--> 00:02:50.740 you will get a variety of answers depending on what part of the world you're in. 00:02:50.840 --> 00:02:52.920 But there will likely be some common answers. 00:02:53.600 --> 00:02:55.760 Some might say natural disasters. 00:02:55.759 --> 00:02:58.099 Some might say demons. 00:02:59.139 --> 00:03:00.359 Some might say diseases. 00:03:01.579 --> 00:03:03.139 Others might say death. 00:03:04.379 --> 00:03:10.019 In the ancient world, these four things were seen as the chief problems that beset humanity. 00:03:10.840 --> 00:03:14.000 Disasters, demons, diseases, and death. 00:03:14.500 --> 00:03:18.259 And in chapter 8, Luke intentionally recounts events 00:03:18.259 --> 00:03:24.319 that systematically demonstrate that Jesus has mastery over all four of these things. 00:03:24.319 --> 00:03:28.479 So in Luke 8, 22 to 25, Jesus calmed the storm at sea, 00:03:28.599 --> 00:03:32.180 showing his mastery over nature and over natural disasters. 00:03:32.400 --> 00:03:37.759 In Luke 8, 26 to 39, Jesus cured a demoniac, a demon-possessed man, 00:03:38.239 --> 00:03:41.680 showing his mastery over even the most powerful and stubborn demons. 00:03:41.680 --> 00:03:49.219 And then in today's passage, we see a double miracle where Jesus shows his mastery over diseases 00:03:49.219 --> 00:03:50.920 and even death itself. 00:03:51.460 --> 00:03:58.120 And Luke's purpose in telling us these stories is to assure us that no matter how desperate our situation is, 00:03:58.600 --> 00:04:00.780 whatever problems we might be facing in our world, 00:04:00.860 --> 00:04:04.400 we can trust in Jesus who can save us. 00:04:04.900 --> 00:04:06.180 Jesus who raises the dead. 00:04:06.300 --> 00:04:07.740 That's really the main point of this passage. 00:04:07.740 --> 00:04:12.560 So first, we'll look at the disease, verses 48 to 48, verses 40 to 48, 00:04:12.760 --> 00:04:16.100 and then we'll look at death in verses 49 to 56. 00:04:16.720 --> 00:04:24.139 So let's turn to verses 40 to 48 first and look at the disease that Jesus shows mastery over. 00:04:24.660 --> 00:04:29.980 When Jesus returned, it says, to the Jewish region of Galilee after the healing of the demoniac, 00:04:30.439 --> 00:04:32.240 in the Gentile region of the Gerasenes, 00:04:32.340 --> 00:04:34.840 it says at verse 40 that the crowd welcomed him. 00:04:34.839 --> 00:04:39.459 So he's come back to the Jewish part of the region on the other side of the Sea of Galilee, 00:04:39.619 --> 00:04:40.579 and they're welcoming him. 00:04:40.639 --> 00:04:41.519 They were waiting for him. 00:04:41.879 --> 00:04:45.439 And there was also a man named Jairus who was a ruler of the synagogue. 00:04:46.819 --> 00:04:50.000 The Jewish religious leaders, as we've seen throughout the Gospel of Luke, 00:04:50.060 --> 00:04:51.879 have generally been opposed to Jesus. 00:04:52.279 --> 00:04:54.959 But in this case, he's an exception to the rule. 00:04:55.379 --> 00:04:57.279 He seems favorable toward Jesus. 00:04:57.379 --> 00:04:58.479 He seems open to him. 00:04:58.480 --> 00:05:00.980 And there's a good reason for that, 00:05:01.400 --> 00:05:04.819 because he's in a very desperate situation and needs Jesus' help. 00:05:05.540 --> 00:05:07.480 He's described as a ruler of the synagogue, 00:05:07.700 --> 00:05:11.000 which means he was the main elder of the local synagogue. 00:05:11.240 --> 00:05:14.680 So the Christian equivalent would be the senior pastor of a church. 00:05:15.220 --> 00:05:18.379 And he functions as kind of a civic leader as well. 00:05:18.439 --> 00:05:20.520 So it's a little more than just the pastor of a church here. 00:05:20.520 --> 00:05:21.660 He's a leader of the synagogue, 00:05:21.879 --> 00:05:25.000 but also a civil kind of society leader for the Jews. 