Amen. 00:01:29.159 --> 00:01:40.539 I guess with the Olympics going on, one of my favorite stories is the story of the hare and the tortoise. 00:01:40.799 --> 00:01:45.439 I guess there's nobody in this room that doesn't know the story of the hare and the tortoise, 00:01:45.500 --> 00:01:49.819 but just in case you missed most of school, let me recap it for you. 00:01:50.340 --> 00:01:52.900 There is an arrogant, boastful hare. 00:01:52.900 --> 00:01:56.880 For the sake of our story, let's call him Usain. 00:01:57.400 --> 00:02:05.920 He is arrogant, he is prideful, and he loves to wax lyrical about his athletic prowess. 00:02:06.680 --> 00:02:15.040 It winds up all the animals until an exasperated, old, lethargic tortoise says, 00:02:15.039 --> 00:02:18.179 Right, Usain, I'll give you a race. 00:02:18.239 --> 00:02:21.519 For the sake of our story, why don't we call the tortoise John? 00:02:23.379 --> 00:02:31.899 And so the day comes, they're on the line, the hare sponsored by Puma with all the latest athletic gear, 00:02:31.899 --> 00:02:36.060 the tortoise wearing his dad's trainers that are three sizes too big, 00:02:36.199 --> 00:02:40.919 and the gun goes off, and Usain gets off to a great start. 00:02:40.919 --> 00:02:45.500 But he builds a seemingly unassailable lead. 00:02:45.699 --> 00:02:48.859 It really does look like John the tortoise is going backwards, 00:02:49.339 --> 00:02:54.879 while Usain goes over the horizon into the distance. 00:02:55.279 --> 00:03:01.560 Usain the hare finally finds himself so far ahead that he says, 00:03:01.639 --> 00:03:04.739 I can stop and have a little sleep. 00:03:04.740 --> 00:03:14.140 And so next to the tree, Usain, the hare curls himself up and starts to snore. 00:03:15.240 --> 00:03:21.400 Usain, the hare sleeps deeply, but eventually he is roused by the sound of cheering. 00:03:23.860 --> 00:03:26.980 That's the one thing about hares, they have big ears and can hear. 00:03:26.979 --> 00:03:34.639 Well, so the hare thinks, well, I better get on my way, I better get going to see what all that commotion is. 00:03:34.679 --> 00:03:35.739 I'm surely going to win. 00:03:35.839 --> 00:03:38.519 John must still be just off the start line. 00:03:38.519 --> 00:03:44.379 And so he runs off confident of certain victory, but he turns. 00:03:45.379 --> 00:03:49.419 He enters the final straight and is absolutely distraught. 00:03:49.419 --> 00:03:58.219 That John the tortoise is already in the winner's enclosure, standing on top of the podium with the gold medal. 00:03:58.819 --> 00:04:01.339 And the moral of the story is twofold. 00:04:01.759 --> 00:04:06.519 The first one, slow and steady wins the race in the case of the tortoise. 00:04:07.819 --> 00:04:12.759 But Usain the hare is a real warning about complacency. 00:04:13.959 --> 00:04:15.379 To think I've done enough. 00:04:15.439 --> 00:04:16.879 I can take my foot off the gas. 00:04:16.980 --> 00:04:18.519 I can take it easy. Sardis that we're going to read this letter to is very much a hare of a church. 00:04:34.680 --> 00:04:38.199 A church that seems to have started really well. 00:04:38.779 --> 00:04:41.560 A church that had so much going for it. 00:04:41.799 --> 00:04:43.359 A great reputation. 00:04:43.360 --> 00:04:48.120 But Jesus cuts through all the pomp and circumstance. 00:04:48.540 --> 00:04:50.439 He cuts right to the issue. 00:04:50.780 --> 00:04:55.439 And he says, you actually have the cancer of complacency. 00:04:55.639 --> 00:05:02.759 The cancer of complacency has crept in and it is terminal if you don't do something about it. 00:05:02.759 --> 00:05:09.699 So if you've got a Bible near you, please let's turn to Revelation chapter 3 and verses 1 to 6. 