00:00:27.940 This morning, we are not part of a series, kind of a one-off. 00:00:27.940 --> 00:00:34.920 We'll be essentially helicoptering in or, you know, parachuting into a short passage out of the book of Hebrews. 00:00:36.579 --> 00:00:51.659 Let's take a look at it and remind ourselves about the greatness of Jesus and how that thing that drives us, that moves us, that motivates us, that changes us, that Jesus draws us to each other. 00:00:51.659 --> 00:01:01.219 And so this, just as a short reminder, the book of Hebrews is written, unknown author, written to Jewish converts. 00:01:02.039 --> 00:01:03.459 It's essentially sermonic. 00:01:03.579 --> 00:01:14.239 It's a sermon written so that people are encouraged in order to persevere, to be faithful to Christ in all the things that go on in their lives, whether good, bad or ugly, that they would remain faithful to Jesus. 00:01:14.239 --> 00:01:23.479 And they would see the greatness of Jesus above everything else, no matter what they see, no matter what they face, no matter what they're tempted to do, they would see Jesus as greater. 00:01:24.619 --> 00:01:28.879 But this morning, before we get started with our know, like if you've got a hot date and your friend is going on a hot date and they have spinach in your teeth, you want to help them because you love them. 00:02:19.500 --> 00:02:20.139 You're your friend. 00:02:20.139 --> 00:02:21.979 But that's like, hey, dude, something's wrong. 00:02:22.759 --> 00:02:32.679 And so any sort of critique or criticism, often we just get tense and we don't like feeling of someone else seeing something good that you've done. 00:02:48.139 --> 00:02:50.899 For a lot of us, it's really helpful and good. 00:02:51.139 --> 00:02:53.959 But a lot of us feels really awkward at times. 00:02:54.519 --> 00:02:56.619 I don't know how to I don't know how to receive a compliment often. 00:02:58.459 --> 00:03:00.919 What about how do you handle helping someone? someone outside of ourselves to help us, for us to help someone else. 00:03:23.520 --> 00:03:23.939 Right. 00:03:24.479 --> 00:03:32.960 And as we look at this passage today, as we try and remember who we are and what we're here for and what we're called to do. 00:03:32.960 --> 00:03:41.560 I want us to think about what we are called to do as we serve one another, as we love one another, because 00:03:51.200 And I've said it several times already in our worship service. 00:03:51.280 --> 00:03:52.379 We belong to a family. 00:03:52.500 --> 00:03:54.340 We belong to something bigger, a community. 00:03:54.719 --> 00:04:00.439 The church is something more than us just doing this Christian life by ourselves. 00:04:00.439 --> 00:04:03.359 And so we belong to something bigger. 00:04:04.479 --> 00:04:10.219 So let's pause there as you think about, think about the way you hear people speaking into your lives. 00:04:10.659 --> 00:04:16.439 Let's hear from the word of God so that we might think rightly about it. 00:04:17.459 --> 00:04:23.360 Let's, if you, in your Bibles, we're going to read Hebrews chapter 10, verses 19 to 25. 00:04:23.360 --> 00:04:35.699 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is through his flesh. 00:04:35.699 --> 00:04:49.379 And since we have a great high priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 00:04:49.719 --> 00:04:53.419 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering. 00:04:53.860 --> 00:04:55.860 For he who promised is faithful. 00:04:55.860 00:06:00.459 And immediately, if you read in chapter 10, right here in verse 19, I don't know if you've got a pew Bible. 00:06:02.379 --> 00:06:05.840 It says, therefore, brothers, and then there's a note. 00:06:06.519 --> 00:06:11.899 And if you look down and you have magnifying glass or you can see this, it says, or brothers and sisters. 00:06:11.899 --> 00:06:18.659 Right, there's this Greek word that tells us that this is not just to the men of the church, the Hebrew men. 00:06:18.719 --> 00:06:20.979 This is to God's people, all of God's people. 00:06:21.120 --> 00:06:26.699 It's a reminder, in many ways, of us, the reality of family within the church. 00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:29.620 A lot of us don't want to think this way. 00:06:29.719 --> 00:06:30.279 I understand. 00:06:30.859 --> 00:06:37.379 A lot of us come from families with brokenness, with hurt, with baggage. 00:06:37.379 --> 00:06:43.259 And no one, we don't want to think about this as a family affair. 