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:29.480 But notwithstanding that man's kind of elevated position, 00:05:29.720 --> 00:05:31.899 it says in verses 41 to 42, 00:05:32.399 --> 00:05:34.439 that falling at Jesus' feet, 00:05:34.600 --> 00:05:36.639 he implored him to come to his house. 00:05:37.279 --> 00:05:39.240 For he had an only daughter, 00:05:39.800 --> 00:05:41.379 about 12 years of age, 00:05:41.959 --> 00:05:42.920 and she was dying. 00:05:44.139 --> 00:05:46.680 Luke is fond of adding details like that, 00:05:46.680 --> 00:05:49.300 that add kind of this emotional weight to the stories. 00:05:49.439 --> 00:05:51.079 This is Jairus' only daughter. 00:05:51.079 --> 00:05:55.000 He's so desperate that he forsakes all else 00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:57.399 and comes to Jesus and falls at his feet 00:05:57.399 --> 00:05:58.459 and begs him to come. 00:05:59.759 --> 00:06:01.019 And this is tragic, 00:06:01.019 --> 00:06:05.019 because this girl is described as about 12 years of age. 00:06:05.680 --> 00:06:08.399 That means, as the ancient world, 00:06:08.439 --> 00:06:10.379 and actually even nowadays people reckon it, 00:06:10.839 --> 00:06:13.680 she's just entering the prime of her life. 00:06:14.539 --> 00:06:18.279 12 is the average age when women have their first period. 00:06:18.279 --> 00:06:22.639 She is just entering the physical prime as a grown woman. 00:06:23.019 --> 00:06:25.599 And she is languishing and dying. 00:06:26.579 --> 00:06:27.339 And not only that, 00:06:27.439 --> 00:06:28.899 this is Jairus' only daughter. 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:30.179 This is the baby girl. 00:06:30.379 --> 00:06:32.199 And if you're a father of a baby girl, 00:06:32.279 --> 00:06:33.659 you know exactly what I'm talking about. 00:06:33.739 --> 00:06:37.299 This is the girl that he's been doting on for his entire life. 00:06:39.099 --> 00:06:40.299 This is his darling. 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:43.279 And he's so desperate. 00:06:43.279 --> 00:06:47.219 And Jesus listens to Jairus' heartfelt plea. 00:06:47.719 --> 00:06:49.139 But as Jesus went, 00:06:49.679 --> 00:06:51.419 it says in verses 42 to 43, 00:06:51.519 --> 00:06:53.500 that the people pressed around him, 00:06:53.879 --> 00:06:57.699 and there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for 12 years. 00:06:58.279 --> 00:07:00.279 And though she had spent all her living on physicians, 00:07:00.439 --> 00:07:03.099 she could not be healed by anyone. 00:07:04.359 --> 00:07:06.159 This too is a desperate situation. 00:07:06.279 --> 00:07:09.579 This woman had been afflicted with chronic bleeding for so long. 00:07:09.579 --> 00:07:13.199 She had sought out all the remedies she could find that were available to her, 00:07:13.240 --> 00:07:14.639 but they were no help to her. 00:07:14.899 --> 00:07:18.139 And she had despaired of healing until she heard of this Jesus. 00:07:19.800 --> 00:07:22.879 And most people infer that from this story, 00:07:22.979 --> 00:07:24.240 that this woman's bleeding, 00:07:24.599 --> 00:07:27.279 it's a reference to a uterine discharge, 00:07:27.479 --> 00:07:28.439 a uterine hemorrhage, 00:07:29.319 --> 00:07:33.019 a condition that's not only embarrassing and ostracizing, 00:07:33.399 --> 00:07:34.799 but it would have also made her, 00:07:35.019 --> 00:07:36.779 in the Jewish world she was in, 00:07:36.779 --> 00:07:37.599 socially, 00:07:38.279 --> 00:07:38.519 basically, 00:07:38.579 --> 00:07:40.659 she was ceremonially unclean. 00:07:41.019 --> 00:07:42.199 She was considered unclean, 00:07:42.319 --> 00:07:46.519 so unfit for religious inclusion and social inclusion. 00:07:47.139 --> 00:07:49.319 Leviticus 15.25 says this, 00:07:49.379 --> 00:07:52.899 if a woman has a discharge of blood for many days, 00:07:53.159 --> 00:07:55.699 not at the time of her menstrual impurity, 00:07:55.839 --> 00:07:58.899 or if she has a discharge beyond the time of her impurity, 00:07:59.139 --> 00:08:00.739 all the days of the discharge, 00:08:00.739 --> 00:08:03.539 she shall continue in uncleanness. 