and simply by faith, then what will keep us from living, like, terribly awful 00:06:50.579 --> 00:06:51.000 lives. 00:06:51.699 --> 00:06:56.319 And Paul said, you don't live a good life in order to be justified by God, but because 00:06:56.319 --> 00:07:00.859 of what Christ has done for you and in you and because of who you already are in him. 00:07:00.939 --> 00:07:06.479 If you have been united with Christ by faith, if you have been crucified with Christ, you 00:07:06.479 --> 00:07:12.319 are dead to sin, raised with Christ and slaves to righteousness, and therefore, you shall still wondering, like, well, then why do I 00:07:51.819 --> 00:07:52.900 still fight with my spouse? 00:07:53.540 --> 00:07:56.319 Why do I still carry this resentment toward so-and-so? 00:07:56.379 --> 00:07:57.579 Why did I keep blowing up at my kids? 00:07:57.620 --> 00:07:59.220 Why did I view pornography this week? 00:07:59.220 --> 00:08:02.759 Why am I still so lazy and selfish and greedy and anxious? 00:08:03.639 --> 00:08:07.560 If you're a Christian, you've probably pondered these questions, and if you're not a Christian, 00:08:07.560 --> 00:08:12.079 you've still probably pondered these questions about Christians, like if Christians are supposed 00:08:12.079 --> 00:08:17.060 to be people who are declared righteous by God, justified by faith, and if Christians 00:08:17.060 --> 00:08:21.899 are supposed to be people who are united with Jesus, dead to sin, no longer under its dominion, 00:08:22.019 --> 00:08:28.860 slaves to righteousness, why do we find ourselves still so complicit with sin and unrighteousness? 00:08:28.980 --> 00:08:29.759 What is up with that? 00:08:29.879 --> 00:08:31.319 Is it that we're all hypocrites? 00:08:31.840 --> 00:08:34.379 Is it that our faith isn't actually genuine? 00:08:34.379 --> 00:08:40.379 Or is it that the work of God in Christ is actually not sufficient to save us and to 00:08:40.379 --> 00:08:42.600 change us and to make us new? 00:08:43.360 --> 00:08:47.379 And so that's the question we'll be grappling with today as we open up Romans chapter 7. 00:08:47.539 --> 00:08:51.120 Why do Christians still continue to fall into sin? 00:08:51.159 --> 00:08:55.519 And more importantly, where can we find the power to fight sin, to stop sinning? 00:08:56.159 --> 00:08:58.600 You know, this is not just a question for the Christians in the room. 00:08:58.679 --> 00:09:00.419 This is a problem for all of us. 00:09:00.419 --> 00:09:04.059 No matter what we believe, no matter what we like to call it, whether sin or not, why 00:09:04.059 --> 00:09:07.439 do we all keep doing the things we know we ought not to do? 00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:12.699 The things that harm and dishonor ourselves and others and God? 00:09:13.659 --> 00:09:15.899 And where will we find the strength to stop? 00:09:15.959 --> 00:09:18.179 That's a question we're all trying to figure out, right? 00:09:18.860 --> 00:09:20.279 So let's look at those two questions. 00:09:20.519 --> 00:09:22.679 The first question, why do we keep sinning? 00:09:22.719 --> 00:09:24.659 Why do we keep doing things we ought not to do, right? 00:09:24.659 --> 00:09:27.919 Especially for those of us who are Christians, why does it still feel like such an affliction 00:09:27.919 --> 00:09:32.360 and a disease that we persist in our wrongdoing so much? 00:09:33.319 --> 00:09:37.799 Now, a lot of people will say, whether you're religious or irreligious, a lot of people just 00:09:37.799 --> 00:09:39.379 chalk it up to being mere humans. 00:09:39.600 --> 00:09:42.439 Like, oh, I have this bad habit that I can't kick. 00:09:42.779 --> 00:09:44.719 And someone will say, oh, it's fine. 00:09:45.120 --> 00:09:45.899 You're only human. 