We are continuing our series in Jesus's farewell discourse in John chapters 13 00:00:13.480 --> 00:00:21.379 through 17. This is the moment in Jesus's earthly ministry in the upper room when he prepares his 00:00:21.379 --> 00:00:26.679 disciples for his impending departure by way of the cross and resurrection, but he also prepares 00:00:26.679 --> 00:00:35.039 his disciples for their upcoming mission by way of the Holy Spirit. So last week we heard Jesus speak 00:00:35.039 --> 00:00:40.200 words of comfort to the disciples and to us, that he's going to prepare a way for us, that he's the 00:00:40.200 --> 00:00:47.799 only way to the Father. So let's pick up where we left off in John chapter 14, verses 8 through 14. 00:00:48.519 --> 00:00:56.120 But before we read, let me pray for us. Let me pray. Our Father in heaven, we ask that 00:00:56.119 --> 00:01:03.979 as we come to your word this morning, you would give us ears to hear what your spirit is saying, 00:01:04.859 --> 00:01:11.900 and you would give us hearts to receive with faith what it is you have for us. 00:01:13.299 --> 00:01:18.739 God, thank you for doing a transformative work in us and through us as you speak to us. 00:01:18.739 --> 00:01:25.780 We pray this in Jesus's name. Amen. All right. John chapter 14, verses 8 through 14. 00:01:25.780 --> 00:01:34.019 Philip said to Jesus, Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us. Jesus said to him, 00:01:34.519 --> 00:01:40.560 have I been with you so long and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the 00:01:40.560 --> 00:01:47.659 Father. How can you say, show us the Father? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the 00:01:47.659 --> 00:01:53.920 Father is in me? The words that I say to you, I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who 00:01:53.920 --> 00:02:00.379 dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else 00:02:00.379 --> 00:02:07.320 believe on account of the works themselves. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me 00:02:07.320 --> 00:02:13.699 will also do the works that I do, and greater works than these will he do because I am going to the 00:02:13.699 --> 00:02:19.860 Father. You watch the movie that all your friends are raving about, and you just don't get it. You 00:02:39.920 --> 00:02:46.560 think, what am I missing here? Or you're putting together a piece of Ikea furniture, trying for the 00:02:46.560 --> 00:02:51.960 second or third time, and the thing just doesn't look right. What am I missing here? 00:02:53.920 --> 00:02:59.920 I think as followers of Jesus, we can sometimes feel similarly about our spiritual lives. 00:03:00.620 --> 00:03:04.920 We can feel like we're missing something, right? For example, Paul says in Romans, 00:03:05.620 --> 00:03:10.680 the kingdom of God is all about righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. And sometimes we think, 00:03:10.680 --> 00:03:14.300 I don't really feel any of that. What am I missing? 00:03:17.060 --> 00:03:23.659 When Philip asks Jesus in our passage, Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us, 00:03:24.659 --> 00:03:32.900 don't you hear Philip kind of feeling the same way? Jesus, what am I missing? Just show us the Father, 00:03:33.040 --> 00:03:39.540 and that'll be enough for us. Now, you have to admire Philip's desire here, right? It's like Moses in 00:03:39.539 --> 00:03:46.780 Exodus, when Moses says to the Lord, Lord, show me your glory. After all, to see God, to catch a glimpse 00:03:46.780 --> 00:03:54.419 of his brilliance and beauty, that would truly be enough for us. That would satisfy the soul for a 00:03:54.419 --> 00:03:59.879 thousand lifetimes. That would thrill even the most cynical heart