while titled Key Election Issues, will likely disappoint you if you were hoping for specific advice for Tuesday, 00:01:16.099 --> 00:01:19.120 as I've been asked for this morning on multiple occasions. 00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:26.980 But it is true that we as God's people should care about things like politics and elections. 00:01:27.400 --> 00:01:36.300 As we just read earlier in Jeremiah, God calls us to seek the good and pray for the places we live. 00:01:36.299 --> 00:01:42.899 Our calling as followers of Jesus is to seek that His kingdom would come here on earth. 00:01:42.899 --> 00:01:46.060 This kingdom of justice and mercy and truth. 00:01:46.179 --> 00:01:48.179 That it would be more and more here on earth. 00:01:48.340 --> 00:01:53.599 And that involves laws and leaders and systems and societies. 00:01:53.780 --> 00:01:55.179 All of those things. 00:01:55.340 --> 00:01:58.140 God's Word has much to say about such matters. 00:01:58.140 --> 00:02:28.120 God's Word has much to say about such matters. 00:02:28.120 --> 00:02:58.099 God's Word cares about elections. 00:02:58.120 --> 00:03:03.780 God's Word is unspiritual or worldly, beneath us, unimportant. unhealthy way in my own heart. 00:03:16.639 --> 00:03:27.979 It's a confession really and part of that confession that I didn't plan for that I've realized this morning is I confess how much I care disappoint everybody at the same time and that's not a real great feeling. 00:03:36.879 --> 00:03:43.219 But those feelings and many others have been in my heart over the last few months. 00:03:43.340 --> 00:03:47.159 I've seen my emotions ride the waves of the news cycle. 00:03:47.159 --> 00:03:57.719 I've been discouraged, hopeful, disgusted, anxious, and many things in between. 00:03:57.879 --> 00:04:02.639 And sometimes I would say those emotions have been very appropriate emotions. 00:04:02.639 --> 00:04:12.519 But I've let my outlook on life be driven by the latest poll numbers, various conspiracy theories, 00:04:13.239 --> 00:04:17.379 even the relative hopes of third party candidates I've never heard of before. 00:04:18.379 --> 00:04:21.959 All sorts of things that have controlled me. 00:04:22.219 --> 00:04:26.519 Maybe this hasn't been the case for you with this election cycle. 00:04:26.519 --> 00:04:30.779 Maybe you have had your heart controlled by other things. 00:04:31.659 --> 00:04:34.120 Recent test results, maybe. 00:04:35.219 --> 00:04:37.240 Tumultuous relationships. 00:04:38.359 --> 00:04:39.919 The loss of a job. 00:04:41.039 --> 00:04:48.879 And you feel these circumstances in your life that they begin to control and drive your heart and your outlook on everything. 00:04:49.199 --> 00:04:54.159 They seem to be writing your story for you and telling you how you should approach life. 00:04:54.160 --> 00:04:58.900 I believe many of us have felt it acutely with the election though. 00:04:59.980 --> 00:05:05.920 And one of the things God used this year to keep me anchored in the midst of the storms in my heart 00:05:05.920 --> 00:05:09.600 was the book of Daniel as we studied it this summer. 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:12.700 You missed the lion, didn't you? 00:05:13.420 --> 00:05:14.640 It's been a little while. 00:05:14.760 --> 00:05:18.379 Yeah, one last visit from the lion on the slide. 00:05:19.280 --> 00:05:23.780 But it helped me because Daniel lived in a culture much like ours. 00:05:24.160 --> 00:05:28.100 He learned what it looked like to follow the true king there. 00:05:28.480 --> 00:05:32.960 To have a singular devotion to God in the midst of a pluralistic culture. 00:05:33.260 --> 00:05:35.380 And so that was really helpful to me. 00:05:35.980 --> 00:05:38.700 Unfortunately for us, Babylon was not a democracy. 