here every Sunday morning is arguably the most important thing 00:00:22.140 --> 00:00:25.039 that we do together as a church. 00:00:25.039 --> 00:00:32.379 And I'll say more about why this is later, because our passage this morning is actually 00:00:32.379 --> 00:00:34.420 going to speak to this. 00:00:35.399 --> 00:00:41.799 We're once again picking up the words of the Apostle Paul to Timothy, Paul's second letter 00:00:41.799 --> 00:00:46.640 to Timothy, and quite likely one of Paul's last letters written. 00:00:47.539 --> 00:00:54.679 If you remember from earlier this year, Paul at the time of this writing is in prison, and 00:00:54.679 --> 00:00:55.979 he is very near the end. 00:00:57.259 --> 00:01:00.859 History has it that not long after this, he was executed in Rome. 00:01:02.219 --> 00:01:05.780 And so these are like Paul's last words. 00:01:07.000 --> 00:01:08.200 And you can hear it. 00:01:08.819 --> 00:01:11.519 You can feel it, even as you read through this letter. 00:01:12.560 --> 00:01:16.439 These are the words of a man who knows his days are numbered. 00:01:16.439 --> 00:01:26.640 And he's writing to encourage and instruct the younger man, Timothy, who is right now serving 00:01:26.640 --> 00:01:30.200 as a leader in and around the church of Ephesus. 00:01:31.200 --> 00:01:35.700 Now I'm not going to recap the whole letter for us this morning, but I would encourage you 00:01:35.700 --> 00:01:37.560 to have a read through it again this week. 00:01:37.560 --> 00:01:46.840 My last message back in June was on chapter 3, verses 10 to 15, and so I'm going to read 00:01:46.840 --> 00:01:54.820 verses 10 to 17 for us this morning. 00:01:54.960 --> 00:01:58.859 And then we'll continue on from verse 15 to the end of the chapter. 00:01:58.859 --> 00:02:07.539 So 2 Timothy chapter 3, we're picking it up in verse 10. 00:02:08.139 --> 00:02:18.219 You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, 00:02:19.159 --> 00:02:24.699 love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings. 00:02:24.699 --> 00:02:32.280 What kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra, the persecutions I endured, 00:02:33.039 --> 00:02:36.219 yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. 00:02:37.219 --> 00:02:44.859 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while 00:02:44.859 --> 00:02:53.479 evildoers and imposters will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 00:02:54.699 --> 00:03:03.319 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know 00:03:03.319 --> 00:03:09.119 those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy scriptures, 00:03:09.899 --> 00:03:17.579 which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 00:03:17.580 --> 00:03:32.120 All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training 00:03:32.120 --> 00:03:39.920 in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 00:03:39.919 --> 00:03:52.060 So the first thing we hear Paul do is to encourage Timothy with the example of his own life. 00:03:52.199 --> 00:03:53.279 You know my teaching. 00:03:53.919 --> 00:03:55.379 You know my life. 00:03:55.560 --> 00:03:57.079 You know my purpose, and so on. 00:03:57.919 --> 00:03:59.759 His main point here is something like, 00:03:59.819 --> 00:04:01.139 Timothy, you can trust me. 00:04:01.139 --> 00:04:05.899 Unlike the evildoers and imposters of our day, you know me. 00:04:06.179 --> 00:04:08.179 You know I am the real deal. 00:04:08.719 --> 00:04:11.699 You know that my life and my teaching match. 00:04:15.199 --> 00:04:18.979 And then here he points out another trustworthy source for Timothy. 00:04:18.980 --> 00:04:26.580 In contrast to the religious imposters and pretenders of Timothy's day who cannot be trusted, there 00:04:26.580 --> 00:04:34.600 is a source of truth that can be relied on, which can be trusted, and it is the holy scriptures. 00:04:36.540 --> 00:04:41.300 This is what Paul is referring to when he says, 00:04:41.300 --> 00:04:46.400 Continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of. 00:04:46.860 --> 00:04:49.620 What you have known from childhood. 00:04:50.699 --> 00:04:52.199 The holy scriptures. 00:04:53.340 --> 00:04:57.060 And it's worth mentioning here, Paul mentions it. 00:04:57.660 --> 00:05:01.439 How did Timothy learn the truth that is in the holy scriptures? 00:05:04.620 --> 00:05:05.660 He says, 00:05:05.840 --> 00:05:08.639 Because you know those from whom you learned it, 00:05:08.639 --> 00:05:12.839 and how from infancy you have known the holy scriptures. 00:05:13.180 --> 00:05:15.639 Who did Timothy learn the holy scriptures from, 00:05:16.479 --> 00:05:18.180 from the time that he was a little child? 00:05:20.759 --> 00:05:24.039 The answer is in chapter 1, verse 5, 00:05:24.300 --> 00:05:26.939 right at the beginning of the letter. 