some of us here are remembering those that are loved ones that have passed away. 00:03:29.180 --> 00:03:32.860 And so Christmas is this dichotomy in our hearts. 00:03:32.980 --> 00:03:34.920 We feel the joy and the wonder of it. 00:03:35.060 --> 00:03:39.480 But also we remind it at times like this of the broken world in which we live. 00:03:40.099 --> 00:03:41.540 The pain in which we live. 00:04:06.439 Because Christmas reminds us that in the midst of all the chaos, in the midst of all the tears, in the midst of all the pain and the brokenness of our world, God has not forgotten us. 00:04:40.939 Why did Jesus come? 00:04:41.579 --> 00:04:43.079 Why did Jesus come? 00:04:43.579 --> 00:04:49.100 That Jesus Christ came into history 2,000 years ago, came into Israel, that's a fact of history. 00:04:49.600 --> 00:04:51.139 But why Jesus came? 00:04:51.259 --> 00:04:52.120 That's Christianity. 00:04:52.120 --> 00:04:55.000 And so we've been thinking and asking this question, 00:04:55.139 --> 00:04:56.939 Why is it that Jesus came? 00:04:57.420 --> 00:05:02.480 And the passage that Maddie and Avery read to us this morning answers both of those questions. 00:05:02.579 --> 00:05:06.160 It tells us what happened, but it also tells us why it happened. 00:05:06.920 --> 00:05:10.019 And so I want to just take a couple of minutes and I want us to think about this passage, 00:05:10.120 --> 00:05:13.840 this very, very famous and well-known passage in Luke's Gospel. 00:05:13.839 --> 00:05:16.399 And I want us to think about three things here. 00:05:16.619 --> 00:05:20.259 I want us to think about the royal puppet at Jesus' coming, 00:05:20.719 --> 00:05:25.859 the real purpose for Jesus' coming, and the right response to Jesus' coming. 00:05:26.139 --> 00:05:28.719 So let's think about these things quickly. 00:05:28.839 --> 00:05:31.099 Firstly, the royal puppet at Jesus' coming. 00:05:31.100 --> 00:05:38.420 The opening few verses of our passage here, Luke tells us the historical details around Jesus' birth. 00:05:39.140 --> 00:05:43.220 And it involves the census that Caesar Augustus, the Roman emperor of the time, 00:05:43.600 --> 00:05:47.020 issued throughout the Roman world for all people to be registered. 00:05:47.140 --> 00:05:48.460 Look at how he says in verse 1, 00:05:48.879 --> 00:05:53.400 In those days the decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world, 00:05:53.480 --> 00:05:56.000 that's the Roman empire, should be registered. 00:05:57.280 --> 00:05:59.500 Now, why does Luke tell us this? 00:05:59.500 --> 00:06:02.480 Well, on the one hand, remember, Luke is a historian. 00:06:03.220 --> 00:06:07.600 At the beginning of Luke's Gospel, he tells us that one of the reasons he wrote his Gospel 00:06:07.600 --> 00:06:11.939 was because a wealthy Roman official called Theophilus had heard the stories of Jesus 00:06:11.939 --> 00:06:13.379 and wanted to know whether it was true. 00:06:14.019 --> 00:06:18.680 And so he commissioned this man called Luke to study the historical facts 00:06:18.680 --> 00:06:22.759 and to gather the evidence and to write an account of the story of Jesus of Nazareth. 00:06:23.339 --> 00:06:24.680 And so that's what Luke is doing. 00:06:24.839 --> 00:06:28.420 He's giving us the historical facts, the account of Jesus' birth. 00:06:28.420 --> 00:06:32.500 And one of the things that's so great about Luke's Gospel in particular 00:06:32.500 --> 00:06:36.360 is all the detail he gives, names and places and dates. 