00:06:06.219 and how do we cultivate such a community? 00:06:06.220 --> 00:06:12.340 And I think John 13 is very helpful because Jesus knew that this was the last time 00:06:12.340 --> 00:06:15.080 that he would have with his disciples before he went to the cross. 00:06:16.080 --> 00:06:22.040 And so he's giving them this intensive graduate level training course. 00:06:23.120 --> 00:06:29.200 And John 13 to 17 is the longest single body of Jesus' teaching that we have in the New Testament. 00:06:29.199 --> 00:06:38.219 And he addresses some aspects of Christian community that I think are 00:08:18.740 --> 00:08:20.759 or the rising and falling of the stock market. 00:08:21.599 --> 00:08:26.699 He was talking with them about the things that were most crucial for their life with God. 00:08:27.620 --> 00:08:28.060 In fact, 00:08:28.839 --> 00:08:31.319 Jesus actually wasn't even really talking with them at all. 00:08:31.419 --> 00:08:33.259 He was showing them something. 00:08:34.319 --> 00:08:35.600 And what was he showing them? 00:08:35.679 --> 00:08:35.879 Well, 00:08:36.139 --> 00:08:37.679 we know that in the other Gospels, 00:08:37.939 --> 00:08:38.199 Matthew, 00:08:38.340 --> 00:08:38.500 Mark, 00:08:38.539 --> 00:08:38.919 and Luke, 00:08:38.919 --> 00:08:46.559 this is the moment where Jesus' disciples were arguing with each other about which of them was the greatest disciple. 00:08:48.079 --> 00:08:49.000 And Jesus, 00:08:49.159 --> 00:08:50.019 in the midst of that argument, 00:08:50.159 --> 00:08:50.899 he tells them, 00:08:51.019 --> 00:08:53.959 I am among you as the one who serves. 00:08:55.079 --> 00:09:01.079 And it was clear in that moment that none of the disciples were prepared to wash the feet of Jesus. 00:09:01.879 --> 00:09:04.000 None of them were prepared to wash each other's feet. 00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:05.659 And so, 00:09:06.259 --> 00:09:07.000 Jesus, 00:09:07.720 --> 00:09:09.940 in that moment, 00:09:10.860 --> 00:09:13.940 puts himself in the position that they should have been in. 00:09:14.039 --> 00:09:16.159 Jesus says he rose from the table, 00:09:16.259 --> 00:09:17.639 he took off his outer garments, 00:09:18.220 --> 00:09:20.159 and he tied the towel around his waist. 00:09:20.220 --> 00:09:23.620 Now, let's just pause there to make a cultural observation 00:09:23.620 --> 00:09:28.779 that what Jesus is doing here socially is not just jarring, 00:09:29.299 --> 00:09:30.240 but it's offensive. 00:09:32.259 --> 00:09:33.419 Because people, 00:09:33.740 --> 00:09:34.200 as you know, 00:09:34.299 --> 00:09:36.820 they didn't wear socks and shoes like we do. 00:09:37.019 --> 00:09:38.259 They wore sandals. 00:09:38.340 --> 00:09:38.799 It was hot. 00:09:38.879 --> 00:09:39.340 It was arid. 00:09:39.460 --> 00:09:41.960 They needed sandals on their feet. 00:09:43.259 --> 00:09:44.200 But also, 00:09:44.360 --> 00:09:46.080 very few first century homes 00:09:46.080 --> He's a person 00:10:57.819 --> 00:11:00.059 with great social honor. 00:11:01.019 --> 00:11:02.179 But he's so much more 00:11:02.179 --> 00:11:03.500 than just a host and a teacher. 00:11:03.639 -->
