00:04:03.520 --> 00:04:11.520 that are kind of being pulled back and forth between what they used to believe in terms of Judaism 00:04:11.520 --> 00:04:15.980 and now all those things being fulfilled in Christ. 00:04:16.860 --> 00:04:20.519 And the writer is trying to tell them Jesus is the fulfillment of the old. 00:04:20.600 --> 00:04:24.879 The old was good for its time, but it was pointing towards something greater. 00:04:25.439 --> 00:04:28.019 So Jesus offers a better covenant. 00:04:28.600 --> 00:04:30.360 He offers a better sacrifice. 00:04:30.780 --> 00:04:33.360 He is the eternal high priest. 00:04:33.519 --> 00:04:34.399 Et cetera. 00:04:34.740 --> 00:04:40.439 So, let me give you a word that will help you just in the Scripture in general, 00:04:40.579 --> 00:04:42.180 but especially in Hebrews. 00:04:43.279 --> 00:04:46.659 It helps us understand things in the Old Testament better. 00:04:47.620 --> 00:04:50.859 But it's a word that we use in theology called types. 00:04:51.979 --> 00:04:54.620 And it's from a Greek word that's in the Scripture, 00:04:54.859 --> 00:04:58.439 but the Greek word typos or typos, if you want to say it. 00:04:59.919 --> 00:05:00.479 Types. 00:05:01.620 --> 00:05:02.120 Right? 00:05:02.120 --> 00:05:03.019 And this is what it means. 00:05:03.019 --> 00:05:03.939 Let's take this in. 00:05:03.939 --> 00:05:10.740 A type was a special example, symbol, or picture that God designed beforehand 00:05:10.740 --> 00:05:14.620 and that he placed in history at an earlier point in time 00:05:14.620 --> 00:05:18.299 to point forward to a later, larger fulfillment. 00:05:18.300 --> 00:05:27.639 So God put something earlier in history that was supposed to foreshadow or point towards something greater and better in the future. 00:05:28.900 --> 00:05:31.520 And so the book of Hebrews is filled with this. 00:05:31.519 --> 00:05:40.319 The sacrificial system, the sacrificial system, the tabernacle, the priesthood, the Sabbath, all those things were pointing toward a larger, greater fulfillment in Christ. 00:05:40.319 --> 00:05:43.779 So he is the fulfillment of those things. 00:05:43.779 --> 00:05:46.860 He was the final sacrifice for our sins. 00:05:47.300 --> 00:05:50.459 And he is the great high priest and he is the Lord of the Sabbath. 00:05:50.459 --> 00:06:05.859 So, some of you, again, some of us, I think our congregation would be pretty good on this, but in case that's still in the back of your head, like, why should I care about high priests and sacrificial systems? 00:06:05.860 --> 00:06:14.879 Well, the point being, you need, and I need, we need a go-between between us and God. 00:06:15.040 --> 00:06:17.500 You cannot go to God on your own. 00:06:18.620 --> 00:06:23.220 You're in major trouble, and I would be in major trouble if we approach God on our own. 00:06:23.900 --> 00:06:34.520 You need someone to go as a mediator between you and God to represent you before God and to advocate before you. 00:06:35.860 --> 00:06:37.100 You have to have someone. 00:06:38.580 --> 00:06:47.840 And in the old covenant, the high priests were serving as a copy or a type of this, but they themselves fell short. 00:06:48.300 --> 00:06:53.240 They were pointing toward the ultimate mediator and high priest, Jesus Christ. 00:06:54.139 --> 00:06:58.819 He was the fulfillment of the Levitical priesthood and sacrificial system. 00:06:59.500 --> 00:07:00.639 So that's why you should care. 00:07:00.639 --> 00:07:05.319 You have to have a mediator between you and a holy God. 00:07:06.860 --> 00:07:16.099 Just as a theme for today, if you look at verse 9, and it says, 00:07:16.279 --> 00:07:22.219 And being made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey Him. 00:07:22.220 --> 00:07:31.740 So, Jesus Christ, as our great high priest, He is the source of eternal salvation. 00:07:32.440 --> 00:07:35.780 He's the cause or the author of our salvation. 00:07:36.920 --> 00:07:39.740 Salvation from judgment and the wrath of God. 00:07:39.880 --> 00:07:41.140 Salvation from suffering. 00:07:41.380 --> 00:07:44.000 Salvation from all the effects of sin. 00:07:44.720 --> future. 