00:05:15.540 --> 00:05:25.439 I'm not promising a series on the book of Jeremiah, but we are just going to dip our toes in the water in the first couple of chapters over the next... 00:05:25.439 --> over the next 40 years? 00:05:37.520 --> 00:05:43.120 If you consider the next four decades ahead of us, do you think it'll be easier to be a Christian or harder to be a Christian? 00:05:43.120 --> 00:05:46.980 Now, I'm no expert when it comes to predicting the future. 00:05:48.079 --> 00:05:55.660 I think there can be a tendency among Christians to be doomsayers and pessimists, and I think we should resist that temptation. 00:05:56.620 --> 00:06:01.160 But I think we would be naive if we were to say we expect it to be easy. 00:06:01.160 --> 00:06:08.400 Absolutely, in certain parts of the world, it will certainly not be easy. 00:06:08.600 --> 00:06:19.200 I'm thinking, for example, of northern and central Africa, countries like Nigeria and neighbouring countries where Islamic extremists run rampant terrorising and murdering Christians. 00:06:19.199 --> 00:06:31.199 But even in the West, even in Western countries like Australia, politics and political discourse have become increasingly embittered. 00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:39.480 And sometimes Christians are either drawn into that or even fall afoul of it. 00:06:39.480 --> 00:06:43.680 You might remember in September last year the assassination of Charlie Kirk. 00:06:44.560 --> 00:06:52.700 I think that's an indication that there's an undercurrent of resentment in our society that can turn violent. 00:06:53.700 --> 00:07:00.319 And it emerges particularly at the intersection of religion and politics and social issues. 00:07:00.319 --> 00:07:04.399 Now, I think outright violence will likely remain rare. 00:07:05.959 --> 00:07:16.839 But sadly, violence is not inexplicable, given that there is, in some segments of our society, this undercurrent of hostility. 00:07:17.959 --> 00:07:19.819 Of course, hostility is not the whole story. 00:07:20.139 --> 00:07:21.519 It's not the full story. 00:07:21.519 --> 00:07:30.779 We're also, in our society, seeing a rise in sympathy toward Christianity and interest in Christianity. 00:07:30.899 --> 00:07:34.259 So I have a friend who's a university lecturer. 00:07:35.259 --> 00:07:38.379 And he's a lecturer in politics and political theory. 00:07:38.379 --> 00:07:47.779 As his university started back in the last couple of weeks, he's been teaching 800 first-year students in political theory and politics. 00:07:47.779 --> 00:08:05.139 And his interest in free speech and his argument against sort of the encroaching of post-modernism in academia, which has sort of led to an erosion of the concept of truth. 00:08:05.739 --> 00:08:07.719 So he's opposing that. 00:08:08.259 --> 00:08:13.939 That has led him to greater openness towards Christianity and even to engaging with the Bible. 00:08:13.939 --> 00:08:16.560 He's not yet a Christian. 00:08:17.160 --> 00:08:25.939 But there is sympathy there because of how he feels, where he feels our culture is heading and his discomfort with that. 00:08:28.180 --> 00:08:32.879 But no doubt, hostility is also present in at least some segments of our society. 00:08:33.320 --> 00:08:37.360 Now, in that present social climate, there are two risks, I think, for us as Christians. 00:08:37.500 --> 00:08:39.200 Here are, or there may be a number of them, but here are two. 00:08:39.200 --> 00:08:47.700 One risk is that we might become defensive, you know, develop an us-versus-them mindset. 