00:05:09.740 --> 00:05:13.740 If you're not familiar with your Bible, then Revelation is at the very end. 00:05:14.779 --> 00:05:21.300 And so if you find the last book of the Bible, Revelation, and look for the big number 3 and the 00:06:49.519 And Sardis is an important city. 00:06:49.519 --> 00:06:52.560 It has a long and rich history. 00:06:52.740 --> 00:06:56.620 It is a real jewel of the ancient world. 00:06:57.240 --> 00:07:01.839 Successive empires treat Sardis with great esteem. 00:07:02.180 --> 00:07:04.959 It was the capital of the Lydian kingdom. 00:07:05.479 --> 00:07:09.539 It was a key trading city in the Persian Empire. 00:07:09.540 --> 00:07:16.140 And now at this time it was a seat of the pro-consul of the Roman Empire. 00:07:17.319 --> 00:07:21.080 The city was also strategically perfect. 00:07:22.860 --> 00:07:25.260 It's in modern day Turkey. 00:07:26.320 --> 00:07:32.400 It overlooks a very flat and fertile river plain, the Hermos Valley. 00:07:32.399 --> 00:07:36.419 But it itself sits on this kind of rocky outcrop. 00:07:37.019 --> 00:07:41.779 That it is an elevated city about 450 meters up. 00:07:42.299 --> 00:07:48.959 Surrounded on three sides by really sheer cliffs that is almost impossible to climb. 00:07:50.399 --> 00:07:53.399 And then going down onto the valley there's a very steep incline. 00:07:54.199 --> 00:07:56.000 How you get in and out of the city. 00:07:56.299 --> 00:07:59.439 It is a strategic stronghold. 00:07:59.439 --> 00:08:06.519 Think a bit like a whole city up on top of the hill where Edinburgh Castle sits. 00:08:06.980 --> 00:08:09.019 It looks over a flat plain. 00:08:09.899 --> 00:08:12.319 You can't get to it except up one way. 00:08:13.459 --> 00:08:14.980 It has massive walls. 00:08:15.360 --> 00:08:17.620 It is basically impenetrable. 00:08:18.060 --> 00:08:21.579 Think of Helm's Deep from Lord of the Rings. 00:08:23.420 --> 00:08:28.639 Sardis has this reputation of being the epitome of safety and security. 00:08:28.639 --> 00:08:30.479 Impregnable. 00:08:30.979 --> 00:08:31.860 Impenetrable. 00:08:32.600 --> 00:08:36.659 And as well as being very secure it is also ridiculously wealthy. 00:08:37.080 --> 00:08:39.799 Like Thyatira we looked at with Paul last week. 00:08:40.059 --> 00:08:42.240 It has great trading routes. 00:08:42.559 --> 00:08:45.600 It's at the intersection of five major roads. 00:08:46.279 --> 00:08:50.039 It does wonderful works with dyeing clothes. 00:08:50.139 --> 00:08:51.939 Particularly dyeing them white. 00:08:51.940 --> 00:08:57.700 That Sardis textile industry is booming. 00:08:58.800 --> 00:09:00.460 You have a place of safety. 00:09:01.160 --> 00:09:02.640 You have a place of great wealth. 00:09:02.940 --> 00:09:08.900 In fact it's so wealthy that in AD 17 a massive earthquake almost demolishes the city. 00:09:10.020 --> 00:09:14.520 And the Emperor Tiberius says well we'd like to help you fund the rebuilding. 00:09:15.180 --> 00:09:17.860 And the guys in Sardis say it's alright we've got enough. 00:09:17.860 --> 00:09:20.700 Kind of like Norway in that way. 00:09:21.659 --> 00:09:22.879 We've got enough. 00:09:23.519 --> 00:09:28.659 The third thing about Sardis is it's almost unique in the ancient world. 00:09:28.720 --> 00:09:31.100 Because it seems to be a place of great tolerance. 00:09:31.100 --> 00:09:36.759 So one of the things unique about Sardis is that the synagogue is right in the city centre. 00:09:37.360 --> 00:09:40.220 That is really unusual in the ancient world. 00:09:41.240 --> 00:09:43.960 That normally you'll find the synagogue on the outskirts. 00:09:45.879 --> 00:09:51.680 And all over Sardis there is huge numbers of shrines and gods and temples. 00:09:51.940 --> 00:09:54.639 They love Artemis much like Ephesus. 00:09:54.639 --> 00:10:03.299 But it seems that they're so tolerant that they'll let the Jews have their main worship centre right in the city centre as well. 00:10:04.159 --> 00:10:06.159 It makes Sardis prosperous. 