I want us to look at today is how it affects the way we do our work and how we treat people. 00:01:33.359 --> 00:01:36.280 We're looking today at God's goals for Christians at work. 00:01:36.280 --> 00:01:47.659 This is the third of the household type things Paul addressed in Colossians chapter 3. 00:01:48.760 --> 00:01:57.299 We looked the first week at God's goals for couples in the home, husbands and wives. 00:01:58.020 --> 00:02:01.260 Then we looked at God's goals for parents and children. 00:02:01.260 --> 00:02:07.480 Well, today we're looking at God's goals for how we live as Christians at work. 00:02:07.800 --> 00:02:10.480 We're going to begin in Colossians chapter 3, verse 22. 00:02:11.140 --> 00:02:22.700 But before we read, I want you to note, this is addressed to Christian slaves in the first century. 00:02:22.699 --> 00:02:31.219 Paul, in verses 22 through 25, Paul is writing to Christian slaves. 00:02:32.219 --> 00:02:38.199 And then chapter 4, verse 1, he's writing to Christian owners of slaves, masters. 00:02:39.239 --> 00:02:49.439 Now, at that time, first century, first century in the Roman Empire, slavery was universally accepted. 00:02:49.439 --> 00:02:55.479 Now, that does not mean that it was morally right, but it was an unquestioned way of life. 00:02:55.780 --> 00:03:08.579 At that point in time, a lot of scholars tell us that there were as many as one-third of the population of the Roman Empire slaves. 00:03:09.439 --> 00:03:15.300 Some even say half the people you'd meet on the street would be slaves. 00:03:15.300 --> 00:03:26.680 Slavery that existed in first century Rome was different from the horribly inhumane institution of slavery that existed in this country up until the Civil War. 00:03:27.240 --> 00:03:30.219 But no form of slavery has ever been humane. 00:03:31.640 --> 00:03:34.840 Life was harsh and cruel for many slaves in the first century. 00:03:36.420 --> 00:03:37.080 Think about it. 00:03:38.080 --> 00:03:40.660 Slaves were considered property. 00:03:40.659 --> 00:03:44.659 Breathing property. 00:03:44.659 --> 00:03:45.780 Breathing property. 00:03:47.500 --> 00:03:50.560 Human beings were sold and bought. 00:03:52.079 --> 00:03:59.039 But the institution of slavery that Paul addressed was better than many forms of slavery throughout the history of the world. 00:03:59.379 --> 00:04:08.960 For an example, many people became slaves for a number of reasons, like being captured in a war, being born into slavery. 00:04:08.960 --> 00:04:12.640 Some were sold into slavery to pay off their debts. 00:04:14.180 --> 00:04:21.100 And there were people who even sold themselves into slavery, listen to this, to make their lives better. 00:04:22.939 --> 00:04:26.579 And in their case, by obtaining Roman citizenship. 00:04:27.699 --> 00:04:34.300 Or by achieving the social status of their master. 00:04:34.300 --> 00:04:39.920 In other words, as a slave, they could move up in life class-wise. 00:04:41.379 --> 00:04:50.100 Many slaves were able to work and save their money, make money and save money, and even buy their freedom. 00:04:51.620 --> 00:04:53.019 Race was not a factor. 00:04:54.220 --> 00:04:57.000 I know that comes to mind when we think of slavery in this country. 00:04:57.120 --> 00:05:01.280 But race was not a factor in first century slavery. 00:05:01.279 --> 00:05:03.959 There was no slave social class. 00:05:05.399 --> 00:05:08.159 They could be found at every level of society. 00:05:09.379 --> 00:05:11.859 Some did unskilled manual labor. 00:05:12.239 --> 00:05:15.259 But some were highly educated and they were teachers. 00:05:16.639 --> 00:05:18.739 Some were medical doctors. 00:05:18.740 --> 00:05:25.560 The point of this information about slavery is to show that there are parallels, definite parallels, 00:05:25.900 --> 00:05:33.600 between first century slaves and masters and today's employees and employers. 00:05:34.980 --> 00:05:41.699 There's even some parallels, probably equal parallels, between students and teachers. 