important. 00:00:34.320 --> 00:00:43.019 And someone very important drags the someone that owes bags and bags of gold and money to court. 00:00:44.320 --> 00:00:50.159 And the servant throws himself on the mercy of the court. 00:00:51.159 --> 00:00:56.240 And the important person forgives the entire debt. 00:00:57.000 --> 00:01:05.460 And the unforgiving servant walks out of there a free man. 00:01:05.459 --> 00:01:12.179 But then he encounters someone that he knows that owes him money. 00:01:12.699 --> 00:01:16.439 And instead of bags of gold, it's just a pittance, some small amount of money. 00:01:17.579 --> 00:01:24.639 And he chokes the man and demands repayment and wants to press full charges. 00:01:24.640 --> 00:01:34.500 And of course, the important man hears of this and gets very angry and throws the unforgiving servant into jail. 00:01:34.579 --> 00:01:43.480 And the reason I love this parable so much is because it's about sin. 00:01:43.480 --> 00:01:48.900 And it's about underestimating sin. 00:01:49.060 --> 00:01:57.280 It's about undervaluing the debt that we owe to God. 00:01:58.939 --> 00:02:05.920 And tonight we have a passage that's all about sin. 00:02:05.920 --> 00:02:11.300 We're going to be looking at 2 Samuel chapter 11. 00:02:11.640 --> 00:02:14.300 It's the famous passage about David and Bathsheba. 00:02:18.099 --> 00:02:19.520 A quick note, by the way. 00:02:20.240 --> 00:02:23.000 Next week's passage is chapter 12. 00:02:23.180 --> 00:02:25.300 And that's where all the repentance happens. 00:02:25.939 --> 00:02:29.219 So this week David was not just an ordinary Israelite. 00:03:17.639 --> 00:03:19.020 He was God's anointed. 00:03:19.020 --> 00:03:29.740 He was specially chosen by God and called by God to a particular task. 00:03:29.740 --> 00:03:36.820 And he had several responsibilities as God's anointed and as the king. 00:03:37.480 --> 00:03:42.200 Such as to save the people from their enemies. 00:03:43.240 --> 00:03:45.840 And to protect the people. 00:03:46.900 --> 00:03:53.200 And to establish and uphold God's law in the land. 00:03:53.199 --> 00:03:55.079 And to judge the people. 00:03:56.699 --> 00:04:00.500 The kings back then, they would hear people's cases. 00:04:00.780 --> 00:04:03.699 And they would discern between people's arguments. 00:04:03.959 --> 00:04:05.819 And they would also execute justice. 00:04:05.819 --> 00:04:14.479 When David was faithful, the people were blessed. 00:04:16.180 --> 00:04:21.360 And when David was unfaithful, the people suffered. 00:04:22.659 --> spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab and his servants with him and all Israel. 00:04:46.120 --> 00:04:48.879 And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Graba. 00:04:49.699 --> 00:04:51.959 But David remained at Jerusalem. 00:04:53.480 --> 00:04:59.339 It happened late one afternoon when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king's adultery with her. 00:09:47.379 --> 00:09:48.740 Betraying a close friend. 00:09:50.399 --> 00:09:51.779 Murdering innocent men. 00:09:53.259 --> 00:09:55.320 Commanding other people to commit sin. 00:09:56.720 --> 00:09:59.860 And then belittling the whole thing as no big deal. 00:10:02.480 --> 00:10:04.080 And you know, when we read it, we say, 00:10:04.220 --> 00:10:06.840 Ah, these are the real sins. 00:10:07.600 --> 00:10:09.980 These are the big ones. 00:10:11.420 --> 00:10:16.580 Adultery and murder and plotting and scheming and lying and covering it up. 00:10:16.879 --> 00:10:20.120 And this is what, now we're talking. 00:10:20.259 --> 00:10:21.240 This is real sin. 00:10:21.240 --> 00:10:28.340 But I'd like us to take a closer look, a deeper look tonight. 00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:40.259 The first move of the heart in sin 00:10:40.259 --> 00:10:44.299 Is a dethroning of God. 00:10:44.299 --> 00:10:50.080 Off of his rightful position in our hearts. 00:10:50.659 --> 00:10:52.559 As our number one love. 00:10:53.899 --> 00:10:57.360 And enthroning ourselves. 00:10:57.360 --> 00:11:06.779 So to use familiar language from 2 Samuel, 00:11:08.180 --> 00:11:11.700 David has become a man after David's own heart. 