--> 00:01:37.200 Last Sunday, we saw Jesus at the pool in Jerusalem. 00:01:37.200 --> 00:01:42.420 And we watched as he healed a man who was lying there, 00:01:42.540 --> 00:01:45.900 who had been unable to walk for the past 38 years. 00:01:46.659 --> 00:01:48.320 He said to him, 00:01:48.579 --> 00:01:51.939 Pick up your mat and walk. 00:01:53.060 --> 00:01:56.920 And an amazing miracle happened. 00:01:57.900 --> 00:01:58.840 He did. 00:01:59.120 --> 00:02:00.100 He got up. 00:02:00.780 --> 00:02:02.719 He picked up his mat and he walked. 00:02:02.719 --> 00:02:05.859 But unfortunately, he was pulled over by the religious leaders. 00:02:07.500 --> 00:02:11.500 They questioned him as to why he was carrying his mat on the Sabbath. 00:02:11.639 --> 00:02:13.199 That was considered work. 00:02:15.740 --> 00:02:18.479 He kind of deflected the blame a little bit to Jesus. 00:02:19.840 --> 00:02:21.759 The man who healed me. 00:02:22.819 --> 00:02:26.219 He told me to pick up my mat, to be carrying it on the Sabbath. 00:02:26.219 --> 00:02:29.960 He didn't know who Jesus was at the time. 00:02:30.039 --> 00:02:32.340 But later, after he bumped into Jesus at the temple, 00:02:32.520 --> 00:02:35.379 he reported back to the religious leaders 00:02:35.379 --> 00:02:39.800 that it was Jesus who had told him to pick up his mat 00:02:39.800 --> 00:02:41.560 and Jesus who had healed him. 00:02:42.539 --> 00:02:46.280 So, John has already set the scene in what we looked at last week 00:02:46.280 --> 00:02:51.639 for a bit of a clash between Jesus and the Jewish leaders. 00:02:51.639 --> 00:02:56.299 So, let's pick up the story in verse 16 of John chapter 5. 00:02:57.659 --> 00:03:01.459 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, 00:03:02.439 --> 00:03:05.719 the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 00:03:06.639 --> 00:03:09.119 In his defense, Jesus said to them, 00:03:09.359 --> 00:03:13.179 My father is always at his work to this very day, 00:03:13.579 --> 00:03:15.599 and I too am working. 00:03:16.399 --> 00:03:19.739 For this reason, they tried all the more to kill him. 00:03:19.740 --> 00:03:22.860 Not only was he breaking the Sabbath, 00:03:23.040 --> 00:03:25.560 but he was even calling God his own father, 00:03:26.379 --> 00:03:30.120 making himself equal with God. 00:03:31.540 --> 00:03:36.700 So, we see the tension beginning to rise 00:03:36.700 --> 00:03:40.920 between Jesus and the Jewish leaders. 00:03:41.040 --> 00:03:46.360 And all of this is sparked by this healing of the man at the pool 00:03:46.360 --> 00:03:50.640 and telling him to carry his mat on the Sabbath. 00:03:51.240 --> 00:03:51.820 John says, 00:03:52.380 --> 00:03:56.040 Because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, 00:03:56.780 --> 00:03:58.920 the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 00:03:58.980 --> 00:03:59.820 Notice that he says, 00:04:00.080 --> 00:04:01.040 These things. 00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:02.560 Plural. 00:04:03.660 --> 00:04:07.160 It wasn't just this one minor infraction. 00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:12.360 There was a number of things that Jesus was doing on the Sabbath. 00:04:12.360 --> 00:04:14.720 And to really get the full picture, 00:04:14.860 --> 00:04:18.379 we kind of have to look at some of the other gospel records. 00:04:18.980 --> 00:04:24.280 They tell us of some of the times where Jesus has already had run-ins 00:04:24.280 --> 00:04:26.660 with the Pharisees, the religious leaders, 00:04:27.220 --> 00:04:28.340 back in Galilee, 00:04:28.660 --> 00:04:33.280 and over this particular issue of keeping the Sabbath. 