. It's that part of you from 00:02:13.379 --> 00:02:19.460 which you gossip, from which you fear what people think about you more than what God thinks about you. 00:02:19.460 --> 00:02:25.920 That's your indwelling sin. And even though you've been justified, you still have this indwelling sin 00:02:25.920 --> 00:02:34.960 exerting influence, and that's why our Bibles tell us to be killing that sin, bringing to life godliness in its place. 00:02:35.719 --> 00:02:42.879 So the thing is, tomorrow, many of us are not working. Indwelling sin isn't taking Labor Day off. 00:02:42.879 --> 00:02:50.319 Indwelling sin is not going to take any day off between here and the day you breathe your last. 00:02:50.500 --> 00:02:55.500 And that's why we've got to be vigilant. That's why we've got to remain on the clock when it comes to 00:02:55.500 --> 00:03:01.019 putting to death our sin and bringing to life godliness. And I'm going to be using language of 00:03:01.019 --> 00:03:09.539 denying our sin and living for Christ. So let me just ask a couple questions to make sure we're all on the 00:03:09.539 --> 00:03:16.319 same page. Has anybody been tempted to sexual lust recently? You can just nod, maybe say yes. Yes. 00:03:17.639 --> 00:03:24.579 And if we're to say, well, how often? That'd be interesting. Have you been tempted to fear what 00:03:24.579 --> 00:03:31.959 other people think about you more than what God thinks about you? Yes. And if we're to ask how often? 00:03:31.960 --> 00:03:41.100 Well, that would be interesting. Are you tempted towards greed, to amass money or possessions on a 00:03:41.100 --> 00:03:48.280 regular basis? If you're tempted to that, I'm guessing you are. So am I. How often? These are 00:03:48.280 --> 00:03:55.260 temptations common to man. Are you tempted to gossip, to speak about someone behind their back, 00:03:55.420 --> 00:04:00.379 something you wouldn't say to them because you're looking to injure them somehow, or have this choice 00:04:00.379 --> 00:04:07.060 morsel that goes down into your inner barks? All of us are tempted to these things. These are temptations 00:04:07.060 --> 00:04:15.579 common to man. Our sinful desires are seeking to continually exert itself on us, but we need to say 00:04:15.579 --> 00:04:26.019 no to these things. We need to deny these sinful desires and live for God. So there's no taking a day off 00:04:26.019 --> 00:04:33.819 from your sanctification. And God be praised. He's got daily grace for us to fight our sin and to live 00:04:33.819 --> 00:04:39.359 for Christ. So we're just going to do what we've been doing over the last few Sundays. I'm going to 00:04:39.359 --> 00:04:44.319 kind of like doctrine defined, and then we're going to move to doctrine supported. We're going to be in 00:04:44.319 --> 00:04:51.319 Titus 2, and then doctrine applied. And in that doctrine applied section, I'm going to take some time to 00:04:51.319 --> 00:05:02.240 apply this idea of sanctification to two specific areas, two temptations common to us all. Okay. Now, 00:05:02.420 --> 00:05:08.319 I've been debating whether or not I should pull out the whiteboard. I chose to do it again. So this is 00:05:08.319 --> 00:05:16.539 the last Sunday you will see this whiteboard for a while. I know. You're so sad. Now here's the moment of 00:05:16.540 --> 00:05:25.120 truth. Do you remember what I did last week? Not this week, baby. Oh, I planned ahead. Dun, dun, dun. 00:05:26.439 --> 00:05:36.300 All right. So let's do a doctrinal review. All right. So justification. Justification defined is this. 00:05:36.740 --> 00:05:45.400 It is the one-time legal act in which God declares an unrighteous sinner righteous in his sight based upon 00:05:45.399 --> 00:05:50.179 their faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. And you might be asking, well, how does that happen? 00:05:50.779 --> 00:05:58.199 And that's where 2 Corinthians 5, 21 comes in. It tells workings of that. For our sake, God made 00:05:58.199 --> 00:06:04.179 Jesus, who knew no sin, to become sin on our behalf that we might become the righteousness of God. So the 00:06:04.179 --> 00:06:11.339 moment a sinner like you and I believes in the finished work of Jesus, what God does is he considers 00:06:11.339 --> 00:06:20.659 your unrighteousness as being placed on Jesus Christ and all of God's wrath is poured out on Christ 00:06:20.659 --> 00:06:27.979 back on that first, that good Friday. And then he considers Christ's righteousness as being imputed to 00:06:27.979 --> 00:06:34.000 you. And so nothing but his favor resides on you now. So in that one act of your faith in the finished 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:47.980 work of Jesus, God thinks of you now as justified, a legal righteousness. So you are in right legal 00:06:47.980 --> 00:06:57.839 standing with God and you can put a big old period on that. You are justified, period. Now, 00:06:57.839 --> 00:07:03.539 sanctification is what we call experiential, you got to bear with the handwriting. 