purpose is to identify any weaknesses so that we can take corrective action and strengthen the church. 00:05:15.019 --> 00:05:36.599 Because once we know where the cracks appear, we can firm up the foundations and we can be strong together as we live in this world. 00:05:36.600 --> 00:05:48.040 You see, we might make our assessment, but the only one qualified to make an assessment is the Lord Jesus. 00:05:48.879 --> 00:05:50.060 Look at verse 1. 00:05:52.060 --> 00:05:57.200 To the angel of the church in Laodicea write, these are the words of the Amen. 00:05:58.740 --> 00:06:01.600 Jesus is the Amen. 00:06:02.720 --> 00:06:06.439 Now, Amen isn't just a word that you attach at the end of your prayers. 00:06:06.600 --> 00:06:07.960 To indicate you're finished. 00:06:09.200 --> deeds. 00:08:41.379 --> 00:08:42.679 And then list them out. 00:08:42.779 --> 00:08:43.939 I know your hard work. 00:08:44.079 --> 00:08:46.179 And how you didn't renounce your faith. 00:08:46.319 --> 00:08:48.779 And how you persevered in service. 00:08:49.079 --> 00:08:51.559 And how you served wonderful cups of tea. 00:08:51.699 --> 00:08:52.860 And had the best biscuits. 00:08:53.179 --> 00:09:37.419 That's not what I said. 00:09:37.419 --> 00:09:41.379 But this isn't about naming and shaming. 00:09:41.379 --> 00:09:45.419 This isn't about piling on the guilt and bashing you on the head. 00:09:45.759 --> 00:09:47.339 No, look at verse 19. 00:09:48.299 --> 00:09:53.299 Those whom I love, I rebuke and discipline. 00:09:53.299 --> 00:09:58.500 Jesus' rebuke is evidence of his love. 00:09:59.279 --> 00:10:00.339 He loves his church. 00:10:00.459 --> 00:10:03.019 He cares deeply for his church. 00:10:03.019 --> 00:10:11.679 A parent who doesn't discipline or rebuke their son or daughter doesn't care about their welfare. 00:10:13.039 --> 00:10:18.419 But a parent who does correct loves their child. 00:10:19.279 --> 00:10:22.139 They want the best for them to grow in maturity. 00:10:22.659 --> 00:10:27.019 How much more then does Jesus, who died for us, love us? 00:10:27.019 --> 00:10:33.299 His rebuke is evidence that we are deeply treasured by him. 00:10:34.980 --> 00:10:43.600 He exposes our weaknesses so that we can take corrective action and strengthen the church. 00:10:45.360 --> 00:10:49.120 So what is his loving rebuke? 00:10:50.000 --> 00:10:52.139 Well, it comes in three parts. 00:10:53.439 --> 00:10:54.539 Here's the first part. 00:10:54.539 --> 00:10:58.139 First, he says, you are lukewarm. 00:10:58.899 --> 00:11:03.179 Verse 15, I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. 00:11:03.899 --> 00:11:07.379 I wish you were either one or the other. 00:11:09.699 --> 00:11:16.039 And one of the things I enjoyed on holiday was the lovely hot weather. 00:11:18.019 --> 00:11:18.959 Blistering hot. 00:11:18.960 --> 00:11:24.200 And opening up your bottle when you're really thirsty and taking in a drink. 00:11:25.340 --> 00:11:30.160 Oh, there's nothing worse than a bottle that's been sitting in the sun. 00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:31.879 It's disgusting. 00:11:32.860 --> 00:11:36.139 Give me a cold drink or a hot drink. 00:11:36.379 --> 00:12:32.340 It might be true of the church in Laodicea, but I mean, that's not me. 00:12:33.200 --> 00:12:35.120 That's not this church, is it? 00:12:36.480 --> 00:12:38.100 Well, let's read on. 00:12:39.520 --> 00:12:46.360 Not only are we lukewarm, we are self-sufficient. 00:12:47.300 --> 00:12:47.560 Whoops. 00:12:47.559 --> 00:12:56.779 The reason why the church tastes so bad is because they live as if they're self-sufficient. 00:12:57.159 --> 00:12:58.219 Look at verse 17. 00:12:58.979 --> 00:13:05.859 You say, I'm rich, I've acquired wealth and do not need a thing. 00:13:07.479 --> 00:13:13.059 We see being self-sufficient as something to be pursued and to be prized. 00:13:13.059 --> 00:13:21.979 If you can get to the point in life where you are financially stable, that's a sign that you've made it, that you're a success. 00:13:23.239 --> 00:13:25.000 My mortgage is paid off. 00:13:25.319 --> 00:13:26.699 My pension is doing well. 00:13:27.019 --> 00:13:28.279 My savings are safe. 00:13:28.579 --> 00:13:30.539 I do not need a thing. 00:13:30.539 --> 00:13:37.719 In fact, I'm doing so well, I no longer have to ask God for anything. 00:13:38.659 --> 00:13:39.779 Isn't that what we want? 00:13:40.360 --> 00:13:44.099 I mean, why be a burden to God and have to ask him for things? 00:13:45.319 --> 00:13:53.279 In fact, maybe God has blessed us so much, rather than have any bank account and go, 00:14:51.079 --> 00:14:55.259 I like what I see there, and they've immediately translated as, 00:14:55.839 --> 00:14:58.299 I'm doing spiritually well. 00:15:00.779 --> 00:15:02.740 Now, please don't misunderstand me. 00:15:02.859 --> 00:15:04.439 Money and wealth is not wrong. 00:15:04.440 --> 00:15:09.300 It can be good to make money and use it for the blessing of others 00:15:09.300 --> 00:15:11.480 and the building up of his church. 00:15:12.280 --> 00:15:16.500 Scripture encourages us to work hard, make a living. 00:15:17.060 --> 00:15:20.040 It commands us to give and to care for the poor. 00:15:20.540 --> 00:15:23.120 In fact, the people of Carigoline Baptist Church, 00:15:23.440 --> 00:15:24.760 you know what, let me say this, 00:15:25.020 -->