00:04:34.400 --> 00:04:36.580 You may remember some of those encounters. 00:04:36.579 --> 00:04:41.539 You may remember the time when Jesus and his disciples 00:04:41.539 --> 00:04:44.159 were in a sense pulled over by the religious leaders 00:04:44.159 --> 00:04:45.740 because they were, 00:04:46.379 --> 00:04:51.439 Jesus' disciples were picking grain out of the field 00:04:51.439 --> 00:04:53.240 while they were walking along on the Sabbath. 00:04:53.419 --> 00:04:54.899 They considered that work. 00:04:56.560 --> 00:04:58.039 So, there was that run-in. 00:04:58.319 --> 00:05:01.079 Then there was the time when Jesus was at the synagogue with, 00:05:01.799 --> 00:05:04.979 and there was a man who had a shriveled hand there. 00:05:04.980 --> 00:05:07.960 And the Pharisees, the religious leaders, 00:05:08.120 --> 00:05:09.900 they were just hovering like vultures, 00:05:10.319 --> 00:05:11.080 waiting to see, 00:05:11.200 --> 00:05:15.280 is Jesus going to do the work of healing this man on the Sabbath day? 00:05:15.700 --> 00:05:18.220 If he does, we'll nail him to the wall for it. 00:05:19.520 --> 00:05:21.080 There was that encounter. 00:05:21.220 --> 00:05:22.500 And already back then, 00:05:23.420 --> 00:05:25.140 the gospel writers, the other ones, 00:05:25.259 --> 00:05:30.240 tell us that the Pharisees were plotting to kill Jesus. 00:05:30.240 --> 00:05:33.100 And so, probably these things are in the backdrop 00:05:33.100 --> 00:05:36.000 as we come to our passage today. 00:05:36.600 --> 00:05:40.079 And then, this healing of the man at the pool in Jerusalem 00:05:40.079 --> 00:05:44.660 just kind of adds to the kindling 00:05:44.660 --> 00:05:47.300 and sparks the flame, 00:05:47.439 --> 00:05:50.240 which causes the fire that this head-on collision 00:05:50.240 --> 00:05:51.780 is going to bring about. 00:05:51.779 --> 00:05:57.539 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, 00:05:58.459 --> 00:05:59.719 these kinds of things, 00:05:59.919 --> 00:06:01.219 and repeatedly, 00:06:01.819 --> 00:06:06.339 the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 00:06:06.639 --> 00:06:07.839 Now, that word persecute, 00:06:07.919 --> 00:06:09.159 that's a strong word. 00:06:10.579 --> 00:06:13.759 They began to go after him 00:06:13.759 --> 00:06:15.879 with intensity, 00:06:16.579 --> 00:06:18.379 with intentionality. 00:06:21.019 --> 00:06:22.879 And what was their goal? 00:06:23.539 --> 00:06:25.459 I mean, certainly they harassed him. 00:06:25.459 --> 00:06:29.240 They said all kinds of things to him. 00:06:29.319 --> 00:06:31.639 They tried to humiliate him in public, 00:06:31.759 --> 00:06:33.060 in front of other people. 00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:36.879 But their goal was to kill Jesus. 00:06:37.060 --> 00:06:39.920 And John tells us this in verse 18. 00:06:39.920 --> 00:06:43.920 After he said what's in verse 17, 00:06:44.379 --> 00:06:46.220 for this reason, 00:06:46.840 --> 00:06:48.220 for saying this, 00:06:48.319 --> 00:06:50.520 they tried all the more to kill him. 00:06:51.360 --> 00:06:54.100 So, they were already trying to kill Jesus 00:06:54.100 --> 00:06:56.720 before he said what's in verse 17. 00:06:57.580 --> 00:06:59.160 And now that he said that, 00:06:59.220 --> 00:07:00.660 they're trying all the more. 00:07:00.780 --> 00:07:02.879 So, persecute is the right word. 00:07:03.819 --> 00:07:06.620 The Jewish leaders were persecuting him. 00:07:06.700 --> 00:07:09.280 They wanted to do anything that they could 00:07:09.279 --> 00:07:10.319 to get to him 00:07:10.319 --> 00:07:13.739 and to see him killed. 