going to have our deacons come forward, 00:04:06.699 --> 00:04:08.539 and they are going to pass the bread and the cup. 00:04:09.120 --> 00:04:13.500 And I want to welcome all of you who are here that know Christ to come to this table. 00:04:14.240 --> 00:04:20.040 I do want to begin this morning by coming with a couple words of caution, if I may. 00:04:20.040 --> 00:04:27.020 And in saying what I will at the very outset, it's not intending or my intention is not to be off-putting, 00:04:27.100 --> 00:04:32.840 but to be clear about what we do when we come to the Lord's table and to appeal to your conscience. 00:04:33.700 --> 00:04:37.600 This fellowship, and I remember when I candidated here many years ago, 00:04:37.900 --> 00:04:43.520 one of the questions that I was actually asked in that pastoral search process was, 00:04:43.520 --> 00:04:49.360 all right, do you believe that the Lord's table is to be fenced? 00:04:49.360 --> 00:04:54.740 And that is a terminology that has come through church history to refer to the fact that in some churches, 00:04:54.740 --> 00:04:58.939 if you are not a member of that particular church, 00:04:58.939 --> 00:05:03.639 or you're not a member in good standing of churches of the same flavor, 00:05:04.460 --> 00:05:08.259 when they have the Lord's table, you are disinvited. 00:05:08.379 --> 00:05:10.080 You're said, don't take the elements. 00:05:10.920 --> 00:05:17.240 And I explained that I believe on the basis of what we read in 1 Corinthians chapter 11, 00:05:17.240 --> 00:05:25.680 that the Lord's table is not to be fenced other than by the conscience of the individuals that come to this table and are at that service. 00:05:27.100 --> 00:05:32.160 And so I want you to take some time and turn in your Bible, if you would, to 1 Corinthians chapter 11, 00:05:32.160 --> 00:05:39.280 and we're going to take just a couple moments to speak to a couple words of caution in relationship to these elements. 00:05:40.560 --> 00:05:46.760 For one, I want you to understand that celebrating the Lord's table and taking the bread and the cup 00:05:46.760 --> 00:05:52.280 is actually meant to be a visible expression of faith, 00:05:52.440 --> 00:05:56.500 as well as a testimony to all who see what you are doing, 00:05:56.500 --> 00:06:00.240 that you are a believer and you have confidence in the finished work of Christ. 00:06:01.339 --> 00:06:07.060 There is a sense in which taking the bread and taking the cup is like saying, 00:06:07.720 --> 00:06:11.060 I believe Jesus died for my sins and he is my Lord and Savior. 00:06:11.860 --> 00:06:15.139 In fact, actually, if you were to take the Greek and kind of open it up, 00:06:15.180 --> 00:06:17.560 and I'm not going to delabor the issue this morning, 00:06:17.560 --> 00:06:20.560 but in verse 26, where you see that word proclaim, 00:06:20.560 --> 00:06:25.839 it says you do proclaim the Lord's death till he comes. 00:06:26.079 --> 00:06:31.180 The Greek word there is communicating the idea that actually when you take the bread and when you take the cup, 00:06:31.339 --> 00:06:35.759 you are involved in saying publicly, verbally, with your mouth, 00:06:36.199 --> 00:06:41.379 I believe Jesus is my Savior and I trust him for my salvation. 00:06:42.740 --> 00:06:46.519 Now, I would not be put off at all. 00:06:46.519 --> 00:06:52.079 In fact, I'm wondering if anybody has the nerve to do it, 00:06:52.139 --> 00:06:54.859 but I wouldn't be put off at all if, as you take the bread, 00:06:55.339 --> 00:06:57.479 you can say softly to yourself, 00:06:57.599 --> 00:07:01.759 I believe Jesus is my Savior and I thank you for dying for me, Lord Jesus. 00:07:01.839 --> 00:07:02.519 I am blessed. 00:07:03.859 --> 00:07:09.139 I don't know that there is anything indicated in Scripture as to exactly what was said, 00:07:09.139 --> 00:07:14.379 but we have the idea here that it is a time where people give public testimony to their faith. 