00:06:36.800 --> 00:06:37.840 And so that's what he says here. 00:06:37.920 --> 00:06:44.280 He talks about when Caesar Augustus was Caesar and when Quirinius was governor of Syria, 00:06:44.860 --> 00:06:46.020 a decree went out. 00:06:46.019 --> 00:06:52.139 And so Luke is telling us about how it is that Joseph and Mary came to be in Bethlehem. 00:06:52.699 --> 00:06:55.539 And so why are Joseph and Mary in Bethlehem at this time? 00:06:55.620 --> 00:06:56.599 This wasn't where they lived. 00:06:57.099 --> 00:07:01.779 Well, it's because on the one hand, Caesar Augustus had decided everyone in the known world, 00:07:01.859 --> 00:07:05.500 everyone in the Roman Empire, should go to their hometown where their family comes from 00:07:05.500 --> 00:07:07.560 and be registered in his census. 00:07:07.699 --> 00:07:08.599 So look what he says here. 00:07:08.600 --> 00:07:13.020 In those days, the decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 00:07:13.180 --> 00:07:13.620 Verse 3. 00:07:14.220 --> 00:07:16.860 All went to be registered, each in his own hometown. 00:07:17.600 --> 00:07:22.900 And so Joseph went up from Galilee to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem. 00:07:23.500 --> 00:07:26.460 Now, why did Caesar want this? 00:07:27.200 --> 00:07:28.160 Why issue a census? 00:07:28.340 --> 00:07:31.040 I mean, censuses in the old days wasn't like census these days. 00:07:31.220 --> 00:07:36.060 Caesar wasn't interested in mean, average household income or, you know, education levels, 00:07:36.140 --> 00:07:36.800 those kinds of things. 00:07:36.800 --> 00:07:40.819 Why did Caesar want a census of all the Roman Empire? 00:07:41.720 --> 00:07:46.139 Well, on one hand, it's an exercise in political and economic power. 00:07:46.980 --> 00:07:51.720 Caesar wants to know how many people he has and specifically how many taxes he can expect 00:07:51.720 --> 00:07:54.480 to raise from various people in different parts of his empire. 00:07:55.160 --> 00:07:57.560 Caesar's calculating how many taxes can he raise. 00:07:57.639 --> 00:07:59.439 It's an economic exercise. 00:07:59.879 --> 00:08:06.160 But it's also an exercise in political power because all these foreign lands that he's conquered, 00:08:06.160 --> 00:08:08.840 Caesar wants to remind them, I am Caesar. 00:08:08.960 --> 00:08:09.860 You belong to me. 00:08:09.960 --> 00:08:14.939 He wants to know who lives where so that they brings them into the legal and the fiscal system 00:08:14.939 --> 00:08:17.439 so that these people know they belong to Caesar. 00:08:18.020 --> 00:08:22.440 Caesar's exercising his power, his authority, saying, I am king in this place. 00:08:22.439 --> 00:08:26.620 That's the reason why they're there. 00:08:27.120 --> 00:08:32.860 And so he issues the census and Mary and Joseph go up from Galilee to Bethlehem, a small town 00:08:32.860 --> 00:08:37.960 about eight miles outside of Jerusalem, just at the time that Mary's getting ready to give birth. 00:08:37.960 --> 00:08:44.060 But what Luke wants us to see here, the author, is that's not the real reason they're in Bethlehem, is it? 00:08:44.960 --> 00:08:48.460 Actually, Luke wants to tell us that behind the rule and the reign of Caesar, 00:08:48.460 --> 00:08:53.240 there is another king that's orchestrating everything according to his plans. 00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:57.879 Caesar may be king of the Roman world, but in some senses, he's just a puppet king. 00:08:58.400 --> 00:09:01.400 He's in the hands of the sovereign God that is orchestrating everything. 