00:05:43.360 --> 00:05:46.139 Military personnel of different ranks. 00:05:46.139 --> 00:05:52.599 What Paul says to these slaves and masters could even apply to inmates and guards in a prison. 00:05:54.099 --> 00:06:07.579 Let's look now at Paul's instructions to slaves and masters as principles for how Christians should approach their jobs 00:06:07.579 --> 00:06:14.259 and relate to people that they work for or supervise. 00:06:14.259 --> 00:06:24.180 Now, if you're a student, elementary, high school, college, apply this to the way you do your schoolwork 00:06:24.180 --> 00:06:27.079 and the way you treat teachers. 00:06:28.079 --> 00:06:33.259 Teachers, you can apply this to the way you relate to and treat your students. 00:06:34.159 --> 00:06:35.019 Let's read it. 00:06:35.060 --> 00:06:37.099 Colossians 3, beginning in verse 22. 00:06:37.100 --> 00:06:39.100 Bondservants. 00:06:39.100 --> 00:06:39.820 Bondservants. 00:06:41.300 --> 00:06:44.320 As far as I know, only the English Standard Version. 00:06:44.439 --> 00:06:47.960 ESV translates this word, bondservants. 00:06:48.060 --> 00:06:51.100 Every other translation uses the word slaves. 00:06:52.460 --> 00:06:57.360 The English Standard Version translators, what they're trying to do is look at it, 00:06:57.439 --> 00:07:01.160 at the context that this word slave is found. 00:07:01.160 --> 00:07:11.720 And what they're doing here is they have in mind that Paul is addressing slaves who had the opportunity to buy their freedom. 00:07:13.580 --> 00:07:19.900 Sort of like an indentured servant, even in days gone by in our own country. 00:07:20.480 --> 00:07:25.460 So that's why that says bondservants in ESV and every other translation is going to say slaves. 00:07:25.459 --> 00:07:36.379 Paul is thinking, the ESV translators believe, that he's addressing the kind of slaves who most likely had the opportunity to buy their freedom. 00:07:36.799 --> 00:07:37.500 Bondservants. 00:07:37.959 --> 00:07:46.019 Obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye job to the best of your ability. 00:08:33.379 --> 00:08:35.120 That's what he's talking about in verse 22. 00:08:35.500 --> 00:08:37.740 Let's look at it, break it down into two parts. 00:08:37.860 --> 00:08:39.680 Number one, do your job. 00:08:40.139 --> 00:08:45.779 He says, bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters. 00:08:45.779 --> 00:08:54.919 Now, slaves in the first century, they had no choice but obey or suffer extreme consequences if they did not. 00:08:55.779 --> 00:08:57.279 It's not that way for employees today. 00:08:58.199 --> 00:09:05.819 If you go to work tomorrow and you are ordered to do this and you really don't want to do it, you can quit. 00:09:05.820 --> 00:09:11.260 You can say no, turn around and walk out, and it's over. 00:09:12.100 looking at you and you want to look good in their eyes. 00:10:49.639 --> 00:10:54.779 That's the mentality that the old comedian Groucho Marx described when he said, 00:10:54.779 --> 00:11:00.059 No man leaves before his time unless, of course, the boss has gone home early. 00:11:00.059 --> 00:11:06.339 You see, God calls us to do our work. 00:11:07.839 --> 00:11:08.979 Do it all. 00:11:09.779 --> 00:11:11.899 And do it with sincerity of heart. 00:11:12.019 --> 00:11:13.959 Which means having pure motives. 00:11:15.000 --> 00:11:16.419 Pure intentions. 00:11:17.679 --> 00:11:19.119 We Some of those slaves had cruel masters. 00:15:35.860 --> 00:15:40.480 Some of their expectations were totally unrealistic. 00:15:42.580 --> 00:15:45.779 You may work for an unreasonable boss. us at work. 00:18:15.759 --> 00:18:22.019 Do your job with the realization that your work ethic will ultimately be judged by Jesus. 00:18:23.619 --> 00:18:26.440 That sort of ramps up the, gets our attention doesn't it? 00:18:27.519 --> 00:18:30.839 And notice that Paul points out both aspects of judgment in these verses. 00:18:31.559 --> 00:18:37.599 The reward, the Lord rewards our