00:07:06.179 --> 00:07:14.599 Experiential righteousness. And it springs forth from God's work of justification into us. We're not 00:07:14.599 --> 00:07:21.120 seeking to be sanctified in order to be justified. That's a works salvation. No, because we've been 00:07:21.120 --> 00:07:27.819 justified, we are now working out our salvation through our sanctification. So our sanctification 00:07:27.819 --> 00:07:36.459 is an outworking of God's initial work of grace in us is justification. And this process is like 00:07:36.459 --> 00:07:44.079 this. This is, you are becoming righteous, kind of like dot, dot, dot. It's the Dow Jones Industrial 00:07:44.079 --> 00:07:50.000 Average. You're making progress, but it can be slow, right? And thanks be to God, we've been justified. 00:07:50.000 --> 00:08:00.060 So you've been justified by God's grace. You are being sanctified by God's grace. And now I'm going to 00:08:00.060 --> 00:08:14.060 introduce a third-fication. Any guesses? Glorification, right. Glorification. And what this is, 00:08:14.060 --> 00:08:20.399 I'm using the phrase, I'm using the phrase, resurrection righteousness. 00:08:23.699 --> 00:08:34.860 In 1 Corinthians 15, 50 through 58, Paul shares a mystery with us. He talks about what will happen 00:08:34.860 --> 00:08:40.320 the moment that Jesus returns. The moment that Jesus returns, all of the dead in Christ are going to be 00:08:40.320 --> 00:08:47.180 raised, and all of God's people are going to be given new resurrected bodies. And what that means is 00:08:47.180 --> 00:08:54.600 this. There's no more sinful nature in that resurrection body of yours waiting for you. And so at that point, 00:08:55.000 --> 00:09:06.740 you have a full, and we can call it fully realized righteousness. This is yet to happen. This is a dot, 00:09:06.740 --> 00:09:12.980 dot, dot, dot, dot, righteousness. We're waiting for this. We're looking forward to this. And so with 00:09:12.980 --> 00:09:21.360 justification, you can say, you have been saved, period. what I want to show you right now is that, yes, our Bibles do teach that. 00:10:41.539 --> 00:10:48.480 And so, would you open up your Bible, if you have them, to Titus, Titus 2. 00:10:48.679 --> 00:10:51.819 That's the doctrine defined, doctrine reviewed. 00:10:52.459 --> 00:10:54.860 Now, let's look at doctrine supported. 00:10:55.339 --> 00:11:02.259 Is this idea of an already grace and a future grace and now grace for sanctification, 00:11:02.860 --> 00:11:04.279 do we see that in our Bibles? 00:11:05.259 --> 00:11:07.279 And that's where I want to bring you to Titus chapter 2. 00:11:07.279 --> 00:11:10.980 Titus, just a little background. 00:11:11.879 --> 00:11:14.399 The book of Titus is called a pastoral epistle. 00:11:15.379 --> 00:11:21.120 And what it is, is the Apostle Paul wrote these letters to these apostolic delegates, 00:11:21.480 --> 00:11:26.220 these church planting pastors like Timothy and Titus. 00:11:26.379 --> 00:11:30.319 And he's instructing them of how to go about establishing churches. 00:11:30.320 --> 00:11:34.379 And so, in Titus 1.5, Paul writes to Titus and he says, 00:11:34.780 --> 00:11:39.240 Hey, the reason why I, you know, I left you in Crete was for you to put in order, 00:11:39.760 --> 00:11:40.640 you know, what remained. 00:11:40.800 --> 00:11:42.920 In other words, get this church established. 00:11:43.480 --> 00:11:44.640 Get elders in place. 00:11:44.900 --> 00:11:46.379 Start teaching sound doctrine. 00:11:47.160 --> 00:11:53.200 And so, in chapter 2, what's very interesting is that the Apostle Paul starts urging Titus 00:11:53.200 --> 00:11:58.960 to be teaching the new converts in Crete of how to walk in a manner worthy of the gospel, 00:11:59.200 --> 00:12:06.980 how to live holy lives, how to kind of live out the work of grace that God has begun in them. 00:12:07.720 --> 00:12:11.600 And so, if you look at chapter 2, in verse 10, he addresses older men. 00:12:13.000 --> 00:12:17.100 In verse 3, Paul is telling Titus how to address older women. 00:12:17.100 --> 00:12:23.000 In verse 6, it turns to, oh, excuse me, verse 4 and 5 to younger women. 00:12:23.139 --> 00:12:24.920 And then verse 6 to younger men. 00:12:25.139 --> 00:12:29.519 And then 7 and 8 to Titus himself, this apostolic delegate. 00:12:29.659 --> 00:12:35.259 And then in verses 9 and 10, to slaves who were converts to Christ in Crete. 00:12:36.659 --> 00:12:39.800 And so, he's saying all of these different people, 00:12:40.320 --> 00:12:44.440 hey, they need to walk in a manner worthy of the gospel. 00:12:44.440 --> 00:12:47.920 They need to pursue holiness. 00:12:48.300 --> 00:12:52.120 And so, the question becomes, well, for all these new converts in Crete, 00:12:52.240 --> 00:12:54.260 how do they do that? Savior. 00:14:48.419 --> 00:14:51.279 God our Savior is a reference to Jesus. 00:14:52.539 --> 00:14:54.259 He's both God and Savior. 00:14:54.259 --> 00:15:00.340 He is the grace of God that appeared in verse 11. 00:15:00.340 --> 00:15:08.620 So that grace of God that appeared in verse 11 is a reference to the first coming of Jesus Christ. 00:15:08.740 --> 00:15:14.740 His miraculous conception, his miraculous birth, his sinless life, his substitutionary death, 00:15:15.000 --> 00:15:18.800 his victorious resurrection over sin, death, and the devil. 00:15:18.799 --> 00:15:21.899 That was his