00:10:06.980 --> 00:10:08.500 It makes it comfortable. 00:10:09.240 --> 00:10:12.179 It makes it seemingly very, very secure. 00:10:12.179 --> 00:10:18.979 And it seems that so with the city as with the church. 00:10:20.099 --> 00:10:26.839 Because Jesus seems to cut through all of that and diagnoses what's really wrong with the church. 00:10:26.959 --> 00:10:32.679 That the cancer of complacency has entered the church's bloodstream. 00:10:34.139 --> 00:10:39.620 Comfort has led to complacency, security to smugness, affluence to arrogance. 00:10:39.620 --> 00:10:45.820 One commentator writes this about Sardis. 00:10:46.940 --> 00:10:58.560 The church at Sardis had become content with mediocrity, lacking both the enthusiasm to entertain a heresy or the depth of conviction to provoke persecution. 00:10:59.159 --> 00:11:02.220 It was too innocuous to be worth bothering about. 00:11:03.419 --> 00:11:09.120 What a diagnosis of the church to lack the enthusiasm to entertain a heresy. 00:11:09.620 --> 00:11:13.580 Or to not have deep enough convictions to provoke persecution. 00:11:14.440 --> 00:11:19.580 It was the very epitome of what nominal Christianity looks like. 00:11:19.700 --> 00:11:23.799 Inoffensive, innocuous and utterly impotent. 00:11:23.799 --> 00:11:29.959 And this letter that Jesus writes cuts right to the heart. 00:11:30.620 --> 00:11:32.240 Cuts through all the reputation. 00:11:33.240 --> 00:11:35.519 And he tells them what it's really like. 00:11:35.939 --> 00:11:37.899 And it is a devastating letter. 00:11:39.179 --> 00:11:44.259 It's unique almost among all the letters because Jesus has very little commendation for them. 00:11:44.259 --> 00:11:48.860 All the other churches, Jesus has found something good to say about them. 00:11:50.639 --> 00:11:51.939 And yet he writes this. 00:11:52.019 --> 00:11:53.819 But he doesn't write it just to harm. 00:11:54.100 --> 00:11:55.360 He writes it to heal. 00:11:56.299 --> 00:11:59.019 It is in many ways like chemotherapy. 00:11:59.419 --> 00:12:01.240 That chemotherapy is very tough. 00:12:02.080 --> 00:12:06.139 My mother-in-law just finished her chemotherapy on Wednesday and it's nearly wiped her out. 00:12:06.139 --> 00:12:10.279 But it's not done just to hurt. 00:12:10.399 --> 00:12:11.439 But it's done to heal. 00:12:12.360 --> 00:12:14.240 And that's why Jesus writes this letter. 00:12:15.139 --> 00:12:17.620 And Jesus is the right one to write the letter. 00:12:17.699 --> 00:12:19.100 Because look how he describes himself. 00:12:19.539 --> 00:12:22.759 These are the words of him who holds the sevenfold spirit. 00:12:22.860 --> 00:12:24.340 The perfect spirit of God. 00:12:24.340 --> 00:12:30.540 The one whose spirit has gone out into 00:13:42.620 It has fresh Arabica bean coffee. 00:13:43.039 --> 00:13:46.120 It has the nicest pastries to eat in the morning. 00:13:46.120 --> 00:13:49.120 To those looking in, it looks like it's jesus and i think jesus gives us some ideas of what 00:15:53.099 --> 00:16:00.459 is going on we see the early promise has not been fulfilled look what he says i have found 00:16:00.460 --> 00:16:06.660 your deeds unfulfilled unfinished in the sight of my god it seemed that they started well they had 00:16:06.660 --> 00:16:13.240 loads of stuff going really brilliantly but at some point they took their foot off the gas 00:16:13.240 --> 00:16:22.100 started coasting through complacency crept in and through it though it still looked healthy on the 00:16:22.100 --> 00:16:28.820 outside on the inside it was hollow the church inside has had early promise not fulfilled 00:16:28.820 --> 00:16:37.540 and it had early convictions not sustained look at verse three remember therefore what you have 00:16:37.540 --> 00:16:44.160 received and heard their problem was that they didn't