00:07:15.239 --> 00:07:16.219 Now, of course, 00:07:16.339 --> 00:07:19.619 they were also religious leaders. 00:07:19.619 --> 00:07:21.919 And so, they didn't just go and hire hit men 00:07:21.919 --> 00:07:23.179 and all that kind of stuff. 00:07:23.619 --> 00:07:26.719 They were going to start by using the tools 00:07:26.719 --> 00:07:28.279 that they had available to them. 00:07:28.779 --> 00:07:29.899 Mainly, at this point, 00:07:29.959 --> 00:07:31.379 it's the legal challenge. 00:07:32.059 --> 00:07:34.099 Breaking the Sabbath law. 00:07:35.699 --> 00:07:37.519 So, they were going after Jesus. 00:07:37.519 --> 00:07:39.000 And in my Bible, 00:07:39.120 --> 00:07:39.740 my translation, 00:07:39.959 --> 00:07:40.219 it says, 00:07:40.359 --> 00:07:41.879 they began to persecute him. 00:07:41.959 --> 00:07:43.919 And that word's not actually in the original. 00:07:44.180 --> 00:07:44.479 That's, 00:07:44.939 --> 00:07:47.620 it's an interpretive decision that they've made. 00:07:47.699 --> 00:07:47.979 Literally, 00:07:48.120 --> 00:07:50.719 it's the Jewish leaders were persecuting him. 00:07:51.120 --> 00:07:52.759 Probably more of a sense of 00:07:52.759 --> 00:07:56.620 continuously over an unspecified period of time. 00:07:57.579 --> of a legal sense to it. 00:08:18.159 --> 00:08:18.979 In his defense, 00:08:19.179 --> 00:08:20.439 my translation says, 00:08:20.439 --> 00:08:26.000 I don't think Jesus was actually on trial 00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:27.980 in a formal sense, 00:08:28.500 --> 00:08:30.259 but certainly in an informal sense, 00:08:30.420 --> 00:08:30.939 he was. 00:08:31.079 --> 00:08:31.300 I mean, 00:08:49.039 Who gave you the authority to be working, 00:08:49.259 --> 00:08:53.100 to be doing these kinds of things like you're doing on the Sabbath? 00:08:54.379 --> 00:09:02.059 And Jesus' response is not what we would expect him to say. 00:09:02.139 --> 00:09:04.080 At least it's not what I expect him to say. 00:09:06.480 --> 00:09:09.279 I would expect Jesus to say something like, 00:09:19.259 because the stuff that I'm doing is not regular work. 00:09:20.679 --> 00:09:29.320 And the way that work has been defined by the elders over the years in tradition 00:09:29.320 --> 00:09:33.039 goes way beyond what God originally intended 00:09:33.039 --> 00:09:39.500 when he first gave the law or the command to keep the Sabbath day holy. 00:09:40.080 --> 00:09:41.700 That's the Sermon on the Mount, 00:12:17.819 --> 00:12:20.179 Matthew 5, verse 17. 00:12:21.179 --> 00:12:21.899 He said, 00:12:21.899 --> 00:12:26.679 Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. 00:12:26.679 --> 00:12:28.839 I have not come to abolish them, 00:12:29.019 --> 00:12:30.679 but to fulfill them. 00:12:31.979 --> 00:12:34.539 In verse 19 of that same passage, 00:12:34.759 --> 00:12:40.599 Therefore, anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands of the law 00:12:40.599 --> 00:12:46.459 and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. 00:12:46.460 --> 00:12:52.100 So Jesus already has this mentality, 00:12:52.320 --> 00:12:52.940 this attitude, 00:12:52.940 --> 00:12:57.220 and has been teaching that we are to obey the law. --> 00:13:11.080 specifically when it comes to this commandment pertaining to the Sabbath, 00:13:11.080 --> 00:13:14.759 that was one of the Ten Commandments. 