to see God. 00:04:02.639 --> 00:04:08.439 But what are we missing? Why are we so often dissatisfied in our walk with God? Why are we so often 00:04:08.439 --> 00:04:16.579 bored? What are we missing? Like Philip, we ask, Lord, just show us the Father, and that'll be enough 00:04:16.579 --> 00:04:27.040 for us. And in our short passage, Jesus is going to help us connect the dots. He's going to show us 00:04:27.040 --> 00:04:34.540 that a soul-satisfying relationship with God can be had, but too often we overlook something 00:04:34.540 --> 00:04:40.280 important. Too often we're trying to build a stool with only one or two legs, and then we wonder why it 00:04:40.280 --> 00:04:46.939 can never stay up. We wonder why it always falls flat. Instead, Jesus shows us that a soul-satisfying 00:04:46.939 --> 00:04:52.720 relationship with God involves the dynamic interplay of three critical things—believing, 00:04:53.720 --> 00:05:02.060 doing, and praying. It's about a kind of believing that gives birth to doing, 00:05:02.060 --> 00:05:08.680 and a kind of doing that gives birth to praying, and a kind of praying that comes back again to 00:05:08.680 --> 00:05:17.100 believing. So let's look at each of these three and find out maybe what we've been missing. So first, 00:05:17.519 --> 00:05:23.160 a soul-satisfying relationship with God means believing. But what kind of believing? Believing 00:05:23.160 --> 00:05:30.319 that in Jesus we have all we've ever longed for. Look again at verses 9 through 11. Like Philip, 00:05:30.319 --> 00:05:36.599 we want to see the Father. We want to see God. It's almost like we're estranged lovers longing to 00:05:36.599 --> 00:05:41.800 meet our beloved again. We're like exiles longing to see our homeland. I mean, if you've ever been in 00:05:41.800 --> 00:05:46.339 a situation where you've been far from home for a long time, doesn't it feel like it would just be 00:05:46.339 --> 00:05:55.000 enough to kind of crest the hill and see home once again? To know that you are at last where you 00:05:55.000 --> 00:06:03.199 belong. And isn't so much of our life a search to find lasting satisfaction and meaning? Isn't that 00:06:03.199 --> 00:06:08.480 so much of what we long for in life? And isn't so much of our life a search for those things 00:06:08.480 --> 00:06:17.759 that often comes up short? That life isn't enough. You know, we get the degree, we get the job, 00:06:17.759 --> 00:06:21.599 we get the relationship, we buy the home, but it doesn't do the trick. 00:06:25.039 --> 00:06:26.959 Reflecting on this reality, C.S. Lewis once said, 00:06:27.039 --> 00:06:31.339 if I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, 00:06:32.039 --> 00:06:35.599 the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. 00:06:36.779 --> 00:06:41.539 If none of my earthly pleasures, he goes on to say, if none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, 00:06:41.719 --> 00:06:47.279 that does not prove the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to 00:06:47.279 --> 00:06:54.479 satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing. If that is so, he says, I must take 00:06:54.479 --> 00:06:58.699 care on the one hand never to despise or be unthankful for these earthly blessings, and on the 00:06:58.699 --> 00:07:05.399 other, never to mistake them for the something else of which they are only a copy or echo or mirage. 00:07:06.599 --> 00:07:13.579 He concludes, I must keep alive in myself the desire for my true country. 