00:06:44.339 --> 00:06:45.659 We don't want to think about this. 00:06:45.839 --> 00:06:53.339 But in reality, even though there are hard and bad things that happen in families, there are tough realities to being in a family. 00:06:53.800 --> 00:06:55.060 There is good, bad, and ugly. 00:06:56.120 --> 00:07:00.500 Even though that's true, it doesn't mean we should throw it away. 00:07:00.500 --> 00:07:05.420 It means that it should help change us when we look at it and we see it in the Bible. 00:07:06.139 --> 00:07:13.759 When we see it in the scriptures, it's language of tenderness and care and love that we need, that we need to be reminded of too. 00:07:15.240 --> 00:07:23.879 And so we need to be reminded that this is not just something that we've come to attend on Sunday morning from 930 to 1045, maybe 1030 today since the youth pastor's preaching. 00:07:23.879 --> 00:07:30.159 You know, it's not something that we've, it's not just something we attend. 00:07:30.259 --> 00:07:31.740 It's not something that we just do. 00:07:31.959 --> 00:07:35.939 It's something we belong to because we belong to the God of the universe. 00:07:38.579 --> 00:07:41.899 And so this is something that has to help change us. 00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:43.819 And it doesn't just change us. 00:07:43.920 --> 00:07:46.219 It changes our posture. 00:07:46.379 --> 00:07:48.420 It changes how we relate to one another, right? 00:07:48.459 --> 00:07:51.019 It doesn't just change us in kind of practical ways. 00:07:51.019 --> 00:08:07.299 But even though we know families are complicated, even when we know families are broken, even when we know the goal of this communication is to influence us, influence me, influence the reader, the original audience to remember that we belong to each other. 00:08:08.399 --> 00:08:13.919 That there's this family element to following Jesus, to being a part of it. 00:08:13.920 --> 00:08:21.560 And look, we all have different family issues, but we want to focus on the ideals in this moment, right? 00:08:22.520 --> 00:08:32.860 In an ideal world, though we know of everything that goes on, a family is a place of love, care, nurture, unity, beauty. 00:08:33.580 --> 00:08:36.039 It's a good and wonderful place. 00:08:36.039 --> 00:08:44.779 A family as it's meant to be is this amazing place where mothers and fathers love each other. 00:08:44.860 --> 00:08:51.079 Children are raised in beautiful to become these adult, perfect, great versions of themselves. 00:08:51.399 --> 00:08:55.079 Though some of us here struggle with that, including myself. 00:08:57.579 --> 00:08:59.799 We're called to be a family of faith. 00:08:59.799 --> 00:09:09.519 And immediately as we read this passage, we see this reality that we're called to be family. 00:09:10.639 --> 00:09:12.699 It's not the only time in the Bible this is mentioned. 00:09:12.819 --> 00:09:14.659 So this is why we can trust it. 00:09:14.759 --> 00:09:18.559 We can trust this kind of language is because it's not in isolation. 00:09:19.539 --> 00:09:19.679 Right. 00:09:19.799 --> 00:09:22.039 The Apostle Paul talks about adoption as sons. 00:09:22.159 --> 00:09:28.139 The Apostle Paul tells us that we have a spirit given to us that we cry out, Abba, Father. 00:09:28.139 --> 00:09:31.860 We have this reality that God is our father. 00:09:33.100 --> 00:09:41.840 And then if you go back further into the Old Testament, you see this language from Jeremiah where the prophet's talking about the God of the universe. 00:09:41.980 --> 00:09:44.199 He says, for I'm a father to Israel. 00:09:44.960 --> 00:09:47.699 Isaiah says, O Lord, thou art our father. 00:09:48.980 --> 00:09:56.759 Throughout the Old Testament, even, there's this language of God as our father in this familial language. 00:09:58.139 --> 00:10:03.039 And so we are called to remember that. 00:10:03.139 --> 00:10:03.519 I am. 00:10:04.220 --> 00:10:05.100 I don't. 00:10:06.039 --> 00:10:07.220 I'm a human being. 00:10:07.620 --> 00:10:11.279 I view things much more transactional than I should. 00:10:11.279 --> 00:10:17.480 I don't look often enough at people and say, oh, this is like my family. 00:10:19.319 --> 00:10:26.199 I often look at, is this something someone can give me or get me or what do I have to give to someone to get what I need? 00:10:26.200 --> 00:10:37.120 And don't even ask about the sins of a pastor where you're like much more looking at the church in a transactional way than you could ever imagine. 00:10:37.680 --> 00:10:39.259 The struggle against that is real. 00:10:39.259 --> 00:10:48.620 And yet, as we pause today, we must remember that we belong to one another in a family. 