00:05:39.240 --> 00:05:41.460 So we don't get to see Daniel vote, do we? 00:05:42.520 --> 00:05:43.460 No help there. 00:05:43.459 --> 00:05:51.799 But this morning, I think there are several lessons we can 00:07:21.680 --> 00:07:23.159 Many stories like that. 00:07:24.180 --> 00:07:25.459 And along the way. 00:07:25.459 --> 00:07:28.500 And especially in the second half of the book of Daniel. 00:07:29.219 --> 00:07:32.000 God sends visions of heaven. 00:07:32.899 --> 00:07:36.979 These eternal realities that he sometimes gives directly to Daniel. 00:07:37.219 --> 00:07:40.219 Sometimes he sends them in dreams or visions to a king. 00:07:40.339 --> 00:07:41.779 And Daniel interprets them. 00:07:42.919 --> 00:07:44.099 But what God's doing. 00:07:44.219 --> 00:07:45.439 What's happening It's like we've been talking about. 00:08:43.360 --> 00:08:44.240 Already this morning. 00:08:44.360 --> 00:08:45.660 About God reigning. 00:08:45.780 --> 00:08:47.639 If there's a refrain in the book of Daniel. 00:08:47.840 --> 00:08:48.560 It's this. 00:08:48.660 --> 00:08:49.740 It happens over and over. 00:08:49.820 --> 00:08:51.240 In different people's words. 00:08:51.740 --> 00:08:53.120 For his kingdom to advance in the world. 00:11:27.460 --> 00:11:29.840 Was he needed Christians in the White House. 00:11:30.160 --> 00:11:32.120 And Christian stars on TV. 00:11:32.460 --> 00:11:35.920 And Christian athletes who would win all the championships. 00:11:36.060 --> 00:11:38.200 So that they could get there and publicly. 00:11:38.460 --> 00:11:41.259 In a very influential and powerful way. 00:11:41.560 --> 00:11:43.200 Say all glory to God. 00:11:43.519 --> 00:11:45.080 Or this is only because of Jesus. 00:11:45.879 --> 00:11:47.920 Or whatever else they might say. 00:12:13.079 --> 00:12:14.039 Our plans. 00:12:14.199 --> 00:12:15.319 Our capabilities. 00:12:15.559 --> 00:12:16.459 Our successes. 00:12:17.039 --> 00:12:20.179 That we must be strong and impressive and influential. 00:12:20.479 --> 00:12:22.179 To advance his kingdom. 00:12:23.839 --> 00:12:27.239 The story of the book of Daniel is exactly the opposite. 00:12:27.719 --> 00:12:29.959 It's about a God who advances his kingdom. 00:12:30.219 --> 00:12:33.039 Through apparent weakness and defeat. 00:12:34.659 --> 00:12:38.159 Nebuchadnezzar is the one who appears mighty and strong. 00:12:38.179 --> 00:12:38.899 And influential. 00:12:39.219 --> 00:12:41.139 He's the king of Babylon for a while. 00:12:41.219 --> 00:12:41.419 Right? 00:12:41.819 --> 00:12:44.259 And he appears to have the world at his fingertips. 00:12:44.620 --> 00:12:45.899 He's got the upper hand. 00:12:45.979 --> 00:12:48.939 He's got greater power than Yahweh it looks like. 00:12:49.199 --> 00:12:51.739 He's exerting greater influence in the world. 00:12:52.299 --> 00:12:53.139 He's got the votes. 00:12:53.259 --> 00:12:54.379 The positions of power. 00:12:54.500 --> 00:12:55.719 The military might. 00:12:56.759 --> 00:13:00.539 And yet God is controlling the king's every move. 00:13:00.879 --> 00:13:04.879 And no one has unseated the ancient of days from his throne. 00:13:05.379 --> 00:13:06.839 God assures Daniel. 00:13:06.840 --> 00:13:11.220 He remains on the throne long after Nebuchadnezzar is gone. 00:13:11.720 --> 00:13:15.040 And king after king passes through the book of Daniel. 00:13:16.280 --> 00:13:22.200 In chapter 2 there's this great scene where Daniel and the rest of Nebuchadnezzar's wise men 00:13:22.200 --> 00:13:26.220 are sentenced to be killed because they can't interpret the king's dream. 