00:09:46.299 --> 00:09:46.879 You're only human. 00:09:47.459 --> 00:09:48.600 You know, I understand this answer. 00:09:48.659 --> 00:09:50.339 I get why people would say that. 00:09:50.379 --> 00:09:51.759 But honestly, I hate this answer. 00:09:51.759 --> 00:09:54.200 I hate this answer, and let me tell you why. 00:09:54.919 --> 00:10:00.120 It's because I think that this is way too low a view of what it means to be human. 00:10:01.039 --> 00:10:07.740 If the definition of being human is someone created by God, made in His image, right, for 00:10:07.740 --> 00:10:13.580 the purpose of ruling and reigning over His creation, for His glory, then no, to be stuck 00:10:13.580 --> 00:10:18.980 in a destructive habit isn't the essence of what it means to be human. 00:10:18.980 --> 00:10:25.360 We must never concede that an ongoing habit of wrongdoing is a natural part of God's 00:10:25.360 --> 00:10:26.700 creation order. 00:10:27.360 --> 00:10:33.200 Because see, if we think that wrongdoing and evil are natural to God's creation order, then 00:10:33.200 --> 00:10:37.860 first of all, can we even call evil evil if it's merely natural? 00:10:38.500 --> 00:10:42.000 Or should we even hope for the triumph of good over evil? 00:10:42.740 --> 00:10:45.200 Or wouldn't that just be something unnatural, right? 00:10:45.200 --> 00:10:50.400 I mean, if evil is natural, then it'd be like, you know, getting into this, you know, the 00:10:50.400 --> 00:10:51.600 Star Wars universe, right? 00:10:51.720 --> 00:10:54.240 The Star Wars universe, you have the Force, and you have the dark side, right? 00:10:54.920 --> 00:11:00.520 But in that universe, the dark side actually, by its very nature, can never actually be vanquished, 00:11:00.820 --> 00:11:01.080 right? 00:11:01.460 --> 00:11:03.400 And so Disney can make tons of money, right? 00:11:03.540 --> 00:11:05.620 Because the story goes on forever and ever. 00:11:06.160 --> 00:11:10.500 They can make tons of money off of our misery in this, like, pantheistic yin-yang universe, 00:11:10.500 --> 00:11:10.940 all right? 00:11:11.779 --> 00:11:17.399 And then secondly, if we see evil and wrongdoing as natural, then we'll also mistakenly think 00:11:17.399 --> 00:11:20.799 that we can come up with natural and creaturely solutions. 00:11:21.639 --> 00:11:23.480 Solutions to the problem of evil. 00:11:23.519 --> 00:11:29.399 So like the liberals often say that evil comes from scarcity and poorly managed systems and 00:11:29.399 --> 00:11:34.399 structures, so we just need better social programs, more education, early intervention, 00:11:34.399 --> 00:11:39.279 more access to food to help people behave better. 00:11:39.679 --> 00:11:44.860 And thus, our world can be healed from the outside in through united, globalized effort. 00:11:45.759 --> 00:11:49.399 But while rightly acknowledging the wider factors that do influence people's behavior, 00:11:49.500 --> 00:11:54.120 this perspective, it doesn't sufficiently recognize the reality of the human will and 00:11:54.120 --> 00:11:57.079 that we are moral beings with often wayward hearts. 00:11:57.240 --> 00:12:01.639 Liberals often won't admit that there's a Mr. Hyde in every Dr. Jekyll. 00:12:01.639 --> 00:12:07.480 And then the conservatives often say that the problem is due to a lack of discipline and 00:12:07.480 --> 00:12:09.559 self-mastery and willpower. 00:12:09.679 --> 00:12:14.399 And so we just need everyone to rationally consider the pros and the cons of their decisions 00:12:14.399 --> 00:12:18.639 and to exercise more self-control and better restraint to behave better. 