00:13:16.040 --> 00:13:23.780 And God himself etched those words onto the stone tablet with his finger 00:13:23.780 --> 00:13:25.560 and gave them to Moses. 00:13:26.200 --> 00:13:27.460 So Jesus is saying, 00:13:27.920 --> 00:13:31.440 Don't think that I've come to say that we just ignore that. 00:13:32.379 --> 00:13:36.200 Absolutely you are to obey the commands that God has given. 00:13:36.200 --> 00:13:43.200 And it's a big no-no to teach someone else to just set those commands aside. 00:13:46.080 --> 00:13:52.500 So was Jesus telling this man to disregard the Sabbath 00:13:52.500 --> 00:13:58.480 and do what was unlawful on the Sabbath when he told him to pick up his mat? 00:13:58.480 --> 00:14:01.019 My answer is no. 00:14:01.779 --> 00:14:09.039 Because he knew that the way that the elders and the rabbis had defined this point we might wonder, 00:14:22.240 --> 00:14:27.360 well, maybe, I mean, as it comes to the Sabbath law, 00:14:27.500 --> 00:14:30.100 isn't Jesus above the Sabbath law? 00:14:30.779 --> 00:14:33.860 I mean, is he expected to keep it anyway? 00:14:33.980 --> 00:14:38.240 Or can he do as he pleases on the Sabbath because of who he is? 00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:41.960 This is a trickier question. 00:14:42.620 --> 00:14:45.080 We do hear from the other Gospels, 00:14:45.200 --> 00:14:48.320 Jesus say that the Son of Man, referring to himself, 00:14:48.659 --> 00:14:50.200 is Lord of the Sabbath. 00:14:50.200 --> 00:14:52.700 And even the way he talks here, 00:14:52.820 --> 00:14:55.000 my Father is always at his work to this very day, 00:14:55.060 --> 00:14:56.020 and I too am working. 00:14:56.700 --> 00:15:02.120 We could get this sense that Jesus is above the law, 00:15:02.500 --> 00:15:04.660 that this law doesn't pertain to him. 00:15:05.759 --> 00:15:08.420 But I think it's so important that we remember 00:15:08.420 --> 00:15:12.379 that Jesus is truly God, 00:15:12.379 --> 00:15:14.740 and at the same time, 00:15:14.740 --> 00:15:18.000 he is truly man, 00:15:18.620 --> 00:15:20.500 truly a human being. 00:15:21.539 --> 00:15:25.259 And that comes with implications. 00:15:26.159 --> 00:15:29.860 And probably the place that we see this most clearly 00:15:29.860 --> 00:15:34.080 and how it relates is in Galatians chapter 4, 00:15:34.379 --> 00:15:36.600 verses 4 and 5, 00:15:36.639 --> 00:15:39.039 where Paul says this. 00:15:39.039 --> 00:15:39.519 He says, 00:15:39.519 --> 00:15:42.419 But when the fullness of the time came, 00:15:43.439 --> 00:15:45.819 God sent forth his Son, 00:15:46.519 --> 00:15:47.639 born of a woman, 00:15:48.399 --> 00:15:50.959 born under the law, 00:15:51.500 --> 00:15:57.019 so that he might redeem those who were under the law. 00:15:57.019 --> 00:16:00.740 So what Paul is telling us there 00:16:00.740 --> 00:16:03.399 is that Jesus was born of a woman. 00:16:03.899 --> 00:16:06.659 He was sent by God into this world 00:16:06.659 --> 00:16:09.259 and born as a physical, 00:16:09.559 --> 00:16:12.059 flesh and blood human being. 00:16:13.100 --> 00:16:14.299 Not only that, 00:16:14.399 --> 00:16:17.079 but he was born under the law. 00:16:17.220 --> 00:16:18.360 As a man, 00:16:18.460 --> 00:16:19.659 as a human being, 00:16:20.399 --> 00:16:23.179 he was under the authority 00:16:23.179 --> 00:16:25.219 of God's law, 00:16:25.299 --> 00:16:26.159 which he had given 00:16:26.159 --> 00:16:27.779 a long time ago 00:16:27.779 --> 00:16:28.899 through Moses. 00:16:29.919 --> 00:16:30.279 And so, 00:16:30.639 --> 00:16:31.099 yes, 00:16:31.379 --> 00:16:33.159 he had to submit