00:07:17.279 --> 00:07:20.959 And so, like Philip, we say, Lord, show us the Father, and that'll be enough for us. 00:07:22.419 --> 00:07:30.419 But now consider, consider what Philip's question implies in this moment. Philip and the other 00:07:30.419 --> 00:07:35.179 apostles, the other disciples, have been with Jesus now for three years. Philip has heard Jesus teach, 00:07:35.579 --> 00:07:41.019 seen Jesus work wonders. In chapter 13, right before this chapter, Jesus has just washed Philip's feet 00:07:41.019 --> 00:07:46.560 and served him the meal that will become the sign of the fulfillment of all of Israel's hopes of 00:07:46.560 --> 00:07:53.620 redemption. And yet, Philip still thinks that he needs something more to see the Father. 00:07:56.379 --> 00:08:01.599 But listen to what Jesus says in verse 9 to Philip, to all of us. 00:08:01.600 --> 00:08:18.200 Let that sink in. There is nothing in addition to Jesus that we need to see the Father. 00:08:19.580 --> 00:08:26.260 There's no surplus of God somewhere else that we might need to discover or find out. There's no sort 00:08:26.259 --> 00:08:33.899 of advanced course or higher degree that we might take. Soul-satisfying Christianity is not Jesus plus 00:08:33.899 --> 00:08:41.799 something else. In fact, the very reason why our faith becomes so dull is because we think we have 00:08:41.799 --> 00:08:48.519 to keep looking somewhere else. It's like we're in the dressing room and we keep trying on clothes 00:08:48.519 --> 00:08:52.299 after clothes. Maybe the next outfit will be just the right fit. Maybe the next outfit. 00:08:52.299 --> 00:09:00.240 When there's a perfectly tailored dress waiting for us right there. There it is. Put it on. 00:09:04.019 --> 00:09:09.339 But how can that be? How is it that Jesus alone is enough? 00:09:11.479 --> 00:09:13.599 Look at the next verse, verse 10. Jesus says, 00:09:14.279 --> 00:09:18.359 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? 00:09:18.360 --> 00:09:26.820 Now this is what we've come to call the mutual indwelling of God the Father and God the Son. 00:09:26.899 --> 00:09:34.899 The Father is in the Son. The Son is in the Father. You see, Jesus isn't merely a prophet or a religious 00:09:34.899 --> 00:09:43.820 leader who comes with a word from God. No, Jesus is the very word of God. When God the Father speaks, 00:09:43.820 --> 00:09:51.120 the very word he says is Jesus, the Son. So to think that we can find more of God somewhere else 00:09:51.120 --> 00:09:52.720 is impossible. 00:09:55.340 --> 00:09:59.740 Imagine you visit a friend you haven't seen for ages. You fly across the country to visit them. 00:09:59.900 --> 00:10:03.520 You show up at their door. They open the door and then the friend says, 00:10:04.160 --> 00:10:08.560 Well, it's great that you're here and all, but you know, I'm going to head down to the library 00:10:08.559 --> 00:10:13.619 and see if anyone has written any biographies about you. Maybe search the internet and see 00:10:13.619 --> 00:10:18.039 what I can find. I'm so eager to get to know you better after all these years that we've been apart. 00:10:19.479 --> 00:10:20.500 And you think to yourself, 00:10:21.939 --> 00:10:26.019 I'm here. I'm right in front of you. I'm in the flesh. It doesn't get better than this. 00:10:26.159 --> 00:10:29.139 It's impossible to find more of me somewhere else. 00:10:29.139 --> 00:10:33.360 And that's what Jesus is saying to each one of us. 00:10:33.840 --> 00:10:35.580 I'm standing right in front of you. 00:10:36.759 --> 00:10:40.240 God in the flesh. It doesn't get better. It doesn't get more personal. 00:10:40.580 --> 00:10:42.819 It doesn't get more self-revealing than this. 00:10:46.939 --> 00:10:49.879 But why should we believe that the Father is in Jesus, the Son, 00:10:50.480 --> 00:10:51.980 and Jesus, the Son, is in the Father? 00:10:51.980 --> 00:10:53.200 Look at verse 11. 