encourage us to learn more just about how precious a thing this hope is that we find in the scriptures. 00:00:47.019 --> 00:00:51.019 What do you think of when you think of the word hope? 00:00:51.020 --> 00:00:56.020 We use it in many different ways, many different contexts. 00:00:57.080 --> 00:01:01.420 But when we use it, so often there's an element of doubt. 00:01:01.420 --> 00:01:09.760 We say, for example, I hope it doesn't rain or I hope the ferry sails. 00:01:10.400 --> 00:01:23.040 But when we use it in that kind of context, we've always got an element of doubt in the back of our mind because we know the reality is that it's going to rain or there will be days that the ferry doesn't sail. 00:01:23.439 --> 00:01:25.420 So that hope isn't always certain. 00:01:26.280 --> here in Romans 15, it's a very certain hope and a hope that is secure because it's got a foundation that is Jesus Christ and God who has given us this great hope. 00:01:54.260 --> 00:02:01.960 If you read, for example, in Hebrews 11, verse 1, it speaks there of hope. 00:02:02.520 --> 00:02:09.560 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 00:02:09.560 --> 00:02:16.140 That hope is not maybe it will come to be, but it is a certainty. 00:02:16.140 --> 00:02:21.860 It is a hope, an assurance, even in the things that we do not see just now. 00:02:21.960 --> 00:02:36.900 It is still a certain and a sure hope that we have through faith because that hope is fixed on an object, on a person, on Jesus and what will come through him. 00:02:36.900 --> does that verse come close to describing me? 00:03:29.400 --> 00:03:34.840 Does it come close to describing what my life is like just now? 00:03:34.920 --> 00:03:40.719 Can I say that my life is in life and death? 00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:10.120 Well, as Paul concludes this section in Romans 15 at verse 13, 00:06:10.759 --> 00:06:14.860 he is doing so in this verse with what is really a prayer. What we're going to do is break it down into its individual letters. 00:06:34.379 --> 00:06:36.699 H-O-P-E. 00:06:37.100 --> 00:06:40.800 And look at hope from four different perspectives. --> 00:06:58.479 Like we're thinking of those who had leprosy in Jesus' day. 00:06:59.019 --> 00:07:00.120 They didn't have hope. 00:07:00.199 --> 00:07:01.479 They felt hopeless. 00:07:01.480 --> 00:07:05.040 Because there was nothing that could help them. 00:07:05.900 --> 00:07:07.939 And that's the way we are in our sin. 00:07:08.900 --> 00:07:10.240 We are hopeless. 00:07:11.740 --> 00:07:17.620 And so the word hope reminds us that we have a great need. 00:07:19.060 --> 00:07:22.720 Think of the question, what is my hope in life and death? 00:07:22.720 --> 00:07:30.000 Is your Scriptures, 00:08:20.039 --> 00:08:21.879 we might have hope. 00:08:22.519 --> 00:08:25.539 So hope has a history. 00:08:26.099 --> 00:08:31.740 And it's a history that speaks to us of the help that God has given to us. 00:08:32.240 --> 00:08:36.360 That's what it was saying here as Paul was writing to them 00:08:36.360 --> 00:08:38.299 and saying to ourselves as well, 00:08:39.039 --> 00:08:41.980 that the Scriptures, what was written in the past, 00:08:41.980 --> 00:08:45.659 was written for our instruction and our encouragement, 00:08:46.399 --> 00:08:48.259 that we might have hope. 00:08:49.720 --> 00:08:55.000 And so God is one who has come to give us help, to