They don't need God's grace and no one so bad. 00:00:35.179 --> 00:00:41.219 They can't have it, which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word. 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:50.019 We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark and you'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus in his life and his death and his resurrection. 00:00:50.020 --> 00:00:56.340 And as we were going through the beginning, chapters 1 through 8, we asked this question, who is Jesus? 00:00:57.080 --> 00:01:02.700 We saw in the middle of chapter 8, Peter answers it definitively for us, that Jesus is the Christ. 00:01:03.140 --> 00:01:08.460 He's the one who's come to be the ultimate prophet, priest, and king for God's people. 00:01:08.920 --> 00:01:16.540 And so now we've been on a journey with a slightly different question heading out from that, which is what does it look like to follow after Jesus? 00:01:16.540 --> 00:01:26.320 And over the last few weeks, we have seen, as Jesus literally heads to Jerusalem, that the kingdom operates in a way that is upside down. 00:01:26.400 --> 00:01:29.340 It operates in a way that is different from the world. 00:01:29.640 --> 00:01:32.360 We've seen that when it came to marriage and sex. 00:01:32.719 --> 00:01:41.380 We've seen that when it comes to children, when it comes to money, and then last week when it comes to power and glory and success and fame. 00:01:41.379 --> 00:01:49.119 Now this week, it might appear on the surface that we've turned away from that, that we're simply looking at another healing story. 00:01:49.239 --> 00:01:55.579 In fact, this is the last healing that Jesus will perform before Holy Week begins in chapter 11. 00:01:55.920 --> 00:02:01.060 But it is actually not just another blind man who's given sight. 00:02:01.939 --> 00:02:09.960 Jesus is using this, Mark is using this, as a conclusion to the upside down nature of the kingdom. 00:02:09.960 --> 00:02:16.360 In fact, it in some ways connects all the stories that come before what we've seen over the last month or so, 00:02:16.580 --> 00:02:20.980 as Jesus gets right at the issue of desire. 00:02:22.379 --> 00:05:39.340 And there was an exercise that some of those counselors had to do 00:05:39.339 --> 00:05:43.679 in their very last year of the program together when they were doing their internship. 00:05:44.299 --> 00:05:48.019 Meaning they were practicing with actual clients in real life situations. 00:05:48.019 --> 00:05:52.879 And then they would meet together to be coached and mentored and to discuss these things. 00:05:53.439 --> 00:05:57.079 And some of them in their coaching groups were required to do an exercise 00:05:57.079 --> 00:05:59.699 that they referred to as goaling. 00:06:00.659 --> 00:06:02.739 Goaling, going along with the word goal. 00:06:02.959 --> 00:06:04.479 Something that you want or desire. 00:06:04.480 --> 00:06:07.580 And that was, in fact, the purpose willing to admit to anyone? 00:06:27.759 --> 00:06:33.939 And it turned out to be a much harder exercise than it sounds like on the surface 00:06:33.939 --> 00:06:38.379 because it involves grappling with what it is we want most of all. 00:06:38.839 --> 00:06:45.800 The person who presents a public image of having this carefree existence that they love, 00:06:45.899 --> 00:06:47.480 full of trips and experiences, 00:06:48.060 --> 00:06:52.680 has to wrestle with whether they actually are deeply lonely 00:06:52.680 --> 00:06:57.100 and want to find someone to settle down with. 00:06:57.740 --> 00:07:01.519 The person who presents as a family man has to ask himself 00:07:01.519 --> 00:07:06.240 if deep down he wants professional success more than anything else. 00:07:06.900 --> 00:07:09.699 Maybe someone works for a company nine to five 00:07:09.699 --> 00:07:11.600 and what they're afraid to say out loud 00:07:11.600 --> 00:07:14.519 is that they wish that they could work for themselves. 