00:07:14.379 --> 00:07:21.300 And so, if you are here, and you have never come to faith in Christ, 00:07:21.920 --> 00:07:26.279 to take that bread and take that cup and to actually, in the process, 00:07:26.439 --> 00:07:30.899 make a public announcement of your genuine faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:07:31.060 --> 00:07:34.699 it's a little contradictory or it's a little dishonest, isn't it? 00:07:35.339 --> 00:07:38.240 It's like saying, yes, I know Christ, 00:07:38.240 --> 00:07:42.040 when the truth of the matter is, is you really haven't come to know him. 00:07:42.040 --> 00:07:45.460 Now, I want to make a distinction here and clarify something. 00:07:46.540 --> 00:07:52.240 There's a difference between knowing Jesus as a historical person 00:07:52.240 --> 00:07:57.720 that at one point was here on earth and he did, you know, he was a nice guy, 00:07:58.240 --> 00:08:04.560 but that's not the same as coming to personal faith in Christ as your Lord and Savior. 00:08:06.080 --> 00:08:09.379 Do you know what's hard about believing in Jesus in that context? 00:08:09.379 --> 00:08:16.699 It is that you cannot come to faith in Christ without, first of all, 00:08:16.959 --> 00:08:23.860 believing what Christ has to say about you as a broken, ruined, despised sinner 00:08:23.860 --> 00:08:28.779 who deserves the judgment of God for the darkness and the blackness of your heart. 00:08:30.540 --> 00:08:33.799 Remember what Jesus said when he was dealing with the Pharisees 00:08:33.799 --> 00:08:39.120 and they were a little put out that he was celebrating, he was having dinner with sinners. 00:08:39.379 --> 00:08:43.439 And remember Jesus said, hey, listen, it's not those who are healthy that need the physician, 00:08:43.659 --> 00:08:45.139 it's those who are sick. 00:08:46.759 --> 00:08:53.679 And until you come to realize that you're not going to get to heaven on the basis of where you grew up 00:08:53.679 --> 00:08:58.679 or how many years you went to Sunday school or the fact that you're a pretty good person, 00:08:58.679 --> 00:09:04.259 until you come to realize that you're a sinner justly condemned before a holy God, 00:09:04.939 --> 00:09:08.519 you are not going to be led by the grace of God to come and cry out and say, 00:09:09.059 --> 00:09:15.339 I need Jesus Christ as my personal Savior and I trust him because he died in my place 00:09:15.339 --> 00:09:23.299 and his blood has satisfied the judgment of God and I claim what he has done by faith for myself. 00:09:23.299 --> 00:09:28.699 And so when we come and we take the bread and we take the cup, 00:09:28.839 --> 00:09:33.120 if you're sitting out there and you've never really come to faith in Christ, 00:09:33.359 --> 00:09:36.819 I would encourage you just probably let the bread and the cup go by 00:09:36.819 --> 00:09:41.419 because to take the bread, take the cup, and not really believe in the Lord Jesus Christ 00:09:41.419 --> 00:09:44.839 is to do something that is fundamentally dishonest. 00:09:46.059 --> 00:09:49.779 Now nobody in this congregation is ever going to say, hold it, stop. 00:09:49.779 --> 00:09:56.319 But I trust the prompting of the Spirit of God cautions you if you don't know Christ. 00:09:57.220 --> 00:09:59.480 And before you take the bread and cup, and by the way, 00:09:59.539 --> 00:10:02.079 does anybody know how long it takes to come to faith in Christ? 00:10:02.939 --> 00:10:03.639 A heartbeat? 00:10:05.159 --> 00:10:05.919 Do you follow that? 00:10:06.720 --> 00:10:12.439 I tell you, one of the joys that I have is hearing the various testimonies of people. 00:10:12.539 --> 00:10:14.799 By the way, in order to become a member of this congregation, 00:10:15.079 --> 00:10:18.259 one of the things you have to do is you have to actually share your testimony. 