give us hope. 00:08:55.440 --> 00:09:00.019 The foundation of our hope is God, 00:09:00.120 --> 00:09:02.580 as verse 13 makes very clear for us. 00:09:02.580 --> 00:09:05.279 May the God of hope. 00:09:05.519 --> 00:09:08.680 He is the God of hope. 00:09:08.679 --> 00:09:13.519 And it is the God who has come to help us. 00:09:14.519 --> 00:09:17.019 So there's a foundation to this hope. 00:09:17.099 --> 00:09:19.159 There's a history to this hope. 00:09:19.239 --> 00:09:22.079 And it is God who has made something, 00:09:39.980 --> 00:09:41.039 the obvious question is, 00:09:41.159 --> 00:09:43.379 where is it going to come from? 00:09:44.039 --> 00:09:46.100 If you are to be fed when you're hungry, --> 00:09:59.399 if we're asking this question, 00:09:59.500 --> 00:10:03.299 if I am going to be filled with joy and peace and hope, 00:10:03.500 --> 00:10:04.519 we have to ask, 00:10:04.600 --> 00:10:06.079 are we going to the source? 00:10:06.080 --> 00:10:10.240 Are we looking in the right place for it? 00:10:10.660 --> 00:10:12.280 Well, if we're looking around us, 00:10:12.340 --> 00:10:14.740 we see so many things that offer hope, 00:10:15.020 --> 00:10:16.920 but it's always temporary. 00:10:17.639 --> 00:10:19.259 It's always uncertain. 00:10:20.280 --> 00:10:21.879 But when we look to the scriptures, 00:10:22.060 --> 00:10:24.040 we find the God of hope 00:10:24.040 --> 00:10:26.680 who is able to fill you. 00:10:28.360 --> 00:10:30.680 God is already described in verse 5 00:10:30.680 --> 00:10:32.120 as the God of endurance 00:10:32.120 --> 00:10:34.220 and the God of encouragement. 00:10:34.960 --> 00:10:37.000 He is the source of all of these things. 00:10:37.100 --> 00:10:41.220 And here we see He is the source of joy and peace 00:10:41.220 --> 00:10:43.220 and hope abounding, 00:10:43.360 --> 00:10:45.340 the help that He gives. 00:10:46.560 --> 00:10:48.399 Because when you look through the Old Testament, 00:10:48.600 --> 00:10:50.320 that verse 4 speaks about 00:10:50.320 --> 00:10:52.360 the scriptures that were written. 00:10:52.460 --> 00:10:54.980 You go to Isaiah 41, verse 10. 00:10:54.980 --> 00:10:58.580 And there in the midst of a people who felt hopeless, 00:10:58.779 --> 00:11:02.940 God's people who were captured by a foreign nation, 00:11:03.080 --> 00:11:04.440 taken into captivity, 00:11:05.279 --> 00:11:06.899 God speaks to them and says, 00:11:07.180 --> 00:11:08.920 Fear not, for I am with you. 00:11:09.240 --> 00:11:11.659 Be not dismayed, for I am your God. 00:11:11.740 --> 00:11:13.000 I will strengthen you. 00:11:13.139 --> 00:11:14.259 I will help you. 00:11:14.659 --> 00:11:19.159 I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. 00:11:19.159 --> 00:11:23.459 He is one who is able to help. 00:11:25.139 --> 00:11:27.480 And so He is the source of hope. 00:11:27.559 --> 00:11:29.519 And we are to come to that source. 00:11:29.659 --> 00:11:33.379 As Hebrews 4, verse 16 makes clear to us, 00:11:33.459 --> 00:11:35.039 Let us then with confidence 00:11:35.039 --> 00:11:37.539 draw near to the throne of grace 00:11:37.539 --> 00:11:39.139 that we may receive mercy 00:11:39.139 --> 00:11:43.720 and find grace to help in time of need. 00:11:43.720 --> 00:11:49.420 Hope reminds us that there is help for us. 00:11:50.460 --> 00:11:53.820 The second thing is the letter O. 00:11:54.620 --> 00:11:57.500 And this speaks to us of opportunity. 