00:12:18.759 --> 00:12:23.580 And thus, our world can be healed from the inside out, one individual at a time. 00:12:24.360 --> 00:12:29.580 But while rightly acknowledging individual responsibility, conservatives telling people just to try harder 00:12:29.580 --> 00:12:35.259 and have more self-control, it doesn't sufficiently recognize the weakness and the instability 00:12:35.259 --> 00:12:37.139 of the human will. 00:12:38.440 --> 00:12:43.639 Even with all the independence, all the autonomy in the world, we can never bootstrap and will our way 00:12:43.639 --> 00:12:45.100 to righteous living. 00:12:46.360 --> 00:12:51.060 So I think if we're honest with ourselves, we all know that there is something sinister 00:12:51.059 --> 00:12:57.000 outside of us and inside of us, something we hate and yet that we're drawn to at the same time 00:12:57.000 --> 00:13:00.619 that has more influence on all of us than we care to admit. 00:13:01.619 --> 00:13:06.119 And if you're looking for a way to describe that, the Christian tradition calls this sin, 00:13:06.239 --> 00:13:11.379 particularly our sinful nature, the sinful nature that we've all inherited from our great, 00:13:11.479 --> 00:13:14.019 great grandfather, disobedient Adam. 00:13:14.019 --> 00:13:19.980 None of us can escape this sinful nature, even those of us who have been justified, 00:13:20.139 --> 00:13:22.639 even those of us who've been united with Christ. 00:13:23.159 --> 00:13:28.220 Until Jesus returns and calls us home, we will still have our sinful natures. 00:13:28.299 --> 00:13:31.000 This is what Paul is getting at in verse 15 when he says, 00:13:31.360 --> 00:13:34.100 For what I want to do, I do not do, but what I hate, I do. 00:15:03.360 So you see, the reason that even those of us who are justified, 00:15:03.620 --> 00:15:04.600 sanctified in Christ, 00:15:04.800 --> 00:15:08.600 the reason that we still fall into sin is that while sin has indeed lost its soul 00:15:08.600 --> 00:15:10.320 and ultimate influence upon us, 00:15:10.360 --> 00:15:12.460 our sin nature, it lingers. 00:15:12.940 --> 00:15:13.500 It descended from David according to the flesh, 00:19:44.480 --> 00:19:45.799 but then what does he say? 00:19:46.240 --> 00:19:48.059 But then he's raised into a new realm, 00:19:48.360 --> 00:19:49.000 a new state, 00:19:49.080 --> 00:19:49.759 a new status, 00:19:50.059 --> 00:19:53.180 no longer subject to the curse of sin and death and suffering. 00:19:53.360 --> 00:19:55.779 He's raised in the 00:21:04.399 --> 00:21:08.079 we now serve not just trying to obey the law to avoid condemnation, 00:21:08.720 --> 00:21:11.000 but we've been raised with Christ 00:21:11.000 --> 00:21:14.980 by the same spirit that raised Jesus from the grave. 00:21:15.519 --> 00:21:17.960 And so we don't just exist in the corruptible realm of the flesh, 00:21:17.960 --> 00:21:19.460 but in the newness of the helped us make sense of what Paul is talking about here 00:21:46.099 --> 00:21:49.019 and the terms that he's using, all right? 00:21:49.259 --> 00:21:50.519 But here's the bottom line, though. 00:21:50.619 --> 00:21:51.339 Here's the bottom line. 00:21:52.059 --> 00:21:53.419 What Paul is saying here 00:21:53.419 --> 00:21:55.980 is that that strength, 00:21:56.500 --> 00:21:58.039 that power that we're all looking for, 00:21:58.099 --> 00:22:00.899 that strength we need to fight sin in our lives, 00:22:01.559 --> 00:22:03.399 it's not going to come from the law. 00:22:03.500 --> 00:22:05.539 It's not just from some technique. 00:22:06.460 --> 00:22:09.159 It's only got to come from God. 00:22:09.200 --> 00:22:11.039 It's only going to come from the Holy Spirit. 00:22:11.539 --> 00:22:14.159 And we're going to talk more about that next week in chapter 8. 00:22:14.799 --> 00:22:17.159 But before Paul launches into chapter 8, 00:22:17.279 --> 00:22:19.899 he, and again, he anticipates another objection. 