00:03:05.319 God said a man after my own heart. 00:03:05.479 --> 00:03:05.659 You know. 00:03:05.979 --> 00:03:07.960 Though David was a man just like me. 00:03:08.039 --> 00:03:08.979 And just like you. 00:03:09.120 --> 00:03:09.800 He was fallible. 00:03:09.800 --> 00:03:13.680 We also know some of the wrongs and some of the things that he'd done. 00:03:13.860 --> 00:03:16.439 But at the same 00:03:41.579 You know, I just want to walk through and kind of have a little bit of an observation and try and interpret it to try and understand what life was like, what it looks like. 00:03:41.580 00:04:31.319 They seem endangered species, you know? 00:04:31.419 --> 00:04:33.240 They seem lost at this moment. 00:04:33.919 --> 00:04:36.199 It is not an individual lament, right? 00:04:36.379 --> 00:04:39.699 You know, for there is no I who speaks within this, yeah? 00:04:39.779 --> 00:04:46.759 Rather, it's an expression of the sadness of the entire community, you know, for the godly anyway, 00:04:51.879 --> 00:04:59.620 You would have heard prophets, you know, like, quote as well how, like, you know, there was limits in the godly people being about. 00:05:00.980 --> 00:05:05.560 And the psalmist concerns about the destructive power of language. 00:05:05.759 --> 00:05:07.879 It reminds us of the book of James. 00:05:08.040 --> 00:05:09.579 James 3 talks about that. 00:05:09.860 --> 00:05:13.680 It warns us, particularly as Christians, you know, about the use of our words. 00:05:13.680 --> 00:05:22.079 It says in James 3, 6, you know, the tongue is also a fire, you know, a word of evil among the parts of the body. 00:05:22.620 --> 00:05:28.180 It corrupts the old person and sets on course their life on fire by hell. 00:05:28.560 --> 00:05:32.480 So the tongue is something important that we should know as Christians, you know. 00:05:32.579 --> 00:05:38.879 We speak and we want to use it in a way that we use it to bless people, not curse, you know. 00:05:38.879 --> 00:05:52.180 And unfortunately, I'd maybe just think, you know, the situation described in this psalm could seem, could seem at times familiar with some places here in London, you know, at times. 00:05:52.339 --> 00:06:03.480 For an example, according to the 2021 census, it states 40.66% of London's population identify themselves as Christians. 00:06:03.480 --> 00:06:08.740 This is a decrease from the previous census in 2011. 00:06:09.360 --> 00:06:14.280 You know, some consider Christianity a minority religion in England and Wales. 00:06:15.620 --> 00:06:23.900 And, you know, some people might consider is this is a reason why we still experience widespread injustice and inequalities. 00:06:24.680 --> 00:06:32.420 People living in awful conditions, you know, throughout the city, throughout the country, being treated inhumanely, you know, 00:06:32.420 --> 00:06:37.080 and valuing people based on their social status, even within some churches. 00:06:37.759 --> 00:06:46.800 It can seem sometime like God's people have forgotten that they are called to be sought in life in a challenging situation and life right here in London. 00:06:47.340 --> 00:06:52.160 But, you know, let's look at this psalm with our eyes and fixed on Jesus, 00:06:52.160 --> 00:06:59.420 lest we too be overwhelmed by the flattery and deceitful words that we can often hear within our society. 00:06:59.420 --> 00:07:08.040 So, within this psalm, again, there is a contrast between deceptive, twisted words of humans and the pure words of God, 00:07:08.100 --> 00:07:11.560 which we will see and we will hear. 00:07:11.780 --> 00:07:20.060 So, we see in the first verses where David, you know, he calls out to God and kind of makes the case why he calls out to God. 00:07:20.060 --> 00:07:26.560 So, you know, whether in your Bible's help or my Bible, it says save, he calls out to God, you know, 00:07:26.879 --> 00:07:30.699 save, oh Lord, for the ungodly one is gone, you know. 00:07:30.800 --> 00:07:36.360 So, the psalmist asks for, you know, the psalmist asks for help by describing the situation 00:07:36.360 --> 00:07:43.660 as the faithful or low committed people of God's covenant are no longer seen among God's people. 00:07:43.660 --> 00:07:47.840 And, the time of this lemon is not identified. 00:07:48.220 --> 00:07:52.480 We can't really, well, I can't identify, you know, when this psalm was written, you know, 00:07:52.540 --> 00:07:59.260 because, again, I know, indeed, David, you know, his monarchy at the time when he ruled and reigned, 00:07:59.540 --> 00:08:04.260 he sought to demonstrate, we could say, maybe a shadow of Christ, you know. 00:08:04.300 --> 00:08:08.280 He kind of demonstrated what it might look like to have a godly kingdom 00:08:08.279 --> 00:08:11.779 and really honour Yahweh, their God at the time. 00:08:11.939 --> 00:08:16.579 So, we do know before he was actually placed upon the throne that, you know, 00:08:16.719 --> 00:08:20.279 King Saul tried to, you know, try to kill him, you know. 00:08:20.399 --> 00:08:24.319 God put a spirit on him and he obviously became vexed and he wanted to kill him. 00:08:24.659 --> 00:08:28.979 And then he was on the run and he was on the run even up to the time when Samuel died. 00:08:29.279 --> 00:08:33.879 So, you know, maybe was it when Samuel died, he's probably in that place thinking, 00:08:34.360 --> 00:08:36.139 where are all the godly gone, you know. 00:08:36.139 --> 00:08:41.340 Or maybe even again later on when he was on the throne and his son Absalom, you know, 00:08:41.559 --> 00:08:46.319 wanted to turf him off the throne, you know, and the people had given their heart to his son Absalom. 