00:07:14.519 So, we're going to start with 1 Kings 18, but we'll get there in just a minute, 00:07:14.639 --> 00:07:18.519 because I want to tell you quickly what James tells us about Elijah. 00:07:19.560 --> 00:07:22.659 In James 5, you don't have to turn there, but he says this, 00:07:23.099 --> 00:07:26.339 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. 00:07:26.740 --> 00:07:28.980 He prayed earnestly that it would not rain. 00:07:28.980 --> 00:07:33.360 And it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 00:07:34.340 --> 00:07:38.640 So, the point that James is making is that Elijah was a normal person. 00:07:39.759 --> 00:07:44.840 Just like us, he prayed a big prayer and he was answered by a big God. 00:07:44.939 --> 00:07:48.780 We can pray to the same God, and going to pray earnestly for something, 00:08:33.500 --> 00:08:38.279 why would he pray earnestly for something that will cause a famine? 00:08:38.279 --> 00:08:45.839 Why not pray earnestly for a really miraculous big bumper crop? 00:08:47.980 --> 00:08:51.659 I think we have to understand the setting that Elijah is in. 00:08:51.860 --> 00:08:58.079 At this time, the nation of Israel is caught up in the worship of a false God called Baal. 00:08:58.080 --> 00:09:02.680 And Baal was supposed to be the God who sent rain. 00:09:02.940 --> 00:09:04.139 He was the God of rain. 00:09:04.840 --> 00:09:07.180 He was also the God of lightning and thunder. 00:09:08.259 --> 00:09:11.660 So Elijah prays that God would hold back the rain 00:09:11.660 --> 00:09:17.200 because that would show very clearly that Baal was not the real power. 00:09:17.200 --> 00:09:22.300 Israel was worshipping Baal, but Baal was not in control of the rain. 00:09:22.840 --> 00:09:23.379 God was. 00:09:24.340 --> 00:09:26.740 Elijah knew that as long as the rain came, 00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:30.560 the people were going to credit that to Baal. 00:09:31.320 --> 00:09:33.860 So what they actually needed more than