00:08:03.540 --> 00:08:08.800 So this discharge of bodily fluids rendered people unclean, 00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:10.480 according to Old Testament rules. 00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:14.700 And it's because these blood, in particular, signified life. 00:08:15.180 --> 00:08:18.020 So the leakage of blood was a symbol, 00:08:18.140 --> 00:08:20.360 as well as of life leaving, 00:08:20.580 --> 00:08:22.560 of a picture of death, really. 00:08:23.080 --> 00:08:25.120 And so this was considered unclean, 00:08:25.200 --> 00:08:26.879 and the Jews would have excluded her, 00:08:26.960 --> 00:08:29.040 and would have refused to associate with her, 00:08:29.080 --> 00:08:30.020 because touching her, 00:08:30.180 --> 00:08:31.180 or being touched by her, 00:08:31.180 --> 00:08:33.299 would have also made them unclean. 00:08:34.759 --> 00:08:36.940 And normally it just lasts a few days. 00:08:37.600 --> 00:08:41.399 But this woman has been unclean for 12 years. 00:08:42.539 --> 00:08:48.320 And people have avoided her touch and presence for 12 years. 00:08:51.539 --> 00:08:53.159 Perhaps it's due to her shame. 00:08:53.159 --> 00:08:55.039 It says in verse 44, 00:08:55.199 --> 00:08:56.980 she came up behind Jesus, 00:08:56.980 --> 00:08:59.860 and touched the fringe of his garment. 00:09:00.500 --> 00:09:03.139 And immediately her discharge of blood ceased. 00:09:03.959 --> 00:09:06.159 The woman doesn't want to create a scene. 00:09:06.659 --> 00:09:09.000 She discreetly approaches Jesus from behind, 00:09:09.079 --> 00:09:11.079 and touches just the fringe of the garment. 00:09:11.500 --> 00:09:11.719 Right? 00:09:11.759 --> 00:09:14.159 The woman doesn't even get to touch Jesus himself. 00:09:14.899 --> 00:09:16.279 She only touches his garment, 00:09:16.279 --> 00:09:19.620 and she doesn't even get to touch that much of his garment, 00:09:19.740 --> 00:09:20.919 just the fringe of it. 00:09:20.919 --> 00:09:22.579 And yet immediately it says, 00:09:22.679 --> 00:09:24.240 the discharge of blood ceased, 00:09:24.860 --> 00:09:26.699 which had not stopped for 12 years. 00:09:26.779 --> 00:09:29.939 This reveals the extent of Jesus' saving power. 00:09:31.219 --> 00:09:34.479 But Jesus doesn't let the woman get away without acknowledgement. 00:09:35.740 --> 00:09:37.339 He asks in verse 45, 00:09:37.539 --> 00:09:39.039 Who was it that touched me? 00:09:40.319 --> 00:09:41.299 When all denied it, 00:09:41.360 --> 00:09:41.939 Peter said, 00:09:41.939 --> 00:09:42.579 Master, 00:09:43.259 --> 00:09:45.839 the crowds surround you, 00:09:46.459 --> 00:09:47.799 and are pressing in on you. 00:09:47.799 --> 00:09:51.779 So Jesus' question is kind of puzzling. 00:09:51.939 --> 00:09:53.579 It's even humorous to a degree. 00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:55.319 Because the word press, 00:09:55.500 --> 00:09:57.599 used earlier in verse 42, 00:09:58.199 --> 00:09:59.839 it's the same word that was described, 00:10:00.559 --> 00:10:03.279 that was used to describe in the parable of the seeds earlier. 00:10:03.740 --> 00:10:07.599 The thorns that choke the seed of the gospel in the plant, 00:10:07.740 --> 00:10:08.659 so that it doesn't grow. 00:10:08.659 --> 00:10:09.179 So literally, 00:10:09.339 --> 00:10:10.259 he's being choked. 00:10:10.379 --> 00:10:12.319 He's being crushed by the crowd. 00:10:12.399 --> 00:10:14.639 They're literally pressing him all around them. 00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:16.720 And yet Jesus stops and asks, 00:10:16.919 --> 00:10:18.340 Who was it that touched me? 00:10:19.659 --> 00:10:21.819 And if Jesus' question is puzzling, 00:10:21.899 --> 00:10:25.179 the crowd's response is downright ridiculous. 