00:08:03.540 --> 00:08:20.820 So, what the writer is trying to do today is, again, he's bringing up this idea that Christ was the fulfillment of the priesthood that they saw in the Old Covenant that they'd be very familiar with. 00:08:21.580 --> 00:08:25.580 And today, it kind of focuses on the qualifications of such a man. 00:08:25.579 --> 00:08:32.919 What are the qualifications of such a man to be high priest, to represent you before a holy God? 00:08:34.220 --> 00:08:38.539 And first, we're kind of going to do like an A and B thing. 00:08:38.779 --> 00:08:41.559 And then, underneath that, there'll be some other things. 00:08:41.759 --> 00:08:46.679 But, you see, firstly, like A, the qualifications of an earthly high priest. 00:08:46.679 --> 00:08:50.139 So, the ones that did serve Israel. 00:08:51.039 --> 00:08:52.559 And we see these in the first few verses. 00:08:53.699 --> 00:08:57.099 Let's look down at chapter 5, verse 1. 00:08:57.099 --> 00:09:07.059 For every high priest chosen among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 00:09:07.859 --> 00:09:13.399 He can deal gently with the ignorant and the wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. 00:09:13.399 --> 00:09:22.340 Because of this, he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins, just as he does for those of the people. 00:10:02.759 And then also, we'll follow with, when we look at Jesus, who's the eternal high priest. 00:10:02.759 --> 00:10:05.080 So, first off, selection. 00:10:05.220 --> 00:10:07.340 So, how was an earthly priest selected? 00:10:08.480 --> 00:10:10.179 It was a very, very high honor. 00:10:10.639 --> 00:10:13.360 And it was filled with immense dignity. 00:10:14.379 --> 00:10:16.580 So much so, that you couldn't just run for office. 00:10:16.700 --> 00:10:18.759 No one could say, I want to be the high priest this year. 00:10:18.919 --> 00:10:26.379 They had to be called and chosen by God into that service, as we just read. 00:10:26.379 --> 00:10:33.740 So, these imperfect, sinful, flawed men were chosen by God to serve as high priest. 00:10:33.799 --> 00:10:38.159 Not because they deserved it, but only because of God's mercy. 00:10:39.659 --> 00:10:39.899 Right? 00:10:41.059 --> 00:10:49.539 And those who chose to try to elevate themselves to the office of high priest were in serious trouble. 00:10:50.240 --> 00:10:53.580 And this is the same boat we would be in if we tried to do this on our own. 00:10:53.580 --> 00:11:03.220 And so, develop some good fear, healthy fear and reverence for God through the Scripture. 00:11:04.540 --> 00:11:11.460 I remember being a young kid, and one of my favorite movies was the Indiana Jones series. 00:11:12.420 --> 00:11:14.800 And I actually watched the one in the movie theater. 00:11:15.840 --> 00:11:18.340 If I was old enough to get into it, I think I was. 00:11:18.420 --> 00:11:19.680 If I didn't, I snuck into it. 00:11:20.759 --> 00:11:22.500 It was the Raiders of the Lost Ark. 00:11:23.580 --> 00:11:30.759 And you just kind of saw this idea that anybody who crossed into this realm of trying to do something holy, they were remember that burning in my mind. 00:11:40.180 --> 00:11:43.520 And it produced like a holy fear, even just seeing that. 00:11:44.220 --> 00:11:46.020 But Scripture has tons of this stuff. Korah and Korah, 250 followers, assumed the priestly role by burning unauthorized incense. 00:12:02.740 --> 00:12:06.360 And God opened up the earth and swallowed them alive. 00:12:06.360 --> 00:12:08.680 Number 16. 00:12:10.480 --> 00:12:13.919 King Saul, if you remember, he was very impatient. 00:12:14.080 --> 00:12:19.039 He was waiting for Samuel to get there to do his priestly job of offering a sacrifice. 00:12:19.659 --> 00:12:26.240 He grew impatient, and he did the sacrifice himself as the king and was rebuked severely by Samuel. 00:12:26.240 --> 00:12:34.740 And because of that, God chose to tear him from his kingdom, to unthrone him, to end his reign in Israel. 00:12:36.399 --> 00:12:37.700 So not even a king. 00:12:38.539 --> 00:12:45.740 Then King Uzziah wrongly utilized a priestly censer, and God struck him with leprosy. 00:12:45.740 --> 00:12:53.860 So the point God is trying to make over and over is, do strictly as I've instructed. 00:12:54.100 --> 00:12:55.860 Don't try to bend the rules. 00:12:57.180 --> 00:13:00.840 Don't mess with my order, or you'll perish. 00:13:00.940 --> 00:13:02.000 That's what he's trying to say. 00:13:02.220 --> You had to be a living, breathing man. 00:13:50.440 --> 00:13:56.259 Earthly human priests were, they would stand on behalf of those they served. 