00:22:20.079 --> 00:22:21.139 And the objection goes like this. 00:22:21.220 --> 00:22:23.460 Paul, how dare you, 00:22:23.960 --> 00:22:27.460 how dare your gospel message spurn the law of God, 00:22:28.139 --> 00:22:31.980 this law that God gave to us through Moses, all right? 00:22:32.460 --> 00:22:34.980 So they're listening to everything that Paul's saying 00:22:34.980 --> 00:22:36.880 and how he's saying the law isn't enough. 00:22:37.299 --> 00:22:38.400 We need the Holy Spirit. 00:22:38.819 --> 00:22:41.160 And they're saying, how dare you speak against our law? 00:22:41.680 --> 00:22:42.759 So if you have your pew Bibles, 00:22:42.839 --> 00:22:44.860 again, you could turn back to page 913. 00:22:45.779 --> 00:22:47.220 And you can begin to see, though, 00:22:47.319 --> 00:22:51.160 why Paul's Jewish readers might have this objection. 00:22:51.740 --> 00:22:54.160 If you look at chapter 3, verse 28, 00:22:54.160 --> 00:22:54.759 Paul says, 00:22:54.759 --> 00:23:02.640 And then in chapter 5, verse 20, 00:23:02.700 --> 00:23:05.140 he even says that the law was brought in 00:23:05.140 --> 00:23:07.640 so that the trespass might increase. 00:23:07.759 --> 00:23:09.160 And then in chapter 6, verse 14, 00:23:09.240 --> 00:23:12.140 he says we're not under the law, but under grace. 00:23:12.579 --> 00:23:13.819 And now here in chapter 7, 00:23:13.839 --> 00:23:15.759 he's saying in verse 4 that we died to the law. 00:23:16.160 --> 00:23:19.180 In verse 5, that the law aroused our sinful passions. 00:23:19.180 --> 00:23:20.099 And then in verse 6, 00:23:20.160 --> 00:23:21.940 that we have been released from the law. 00:23:22.799 --> 00:23:25.779 And even worse, he's saying that we should live in a new way, right? 00:23:25.940 --> 00:23:29.140 And not in the old way of the law, of the written code. 00:23:30.080 --> 00:23:33.400 So it's like, man, Paul is sounding very un-Jewish right now. 00:23:33.840 --> 00:23:35.620 And honestly, even worse than that. 00:23:35.660 --> 00:23:38.279 See, for many in Paul's Jewish audience, 00:23:38.400 --> 00:23:39.580 the law was their identity. 00:23:39.720 --> 00:23:41.000 The law was their righteousness. 00:23:41.460 --> 00:23:43.799 Their highest boast is what made them special 00:23:43.799 --> 00:23:46.759 and distinguished them from all the other nations in the world. 00:23:46.759 --> 00:23:50.759 It was the very way of life given to them directly from God himself. 00:23:50.759 --> 00:23:53.740 For many of Paul's Jewish readers, 00:23:53.879 --> 00:23:59.140 the law wasn't just some ancient, irrelevant book of rules and restrictions, 00:23:59.799 --> 00:24:02.240 like maybe some of us Gentile Westerners might see it. 00:24:02.279 --> 00:24:05.279 But for them, the law was the way, the truth, and the life. 00:24:05.379 --> 00:24:08.519 And no one came to the Father except through the law. 00:24:09.480 --> 00:24:14.400 So for many, Paul seemed to be attacking the cornerstone of their Jewish identity. 00:24:14.400 --> 00:24:18.740 And it sounded to them like he was even calling the one thing that they were sure was good, 00:24:18.820 --> 00:24:21.880 the law, that he was calling it evil. 00:24:22.720 --> 00:24:24.720 And that's why Paul anticipates their objection. 00:24:25.120 --> 00:24:25.560 Verse 7, 00:24:25.920 --> 00:24:27.080 What shall we say then? 00:24:27.620 --> 00:24:28.740 Is the law sinful? 00:24:29.420 --> 00:24:30.440 To which he responds, 00:24:30.940 --> 00:24:32.220 Certainly not. 00:24:32.820 --> 00:24:33.580 Certainly not. 00:24:33.579 --> 00:24:41.259 So what Paul does here from verses 7 to 25 is he explains how the law is definitely not sinful, 00:24:41.759 --> 00:24:46.220 even while preparing us for something better. 