Amen. 00:01:22.519 --> 00:01:29.079 So we will be reading from the book of Mark, chapter 10, verses 17 to 22. 00:01:29.859 --> 00:01:36.180 So for this first part of the sermon, this one I will read from Mark 10, 17. 00:01:36.180 --> 00:01:46.020 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, 00:01:46.540 --> 00:01:50.700 Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? 00:01:52.980 --> 00:02:03.520 So in this reading, we come across a man who runs after Jesus and kneels before him in front of everybody else. 00:02:03.519 --> 00:02:10.859 So we can see that Mark is trying to tell us, someone who is quite desperate and also genuine, 00:02:11.299 --> 00:02:13.939 wanting to know something, to learn something. 00:02:15.219 --> 00:02:21.900 And also the fact that he kneels before Jesus is showing his great respect for Jesus 00:02:21.900 --> 00:02:30.159 and addresses Jesus as his teacher, and he wants to know what he can do to gain eternal life. 00:02:30.159 --> 00:02:39.479 I think this man would have observed Jesus for quite some time, I mean, for him to do that, 00:02:39.900 --> 00:02:45.359 to trust that Jesus would be able to tell him what to do to gain eternal life. 00:02:46.879 --> 00:02:52.840 And also, Telstra says this man would have been searching for the answer for quite some time. 00:02:52.840 --> 00:02:56.039 So he's desperate, because he couldn't find it elsewhere. 00:02:56.439 --> 00:03:02.259 He might have asked many people, but he just couldn't see it from anyone. 00:03:02.439 --> 00:03:09.640 But somehow, he knew that, he knows that Jesus knows the answer. 00:03:09.639 --> 00:03:19.159 Unlike the religious leaders of his days, who thought Jesus was a deceiver, 00:03:19.500 --> 00:03:25.859 because of the way Jesus handled Sabbath or other topics, 00:03:26.739 --> 00:03:30.439 this man understands that Jesus has something he has been looking for. 00:03:30.439 --> 00:03:38.819 This man also thinks that the secret of eternal life is closely guarded by Jesus and his followers. 00:03:39.120 --> 00:03:41.539 He therefore kneels before Jesus publicly, 00:03:41.939 --> 00:03:46.159 hoping that Jesus would see his sincerity and tell him the secret. 00:03:47.360 --> 00:03:48.680 And who is this man? 00:03:49.740 --> 00:03:53.800 From the help of the other Gospels, Matthew and Luke, 00:03:53.800 --> 00:03:59.240 we can gather that this man is young, maybe in his 20s, 00:03:59.240 --> 00:04:00.460 that he is younger than Jesus. 00:04:01.200 --> 00:04:06.040 He is also wealthy and in a position of power. 00:04:06.860 --> 00:04:10.540 And he's usually referred to as a rich young ruler. 00:04:11.600 --> 00:04:15.340 So this man has everything everyone in the world would like to have. 00:04:16.080 --> 00:04:20.160 Youth, power, wealth. 00:04:20.160 --> 00:04:23.520 So we know that when we are young, 00:04:24.020 --> 00:04:28.380 we usually do not have power or wealth to enjoy life. 00:04:29.100 --> 00:04:30.180 And then as we get older, 00:04:30.740 --> 00:04:33.920 we are too busy trying to gain wealth and power 00:04:33.920 --> 00:04:36.040 and don't have time to enjoy life. 00:04:36.879