00:08:49.080 --> 00:09:02.860 And so rather than trying gently to persuade those with whom we disagree, we, you know, we put the walls up and just aggressively assert our own rights, us-versus-them. 00:09:02.860 --> 00:09:19.360 But there's another risk, and that is that we might, that Christians might become timid, fearful, withdraw, cowed into silence, keep our heads down, try not to be noticed, try to avoid trouble. 00:09:19.360 --> 00:09:22.519 That's a danger, too. 00:09:23.879 --> 00:09:37.320 Well, the Bible passage today, Jeremiah chapter 1, will encourage us that we don't need 00:10:56.759 But the dual nature of the text here, verse 1, these are the words of Jeremiah. 00:10:57.699 --> 00:11:01.199 Verse 2, this is the word of the Lord. 00:11:01.740 --> 00:11:06.039 That's the dual nature of Scripture, both a divine and a human word. 00:11:06.899 --> 00:11:14.199 The Scriptures, including the book of Jeremiah, is a divine word, infallible, perfect, true, powerful. 00:11:14.200 --> 00:11:23.180 God asks in Jeremiah chapter 23, verse 28, what does straw have in common with wheat? 00:11:23.759 --> 00:11:25.560 And he's talking about his word. 00:11:25.660 --> 00:11:35.280 He's comparing his word, which is true and good and which nourishes the soul, with the empty imaginings of false prophets. 00:11:35.680 --> 00:11:38.560 What does straw have in common with wheat? 00:11:38.559 --> 00:11:44.500 In the next verse, Jeremiah 23, verse 29, God says, is not my word like a fire? 00:11:45.500 --> 00:11:51.659 Is not my word like fire and like a hammer that breaks rock in pieces? 00:11:52.979 --> 00:11:54.239 God's word is powerful. 00:11:54.359 --> 00:11:55.559 This is the word of the Lord. 00:11:56.279 --> 00:12:01.659 But when we read Jeremiah, we are also reading the words of Jeremiah. 00:12:01.659 --> 00:12:10.559 Jeremiah, now there are some books in the Old Testament where the author is unknown and essentially irrelevant, the human author, that is. 00:12:12.199 --> 00:12:14.199 Jeremiah is not one of those books. 00:12:15.199 --> 00:12:18.620 The man Jeremiah is very much present in this book. 00:12:19.019 --> 00:12:25.399 These are his words and they can't be separated from the life he lived and the things he experienced. 00:12:25.399 --> 00:12:33.600 Much of the book of Jeremiah, in fact, already existed in written form in his lifetime. 00:12:35.459 --> 00:12:44.699 But some ordering and framing took place after his death, like this introduction, verses 1 to 3, and a final chapter, an epilogue in chapter 52. 00:12:47.059 --> 00:12:48.340 But who was Jeremiah? 00:12:48.620 --> 00:12:53.120 Well, Jeremiah, we're told, he was the son of Hilkiah, which is a common name, so that doesn't tell us much. 00:12:53.120 --> 00:12:56.480 He's one of the priests at Anathoth in Benjamin. 00:12:56.620 --> 00:13:05.240 Anathoth is near Jerusalem, so near the capital city, about five kilometres to the northeast of Jerusalem. 00:13:05.860 --> 00:13:12.279 And so in this book, we'll often find Jeremiah in Jerusalem, at the temple or at other places in the city. 00:13:12.580 --> 00:13:17.480 We'll see him speaking with priests and indeed with kings and officials. 00:13:17.480 --> 00:13:29.840 His membership in a priestly family may have given him some access, some standing, but it seems he wasn't particularly of high rank himself. 00:13:31.539 --> 00:13:37.680 Well, Jeremiah was a young man when the Lord called him and he had a long ministry spanning about 40 years. 00:13:38.560 --> 00:13:42.220 And spanning the reigns of five kings, three of those five kings are named here. 00:13:42.279 --> 00:13:44.399 The other two only ruled for three months each. 00:13:44.399 --> 00:13:56.340 And each of the three named kings, Josiah, Jehoiakim and Zedekiah, are significant in the events that unfold, especially the second and third of those. 