00:09:01.540 --> 00:09:03.580 So look at what Luke wants us to see. 00:09:03.580 --> 00:09:07.780 Luke wants us to see the real reason that Mary and Joseph are here in Bethlehem 00:09:07.780 --> 00:09:12.320 is because the God of the Bible had promised hundreds, even thousands of years earlier 00:09:12.320 --> 00:09:17.920 that there would come a king, someone of the house in the lineage of David, the great king, 00:09:18.100 --> 00:09:21.120 someone who would come and fulfill the promises of God, 00:09:21.500 --> 00:09:24.660 someone who would restore the fallen kingdom and the broken kingdom. 00:09:25.180 --> 00:09:29.920 Heaven and earth's true king would come who would crush Satan and the forces of evil, 00:09:29.919 --> 00:09:35.399 and he would be born in a town called Bethlehem, the city of David. 00:09:36.279 --> 00:09:41.099 And so 700 years before not only Jesus is born, but Caesar Augustus is born, 00:09:41.579 --> 00:09:44.879 Micah, which some I read to us earlier, says this, 00:09:45.500 --> 00:09:47.679 that there will come a king, heaven and earth's true king, 00:09:48.219 --> 00:09:53.819 who will be born in the town of Bethlehem, the ruler, the one who is from ancient of days, 00:09:54.199 --> 00:09:56.039 the one who is without beginning and end, 00:09:56.039 --> 00:09:59.639 who will come from the city of David and bring peace. 00:10:00.399 --> 00:10:03.120 Friends, that's the reason why Joseph and Mary are in Bethlehem. 00:10:03.799 --> 00:10:07.339 Caesar Augustus is actually just a puppet in the hand of the sovereign God 00:10:07.339 --> 00:10:14.419 who is arranging everything, organizing all of history to accomplish his plans, his purposes. 00:10:15.339 --> 00:10:20.259 And one thing that scripture tells us again and again is that behind the power of kings and rulers, 00:10:20.699 --> 00:10:23.240 presidents and premiers and everyone in authority, 00:10:23.240 --> 00:10:26.899 lies the sovereign God, the God of all creation, 00:10:27.580 --> 00:10:29.500 who is Lord over every single life. 00:10:30.039 --> 00:10:32.720 And even the self-serving actions of Caesar Augustus, 00:10:32.779 --> 00:10:35.279 the most powerful man in the ancient world in this time, 00:10:35.560 --> 00:10:37.759 is simply doing God's bidding. 00:10:38.940 --> 00:10:42.220 Moving people around the ancient world to accomplish God's plans, 00:10:42.620 --> 00:10:43.919 to fulfill God's purposes, 00:10:44.320 --> 00:10:46.700 to do what God had predestined to take place, 00:10:47.060 --> 00:10:48.779 that the Christ, the son of David, 00:10:49.180 --> 00:10:51.259 would be born where God wanted him to, 00:10:51.259 --> 00:10:52.539 in Bethlehem. 00:10:53.220 --> 00:10:55.799 The puppet king behind Christ's coming. 00:10:56.500 --> 00:10:58.419 But we still haven't got to why Jesus came. 00:10:58.779 --> 00:11:00.340 Why did Jesus come? 00:11:01.139 --> 00:11:03.500 Well, Luke wants to tell us that as well. 00:11:03.700 --> 00:11:04.819 What was the purpose? 00:11:04.939 --> 00:11:06.340 And of course, scripture has many answers. 00:11:06.840 --> 00:11:09.259 Jesus came to fulfill the promises of the Old Testament. 00:11:09.899 --> 00:11:13.879 Jesus came to restore the broken kingdom that Adam and Eve had messed up. 00:11:13.879 --> 00:11:18.399 Jesus came to bring, restore lasting peace to this broken world. 00:11:18.539 --> 00:11:20.639 But Luke here tells us another reason. 