00:10:18.259 --> 00:10:24.100 And so many of God's people have different testimonies. 00:10:25.600 --> 00:10:30.259 But at the heart of it is the reality that God, by his grace, 00:10:30.379 --> 00:10:32.340 brought you to the point of seeing your sin, 00:10:32.620 --> 00:10:35.220 and you cried out and asked Christ to be your Savior, 00:10:35.639 --> 00:10:38.899 and he heard you and has given you new life. 00:10:40.419 --> 00:10:43.519 And so this morning, if you are here and you do not know Christ, 00:10:43.620 --> 00:10:46.419 I would appeal to you, before you take the bread and the cup, 00:10:46.419 --> 00:10:50.599 there you sit, convicted of your sin, cry out and ask Christ to save you, 00:10:50.719 --> 00:10:53.439 and knowing him as your Savior, you're welcome to the table. 00:10:55.159 --> 00:10:58.419 There are others that are cautioned in relationship to the table. 00:10:59.219 --> 00:11:01.799 And as we look at the passage, if you would, 00:11:03.039 --> 00:11:04.599 it says there in verse 27, 00:11:04.600 --> 00:11:08.980 whoever therefore eats the bread and drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner 00:11:08.980 --> 00:11:11.820 will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:13.960 And as we look at that context, 00:11:14.040 --> 00:11:19.600 I want you to understand that actually the reason that 1 Corinthians 11 is in the Bible 00:11:19.600 --> 00:11:23.279 is because the church at Corinth 00:11:23.279 --> 00:11:27.940 was going through the motions of communion, 00:11:27.940 --> 00:11:32.640 and they were not actually doing what they thought they were doing. 00:11:33.400 --> 00:11:36.660 In fact, Paul, earlier in the chapter, he says, 00:11:36.780 --> 00:11:38.800 hey, what you're doing is not the Lord's table. 00:11:39.960 --> 00:11:44.920 You see, part of gathering together in this love feast 00:11:44.920 --> 00:11:47.420 is having the right attitudes towards one another. 00:11:48.020 --> 00:11:49.020 How many of you heard me say that? 00:11:49.740 --> 00:11:50.280 Everybody stop. 00:11:50.400 --> 00:11:51.180 Look over here. 00:11:51.480 --> 00:12:26.199 in their attitudes towards one another, 00:12:26.379 --> 00:12:27.559 they were just going ahead 00:12:27.559 --> 00:12:29.399 and doing their own selfish, self-centered, 00:12:29.539 --> 00:12:31.559 argumentative, little belligerent attitude thing. 00:12:32.039 --> 00:12:34.659 And Paul says, what you're doing doesn't cut it. 00:12:35.819 --> 00:12:38.740 And then, here in this verse 27 and on, 00:12:38.779 --> 00:12:39.840 he says, listen, by the way, 00:12:40.120 --> 00:12:42.899 you can be taking communion in an unworthy manner. 00:12:42.899 --> 00:12:47.459 And so, if you're here this morning, 00:12:48.819 --> 00:12:52.600 and really you are honest with yourself, 00:12:52.720 --> 00:12:56.240 and you are sitting there with some really negative, 00:12:56.620 --> 00:13:00.860 ungodly, unkind, unforgiving attitudes 00:13:00.860 --> 00:13:02.039 towards other believers, 00:13:02.340 --> 00:13:04.340 then before you take the elements, 00:13:04.459 --> 00:13:05.919 what I would appeal to you 00:13:05.919 --> 00:13:08.899 is that you take some time to quietly confess 00:13:09.480 --> 00:13:12.019 the hardness and stubbornness of your heart 00:13:12.019 --> 00:13:14.460 and ask him to cleanse you of that. 00:13:14.740 --> 00:13:16.620 And by the way, after communion, 00:13:16.799 --> 00:13:18.379 after you've said, I'm committed to Christ, 00:13:18.460 --> 00:13:19.139 I'm going to do what's right, 00:13:19.379 --> 00:13:20.840 probably one of the things that you should do 00:13:20.840 --> 00:13:21.860 is as you're walking out, 00:13:21.939 --> 00:13:24.299 you should say, nobody has a problem with anybody, 00:13:24.419 --> 00:13:25.720 but I'm just kind of using this as a reference. 00:13:25.819 --> 00:13:26.179 You follow