00:13:26.220 --> 00:13:35.879 And so the powerful captain of the king's guard himself shows up at the home of this measly exile to execute him. 00:13:36.879 --> 00:13:42.899 And Daniel facing execution does not actually start a public relations strategy. 00:13:43.440 --> 00:13:45.960 He doesn't devise a plan of escape. 00:13:46.620 --> 00:13:48.080 Rather do you remember what he does? 00:13:48.080 --> 00:13:50.960 Daniel calls a prayer meeting. 00:13:51.900 --> 00:13:58.560 He invites his three friends together and four guys facing execution decide just to pray. 00:13:59.680 --> 00:14:04.240 Not maybe a power play on their part to those who were watching. 00:14:04.879 --> 00:14:13.020 He and his three friends seek mercy from the God of heaven and God answers them with the meaning of the dream and saves their life. 00:14:13.019 --> 00:14:16.000 Here's what Daniel says in chapter 2 at verse 20. 00:14:16.600 --> 00:14:21.460 Blessed be the name of God forever and ever to whom belong wisdom and might. 00:14:21.939 --> 00:14:23.779 He changes times and seasons. 00:14:24.340 --> 00:14:27.100 He removes kings and sets up kings. 00:14:27.899 --> 00:14:31.840 He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. 00:14:32.340 --> 00:14:34.699 There was no king Daniel needed to be afraid of. 00:14:34.899 --> 00:14:37.740 He prayed to the king who put that king in power. 00:14:37.740 --> 00:14:40.680 Remember that's what Daniel had to remember. 00:14:40.799 --> 00:14:42.840 That's what drove him to prayer. 00:14:43.940 --> 00:14:47.659 A pretty weak position seemingly for Daniel to be in. 00:14:47.759 --> 00:14:51.299 But he appeals to the throne of the almighty God. 00:14:52.840 --> 00:14:56.240 Listen I know you know God's in charge of everything. 00:14:57.460 --> 00:14:59.480 But do you pray like it? 00:15:00.560 --> 00:15:05.419 Is that where it drives you when you remember that God's in charge of everything? 00:15:05.419 --> 00:15:12.259 Do you have as much hope for the impact of your prayer on Wednesday morning as you do for your vote on Tuesday afternoon? 00:15:13.419 --> 00:15:15.199 And not just because you don't vote in a swing state. 00:15:16.539 --> 00:15:21.839 Because you appeal to the king of kings when you pray. 00:15:22.419 --> 00:15:24.860 Where are our hearts looking for strength? 00:15:25.240 --> 00:15:30.099 What will the progress of God's kingdom look like when we see it coming? 00:15:30.100 --> 00:15:35.779 Well often God is moving things forward through weakness and apparent defeat. 00:15:36.000 --> 00:15:39.159 Through the small and seemingly insignificant. 00:15:40.840 --> 00:15:45.139 One of my favorite images from the book of Daniel after we went through the whole thing. 00:15:45.220 --> 00:15:48.420 Is from the dream that Daniel interprets in chapter 2. 00:15:49.100 --> 00:15:55.320 You may remember it of a rock cut with no human hand. 00:15:55.320 --> 00:16:00.300 That crushes the outwardly great kingdoms of the world. 00:16:00.420 --> 00:16:03.100 God's teaching Daniel about true power. 00:16:03.100 --> 00:16:05.760 And here's what he says about this small stone. 00:16:06.320 --> 00:16:08.940 The iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, the gold. 00:16:09.060 --> 00:16:11.520 All these great kingdoms were broken in pieces. 00:16:12.080 --> 00:16:14.540 And became like the shaft of the summer threshing floors. 00:16:14.660 --> 00:16:16.020 And the wind carried them away. 00:16:16.160 --> 00:16:18.280 So not a trace of them could be found. 00:16:18.279 --> 00:16:23.279 But the stone that struck the image became a great mountain. 00:16:23.720 --> 00:16:25.679 And filled the whole earth. 00:16:25.799 --> 00:16:26.779 Verse 44. 00:16:28.100 --> 00:16:32.759 In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed. 00:16:33.059 --> 00:16:35.419 Nor shall the kingdom be left to another