00:13:56.360 --> 00:13:59.000 They were of the people and for the people. 00:14:00.160 --> 00:14:03.440 And it's kind of the same in modern pastoral ministry. 00:14:03.560 --> 00:14:06.060 You want to be able to relate to those that we serve. plate of gold going around it. 00:15:06.919 --> 00:15:11.699 And on it is the words in Hebrew, holy to Yahweh. 00:15:11.700 --> 00:15:16.220 And then you see this breastplate that they're wearing. 00:15:16.759 --> 00:15:18.680 It's called the breastplate of judgment. 00:15:19.540 --> 00:15:23.340 It has four rows and three columns. 00:15:24.740 --> 00:15:28.840 Each stone on that breastplate represents the tribes of Israel. 00:15:30.360 --> 00:15:35.540 Benjamin, Judah, Ephraim, Ishakar, on and on. 00:15:35.539 --> 00:15:41.939 And those garments, in a way, are designed to show these They were able to sympathize with those they serve. 00:16:16.080 --> 00:16:17.879 But in a different way than Jesus is, right? 00:16:18.580 --> 00:16:21.600 They can sympathize with those they serve sin. 00:16:27.379 --> 00:16:33.379 So that's how they can, in some way, sympathize with gentleness with those that they serve. 00:16:34.580 --> 00:16:42.159 And because they themselves were sinful, our text says they had to go in first and offer a sacrifice for themselves 00:16:42.159 --> 00:16:48.000 before turning around to come and offer sacrifices on behalf of the people. 00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:52.639 So, priests were, as it says in Leviticus, 00:16:54.200 --> 00:16:56.679 it is, excuse me, yeah, 00:16:56.879 --> 00:17:01.820 if it is the anointed priest who sins, thus bringing guilt --> 00:17:47.579 He would kill a bull, slaughter it, 00:17:48.859 --> 00:17:52.139 lay his hands on it and confess his sins to God. 00:17:52.140 --> 00:17:55.200 Then he would take the blood, which is, 00:17:55.740 --> 00:17:58.580 blood is symbolic of life, something that's living. 00:17:58.740 --> 00:18:00.540 If you take away blood, you don't have life. 00:18:01.080 --> 00:18:02.680 So, it was symbolic of that. 00:18:03.560 --> 00:18:06.040 He would take the blood of that bull 00:18:06.040 --> 00:18:09.120 into the holy place, 00:18:09.160 --> 00:18:11.140 which is that start of the Holies, 00:18:19.400 --> 00:18:22.780 and he would sprinkle the blood of that bull, 00:18:22.880 --> 00:18:24.680 that sacrifice, on the mercy seat, 00:18:25.960 --> 00:18:28.320 symbolically atoning for his own sins. 00:18:28.380 --> 00:18:32.019 And then he would sprinkle it seven more times before the mercy seat. 00:18:33.259 --> 00:18:35.900 And only after he had done that horrific act and sympathetically with those he served 00:18:47.119 --> 00:18:49.299 because he was very aware of his own sinfulness. 00:18:49.939 --> 00:18:51.659 That's how we can sympathize with people. pastor or women, 00:18:58.359 --> 00:18:59.639 if you're helping other women, 00:19:00.359 --> 00:19:01.139 or your children, 00:19:02.219 --> 00:19:04.359 or even in marriage, your husband, 00:19:05.019 --> 00:19:07.279 you have to be very aware of your own sinfulness 00:19:07.279 --> 00:19:09.119 before you can properly love somebody. 00:19:09.119 --> 00:19:13.919 The best evangelists I know are the ones that are most aware of their own sin 00:19:13.919 --> 00:19:19.379 because they communicate with humility and gentleness rather than arrogance. 00:19:20.539 --> 00:19:20.739 Right? 00:19:21.439 --> 00:19:26.399 So, these earthly priests were able to sympathize very well with those that they served, 00:19:26.459 --> 00:19:29.699 and they represented the people before God. 00:19:30.759 --> 00:19:32.119 But it was imperfect. 00:19:32.919 --> 00:19:35.839 It was pointing towards a greater fulfillment. 00:19:35.839 --> 00:19:38.220 It was pointing towards Jesus, 00:19:38.399 --> 00:19:41.539 the eternal, perfect, sympathetic high priest. 00:19:42.779 --> 00:19:46.299 So, if you go back to Hebrews 5, 00:19:46.339 --> 00:19:47.299 if you've turned away from that, 00:19:47.399 --> 00:19:48.559 but back in Hebrews 5, 00:19:49.299 --> 00:19:50.480 the second part of this, 00:19:50.619 --> 00:19:55.000 B, is the qualifications of the eternal high priest. 00:19:56.179 --> 00:19:58.619 You see this in verses 5 through 10. 00:20:00.259 --> 00:20:01.039 It says, 00:20:01.039 --> 00:20:05.199 So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest,