00:05:29.779 --> 00:05:30.639 It says there, 00:05:30.699 --> 00:05:32.979 I am reminded of your sincere faith, Timothy, 00:05:33.120 --> 00:05:35.560 which first lived in your grandmother, Lois, 00:05:36.079 --> 00:05:37.620 and in your mother, Eunice, 00:05:37.620 --> 00:05:43.100 and I am persuaded now lives in you also. 00:05:43.780 --> 00:05:48.040 So Timothy learned and became convinced of the truth in the holy scriptures 00:05:48.040 --> 00:05:55.060 because his grandmother and his mother taught them to him. 00:05:55.660 --> 00:05:58.340 They had sincere faith in God, 00:05:58.420 --> 00:06:00.280 and so they did what God commanded, 00:06:00.420 --> 00:06:03.519 and they taught the holy scriptures to Timothy. 00:06:03.519 --> 00:06:08.139 This is to be further confirmation to Timothy. 00:06:09.680 --> 00:06:13.479 Because you know those from whom you learned it. 00:06:13.560 --> 00:06:15.539 Again, it's not just Paul, 00:06:15.699 --> 00:06:18.299 who has been a godly example worth following, 00:06:18.439 --> 00:06:19.680 but look at your own mother, 00:06:20.259 --> 00:06:21.620 and your grandmother, Timothy. 00:06:21.620 --> 00:06:23.720 They too are the real deal. 00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:28.680 And you can trust what they taught you since you were a child, 00:06:28.780 --> 00:06:31.740 because look at how their lives match their message. 00:06:33.240 --> 00:06:36.800 Unlike with these imposters we are seeing around us. 00:06:38.100 --> 00:06:39.280 Do you hear this? 00:06:39.279 --> 00:06:48.639 The life of Timothy's mom and his grandma have become like anchors for Timothy 00:06:48.639 --> 00:06:52.439 in the storm that he now finds himself in. 00:06:53.719 --> 00:06:56.019 Many are turning away from Paul. 00:06:57.019 --> 00:07:00.099 Imposters and false teachers are arising. 00:07:00.100 --> 00:07:10.379 But Paul tells Timothy to look at the example of faith in his mother and grandmother 00:07:10.379 --> 00:07:16.000 and be reminded that the holy scriptures that they taught him are true. 00:07:17.360 --> 00:07:20.760 Now, I know this is a tangent that I'm about to go on, 00:07:20.840 --> 00:07:22.800 but it is worth mentioning here. 00:07:22.800 --> 00:07:30.060 Are parents responsible to teach their children the holy scriptures? 00:07:31.319 --> 00:07:38.100 Are parents responsible to teach their children the truth about God? 00:07:39.160 --> 00:07:44.460 Are they responsible to exhort them to have faith in God and to follow God? 00:07:46.340 --> 00:07:50.680 Two passages have been on my mind in the past several weeks. 00:07:50.680 --> 00:07:58.879 First, there is what God said to the Israelites long ago in the Old Testament law. 00:07:59.019 --> 00:08:01.079 Deuteronomy 6, verse 4. 00:08:02.199 --> 00:08:07.699 Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 00:08:08.939 --> 00:08:15.340 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 00:08:16.280 --> 00:08:19.579 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts, 00:08:19.579 --> 00:08:22.579 impress them on your children. 00:08:23.680 --> 00:08:28.139 Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, 00:08:28.800 --> 00:08:31.740 when you lie down and when you get up. 00:08:33.439 --> 00:08:38.759 So God commanded the Israelites long ago to teach their children his commands. 00:08:39.199 --> 00:08:43.500 And not just once a week, but all throughout the course of the day 00:08:43.500 --> 00:08:47.100 and throughout the various activities of the day. 00:08:47.100 --> 00:08:51.820 Back in the Old Testament, that's what God commanded. 00:08:53.820 --> 00:08:55.779 And then as we look to the New Testament, 00:08:56.560 --> 00:09:00.860 this is what Paul himself wrote about this to the church at Ephesus. 00:09:01.320 --> 00:09:03.480 I'm reading from Ephesians chapter 6. 00:09:04.560 --> 00:09:05.139 He writes there, 00:09:05.139 --> 00:09:09.439 The first commandment�ist, 00:09:09.440 --> 00:09:12.580 honor your father and mother, 00:09:12.660 --> 00:09:14.860 which is the first commandment with a promise, 00:09:15.260 --> 00:09:18.160 so that it may go well with you 00:09:18.160 --> 00:09:23.040 and that you may enjoy long life on the earth. 00:09:24.780 --> 00:09:29.060 Fathers, do not exasperate your children. 00:09:30.520 --> 00:09:34.240 Instead, bring them up in the training 00:09:34.240 --> 00:09:37.220 and the instruction of the Lord. 00:09:37.220 --> 00:09:41.340 Now, it's easy for us who are fathers 00:09:41.340 --> 00:09:44.100 to get focused in on that word, exasperate, 00:09:44.320 --> 00:09:47.200 and we get thinking about our interactions with our children. 00:09:48.540 --> 00:09:50.779 And have I been patient with them? 00:09:51.980 --> 00:09:54.420 Have I been given to anger with them? 00:09:55.700 --> 00:09:58.120 Have I been putting on them a load of expectation 00:09:58.120 --> 00:10:01.759 that even I couldn't carry when I was his age? 00:10:04.060 --> 00:10:06.320 And these are great questions to ask. 00:10:07.220 --> 00:10:08.960 For us who are fathers. 00:10:09.899 --> 00:10:12.639 But let's not miss the rest of the verse here. 00:10:13.139 --> 00:10:14.800 That's what we should not do. 00:11:26.519 --> 00:11:27.939 bringing your children to church 00:11:27.939 --> 00:11:29.079 and to alive 00:11:29.079 --> 00:11:29.879 and to youth group. 00:11:30.059 --> 00:11:32.240 But the bulk