00:08:46.620 --> 00:08:48.039 But that's only speculation. 00:08:48.500 --> 00:08:51.259 I'm only speculating because we don't know. 00:08:51.539 --> 00:08:55.720 But, you know, it's, you know, interesting to configure, to think, 00:08:55.960 --> 00:08:58.439 where was David at this time, you know. 00:08:58.620 --> 00:09:02.779 Where was he when these things were going on still, right, yeah. 00:09:02.779 --> 00:09:07.939 So, the time seemed distressed for Israel's community as God's covenant people. 00:09:08.319 --> 00:09:10.519 And we do take it God's covenant people, for him to say, 00:09:10.659 --> 00:09:12.779 save, oh Lord, the godly one is gone. 00:09:13.120 --> 00:09:18.579 So, we take it, you know, Israel was God's people where they should uphold his confidence. 00:09:18.819 --> 00:09:23.120 So, there is an expectation to see them as a godly people, 00:09:23.459 --> 00:09:25.259 just like we as the church, you know. 00:09:25.259 --> 00:09:28.419 We have a confident relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:09:28.779 --> 00:09:35.080 So, there is an expectation to see us displaying the fruits of abiding in Christ 00:09:35.080 --> 00:09:36.759 and walking in the light of the gospel. 00:09:38.059 --> 00:09:41.740 Again, just want to note that, you know, what we hear David says, 00:09:41.840 --> 00:09:46.299 it was echoed in 1 Kings 19.10 with Elijah. 00:09:46.960 --> 00:09:51.539 Remember when he ran away from Ayab and Jezebel, 00:09:51.539 --> 00:09:56.059 Elijah says that the people of Israel were forsaken your covenant. 00:09:56.199 --> 00:09:57.860 He says, I, only I am left. 00:09:58.000 --> 00:10:00.279 But God obviously had other plans. 00:10:00.399 --> 00:10:03.599 He had 7,000 prophets stored elsewhere. 00:10:04.019 --> 00:10:07.719 We see Micah in chapter 7.2 where Micah says, 00:10:07.860 --> 00:10:11.000 likewise, the godly have perished from the earth 00:10:11.000 --> 00:10:13.699 and there is no one upright among mankind. 00:10:14.579 --> 00:10:18.620 So, you know, consider his thoughts at that time, 00:10:18.759 --> 00:10:20.379 what that might have looked like. 00:10:20.379 --> 00:10:23.220 We do know, again, through the Old Testament, 00:10:23.539 --> 00:10:27.299 that, you know, Israel and then Judah, you know, that monarchy, 00:10:27.700 --> 00:10:31.860 there was times when they continually strayed from just serving Yahweh, 00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:34.720 their God, and seeking to be like the nations. 00:10:34.899 --> 00:10:40.240 And I wonder, you know, even some of us sometimes in society right here, 00:10:40.340 --> 00:10:42.460 you know, even as Christians sometimes, 00:10:42.460 --> 00:10:45.899 as we really look for that flame of the fire of the gospel 00:10:45.899 --> 00:10:49.360 to be stirred up amongst us when we look around 00:10:49.360 --> 00:10:52.579 and we look to see how we can get sharpened 00:10:52.579 --> 00:10:56.759 and look to see brothers and sisters who are really passionate for the Lord, 00:10:56.919 --> 00:10:59.439 that, you know, we're not just coming to church, 00:10:59.459 --> 00:11:03.919 but we're actually living out our Christian walk and our vocation. 00:11:03.919 --> 00:11:07.919 And, you know, it is easily, in my mind, 00:11:08.199 --> 00:11:12.500 to consider sometime, you know, where I may feel zealous for the Lord. 00:11:12.839 --> 00:11:17.240 You know, I may look around and, you know, my mind may deceive me, 00:11:17.339 --> 00:11:20.579 but, you know, it might be hard at times in various other places 00:11:20.579 --> 00:11:24.120 to consider where are those passionate ones for God. 00:11:24.339 --> 00:11:27.779 It may seem likewise that they too have vanished. 00:11:27.779 --> 00:11:33.159 But clearly, David was in a place where, you know, it was utterly, you know, 00:11:33.779 --> 00:11:36.620 yeah, they say they're devastating. 00:11:37.100 --> 00:11:39.639 So, you know, with that, he calls out to the Lord. 00:11:39.779 --> 00:11:42.779 So we see the problem, what that is, hearts, they speak with a double heart, 00:13:04.219 --> 00:13:06.179 meaning somebody would speak to you, 00:13:06.299 --> 00:13:09.399 but their intention is not what they're presenting to you 00:13:09.399 --> 00:13:12.439 at that instant and that moment when they speak to you. 00:13:12.759 --> 00:13:16.819 They may communicate to you something that seems sincere, 00:13:16.819 --> 00:13:19.480 it's all for you or there for you, 00:13:19.480 --> 00:13:21.539 but maybe when they walk away, 00:13:21.840 --> 00:13:24.259 their intentions are something completely different, I can have conversations with friends, 00:13:48.419 --> 00:13:51.279 and it seems pretty simple that we may figure 00:13:51.279 --> 00:13:54.459 the solution would be X, Y, Z, you know. 00:13:54.759 --> 00:13:58.559 We just implement simple things to support the people 00:13:58.559 --> 00:14:01.579 or try and put something in place to solve the problems. 00:14:01.879 --> 00:14:03.539 So it's that kind of picture, you know, 00:14:03.639 --> 00:14:06.059 speaking things to win people over, 00:14:06.559 --> 00:14:09.139 complimenting people and saying things 00:14:09.139 --> 00:14:10.740 what --> 00:14:40.399 to help us to have the right focus, 00:14:40.779 --> 00:14:42.799 to know that we're on the right trajectory, 00:14:42.799 --> 00:14:46.079 and the right trajectory is always keeping