00:13:58.039 --> 00:14:05.840 But the events of the first chapter, his prophetic call, it seems, occurred in the 13th year of King Josiah. 00:14:05.840 --> 00:14:08.680 So this is around the year 626 BC. 00:14:10.920 --> 00:14:17.820 And yet at the outset, we're told about another event, an event that at that time was future, that would occur 40 years later. 00:14:17.820 --> 00:14:26.879 At the end of Jeremiah's ministry, in the year 587, the end of verse 3, the captivity of Jerusalem. 00:14:26.879 --> 00:14:38.320 The captivity of Jerusalem was a series of forced deportations by the Babylonians of the people of Judah into exile in Babylon. 00:14:38.539 --> 00:14:46.100 The most momentous of those was in 587, where after a horrific siege, King Nebuchadnezzar captured the city. 00:14:46.779 --> 00:14:48.279 He burned the city with fire. 00:14:48.399 --> 00:14:50.059 He burned the temple to the ground. 00:14:50.059 --> 00:14:52.879 And he carried off thousands of people as captives. 00:14:54.239 --> 00:15:01.739 And for those who lived through Jeremiah's ministry, that's the captivity of Jerusalem. 00:15:01.879 --> 00:15:02.599 That was future. 00:15:03.859 --> 00:15:06.199 And so in a sense, it was prospective. 00:15:06.419 --> 00:15:10.239 It was perhaps one possible future outcome. 00:15:10.779 --> 00:15:13.119 Maybe even a remote outcome in their minds. 00:15:13.120 --> 00:15:19.639 But for those of us who read the book of Jeremiah in its final form, that is in the past. 00:15:20.460 --> 00:15:24.659 And that terrible event casts its shadow over the whole book. 00:15:27.399 --> 00:15:33.019 So that comment at the end of verse 3 is sort of a major spoiler of what was coming in the rest of the book. 00:15:33.060 --> 00:15:36.879 And it places Jeremiah in that biblical history for us. 00:15:36.879 --> 00:15:39.000 Well, this is where the book's heading. 00:15:39.580 --> 00:15:47.039 But it begins with God calling young Jeremiah, this young priest, in the 13th year of Josiah's reign. 00:15:47.879 --> --> 00:16:30.720 And we see that God's power is active at the macro and the micro level. 00:16:30.720 --> 00:16:37.180 God forms the unborn child in the womb of his or her mother. 00:16:38.779 --> 00:16:40.779 And God rules over nations. 00:16:43.000 --> 00:16:50.000 The same Lord who determines the fate of nations also assigns the place and the calling of each individual. 00:16:50.240 --> 00:16:54.879 He says to Jeremiah, I appointed you a prophet to the nations. 00:16:54.879 --> 00:16:59.919 But Jeremiah himself is not so sure. 00:17:01.100 --> 00:17:06.079 Now at times, God calls people who are eager for appointment. 00:17:07.559 --> 00:17:14.839 So when God calls Isaiah, Isaiah says, or when God calls for someone, Isaiah says, here I am, send me. 00:17:14.839 --> 00:17:21.179 But often God calls those who have their own self-doubts. 00:17:21.179 --> 00:17:30.259 So King Saul, on the day that Samuel presented him to Israel, had to be fetched from where he was hiding among the supplies. 00:17:33.019 --> 00:17:34.659 Jeremiah had his doubts. 00:17:34.660 --> 00:17:36.240 Verse 6. 00:17:36.580 --> 00:17:44.000 Then I said, ah, Lord God, behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth. 00:17:48.420 --> 00:17:50.259 You know, I do not know how to speak. 00:17:50.580 --> 00:17:57.340 That objection had been tried by Moses before, as Lachlan mentioned in the kids talk. 00:17:58.279 --> 00:18:01.080 They've been tried by Moses, but God wasn't buying it. 00:18:01.079 --> 00:18:05.740 And maybe Jeremiah knew that that objection wasn't good enough on its own. 00:18:05.799 --> 00:18:07.279 So he adds, I'm only a youth. 00:18:08.099 --> 00:18:12.399 You know, Moses, he was a mature man when you call it, but I'm just a, I'm a youngster. 00:18:13.579 -->
