want us to climb again up Mount Moriah to look at Abraham and Isaac. 00:00:19.500 --> 00:00:21.240 I preached on this three weeks ago. 00:00:21.320 --> 00:00:22.920 I don't expect you to remember that. 00:00:24.300 --> 00:00:29.960 But it is such a poignant passage that I believe we need to look at it one more time. 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:39.620 I say that because there are similarities here to the cross of Christ that to me seem amazing. 00:00:40.539 --> 00:00:41.820 And I want you to see it. 00:00:42.320 --> 00:00:47.920 I don't want you to miss the sacrificial similarities. 00:00:49.019 --> 00:00:55.420 It's in Genesis chapter 22 beginning in verse 1 and it says this. 00:00:55.420 --> 00:01:00.719 After these things, God tested Abraham and said to him, Abraham. 00:01:01.420 --> 00:01:03.820 And he said, here am I. 00:01:04.540 --> 00:01:09.659 He said, take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah 00:01:09.659 --> 00:01:15.140 and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you. 00:01:15.960 --> 00:01:21.299 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took 00:03:55.859 Help us to see the correlation, not only of the Christ event and the Abraham and Isaac event, 00:03:56.439 --> 00:04:05.879 but also the relationship to our life, of what it means to acknowledge the sacrificial death of Christ 00:04:05.879 --> 00:04:09.239 and then live our lives as living sacrifices. 00:04:10.939 --> 00:04:14.780 Give us understanding today as can only come history. 00:04:30.100 --> 00:04:34.819 And the most pivotal event in all of history happened on Mount Calvary. 00:04:36.079 --> 00:04:39.800 Jesus died on the cross and rose again. 00:04:39.800 --> 00:04:43.860 That is what history rotates around. 00:04:44.779 --> 00:04:52.659 And if you look at the Old Testament, there is often scripture that is a foreshadowing of the sacrifice of Christ. 00:04:53.159 --> 00:04:55.719 It foretells what is to come. 00:04:56.779 --> 00:05:04.439 In reality, the Old Testament sets the stage by showing us the need of Christ. 00:05:04.439 --> 00:05:09.899 Everything that's happened since the cross looks back to the cross. 00:05:10.899 --> 00:05:13.540 In other words, our hope is found in the cross. 00:05:14.319 --> 00:05:20.519 And in a very real sense, those that came before the cross were helpless, 00:05:21.060 --> 00:05:27.079 if not for the coming of the event of the cross of Christ. 00:05:27.079 --> 00:05:32.019 Even though their knowledge of Christ was limited at best. 00:05:32.019 --> 00:05:40.519 And that is filled with such a foreshadowing that we see in the Old Testament again and again. 00:05:41.519 --> 00:05:45.099 the pain of the sacrifice. 00:06:27.720 --> 00:06:37.079 When Abraham was told in verse 2 to sacrifice his son, his only son, 00:06:39.079 --> 00:06:43.199 it was the ultimate demand. 00:06:46.180 --> 00:06:52.759 For as long as Abraham had had the call of God upon his life, 00:06:53.180 --> 00:06:54.660 and that was throughout his adult years, 00:06:55.100 --> 00:06:58.699 he looked to the promise of the birth of his son. 00:06:58.780 --> 00:07:00.980 Not only did he want a child, 00:07:01.980 --> 00:07:06.519 but his future legacy hung on this boy. 00:07:08.220 --> 00:07:13.579 The promised covenant that God made with Abraham would be only fulfilled through his line. 00:07:13.579 --> 00:07:18.800 Yet here God says all of that, sacrifice it. 00:07:19.000 --> 00:07:20.060 Sacrifice him. 00:07:20.379 --> 00:07:22.359 It was the ultimate ask. 00:07:24.139 --> 00:07:31.060 But God did not ask anything of Abraham that he would not do himself 00:07:31.060 --> 00:07:40.120 because the price of holiness requires that sin must be paid for permanently. 00:07:40.120 --> 00:07:48.079 Before the cross of Christ, bulls and goats of yesteryear sacrificed in orchestrated fashion, 00:07:48.680 --> 00:07:54.060 served as just a stopgap to an eternal sin problem. 00:07:54.840 --> 00:07:58.439 Every sacrifice that was made in a tabernacle or a temple 00:07:58.439 --> 00:08:04.439 were only a foreshadowing of the sacrifice of the sinless one to come. 00:08:04.439 --> 00:08:09.259 The reality is the offering of Isaac is similar to the cross of Christ 00:08:09.259 --> 00:08:13.660 concerning the pain involved of the sacrifice. 00:08:14.540 --> 00:08:20.160 But not only that, but there's also a similarity to me in the struggle of the journey. 00:08:21.480 --> 00:08:23.420 I don't want you to read this casually. 