encouragement to the mothers and future mothers of our congregation. 00:00:48.379 --> 00:00:51.760 You may find some challenge in God's Word to us this morning, 00:00:51.760 --> 00:00:58.500 but I want you to know that I believe that the mothers of our church work hard to excel in the training of their children, 00:00:58.500 --> 00:01:01.140 and this does not go unnoticed. 00:01:01.759 --> 00:01:04.500 Moms, we know you are working at this. 00:01:05.400 --> 00:01:11.420 I know that your job as mothers can often seem mundane and unending, 00:01:11.920 --> 00:01:14.439 and that it is always exhausting. 00:01:14.439 --> 00:01:19.879 So I want you to be encouraged this morning to persist by grace, 00:01:20.159 --> 00:01:24.700 to train your children as God will use you to yield fruit in their lives. 00:01:25.299 --> 00:01:29.539 If you are not a mother or future mother ever planning on being a mother, 00:01:29.659 --> 00:01:31.759 like you may be a man in the room, 00:01:31.760 --> 00:01:38.340 I hope that this morning will help aim your prayers for the moms of our congregation. 00:01:39.439 --> 00:01:45.260 So with that in mind, let's take a look at 2 Timothy chapter 3, verses 14 through 17. 00:01:46.320 --> 00:01:51.439 Beloved, this is God's Word to us, written for His glory and our good. 00:01:51.939 --> 00:01:57.000 We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands. 00:01:57.000 --> 00:02:26.979 Paul writes, 00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:40.240 In verse 14, Timothy is exhorted by Paul to continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, 00:02:40.240 --> 00:02:48.599 as opposed to, set up against, in juxtaposition to, the men of verse 13. 00:02:49.360 --> 00:02:53.340 Paul says they're evil people and imposters, 00:02:53.340 --> 00:02:59.420 that will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 00:03:00.060 --> 00:03:02.980 It's in light of that statement in verse 13, 00:03:03.280 --> 00:03:06.099 that he's now exhorting Timothy to continue, 00:03:06.460 --> 00:03:12.500 but you continue in what you have learned and firmly believed. 00:03:12.500 --> 00:03:19.340 And then Paul encourages him to faithfulness to those things with the phrase, 00:03:20.240 --> 00:03:23.699 knowing from whom you learned it. 00:03:24.520 --> 00:03:29.120 Paul states that remembering the godly people from whom you learned the truth 00:03:29.120 --> 00:03:33.000 is a source of strength and of encouragement. 00:03:34.120 --> 00:03:39.319 Continue in the things you learned because of who taught them to you. 00:03:39.319 --> 00:03:46.799 And Timothy learned the truth that he has learned and has firmly believed by being instructed, 00:03:47.060 --> 00:03:48.639 we see this in verse 15, 00:03:48.900 --> 00:03:50.900 in the sacred writings, 00:03:50.959 --> 00:03:52.900 and also we see in verse 16, 00:03:53.039 --> 00:03:55.519 Paul tells us this is the Scripture. 00:03:56.819 --> 00:03:59.859 Timothy had been taught the Bible. 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:03.740 But who is it that taught Timothy the Bible? 00:04:03.740 --> 00:04:08.520 Timothy learned the Scripture from his family. 00:04:09.879 --> 00:04:12.180 Timothy's mother was a Christian. 00:04:12.900 --> 00:04:17.420 His father, unfortunately, and as far as we know, was not. 00:04:17.639 --> 00:04:20.480 And we know this from Acts chapter 16 and verse 1, 00:04:20.560 --> 00:04:21.180 where Luke writes, 00:04:21.319 --> 00:04:23.639 Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. 00:04:24.280 --> 00:04:27.319 A disciple was there named Timothy, 00:04:27.879 --> 00:04:31.400 the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer. 00:04:31.399 --> 00:04:34.519 He was a follower of Christ, a believer in the way. 00:04:35.279 --> 00:04:35.979 And then Luke writes, 00:04:36.159 --> 00:04:37.299 but his father, 00:04:37.979 --> 00:04:40.979 in opposition to, in difference to, 00:04:41.159 --> 00:04:43.419 was a Greek. 