00:10:53.200 --> 00:10:59.540 Believe me, Jesus says, or else believe on account of the works. 00:11:00.560 --> 00:11:05.120 In other words, we can either take Jesus' own word for it, 00:11:05.120 --> 00:11:09.000 or we can believe because of the powerful works that Jesus has done. 00:11:09.200 --> 00:11:11.879 So on the one hand, we can take Jesus' own word for it. 00:11:11.940 --> 00:11:14.400 And consider, that is no light thing. 00:11:16.780 --> 00:11:18.800 Did anyone ever teach like Jesus? 00:11:18.799 --> 00:11:23.959 Did anyone leave a greater impact on human history? 00:11:25.039 --> 00:11:28.839 You know, many people will say that they revere Jesus as a great teacher 00:11:28.839 --> 00:11:30.219 or a great spiritual guide. 00:11:31.019 --> 00:11:33.419 Some will even say perhaps he was the greatest teacher, 00:11:33.500 --> 00:11:35.279 the greatest spiritual guide who ever lived. 00:11:37.559 --> 00:11:39.279 Well, friends, if you believe that, 00:11:39.339 --> 00:11:42.120 or if you're at least willing to entertain that thought, 00:11:43.079 --> 00:11:47.399 then consider what Jesus says about his own relationship to the Father. 00:11:47.399 --> 00:11:51.559 If you believe that he's a great teacher, and he is, 00:11:51.879 --> 00:11:56.539 then believe what he actually says about himself, perhaps. 00:11:59.659 --> 00:12:02.620 But on the other hand, you can believe on account of what Jesus has done. 00:12:03.319 --> 00:12:06.500 During Jesus' lifetime, we have records of people saying things like this, 00:12:07.079 --> 00:12:09.919 when the Messiah comes, will he do more works than these? 00:12:10.579 --> 00:12:13.199 Nearly every historical record we have of the life of Jesus 00:12:13.199 --> 00:12:15.879 presents him as a worker of mighty signs and wonders. 00:12:15.879 --> 00:12:19.779 In John's gospel, we find Jesus doing things like turning water into wine 00:12:19.779 --> 00:12:23.259 or feeding 5,000 people with just a few fish and loaves of bread, 00:12:23.439 --> 00:12:25.439 even raising the dead back to life. 00:12:26.019 --> 00:12:30.059 All of these works are meant to tell us something about who Jesus is, 00:12:30.179 --> 00:12:31.279 about his identity. 00:12:32.059 --> 00:12:35.879 They are nonverbal, Christological signposts. 00:12:36.600 --> 00:12:39.620 In other words, they're Jesus showing us who he is, 00:12:39.799 --> 00:12:41.100 not merely telling us. 00:12:41.100 --> 00:12:45.159 But as we think about the works of Jesus, 00:12:45.279 --> 00:12:46.740 think about the greatest work of all. 00:12:49.480 --> 00:12:52.019 Consider that the one who turned water into wine 00:12:52.019 --> 00:12:56.960 and fed the multitudes and calmed the seas and raised the dead, 00:12:57.379 --> 00:12:59.720 consider that at the end of his life, 00:13:00.460 --> 00:13:04.180 he was willing to stand in the place of his enemies 00:13:04.179 --> 00:13:07.799 and to be stripped of all his dignity and honor 00:13:07.799 --> 00:13:09.579 and to be crucified 00:13:09.579 --> 00:13:12.379 and to go down into death itself. 00:13:14.179 --> 00:13:15.559 Consider that he was willing 00:13:15.559 --> 00:13:19.039 to give his life as a ransom for many, 00:13:19.479 --> 00:13:21.979 to pay the infinite debt of sin 00:13:21.979 --> 00:13:24.559 that we owed to an infinitely holy God 00:13:24.559 --> 00:13:28.479 with the infinitely priceless blood of his own perfect life. 00:13:28.480 --> 00:13:33.860 Has anyone ever done a work like that? 00:13:35.480 --> 00:13:39.580 Died for our sins willingly, lovingly? 00:13:44.379 --> 00:13:46.500 And so, friends, as we apply this to our own hearts, 00:13:46.560 --> 00:13:49.500 we have to ask, we have to ask ourselves, 00:13:49.940 --> 00:13:54.840 where do I tend to look to find ultimate spiritual answers? 