00:07:15.600 --> 00:07:20.079 Maybe it's something as simple as being comfortable financially. 00:07:20.079 --> 00:07:23.019 Maybe you just want to have friends who you can trust, 00:07:23.120 --> 00:07:26.779 who enjoy you, and whom you enjoy. 00:07:29.180 --> 00:07:30.879 Desire is a funny thing, 00:07:31.279 --> 00:07:38.099 and often we haven't slowed down enough to know what it is we actually want. 00:07:38.180 --> 00:07:41.120 We can be caught off guard by them when they appear. 00:07:42.099 --> 00:07:44.500 Now, when these counselors were given this exercise, 00:07:44.680 --> 00:07:47.139 the story that I heard they were told at the very beginning, 00:07:47.139 --> 00:07:49.740 a sobering one was of a man who did the goaling, 00:07:50.199 --> 00:07:51.860 and he decided at the end of it 00:07:51.860 --> 00:07:54.699 that what he wanted more than anything else, 00:07:54.740 --> 00:07:56.839 his desire, what he was going to head for, 00:07:57.279 --> 00:08:00.039 was he had a number in his head of his annual salary. 00:08:00.159 --> 00:08:04.219 This man wanted to make $500,000 a year. 00:08:06.939 --> 00:08:08.479 And at the end of the year, 00:08:08.560 --> 00:08:10.979 after he had completed his goaling exercise, 00:08:10.980 --> 00:08:13.620 he had accomplished what he set out to do. 00:08:13.759 --> 00:08:17.439 He was making $500,000 a year, 00:08:18.160 --> 00:08:20.080 except that there was a catch. 00:08:21.439 --> 00:08:25.580 In that year, he had also lost his family. 00:08:27.879 --> 00:08:31.280 Desire is a dangerous thing. 00:08:32.279 --> 00:08:34.560 The heart is a risky thing. 00:08:34.559 --> 00:08:36.399 And as they say, 00:08:36.500 --> 00:08:38.119 we have to be careful what we wish for 00:08:38.119 --> healing story for Jesus, 00:08:50.879 --> 00:08:54.599 but actually it's deeply connected to our passage from last week. 00:08:54.739 --> 00:08:56.639 It's so connected, in fact, 00:08:56.679 --> 00:08:59.339 that I almost preached last week's passage 00:08:59.339 --> 00:09:03.159 and this week's passage as one sermon rather than two, 00:09:03.159 --> 00:09:06.799 and it's because there's this phrase that appears in both stories. 00:09:06.919 --> 00:09:10.139 There's this connection that ties them intimately together. 00:09:10.299 --> 00:09:14.639 It's Jesus' question that he asked last week in verse 36. 00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:17.740 Remember, James and John come to him and they say, 00:09:17.860 --> 00:09:20.579 we want you to give us whatever it is that we ask for. 00:09:20.879 --> 00:09:23.000 And Jesus responds by saying this, 00:09:23.579 --> 00:09:27.240 what do you want me to do for you? 00:09:27.240 --> 00:09:35.080 It's not a coincidence that that same exact question appears in this passage. 00:09:35.379 --> 00:09:37.539 This blind man is crying out to Jesus. 00:09:37.700 --> 00:09:39.659 Those around him are trying to silence him. 00:09:39.980 --> 00:09:41.440 Jesus calls him to come. 00:09:41.500 --> 00:09:43.259 And what is it that Jesus says to him? 00:09:43.379 --> 00:09:45.379 The exact same words. 00:09:45.840 --> 00:09:49.899 What do you want me to do for you? 00:09:49.899 --> 00:09:55.360 Mark has placed these two stories together 00:09:55.360 --> 00:09:58.919 because he wants us to put them side by side. 00:09:59.139 --> 00:10:03.779 He wants us to see this same question asked of two different people 00:10:03.779 --> 00:10:08.279 and for us to realize how radically different the answers are. 00:10:08.500 --> 00:10:11.919 One answers that Rabbi, let me recover my sight. 00:10:26.680 --> 00:10:30.300 I've told you before that repetition in the Bible matters. 