00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:50.439 The family of God. 00:10:51.639 --> 00:10:56.200 And that family has definitive characteristics. 00:10:57.019 --> 00:10:59.840 It has beautiful characteristics. 00:10:59.840 --> 00:11:04.600 It's not a family that's just kind of randomly made up. 00:11:04.759 --> 00:11:09.379 It's hopefully as a church, we're a family that's been changed by Christ. 00:11:10.879 --> 00:11:12.879 A family that's been made new. 00:11:14.540 --> 00:11:18.980 See, in this passage in Hebrews, the writer, who we don't know, right? 00:11:19.139 --> 00:11:21.360 There's lots of assumptions, lots of things we can think about it. 00:11:21.660 --> 00:11:24.120 Lots of ways that we can point, but we don't know. 00:11:24.120 --> 00:11:26.560 He says this. 00:11:28.159 --> 00:11:28.440 He said, 00:11:28.620 --> 00:11:30.299 Let us draw near, in verse 22, 00:11:30.440 --> 00:11:38.940 Let us draw near with a true heart and full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 00:11:39.360 --> 00:11:41.919 There is a previous state that we were in. 00:11:42.940 --> 00:11:44.299 We have been washed. 00:11:44.460 --> 00:11:45.419 We have been cleansed. 00:11:45.480 --> 00:11:46.440 We have been changed. 00:11:46.759 --> 00:11:49.519 We are no longer the people we were. 00:11:49.600 --> 00:11:50.500 We now belong. 00:11:50.500 --> 00:11:56.139 We are cleansed and made right by the work of Jesus, by the blood of Jesus, by the cross and his resurrection. 00:11:58.379 --> 00:12:04.480 We're a family that's marked by change and transformation by the power of the gospel. 00:12:07.299 --> 00:12:10.759 And we have to remember that we're all changed by Jesus. 00:12:10.759 --> 00:12:19.039 That those of us who are part of God's people is that we are cleansed and made holy by Jesus better Christian than the person next to me. 00:12:31.679 --> 00:12:39.739 I'll just, I'll keep, our goal is that we would worship the Lord because we, he is the one who's changed us. 00:12:41.979 --> 00:12:44.059 And this identifies us. 00:12:44.120 --> 00:12:45.359 This gives us an identifying marker. 00:12:45.699 --> 00:12:54.559 One of the things that we talk about in our youth ministry, when I hire summer interns, when I hire full-time staff, 00:12:54.559 --> 00:13:01.059 is, I don't, I don't try and put a biblical spin on it, but it's true in a sense, in a lot of ways, 00:13:01.139 --> 00:13:06.519 there are scripture that remind us of this, is that we have to remember that we are all on the same team. 00:13:07.219 --> 00:13:08.339 As one of the things. 00:13:08.539 --> 00:13:12.299 So, so when I make you mad, when I, which I inevitably do because I'm a sinner. 00:13:12.779 --> 00:13:15.799 And also, I just know my personality and know who I am. 00:13:15.919 --> 00:13:17.579 I'm very aware, I think. 00:13:17.580 --> 00:13:25.400 The reality is I would, as I make you mad, remember that we're on the same team. 00:13:26.060 --> 00:13:30.420 And I try and remind all of our staff made this happen, right? 00:13:58.440 --> 00:14:02.960 Because the Bible talks about how the, how people don't have this ability innately. 00:14:02.960 --> 00:14:06.300 We don't just make ourselves good and make ourselves right and make ourselves holy. 00:14:07.360 --> 00:14:07.800 Right? 00:14:08.240 --> 00:14:10.740 People are sinful since. 00:14:12.940 --> 00:14:13.340 Genesis. 00:14:15.840 --> 00:14:20.220 Jeremiah talks about how our hearts are deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. 00:14:21.100 --> 00:14:26.200 The Apostle Paul reminds us that in Romans chapter three, that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. 00:14:27.759 --> 00:14:30.259 So something must have happened to change us. 00:14:31.720 --> 00:14:34.100 Something must have transformed us. 00:14:35.000 --> 00:14:38.560 Something has made us new creations in Christ. 00:14:38.559 --> 00:14:42.659 And it was Jesus. 00:14:43.739 --> 00:14:54.959 This, this whole portion of, of chapter 10 of Hebrews is, is, is we kind of end it in the later verses of chapters, verses 24 and 25. 00:14:55.399 --> 00:14:59.019 With like exhortation to do, to love one another, to care for one another. 00:14:59.019 --> 00:15:00.720 So to live as that family. 00:15:02.000 --> 00:15:09.220 But he doesn't leave the summary of, he doesn't leave the, this exhortation with no reminder of the beauty of the gospel. 00:15:10.579 --> 00:15:12.399 He's reminding us that we've been made clean. 