to Romans chapter 00:02:55.819 --> 00:02:57.080 6, verse 15. 00:02:57.860 --> 00:03:04.580 And we'll look at how the Bible tries to bring home to our hearts that moral and spiritual 00:03:04.580 --> 00:03:09.160 rules have an inadequacy and a powerlessness to them. 00:03:09.640 --> 00:03:14.980 That means that human beings both function in a different way and we need something different. 00:03:16.160 --> 00:03:20.520 In Romans 6, 15, it begins like this. 00:03:20.720 --> 00:03:26.640 What then are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? 00:03:26.639 --> 00:03:28.379 00:04:18.139 --> 00:04:22.879 what he's going to spend the next 15 and a half chapters talking about. 00:04:23.180 --> 00:04:26.300 And everything in the book of Romans sort of fits into this. --> 00:05:24.980 When I was in my previous church, I was there for seven years before people would start to 00:05:24.980 --> 00:05:31.379 trust me with the fact that they were lying to all of their they're off in California or 00:05:38.139 --> 00:05:38.860 they're in Australia. 00:05:39.439 --> 00:05:46.000 And finally, they revealed to me that they were actually in Kingston Pen doing a long 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:47.699 time in jail for armed robbery. 00:05:48.459 --> 00:05:50.199 And they were deeply ashamed of it. 00:05:51.040 --> 00:05:55.519 And it took them seven years of knowing me before they would trust me with it. 00:05:55.620 --> 00:05:59.219 And they would, in a sense, swear me to secrecy that I couldn't tell others about it. 00:05:59.220 --> 00:06:05.240 And, you know, at the heart of the gospel is the story that Jesus dies as a convicted criminal 00:06:05.240 --> 00:06:10.760 and dies a death which is so shameful that Roman citizens were not allowed to be put to 00:06:10.760 --> 00:06:14.940 death that way, no matter how bad they, what they'd done. 00:06:16.260 --> 00:06:22.340 And so it was very easy for Christians to be ashamed of this, that their founder died the 00:06:22.340 --> 00:06:25.240 death of a convicted slave, in a sense. 00:06:25.240 --> 00:06:28.300 But Paul says he's not ashamed of the gospel. 00:06:28.460 --> 00:06:29.680 He's not ashamed of the message. 00:06:30.240 --> 00:06:34.220 That the message talks of that what he's, the gospel is a message. 00:06:34.740 --> 00:06:41.620 And the message is that God's power can come to Jewish. 00:07:17.300 --> 00:07:22.640 And in the gospel, the righteousness of God, which means that God will act in the right way 00:07:22.640 --> 00:07:24.660 to make us right with himself. beautiful or good looking or any of these 00:09:01.259 --> 00:09:01.480 things. 00:09:01.780 --> 00:09:04.340 And on the same time, it doesn't matter if I'm a victim. 00:09:04.440 --> 00:09:08.040 If I've been the most victimized person on the planet and therefore somehow or another 00:09:08.040 --> 00:09:11.900 the planet and the entire universe owes me because I am so victimized. 00:09:11.899 --> 00:09:17.019 The fact is the Gospel says all of that is completely and utterly irrelevant to God. 00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:19.319 I cannot make myself right with God. 00:09:20.079 --> 00:09:21.220 please? 00:10:08.639 --> 00:10:18.080 Because you're saying that Jesus says that God doesn't weigh our good things. 00:10:18.159 --> 00:10:19.139 He doesn't weigh our merits. 00:10:19.220 --> 00:10:20.139 He just pardons us. 00:10:20.240 --> 00:10:26.379 And if that's the case, George, why on earth should anybody pay any attention to anything in the Bible 00:10:26.379 --> 00:10:30.199 and any type of moral or spiritual rule to live their lives that way? 00:10:30.200 --> 00:10:36.620 You can see that there's a certain degree of logic to asking that question. 00:10:37.340 --> 00:24:35.380 --> 00:24:39.920 and the type of complete and utter violence 00:24:39.920 --> 00:24:42.600 and degradation done to other human beings, 00:24:43.040 --> 00:24:46.660 just as in the worst of the American South has happened. 00:24:46.860 --> 00:24:48.660 And that's not what's meant as well. 00:24:49.100 --> 00:24:50.800 At the time that Paul was writing this, 00:24:50.960 --> those things, 00:25:44.440 --> 00:25:45.259 and he was a doulos. 00:25:45.580 --> 00:25:47.560 If you read the book of Daniel, 00:25:48.539 --> 00:25:51.120 Daniel and his friends were doulos.