00:04:43.919 --> 00:04:46.219 He doesn't say that he was a believing Greek. 00:04:46.339 --> 00:04:48.379 He's speaking to his ethnicity, to be sure. 00:04:49.099 --> 00:04:50.859 He just says that he's a Greek. 00:04:50.959 --> 00:04:55.139 He doesn't include any reality that he's a follower of Christ there. 00:04:55.139 --> 00:04:59.439 We know later, 1 Timothy 1, verse 2, 00:04:59.560 --> 00:05:02.740 that Paul became Timothy's spiritual father. 00:05:02.860 --> 00:05:05.560 He adopted him in that sense, 00:05:05.680 --> 00:05:06.199 where we read, 00:05:06.319 --> 00:05:10.659 to Timothy, my true child in the faith. 00:05:11.839 --> 00:05:17.360 So, Timothy was also instructed by Paul in the way of the Lord. 00:05:17.759 --> 00:05:20.199 A bit earlier in chapter 3 of 2 Timothy, 00:05:20.599 --> 00:05:22.579 verses 10 and the first part of 11, 00:05:22.579 --> 00:05:23.599 we can read, 00:05:23.740 --> 00:05:26.139 you, however, have followed my teaching, 00:05:26.300 --> 00:05:27.139 this is Paul speaking, 00:05:27.599 --> 00:05:28.560 my conduct, 00:05:28.879 --> 00:05:30.359 my aim in life, 00:05:30.459 --> 00:05:31.060 my faith, 00:05:31.159 --> 00:05:31.879 my patience, 00:05:32.180 --> 00:05:32.939 my love, 00:05:33.259 --> 00:05:34.519 my steadfastness, 00:05:34.639 --> 00:05:36.060 my persecutions, 00:05:36.740 --> 00:05:37.740 and sufferings. 00:05:38.399 --> 00:05:41.459 And so we have Timothy learning from his mother. 00:05:41.579 --> 00:05:43.459 We have Timothy learning from Paul 00:05:43.459 --> 00:05:45.479 as a spiritual father, 00:05:45.680 --> 00:05:47.620 and likely, 00:05:48.419 --> 00:05:49.219 his grandmother. 00:05:49.220 --> 00:05:51.300 You see in the first part of verse 15, 00:05:51.420 --> 00:05:53.300 and how from childhood you've been acquainted 00:05:53.300 --> 00:05:55.840 with the sacred writings. 00:05:56.920 --> 00:05:58.160 And in chapter 1 of 2 Timothy, 00:05:58.340 --> 00:05:59.060 verse 5, 00:05:59.520 --> 00:05:59.920 Paul writes, 00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:02.160 I'm reminded of your sincere faith, 00:06:03.160 --> 00:06:05.960 a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois, 00:06:29.040 that he should walk. 00:06:29.819 --> 00:06:32.699 So, Timothy is instructed. 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:34.939 He is trained in the Bible 00:06:34.939 --> 00:06:36.459 by Paul as an adult, 00:06:36.519 --> 00:06:38.160 but also as a child, 00:06:38.740 --> 00:06:41.160 he becomes acquainted with the Scripture. 00:06:41.740 --> 00:06:42.680 That is to say, 00:06:43.379 --> 00:06:44.879 Timothy knew his Bible 00:06:44.879 --> 00:06:46.759 from an early age. 00:06:47.699 --> 00:06:50.240 God worked saving faith in Jesus Christ 00:06:50.240 --> 00:06:51.040 into Timothy 00:06:51.040 --> 00:06:53.560 through the labors of his mother 00:06:53.560 --> 00:06:55.019 and grandmother. 00:06:55.459 --> 00:06:58.360 Recall that when Paul encounters him 00:06:58.360 --> 00:07:00.139 in Acts chapter 16, 00:07:00.360 --> 00:07:02.980 he's already there called a disciple. 00:07:03.300 --> 00:07:05.540 He's already a follower of Jesus Christ. 00:07:06.019 --> 00:07:07.980 God has used the work of his mother 00:07:07.980 --> 00:07:09.180 and his grandmother 00:07:09.180 --> 00:07:10.199 and their instruction 00:07:10.199 --> 00:07:12.980 to bring him to saving faith. 00:07:12.980 --> 00:07:15.300 What an absolute blessing it is 00:07:15.300 --> 00:07:16.800 that God includes us 00:07:16.800 --> 00:07:18.680 in his saving purposes 00:07:18.680 --> 00:07:20.140 toward our
