00:06:35.300 --> 00:06:37.840 But you'll know through our studies 00:06:37.840 --> 00:06:39.340 that in John's gospel, 00:06:39.480 --> 00:06:43.139 the miracles are called signs. 00:06:44.280 --> 00:06:45.600 So the miracle, 00:06:46.500 --> 00:06:47.699 or the sign, 00:06:48.100 --> 00:06:50.620 points beyond itself to something else. 00:06:51.020 --> 00:06:52.040 In this case, 00:06:52.620 --> 00:06:53.639 and here's a summary, 00:06:54.920 --> 00:06:58.560 Jesus gives a blind man physical sight 00:06:58.560 --> 00:07:02.319 to show us that he has come to give us 00:07:02.319 --> 00:07:04.579 spiritual sight. 00:07:05.579 --> 00:07:08.420 He gives a blind man physical sight. 00:07:08.540 --> 00:07:09.360 That's the miracle. 00:07:10.040 --> 00:07:12.920 The sign is pointing to the fact 00:07:12.920 --> 00:07:15.240 that Jesus has come to give us 00:07:15.240 --> 00:07:17.160 spiritual sight. 00:07:17.920 --> 00:07:18.840 Look at verse 1. 00:07:20.279 --> 00:07:21.699 As he went along, 00:07:21.819 --> 00:07:24.079 he saw a blind man from birth. 00:07:25.360 --> 00:07:27.199 His disciples asked him, 00:07:27.199 --> 00:07:27.959 Teacher, 00:07:28.899 --> 00:07:29.920 who sinned? 00:07:30.899 --> 00:07:31.860 This man? 00:07:32.159 --> 00:07:33.699 Or his parents? 00:07:34.300 --> 00:07:35.659 That he was born blind? 00:07:36.479 --> 00:07:37.060 To them, 00:07:37.159 --> 00:07:39.579 there was only one logical conclusion. 00:07:40.099 --> 00:07:41.920 Either his parents had done something 00:07:41.920 --> 00:07:43.500 terribly wrong in their life, 00:07:43.819 --> 00:07:45.599 and God is punishing them 00:07:45.599 --> 00:07:48.579 for some sin in their life, 00:07:48.620 --> 00:07:50.039 and their son is born blind. 00:07:51.379 --> 00:07:52.019 Or, 00:07:53.139 --> 00:07:55.019 maybe God knew that 00:07:55.019 --> 00:07:56.459 as the man grew older, 00:07:56.459 --> 00:07:58.659 he would do some terrible things 00:07:58.659 --> 00:07:59.299 in his life, 00:07:59.699 --> 00:08:00.319 and so, 00:08:00.680 --> 00:08:02.739 he was punished with blindness 00:08:02.739 --> 00:08:04.399 before he was even born. 00:08:05.439 --> 00:08:06.899 Those are their thinkings. 00:08:07.259 --> 00:08:08.239 What is it, Jesus? 00:08:08.379 --> 00:08:09.719 It must be one or the other. 00:08:09.959 --> 00:08:10.819 Who sinned? 00:08:12.899 --> 00:08:15.740 Now, many people think like that. 00:08:17.019 --> 00:08:19.779 If everything I do is going well, 00:08:20.159 --> 00:08:22.379 then I must have done something good. 00:08:22.699 --> 00:08:24.000 God is blessing me. 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:27.240 But if I'm suffering in some way, 00:08:27.480 --> 00:08:29.600 I must have done something wrong. 00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:31.459 God is punishing me. 00:08:32.759 --> 00:08:34.279 Now, it's a common thought. 00:08:34.399 --> 00:08:35.720 We can think like that. 00:08:36.519 --> 00:08:38.740 But it's a terrible thought, 00:08:39.080 --> 00:08:42.279 because it's not true. 00:08:43.100 --> 00:08:44.580 Look at Jesus' response, 00:08:44.740 --> 00:08:45.299 verse 3. 00:08:45.299 --> 00:08:48.719 Neither this man 00:08:48.719 --> 00:08:51.039 nor his parents 00:08:51.039 --> 00:08:52.500 sinned. 00:08:53.379 --> 00:08:53.939 Yes, 00:08:54.120 --> 00:08:54.979 in a sense, 00:08:55.399 --> 00:08:56.419 all the struggle 00:08:56.419 --> 00:08:57.419 and all the suffering 00:08:57.419 --> 00:08:58.179 in the world 00:08:58.179 --> 00:09:00.240 is a result of the fall. 00:09:00.779 --> 00:09:02.099 But we cannot draw 00:09:02.099 --> 00:09:03.399 a direct line 00:09:03.399 --> 00:09:05.479 from our suffering 00:09:05.479 --> 00:09:06.500 to a particular sin 00:09:06.500 --> 00:09:06.740 and say, 00:09:06.939 --> 00:09:07.939 that was it. 00:09:08.979 --> 00:09:10.339 No, Jesus says, 00:09:10.419 --> 00:09:11.459 neither this man 00:09:11.459 --> 00:09:12.559 nor his parents 00:09:12.559 --> 00:09:13.179 sinned. 00:09:13.179 --> 00:09:15.839 But this happened. 00:09:16.839 --> 00:09:18.979 The man's blindness happened 00:09:18.979 --> 00:09:22.079 so that the works of God 00:09:22.079 --> 00:09:23.779 might be displayed 00:09:23.779 --> 00:09:25.199 in him. 00:09:26.279 --> 00:09:27.379 And what were the works 00:09:27.379 --> 00:09:29.000 that were going to be displayed 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:31.099 through this blind man? 00:09:31.819 --> 00:09:32.099 Well, 00:09:32.179 --> 00:09:33.299 through the healing 00:09:33.299 --> 00:09:34.399 of the blind man, 00:09:34.959 --> 00:09:36.779 Jesus was going to shine