00:11:20.740 --> 00:11:22.799 So look at what verse 8 onwards says. 00:11:22.879 --> 00:11:24.620 If you've got a Bible, verse 8 says this. 00:11:25.019 --> 00:11:27.659 In the same region, there were shepherds out in the field, 00:11:27.799 --> 00:11:30.179 keeping watch over their flock by night. 00:11:30.740 --> 00:11:32.539 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, 00:11:32.639 --> 00:11:35.059 and the glory of the Lord shone all around them. 00:11:35.779 --> 00:11:37.860 Must have been a rather unnerving sight, right? 00:11:37.860 --> 00:11:40.419 This brilliant angel appears in their midst, 00:11:40.759 --> 00:11:42.220 surrounded by brilliance of glory. 00:11:42.659 --> 00:11:44.419 And they were filled with great fear. 00:11:44.840 --> 00:11:45.460 Makes sense. 00:11:46.039 --> 00:11:46.720 And the angel says, 00:11:46.899 --> 00:11:50.860 Fear not, behold, I bring you good news of accurate. 00:12:17.440 --> 00:12:20.160 In fact, I confess our design that we have here, 00:12:20.259 --> 00:12:21.240 that we designed for this Christmas, 00:12:21.400 --> 00:12:24.200 even this is not actually historically that accurate. 00:12:25.120 --> 00:12:25.519 Why? 00:12:25.620 --> 00:12:28.180 What do we think of when we think of Jesus lying in a manger? 00:12:28.780 --> 00:12:30.420 We think of a wooden manger, 00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:31.460 a crib like this, 00:12:31.600 --> 00:12:33.820 with a straw hanging out the sides, 00:12:33.820 --> 00:12:35.320 and cows kind of eating out. 00:12:35.720 --> 00:12:37.240 Actually, that's probably not what happened. 00:12:37.720 --> 00:12:39.060 In the ancient world in Israel, 00:12:39.180 --> 00:12:40.560 Israel is a very arid country. 00:12:40.840 --> 00:12:41.879 Wood was very scarce. 00:12:42.020 --> 00:12:43.620 There wasn't much wood around at all. 00:12:44.120 --> 00:12:46.200 Wood was almost never used for building, is what archaeologists have found all over Egypt, 00:13:07.460 --> 00:13:08.060 Israel. 00:13:08.800 --> 00:13:09.200 And still, 00:13:09.720 --> 00:13:12.600 limestone mangers are used in the Middle East. 00:13:13.580 --> 00:13:15.100 And why does Luke, 00:13:15.259 --> 00:13:16.600 but Luke keeps on telling us, 00:13:16.660 --> 00:13:18.340 Luke tells us three times in this passage, 00:13:18.480 --> 00:13:20.200 that Jesus is wrapped in swaddling cloths, 00:13:20.200 --> 00:13:22.259 and laid in a manger. 00:13:22.460 --> 00:13:23.800 Three times Luke tells us this. 00:13:23.879 --> 00:13:24.440 Why is Luke, 00:13:24.840 --> 00:13:25.320 in the system, 00:13:25.420 --> 00:13:26.900 why is Luke making such a big deal 00:13:26.900 --> 00:13:28.920 of the fact that Jesus was placed in a manger? 00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:31.000 Well, as I said earlier, 00:13:31.180 --> 00:13:32.020 Luke is a historian, 00:13:32.140 --> 00:13:33.800 but Luke was also a medical doctor. 00:13:33.900 --> 00:13:34.580 He was a physician. 00:13:35.320 --> 00:13:38.280 Luke was very attentive to detail. 00:13:39.400 --> 00:13:40.660 And Luke wouldn't write anything 00:13:40.660 --> 00:13:42.100 the very end of the gospel, 00:14:06.960 --> 00:14:08.680 Luke is going to tell us about another time 00:14:08.679 --> 00:14:11.059 when Jesus' helpless body 00:14:11.059 --> 00:14:13.719 will once again be wrapped in linen cloths 00:14:13.719 --> 00:14:15.719 and laid in a stone enclosure. 00:14:16.419 --> 00:14:17.259 Except that time, 00:14:17.339 --> 00:14:18.000 it won't be a manger.