00:08:24.680 --> 00:08:27.439 Abraham and Isaac wound their way up to the mountain 00:08:27.439 --> 00:08:30.939 to the place that God ordained for them to go. 00:08:30.939 --> 00:08:35.940 And it was upon that spot where that sacrifice was offered 00:08:35.940 --> 00:08:39.100 that the temple would be built in the future. 00:08:40.120 --> 00:08:44.360 It was upon that spot that the sacrifices on the Day of Atonement 00:08:44.360 --> 00:08:48.000 and the Holy of Holies, the sacrifices that would be made 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:50.480 would be on that spot. 00:08:51.779 --> 00:08:55.559 It was at that spot God picked out and led him. 00:08:55.559 --> 00:08:58.159 It was a prophetic spot. 00:09:00.059 --> 00:09:02.099 And it was a three-day journey. 00:09:05.899 --> 00:09:10.599 Three days of knowing that he was to offer his son. 00:09:12.599 --> 00:09:17.159 Three days, I believe, of wondering how it all played out. 00:09:19.799 --> 00:09:21.339 Like the man said to Jesus, 00:09:21.479 --> 00:09:23.239 I believe, help thou my unbelief. 00:09:23.240 --> 00:09:25.940 I believe that must have been the prayer of Abraham 00:09:25.940 --> 00:09:27.680 as he wound up that mountain. 00:09:27.820 --> 00:09:29.080 Three days of dread. 00:09:29.379 --> 00:09:30.659 Three days of struggle. 00:09:31.019 --> 00:09:32.279 Three days of heartache. 00:09:32.580 --> 00:09:34.060 Three days of surrender. 00:09:34.440 --> 00:09:36.480 Giving up his way for God's way. 00:09:37.980 --> 00:09:39.620 And it reminds me of another struggle. 00:09:41.659 --> 00:09:44.159 Because in Luke chapter 9, verse 51, 00:09:44.539 --> 00:09:46.159 Jesus, it says, 00:09:46.639 --> 00:09:50.980 set his face toward Jerusalem. 00:09:50.980 --> 00:09:56.120 Now, roughly six months after that verse, 00:09:56.980 --> 00:10:00.139 he would climb Calvary's hill. 00:10:02.080 --> 00:10:05.700 But that pivotal verse in Luke 00:10:05.700 --> 00:10:10.420 shows us that everything after that point 00:10:10.420 --> 00:10:13.420 was aimed at the cross of Christ 00:10:13.420 --> 00:10:14.460 and what he would do on the cross. 00:10:14.460 --> 00:10:17.940 His earlier ministry was gathering disciples. 00:10:19.060 --> 00:10:21.800 His earlier ministry was teaching those disciples 00:10:21.800 --> 00:10:23.540 the truths of God's kingdom. 00:10:25.280 --> 00:10:28.220 His earlier days was showing them how to minister. 00:10:29.360 --> 00:10:32.340 He was displaying for them the power of the Holy Spirit 00:10:32.340 --> 00:10:35.500 and training them to found the church. 00:10:35.900 --> 00:10:38.300 And after three years of that kind of ministry, 00:10:38.299 --> 00:10:42.740 it all becomes directly related to the cross. 00:10:44.539 --> 00:10:46.459 And when his last week began, 00:10:46.579 --> 00:10:48.439 he barred a beast of burden, 00:10:48.879 --> 00:10:50.479 made a triumphal entry, 00:10:50.719 --> 00:10:52.279 and began his journey 00:10:52.279 --> 00:10:55.159 to struggle up Calvary's hill. 00:10:55.159 --> 00:10:58.759 And on the night he was betrayed, 00:10:59.759 --> 00:11:02.279 and before he would be crucified, 00:11:02.519 --> 00:11:06.539 he suffered in prayer. 00:11:07.899 --> 00:11:09.679 As I told you at Easter time, 00:11:10.679 --> 00:11:12.500 I think you can only understand 00:11:12.500 --> 00:11:13.740 the weight of the cross 00:11:13.740 --> 00:11:16.759 if you understand the journey that got him there. 00:11:16.759 --> 00:11:19.080 And in the same way, 00:11:20.759 --> 00:11:24.840 what kind of walk was that 00:11:24.840 --> 00:11:27.360 with Abraham and his boy? 00:11:30.500 --> 00:11:32.059 The struggle of the journey. 00:11:33.639 --> 00:11:34.460 Third similarity. 00:11:36.080 --> 00:11:38.439 The loneliness of the surrender. 00:11:40.299 --> 00:11:42.860 When Abraham and Isaac reached the foot of Mount Moriah, 00:11:43.019 --> 00:11:46.139 Abraham spoke to those that traveled with him. 00:11:46.139 --> 00:11:48.059 Verse 5 tells us what happened. 00:11:49.019 --> 00:11:50.439 And it says in verse 5, 00:11:51.340 --> 00:11:55.039 Then Abraham said to his young men, 00:11:55.299 --> 00:11:58.199 Stay here with the donkey. 00:11:59.279 --> 00:12:01.220 I and the boy will go over there 00:12:01.220 --> 00:12:04.460 and worship and come back 00:13:28.759 in the Garden. 00:13:29.879 --> 00:13:30.580 It was the loneliness 00:13:30.580 --> 00:13:31.120 of the surrender. 00:13:31.600 --> 00:13:32.220 Fourth thing is 00:13:32.220 -->