00:13:54.840 --> 00:14:01.660 Where do I tend to go to find ultimate spiritual satisfaction for my soul 00:14:01.660 --> 00:14:04.580 other than Jesus, 00:14:05.540 --> 00:14:08.320 other than the crucified and risen Lord? 00:14:10.740 --> 00:14:14.879 If we are trying to see the face of the Father, 00:14:14.980 --> 00:14:17.560 of our Creator, of the one who made us and loves us, 00:14:18.500 --> 00:14:22.160 Jesus says we have to look into the face of the Son, 00:14:23.259 --> 00:14:24.420 of his own self. 00:14:25.759 --> 00:14:27.340 In other words, our pursuit of God 00:14:27.340 --> 00:14:31.340 must be ruthlessly, radically Christ-centered, 00:14:31.519 --> 00:14:34.560 or it will leave us empty, tired, and bored. 00:14:37.700 --> 00:14:39.460 So first, what Jesus says then is 00:14:39.460 --> 00:14:43.220 soul-satisfying Christianity means believing, 00:14:43.560 --> 00:14:46.540 believing that in Jesus we have all we've ever longed for. 00:14:49.639 --> 00:14:51.360 But let's pause a minute and ask, 00:14:51.360 --> 00:14:52.720 let me ask you, Christian, 00:14:52.980 --> 00:14:54.800 is that your experience? 00:14:54.840 --> 00:14:59.340 Having seen the Father in the face of Jesus, 00:14:59.600 --> 00:15:01.340 are you satisfied? 00:15:05.120 --> 00:15:07.259 Most of us, I think at times, 00:15:07.320 --> 00:15:08.800 have to honestly answer, 00:15:09.800 --> 00:15:10.139 no. 00:15:11.759 --> 00:15:13.399 We know Jesus is all in all, 00:15:13.480 --> 00:15:15.460 but why doesn't it feel like it's enough? 00:15:15.460 --> 00:15:22.300 Well, it could be that we aren't really pressing into the person of Jesus 00:15:22.300 --> 00:15:23.220 through the means of grace, 00:15:23.320 --> 00:15:25.259 through spiritual rhythms like Christ-centered prayer, 00:15:25.400 --> 00:15:27.420 or scripture meditation, or worship, and so on. 00:15:28.920 --> 00:15:32.139 Or perhaps it doesn't feel like enough because we're just feeling the reality 00:15:32.139 --> 00:15:34.519 that our consummation is still to come. 00:15:34.519 --> 00:15:38.419 You know, John says in his first epistle that the day is coming when we shall be like him, 00:15:38.480 --> 00:15:39.980 for we shall see him as he is. 00:15:40.179 --> 00:15:43.439 We are still awaiting the bridegroom's return for his bride. 00:15:44.579 --> 00:15:52.059 But still, there's another very important reason why Jesus can sometimes feel like he's not enough. 00:15:52.059 --> 00:15:57.099 And this, perhaps, is more widespread among us than we realize. 00:15:59.919 --> 00:16:05.659 And it comes from a faulty understanding of what the Christian life actually means. 00:16:05.659 --> 00:16:14.379 We operate with a truncated vision of what God actually has for us in this life. 00:16:14.659 --> 00:16:16.459 You see, the Christian story is not 00:16:16.459 --> 00:16:19.179 believe in Jesus and then wait around 00:16:19.179 --> 00:16:21.379 until you go to heaven when you die. 00:16:24.319 --> 00:16:25.399 Now, don't get me wrong. 00:16:25.860 --> 00:16:27.740 The hope of heaven is precious and sweet. 00:16:28.259 --> 00:16:29.399 It is food when we are hungry. 00:16:29.639 --> 00:16:30.980 It is drink when we are weary. 00:16:31.199 --> 00:16:32.299 It is joy in our sadness. 00:16:32.559 --> 00:16:33.939 It is courage in our weakness. 00:16:33.940 --> 00:16:38.020 But, as we set our sights on the new heavens and the new earth to come, 00:16:38.160 --> 00:16:40.220 right now, there is a mission. 00:16:40.400 --> 00:16:43.820 There is a purpose, a calling that Jesus has for us. 00:16:48.400 --> 00:16:52.400 Consider, when Jesus was here, he healed the sick. 00:16:52.900 --> 00:16:53.900 He blessed the poor. 00:16:54.440 --> 00:16:55.800 He do? 00:17:05.519 --> 00:17:06.460 He healed the sick. 00:17:06.759 --> 00:17:07.679 He blessed the poor. 00:17:08.139 --> 00:17:09.740 He challenged empty religion. 