And the reason we went to the verse 17 is because this is chiastic. 00:06:32.160 --> 00:06:34.440 Because verse 1 corresponds to verse 17, 00:06:34.440 --> 00:06:36.540 you will notice the mention of Lazarus in verse 1, 00:06:36.540 --> 00:06:39.700 and then the mention down in verse 17. 00:06:39.980 --> 00:06:46.920 And it draws our attention to these words that Jesus speaks in verse 9 and verse 10. 00:06:47.700 --> 00:06:50.500 I'm not going to spend a lot of time on the literary structure this morning, 00:06:50.580 --> 00:06:55.220 but I just wanted you to understand why we stopped at 17 today. 00:06:56.280 --> 00:07:00.900 Now, most of us are very familiar with this story. 00:07:00.899 --> 00:07:06.959 And knowing how the story ends can actually keep us from feeling the weight of its beginning. 00:07:08.279 --> 00:07:13.439 Because for Mary and Martha, this is not a resurrection story. 00:07:13.819 --> 00:07:17.819 Try to plant your feet in this part of the text today. 00:07:18.159 --> 00:07:21.839 We know that Lazarus is raised. 00:07:22.459 --> 00:07:24.339 But they do not know this. 00:07:24.979 --> 00:07:29.039 At this point, it is a suffering story. 00:07:44.340 And they know someone who can do something about it. 00:07:45.340 --> 00:07:47.100 The remedies are not working. 00:07:47.280 --> 00:07:51.480 They are desperate for something to help their brother. 00:07:52.700 --> 00:07:53.780 They know Jesus. 00:07:53.779 --> 00:07:59.739 More importantly, they know that Jesus loves them. 00:08:00.839 --> 00:08:05.099 And yet, Jesus does not come. 00:08:06.359 --> 00:08:11.199 So again, we might get lost in the fact that we know he does eventually come. 00:08:11.319 --> 00:08:15.099 And he does raise Lazarus from the dead. 00:08:15.100 --> 00:08:17.020 But here is their brother. 00:08:17.200 --> 00:08:19.720 And they are desperate that their brother might be healed. 00:08:19.840 --> 00:08:25.800 And they are going to see their brother suffer to the point of death. 00:08:27.560 --> 00:08:35.240 Now then, there are few things in the Christian life more difficult to reconcile than these truths. 00:08:36.540 --> 00:08:38.740 Jesus loves me. 00:08:38.740 --> 00:08:42.700 If I am in Christ, Jesus loves me. 00:08:43.779 --> 00:08:54.919 Jesus has the power to prevent or stop my suffering, my anguish, my discomfort, my 00:09:06.379 --> 00:09:11.379 You prayed for healing, and the healing did not come. 00:09:12.379 --> 00:09:16.059 You prayed for a wayward child, and the child continued to wander. 00:09:17.139 --> 00:09:23.460 You prayed to be married, for work, for relief from some great loss. 00:09:24.539 --> 00:09:28.299 You prayed for some burden to be removed. 00:09:29.220 --> 00:09:34.120 And yet, you felt unsatisfied in your prayers. 00:09:34.120 --> 00:09:38.120 And you know that God is sovereign. 00:09:38.340 --> 00:09:39.519 He is omnipotent. 00:09:39.620 --> 00:09:43.080 He can do anything that he desires to do. 00:09:43.519 --> 00:09:46.200 You know that Christ loves his people. 00:09:47.159 --> 00:09:52.600 You know he is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond everything that we ask or think. 00:09:53.240 --> 00:09:55.120 And yet, you are still suffering. 00:09:56.580 --> 00:09:59.340 And perhaps, that leaves you confused. 00:09:59.340 --> 00:10:10.200 In this chapter, John wants us to see that the love of Jesus does not always look the way we think the love of Jesus should look. 00:10:10.940 --> 00:10:15.139 But, it is so much better. 00:10:15.139 --> 00:10:25.679 Jesus' love has a greater aim than our immediate relief. 00:10:26.740 --> 00:10:30.139 Jesus' love has a greater aim. 00:10:30.559 --> 00:10:32.659 We will see this in the first six verses. 00:10:32.659 --> 00:10:41.419 At the beginning of the chapter, John introduces us to a man named Lazarus who lives in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha. 00:10:42.339 --> 00:10:53.019 As John takes a moment to identify Mary for us, this is the Mary who will later anoint Jesus with ointment and wipe his feet with her hair. 00:10:53.980 --> 00:10:56.159 This has not happened yet. 00:10:56.159 --> 00:11:01.899 I think it is to be assumed that his original readers would have been so familiar with the story. 00:11:02.639 --> 00:11:08.500 Or perhaps, John is leaving us to wonder what is going on with this woman. 00:11:08.559 --> 00:11:12.620 And we will find out later the great intimacy of that moment. 00:11:12.759 --> 00:11:18.319 The great love that Mary had for Jesus that she would do such a thing