00:11:59.200 --> 00:12:01.840 And two ways we see opportunity here 00:12:01.840 --> 00:12:03.740 is that God is speaking 00:12:03.740 --> 00:12:08.519 and He is speaking to all, to everybody. 00:12:09.500 --> 00:12:11.980 As you read through the book of Romans, 00:12:11.980 --> 00:12:14.080 you find, and as you read through the scriptures, 00:12:14.279 --> 00:12:18.800 you find very often that there are two groups of people mentioned 00:12:18.800 --> 00:12:21.320 that this world is made up of. 00:12:21.860 --> 00:12:24.779 There are Jews and there are Gentiles. 00:12:25.159 --> 00:12:27.039 That's what the Bible makes very clear to us. 00:12:27.100 --> 00:12:29.539 There are Jews and there are Gentiles. 00:12:29.700 --> 00:12:31.980 Jews are directly descended from Israel, 00:12:32.820 --> 00:12:34.060 from the people of God, 00:12:34.300 --> 00:12:37.720 and all other nations, all other people are Gentiles. 00:12:37.860 --> 00:12:40.980 And so we therefore fall into the category of Gentiles, 00:12:40.980 --> 00:12:43.180 Gentiles, at least most of us will anyway. 00:12:44.440 --> 00:12:46.820 And what God is saying to us 00:12:46.820 --> 00:12:49.480 is that it is for everyone. 00:12:50.360 --> 00:12:51.620 You look in the Old Testament, 00:12:51.820 --> 00:12:53.960 God was looking after His own people. 00:12:54.480 --> 00:12:56.360 But here you see in the book of Romans 00:12:56.360 --> 00:12:59.019 that the word is going out to all. 00:12:59.659 --> 00:13:02.420 And you see it in how often it is quoted 00:13:02.420 --> 00:13:06.340 in these verses from 9 through to verse 12 00:13:06.340 --> 00:13:07.899 where scripture is quoted. 00:13:07.899 --> 00:13:12.559 You see the word Gentiles used in each of these verses. 00:13:12.899 --> 00:13:16.959 And it's reminding us that this is an opportunity for us all. 00:13:17.779 --> 00:13:20.759 So when you look at Romans 15 verse 12, 00:13:20.879 --> 00:13:22.620 the root of Jesse will come, 00:13:23.439 --> 00:13:27.100 even he who arises to rule the Gentiles. 00:13:27.360 --> 00:13:30.559 In him the Gentiles hope. 00:13:30.559 --> 00:13:33.139 It is speaking of Jesus, 00:13:33.859 --> 00:13:34.979 the root of Jesse, 00:13:35.599 --> 00:13:38.019 and it's speaking to us as a people, 00:13:38.139 --> 00:13:39.019 the Gentiles, 00:13:39.299 --> 00:13:43.079 that our hope is to be found in him. 00:13:43.239 --> 00:13:45.459 So God is speaking. 00:13:46.119 --> 00:13:48.019 And he is speaking to all. 00:13:48.479 --> 00:13:50.199 So that none of us need feel 00:13:50.199 --> 00:13:52.879 that we are far away from him, 00:13:52.919 --> 00:13:53.559 that we are not 00:13:53.559 --> 00:13:56.539 welcome to know this hope, 00:13:56.539 --> 00:13:58.120 that we are undeserving. 00:13:58.679 --> 00:14:00.779 There is no way we can have this hope. 00:14:00.980 --> 00:14:03.259 He is speaking to us all 00:14:03.259 --> 00:14:06.579 that we might find in him this hope. 00:14:08.039 --> 00:14:09.839 So there's an opportunity for all. 00:14:45.060 --> 00:14:47.259 do not harden your hearts. 00:14:47.259 --> 00:14:47.700 Today. 00:14:49.480 --> 00:14:51.279 But so often we're living in view 00:14:51.279 --> 00:14:52.179 that this life 00:14:52.179 --> 00:14:55.419 is just for us to live as we want. 00:14:55.460 --> 00:14:57.519 And there's nothing afterwards. 00:14:58.779 --> 00:15:00.080 Living day by day, 00:15:00.159 -->