00:17:10.059 --> 00:17:10.940 He calmed seas. 00:17:11.059 --> 00:17:11.879 He raised the dead. 00:17:12.079 --> 00:17:13.779 Now, why was he doing all of that? 00:17:15.399 --> 00:17:16.940 On the one hand, as we just said, 00:17:17.000 --> 00:17:20.899 the miracles of Christ were demonstrations of his identity. 00:17:21.119 --> 00:17:21.339 Yes. 00:17:21.480 --> 00:17:23.359 But they were also something more. 00:17:23.359 --> 00:17:29.819 The works that Christ did, they were creation healing works. 00:17:30.539 --> 00:17:36.059 What I mean is the miracles of Christ were not merely displays of power or wonder. 00:17:36.479 --> 00:17:42.500 They were things that put creation back into the wholeness that God intended. 00:17:42.500 --> 00:17:47.720 So, I took my car to the shop this past week. 00:17:48.799 --> 00:17:51.680 Now, imagine I had taken my car to the shop, 00:17:52.079 --> 00:17:57.420 and the mechanic somehow magically turned my Honda CR-V into an apple pie. 00:17:59.279 --> 00:18:03.440 That would have been quite a display of wonder and power. 00:18:04.279 --> 00:18:07.119 But it would have been a little pointless, right? 00:18:07.799 --> 00:18:09.400 Tasty, but pointless. 00:18:09.400 --> 00:18:14.980 But if the mechanic actually fixed the car, 00:18:15.780 --> 00:18:17.759 when no one else could fix it, 00:18:18.400 --> 00:18:21.600 if he restored it to its proper and intended use, 00:18:22.840 --> 00:18:24.759 isn't that much more important? 00:18:25.420 --> 00:18:27.040 And isn't that much more satisfying? 00:18:29.140 --> 00:18:35.380 You see, the miracles of Christ are signs that the creator has come back into his creation 00:18:35.380 --> 00:18:36.860 to make things right. 00:18:36.859 --> 00:18:39.759 Jesus turned water into wine 00:18:39.759 --> 00:18:42.039 because God originally created us, 00:18:42.240 --> 00:18:44.019 not for sorrow, but for joy. 00:18:46.179 --> 00:18:48.139 Jesus fed the 5,000 00:18:48.139 --> 00:18:50.279 because God originally intended us 00:18:50.279 --> 00:18:52.539 to flourish and enjoy his good gifts 00:18:52.539 --> 00:18:54.139 and not to be hungry and starve. 00:18:55.979 --> 00:18:58.159 Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead 00:18:58.159 --> 00:19:00.519 because we were made not for death, 00:19:00.599 --> 00:19:01.459 but for life. 00:19:01.460 --> 00:19:07.880 In short, Jesus came to inaugurate the kingdom of God, 00:19:08.579 --> 00:19:12.660 the world-healing reign of the creator 00:19:12.660 --> 00:19:17.960 to drive back death and sin and hell from God's good creation 00:19:17.960 --> 00:19:21.799 and to begin the work of restoration, of new creation. 00:19:21.799 --> 00:19:25.480 And here is what we so often miss. 00:19:26.700 --> 00:19:29.759 Here's why our walk with God doesn't satisfy the soul. 00:19:30.259 --> 00:19:33.200 Too often we miss the fact that believing, 00:19:34.539 --> 00:19:37.200 being united to the person of Christ, 00:19:38.200 --> 00:19:42.319 too often we miss that being united to the person of Christ 00:19:42.319 --> 00:19:45.779 means being united to the mission of Christ. 00:19:45.779 --> 00:19:49.940 Let's read verse 12. 00:19:50.059 --> 00:19:50.680 Jesus says, 00:19:50.680 --> 00:19:52.779 Truly, truly, I say to you, 00:19:53.319 --> 00:19:54.700 whoever believes in me 00:19:54.700 --> 00:19:57.619 will also do the works that I do 00:19:57.619 --> 00:20:00.000 and greater works than these will he do 00:20:00.000 --> 00:20:01.639 because I'm going to the Father. 00:20:03.420 --> 00:20:05.319 Soul-satisfying
