gods of the Philistines. 00:01:46.359 --> 00:01:54.379 So again, we have this picture of idolatry and slavery with Israel. 00:01:55.319 --> 00:02:00.879 The Baals and the Ashtoreths, they were the gods of the native Canaanites. 00:02:00.959 --> 00:02:02.340 This is the land in which they're in. 00:02:02.460 --> 00:02:05.340 And so this is their native gods, their idols. 00:02:06.719 --> 00:03:12.859 Ehud, we all remember him because he's the guy stuck the sword in the fat guy. 00:03:14.419 --> 00:03:19.620 He was against the Ammonites and the Moabites. 00:03:20.479 --> 00:03:23.879 And Shamgar, we just went straight over him. 00:03:23.879 --> 00:03:26.159 He only got one verse, really, so we just missed him. 00:03:26.879 --> 00:03:30.680 He helped Israel against the Philistines. 00:03:31.039 --> 00:03:34.460 And in chapter 5, it was Deborah against the Canaanites. 00:03:35.419 --> 00:03:43.259 So what we get here is that every time Israel worshipped the idols of a nation, 00:03:43.979 --> 00:03:47.960 that nation ended up oppressing Israel. 00:03:47.960 --> 00:03:55.740 And this time, it's the God of the Ammonites and the Philistines. 00:03:56.200 --> 00:04:02.659 Verse 7 tells us that this is the consequence of them worshipping their gods. 00:04:03.740 --> 00:04:07.120 He, that's God, became angry with them. 00:04:08.040 --> 00:04:13.340 He sold them into the which in turn leads to enslavement to the Ammonites once again. 00:05:17.000 --> 00:05:29.879 Despite their pain and their misery, Israel continued to worship the same idols that brought them the pain It speaks of people who exchange the glory of the immortal God 00:09:47.179 --> 00:09:53.959 for images made to look like mortal human beings and birds and animals and reptiles. 00:09:53.960 --> 00:09:58.420 That is, it's a description of idolatry. 00:09:59.280 --> 00:10:01.820 Reject a God, create our own gods. 00:10:02.800 --> 00:10:04.060 And what was the result? 00:10:04.700 --> 00:10:08.759 The very next verse, Romans 1, 24, 00:10:09.160 --> 00:10:15.240 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts. 00:10:15.720 --> 00:10:17.019 He let them do it. 00:10:17.500 --> 00:10:19.420 He abandoned them to their desires. 00:10:19.419 --> 00:10:27.120 And the phrase desires of the heart means to have an overwhelming desire, 00:10:27.319 --> 00:10:32.519 drive, an uncontrollable and therefore an enslaving desire. 00:10:34.419 --> 00:10:39.279 For God to give them over means that he has allowed the things 00:10:39.279 --> 00:10:41.259 for which they have put their hope, 00:10:41.599 --> 00:10:43.480 things for which are not God, 00:10:43.620 --> 00:10:47.559 to become the ruling powers of their lives. 00:10:47.559 --> 00:10:51.459 And in fact, Romans 1 describes all of humanity. 00:10:53.859 --> 00:11:00.479 Once God gave them over because of their idolatry in Romans 1, 24, 00:11:00.779 --> 00:11:03.219 what's the next thing that happens?