00:10:30.440 --> 00:10:34.540 And this repetition here is not just meant to tie these two stories together. 00:10:34.780 --> 00:10:39.019 It is to turn the barrel of the story straight at us, the readers, 00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:42.600 because the question that Jesus asks of James and John, 00:10:42.820 --> 00:10:45.259 the question that he asks of this blind man, 00:10:45.259 --> 00:10:49.700 is the same question Mark means for his readers to answer. 00:10:51.620 --> 00:10:56.439 What is it that you want Jesus to do for you? 00:10:56.440 --> 00:11:02.700 When we come into this story, verse 46, 00:11:02.960 --> 00:11:05.020 they're crossing the Jordan River, 00:11:05.340 --> 00:11:08.460 which means that they're heading from the west towards the east. 00:11:08.540 --> 00:11:13.420 This is to remind us that Jesus is getting closer and closer to Jerusalem. 00:11:13.760 --> 00:11:15.800 And so as he's nearing the cross, 00:11:16.180 --> 00:11:18.920 things are coming into greater and greater focus. 00:11:19.320 --> 00:11:23.440 Next week, chapter 11 is going to start out with his triumphal entry into Jerusalem 00:11:23.440 --> 00:11:26.760 when he rides a donkey as a conquering king. 00:11:27.600 --> 00:11:30.540 I've told you before that as the gospel of Mark continues, 00:11:30.540 --> 00:11:34.100 we're going to see three groups of people merge into two. 00:11:34.420 --> 00:11:37.220 It's been pointed out that as we begin in the gospel, 00:11:37.360 --> 00:11:39.060 there are folks who love Jesus, 00:11:39.480 --> 00:11:40.980 folks who are opposed to Jesus, 00:11:41.120 --> 00:11:42.940 and folks who are ambivalent to Jesus. 00:11:43.480 --> 00:11:45.240 As we continue in the gospel, 00:11:45.380 --> 00:11:46.920 that middle category disappears, 00:11:46.919 --> 00:11:48.459 and we only have two. 00:11:48.839 --> 00:11:51.599 Either we love Jesus and want to follow him, 00:11:51.659 --> 00:11:54.419 or we're opposed to him and reject him. 00:11:54.979 --> 00:11:57.019 It's in that that we see this man, 00:11:57.139 --> 00:11:57.979 verse 47, 00:11:58.159 --> 00:11:59.679 he's crying out. 00:12:00.559 --> 00:12:02.120 Maybe he's ashamed, 00:12:02.319 --> 00:12:03.439 maybe he's embarrassed, 00:12:04.179 --> 00:12:07.519 but he is too desperate to care. 00:12:09.299 --> 00:12:10.740 He does something else that's interesting. 00:12:10.959 --> 00:12:11.839 In verse 47, 00:12:11.980 --> 00:12:13.919 he hears that it's Jesus of Nazareth, 00:12:13.919 --> 00:12:16.379 but he doesn't cry that out. 00:12:16.439 --> 00:12:17.459 What does he say instead? 00:12:18.240 --> 00:12:19.139 Did you notice it? 00:12:20.620 --> 00:12:21.319 He says, 00:12:21.459 --> 00:12:21.779 Jesus, 00:12:22.399 --> 00:12:24.000 son of David. 00:12:24.959 --> 00:12:29.419 That son of David is language that refers to Jesus as the king, 00:12:29.519 --> 00:12:33.679 because remember that David was the quintessential king of Israel, 00:12:33.679 --> 00:12:38.039 and it was from David's line that the greater king was meant to come. 00:12:38.139 --> 00:12:39.179 And so this blind man, 00:12:39.459 --> 00:12:40.839 at least at some level, 00:12:41.019 --> 00:12:42.740 understands Jesus' identity. 00:12:42.740 --> 00:12:46.820 He knows something about the fact that Jesus is the king. 00:12:48.799 --> 00:12:50.879 But unlike the disciples, 00:12:51.279 --> 00:12:52.740 unlike James and John, to have just profound insights 00:15:08.659 --> 00:15:09.579 into God's word, 00:15:09.659 --> 00:15:11.019 but we are instead here 00:15:11.019 --> 00:15:12.679 to be saved. 00:15:14.059 --> 00:15:15.879 I told you over and over 00:15:15.879 --> 00:15:17.139 that we have to admit 00:15:17.139 --> 00:15:17.919 real need, 00:15:18.019 --> 00:15:18.960 that that's the price 00:15:18.960 -->