00:10:26.179 --> 00:10:27.519 They all denied it. 00:10:29.279 --> 00:10:30.100 Here they are. 00:10:30.159 --> 00:10:32.759 They were instinct to avoid getting into trouble. 00:10:43.560 --> 00:10:44.539 You just lie right away. 00:10:44.600 --> 00:10:45.299 I didn't do it. 00:10:45.600 --> 00:10:46.220 It wasn't me. 00:10:46.620 --> 00:10:47.440 They deny it, 00:10:47.480 --> 00:10:50.960 even though they don't quite know what Jesus is talking about. 00:10:51.519 --> 00:10:52.759 And maybe Jesus is, 00:10:52.899 --> 00:10:54.820 because Jesus is stopping to ask the question, 00:10:55.179 --> 00:10:57.340 they assume that what Jesus is talking about 00:10:57.340 --> 00:10:59.879 is something more significant than just the physical touch. 00:11:01.080 --> 00:11:02.720 So they say they deny it. 00:11:02.919 --> 00:11:04.480 And Peter kind of reads this, 00:11:04.960 --> 00:11:06.340 the absurdity of the scene. 00:11:06.340 --> 00:11:07.320 And then he says to Jesus, 00:11:07.759 --> 00:11:08.100 Master, 00:11:08.420 --> 00:11:10.440 the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you. 00:11:10.460 --> are told that this woman touched Jesus. 00:11:48.519 --> 00:11:49.639 Who touched me? 00:11:49.979 --> 00:11:51.079 She touched Jesus. 00:11:51.179 --> 00:11:52.259 Touched the fringe of his garment. 00:11:52.639 --> 00:11:53.579 Since many were touching, 00:11:53.659 --> 00:11:57.939 it's clear that touching Jesus in and of itself does not confer healing. 00:11:57.940 --> 00:12:05.740 Jesus was not this magical being that just walked around and while just radiating this healing power. 00:12:05.820 --> 00:12:07.360 So if you just get near him or touch him close, 00:12:07.400 --> 00:12:07.780 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:49.879 when Jesus asks that question, 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:50.500 who touched me, 00:12:50.519 --> 00:12:52.840 there's only one person in the crowd that knows the answer. 00:12:54.279 --> 00:12:55.299 And so Jesus really, 00:12:55.560 --> 00:13:00.320 and it's given his kind of prophetic knowledge that he's revealed throughout the gospel so far, 00:13:00.460 --> that the woman's intention was to remain hidden. 00:13:31.019 --> 00:13:33.299 But when she realized that she was not hidden, 00:13:33.459 --> 00:13:34.740 she came trembling, 00:13:35.279 --> 00:13:36.319 fearful. 00:13:37.079 --> 00:13:40.939 And we don't know exactly why the woman came trembling in fear. 00:13:41.219 --> 00:13:43.919 Perhaps she feared Jesus or the crowds, 00:13:44.199 --> 00:13:45.719 judgment and condemnation. 00:13:45.719 --> 00:13:48.899 Since she being a ceremonially unclean woman, 00:13:49.299 --> 00:13:51.299 likely made not only Jesus, 00:13:51.699 --> 00:13:55.579 but everyone in her vicinity that she had to get through to Jesus. 00:13:56.539 --> 00:13:58.099 Unclean through contact. 00:13:59.039 --> 00:14:04.240 Perhaps she felt guilty that she received healing from Jesus without his express permission. 00:14:04.740 --> 00:14:06.299 Maybe she felt like she stole something. 00:14:07.699 --> 00:14:08.259 But regardless, 00:14:08.439 --> 00:14:09.879 Jesus does not let her stay hidden. 00:14:09.879 --> 00:14:10.700 So instead, 00:14:11.360 --> 00:14:12.460 falling down before Jesus, 00:14:12.559 --> 00:14:15.419 the woman declared in the presence of all the people, 00:14:15.779 --> 00:14:18.340 why she had touched him and how she had been immediately healed. 00:14:19.139 --> 00:14:21.159 This is instructive for us. 00:14:21.200 00:14:40.039 it is not to remain hidden. 00:14:40.559 --> 00:14:44.759 You must tell of how much Jesus has done for you. 00:14:44.899 --> 00:14:47.359 Jesus said earlier in this chapter in verse 16, 00:14:47.360 --> 00:14:59.539 It's easy sometimes for us, 00:14:59.600 --> 00:15:01.580 especially in this part of the country, 00:15:01.580 --> 00:15:05.080 to hide behind the facade of courtesy and