00:24:46.299 --> 00:24:48.659 From verses 7 to 25, the point Paul makes, 00:24:48.699 --> 00:24:50.179 and this is going to be the point for the rest of the sermon, 00:24:51.460 --> 00:24:53.980 the point he's making is that God's law is good, 00:24:54.519 --> 00:24:56.679 but God's liberation is better. 00:24:57.419 --> 00:24:59.359 That's the point of 7 through 25. 00:24:59.359 --> 00:25:01.980 God's law is good, but God's liberation is better. 00:25:02.860 --> 00:25:03.940 So in verse 7, Paul says, 00:25:04.200 --> 00:25:04.880 Hold up, hold up. 00:25:04.960 --> 00:25:06.019 Okay, I am a Hebrew. 00:25:06.200 --> 00:25:07.700 Okay, I'm a Hebrew of Hebrews, all right? 00:25:08.099 --> 00:25:11.019 And I have the utmost respect for the law, 00:25:11.319 --> 00:25:12.759 but my fellow Jewish people, 00:25:12.819 --> 00:25:15.120 you need to understand what the law was meant to do 00:25:15.120 --> 00:25:17.900 and what the law wasn't meant to do. 00:25:18.539 --> 00:25:19.120 Now he says, 00:25:19.200 --> 00:25:20.440 Let me tell you what it was meant to do. 00:25:20.500 --> 00:25:21.460 First of all, verse 7, 00:25:22.259 --> 00:25:25.940 I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law, 00:25:26.339 --> 00:25:28.940 for I would not have known what coveting really was 00:25:29.620 --> 00:25:31.099 if the law had not said, 00:25:31.099 --> 00:25:32.899 You shall not covet. 00:25:33.879 --> 00:25:34.919 And what he's saying is, 00:25:35.059 --> 00:25:37.419 The law helped me understand what sin is. 00:25:37.859 --> 00:25:38.879 Like the sin of coveting. 00:25:39.240 --> 00:25:42.000 Man, I thought I was a super righteous Pharisee, he says. 00:25:42.079 --> 00:25:43.079 I never did anything bad. 00:25:43.139 --> 00:25:45.039 I did tons of super good religious stuff. 00:25:45.359 --> 00:25:48.240 But when I saw the final 10th commandment, 00:25:48.319 --> 00:25:49.219 Thou shalt not covet, 00:25:49.519 --> 00:25:50.699 oh man, it got me. 00:25:51.179 --> 00:25:54.679 It got me, and I realized I was way more sinful than I thought, 00:25:54.759 --> 00:25:57.740 and that sin wasn't a matter of merely following religious rules, 00:25:57.740 --> 00:26:00.420 but it was a matter of my heart and my heart's desires. 00:26:01.920 --> 00:26:04.720 And when I saw that, my coveting actually grew worse, 00:26:04.799 --> 00:26:09.500 showing me even more of how sinful I was. 00:26:09.559 --> 00:26:10.059 Verse 8, 00:26:10.059 --> 00:26:27.359 See, for Paul, it was like the more he was prohibited from coveting, 00:26:27.419 --> 00:26:31.980 the more he was exposed to this law from God telling him not to covet, 00:26:32.179 --> 00:26:35.000 actually it made him yearn for those things even more. 00:26:35.839 --> 00:26:37.299 And have you ever experienced that, right? 00:26:37.299 --> 00:26:40.379 Like someone told you you couldn't have something, you couldn't do something, bishop, Augustine of Hippo, 00:26:47.240 --> 00:26:50.039 he famously tells the story of how he was 16 years old, 00:26:50.500 --> 00:26:51.539 and just for the heck of it, 00:26:51.579 --> 00:26:54.240 he and his buddies went into a private vineyard, 00:26:54.339 --> 00:26:55.799 and they stole a bunch of pears, 00:26:56.200 --> 00:26:58.440 not because they were hungry, not because they liked pears, 00:26:58.480 --> 00:26:59.480 they didn't even eat any of them, 00:26:59.539 --> 00:27:01.139 they fed them to the hogs later, 00:27:01.700 --> 00:27:02.720 just for the sake of it. 00:27:03.099 --> 00:27:05.440 Just because they knew they weren't supposed to, 00:27:05.440 --> 00:27:08.539 just because they wanted to be defiant against the law. 00:27:09.039 --> 00:27:09.580 And he writes, 00:27:09.720 --> 00:27:11.860 It was foul, and I loved it. 00:27:12.420 --> 00:27:14.440 I stole simply that I might steal. 00:27:14.539 --> 00:27:17.700 My sole gratification was my own