they knew the gospel 00:16:44.160 --> 00:16:53.620 jesus says to them remember what you heard remember what you received they had great teaching in the 00:16:53.620 --> 00:17:03.179 past but what was the problem they let it slide they were well taught but rather than keeping hold of 00:17:03.179 --> 00:17:09.299 it they let it slip through their fingers they failed to keep the main thing the main thing they become 00:17:09.299 --> 00:17:16.380 evangelifish they had absolutely no backbone and just went wherever the tide of popular culture 00:17:16.380 --> 00:17:25.100 evangelifish they had great teaching in the past but rather than keeping hold of the past but i think 00:17:25.100 --> 00:17:32.220 that early purity not maintained the only good thing in this letter is in verse four 00:17:32.220 --> 00:17:43.420 yet you have a few people in sardis who have not soiled their clothes it seems that moral standards have 00:17:43.420 --> 00:17:51.500 started to slide and that the the community of sardis had started to infiltrate the church that the people 00:17:51.500 --> 00:17:57.420 in sardis had started compromising with all sorts of stuff that they shouldn't have compromised with 00:17:57.420 --> 00:18:05.100 it's a deliberate metaphor for sardis sardis is famous for dyeing clothes bright white 00:18:05.099 --> 00:18:13.579 and what does jesus say you've soiled your clothes place that's renowned for making things clean 00:18:14.539 --> 00:18:23.019 the people's moral fiber has ended in soiled clothes i don't know if you saw a couple of years ago but 00:18:23.019 --> 00:18:31.259 microsoft launched an artificial intelligence bot to live on the web to live in cyberspace and to learn 00:18:31.259 --> 00:18:37.339 lots of things everything it could from interacting with real people and they said it that it should 00:18:37.339 --> 00:18:42.140 last for six months and then they'd take it back and analyze all that it had learned from all the 00:18:42.140 --> 00:18:48.539 people that it interacted with online they had to take it down after three hours because it had become 00:18:48.539 --> 00:18:56.379 a racist white supremacist because that's the kind of people it was interacting with online 00:18:56.380 --> 00:19:05.500 it's the perfect example of what it means to be infected by culture and it seems that the people in 00:19:05.500 --> 00:19:11.740 sardis had been utterly infected by the culture by the few that jesus holds up 00:19:13.500 --> 00:19:22.540 so the cancer of complacency has crept into sardis and complacency is a clear and present danger for all of us 00:19:22.539 --> 00:19:31.659 us still are we still working hard for the lord or are we just keeping up appearances 00:19:32.700 --> 00:19:39.500 are we still treasuring the gospel and holding on to it remembering it rehearsing it preaching it to 00:19:39.500 --> 00:19:48.940 ourselves every day or has it just become another thing in life and what about our moral standards are we 00:19:48.940 --> 00:19:57.340 still pursuing holiness or have we been compromised in all kinds of ways are you still pressing in on 00:19:57.340 --> 00:20:04.860 god's on in god's service are you still pressing into god's word to mine treasure from it are you still 00:20:04.860 --> 00:20:11.259 pursuing holiness good diagnostic questions about whether complacency has crept in 00:20:11.259 --> 00:20:17.740 do you think the best days of your christian life are ahead of you or are they only behind 00:20:21.819 --> 00:20:28.059 what are you still trusting god for are you still trusting god for something 00:20:30.220 --> 00:20:32.779 or has that dependency just slipped 00:20:32.779 --> 00:20:41.500 what sins are you still fighting or have you just gone into a cohabiting relationship 00:20:43.740 --> 00:20:46.619 what opportunities for outreach do you still have