00:15:13.139 --> 00:15:22.100 He's been reminding us that we, he's, he's taking his whole argument for the first nine plus chapters of Hebrews and saying, here's a little summary of what I've already said. 00:15:22.100 --> 00:15:24.279 Remember Jesus, our great high priest. 00:15:24.440 --> 00:15:25.899 Remember you've been cleansed by Jesus. 00:15:26.320 --> 00:15:27.560 Remember how good he is. 00:15:27.700 --> 00:15:35.980 Remember, cling to this goodness, this truth, so that you might love one another as Christ has loved us. 00:15:37.399 --> 00:15:39.899 And so we're a family of changed people. 00:15:40.460 --> 00:15:44.899 Not because of us, but because, as 2 Corinthians 5 verse 21 puts it, 00:15:45.779 --> 00:15:50.120 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us. 00:15:50.120 --> 00:15:55.120 So that in him, we might become the righteousness of God. 00:15:57.179 --> 00:16:01.100 And it's because of Jesus, this is why this is such a wild passage. 00:16:01.279 --> 00:16:03.100 Like this is a, this is truly a wild passage. 00:16:03.220 --> 00:16:08.639 Like, and again, like this, I don't know how engineers talk about certain things because it's an engine, 00:16:08.720 --> 00:16:10.740 but I know how like pastors talk about the Bible. 00:16:10.860 --> 00:16:11.539 Like this is wild. 00:16:11.759 --> 00:16:13.399 And y'all are like, it's a Bible passage. 00:16:13.399 --> 00:16:22.039 But the reality of what this means, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 00:16:22.319 --> 00:16:25.459 something that we could not do, we could not enter the holy places. 00:16:25.819 --> 00:16:28.480 Only the priest, the great, the high priest could do it. 00:16:29.299 --> 00:16:33.019 By a new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is through his flesh, 00:16:33.240 --> 00:16:35.139 that his death achieved for us. 00:16:35.139 --> 00:16:42.080 His flesh, meaning that his death allows us this, this access to the God of the universe. 00:16:43.340 --> 00:16:46.819 And since we have a great high priest over the house of God, let us draw near. 00:16:47.259 --> 00:16:49.600 We get to draw near to the God of the universe. 00:16:51.340 --> 00:16:53.419 As God's people, we've been changed. 00:16:54.439 --> 00:16:56.980 And that change allows us access to God. 00:16:56.980 --> 00:17:06.360 It's a transformation that will trump anything we try and achieve this next year. 00:17:07.180 --> 00:17:10.019 As you wake up tomorrow and you look at your list of things you're going to do, 00:17:10.799 --> 00:17:14.779 there is no change greater than what Christ has done for his people. 00:17:16.500 --> confidence in things. 00:17:26.460 --> 00:17:29.059 There are lots of things that we can place our confidence in. 00:17:29.920 --> 00:17:32.000 You know, we live in a world full of great things. 00:17:33.620 --> 00:17:36.759 Money, power, our reputation. 00:17:37.640 --> 00:17:42.759 I can put my confidence in anything in the world that I really want to. 00:17:42.799 --> 00:17:46.720 I can create my own little space where I'm living in with confidence. 00:17:47.640 --> 00:17:50.660 I could put it in my reputation of just being a pastor. 00:17:50.660 --> 00:17:58.759 But our confidence in what we do and how we live in this world, 00:17:59.779 --> 00:18:02.500 whether we are interacting with Christians or not, 00:18:03.340 --> 00:18:08.040 our confidence must be in Jesus and his sacrifice. 00:18:08.039 --> 00:18:14.420 I'm confident because he's the high priest over the house of God. 00:18:15.920 --> 00:18:20.079 See, he's been given a title that I could never achieve. 00:18:22.059 --> 00:18:24.059 And I can be confident in him. 00:18:24.139 --> 00:18:27.319 I can trust him because of what he has done. 00:18:27.319 --> 00:18:37.659 I can tell you that I would not walk into a lawyer's office and be confident in asking them to fix a sickness. 00:18:37.660 --> 00:18:44.980 And in the same way, I wouldn't walk into a doctor's office and be confident in their ability to handle my lawsuit. 00:18:45.740 --> 00:18:50.880 And in the same way, I wouldn't walk into an accountant's office and say, 00:18:51.000 --> 00:18:54.240 do you know how to translate Spanish really well? 00:18:54.580 --> 00:18:54.759 Okay. 00:18:54.759 --> 00:19:00.240 Like there are people who have these expertise and these titles and these realities. 00:19:00.799 --> 00:19:07.339 And what we see with Jesus is we can place all of our confidence in our interactions with one another as a family, 00:19:07.700 --> 00:19:08.879 good, bad, or ugly, 00:19:09.759 --> 00:19:13.180 because