00:11:11.700 --> 00:11:31.040 He has stopped loving God in this period of time. 00:11:31.039 --> 00:11:35.699 And is now living by a different set of values. 00:11:35.700 --> 00:11:45.140 All sin is vertical first before it's horizontal. 00:11:45.139 --> 00:11:54.679 And by that I mean all sin is sin against God first before it's horizontal. 00:11:54.919 --> 00:11:57.860 And that's an interesting thing to observe when we have a passage like this. 00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:04.340 Because it's all these sins as they come at us in the passage are horizontal sins. 00:12:04.919 --> 00:12:06.240 It's lust. 00:12:07.019 --> 00:12:08.360 He sees. 00:12:08.620 --> 00:12:09.399 He takes. 00:12:09.399 --> 00:12:12.039 It's adultery. 00:12:12.879 --> 00:12:16.939 It's pride. 00:12:17.039 --> 00:12:18.419 And now I have to cover it up. 00:12:20.379 --> 00:12:23.240 And all these things are happening against other people. 00:12:24.100 --> 00:12:28.500 But it's interesting if we look in chapter 12 and we see the way God responds. 00:12:30.740 --> 00:12:32.000 I'm just going to read a couple. 00:12:32.220 --> 00:12:34.740 I'm going to paraphrase a couple verses from chapter 12. 00:12:34.740 --> 00:12:45.399 And God says through Nathan, 00:12:45.899 --> 00:12:50.659 By what you have done, you have utterly scorned the Lord. 00:12:50.659 --> 00:13:05.000 And David says in Psalm 51, his famous Psalm of repentance, he says regarding the sin, 00:13:05.459 --> 00:13:12.000 Against you, you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight. 00:13:12.000 --> 00:13:22.080 And I'd like us to see that not only for David, but for all of us, this is the dynamic of sin. 00:13:22.200 --> 00:13:24.659 This is how sin works. 00:13:25.279 --> 00:13:34.820 If we go back to the law, if we go back to what God wants from us, here's how Jesus puts it. 00:13:34.820 --> 00:13:41.540 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 00:13:43.340 --> 00:13:45.540 This is the first and great commandment. 00:13:46.740 --> 00:13:48.340 And a second is like it. 00:13:48.460 --> 00:13:50.200 You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 00:13:50.760 --> 00:13:55.740 On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets. 00:13:55.740 --> 00:14:03.940 In other words, we love God. 00:14:05.039 --> 00:14:07.419 We see his goodness. 00:14:07.860 --> 00:14:12.360 We see his, for Christians, we see his grace. 00:14:13.060 --> 00:14:16.740 We see his undeserved mercy and love for us. 00:14:16.740 --> 00:14:27.740 And then we turn to other people and we live out of that paradigm of love and grace. 00:14:29.019 --> 00:14:34.180 So all sin in its first instance is against God. 00:14:34.259 --> 00:14:42.039 And that's why I think that when we hear Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, when we hear Jesus say things like this, 00:14:42.039 --> 00:14:46.959 when he says, you say it's sin to commit adultery. 00:14:47.159 --> 00:14:50.779 I say it's sin to even look at a woman lustfully at all. 00:14:52.839 --> 00:14:55.179 You say it's sin to commit murder. 00:14:56.120 --> 00:15:00.879 I say it's sin to even be angry with your brother and call him a fool. 00:15:02.360 --> 00:15:04.439 Now, how is Jesus saying that? 00:15:04.639 --> 00:15:05.679 What is the dynamic? 00:15:05.679 --> 00:15:20.599 If you are in a state of heart to look at a woman and lust, you haven't done anything, but you've lusted. 00:15:21.359 --> 00:15:29.919 God has been dethroned off out of your heart in those times. 00:15:29.919 --> 00:15:40.719 You have taken God from his rightful place as king of your heart, love of your life. 00:15:41.019 --> 00:15:45.799 You've put him down and you've enthroned yourself. 00:15:45.799 --> 00:16:04.659 If that makes you a little uncomfortable, the ramifications of that are pretty dramatic. 00:16:04.659 --> 00:16:23.100 Because the core of the sin is that we've take the God of the universe who created everything out of nothing, 00:16:23.100 --> 00:16:32.300 who is all-powerful, all-knowing, infinite, eternal, 00:16:33.500 --> 00:16:40.659 on top of that gracious, loving, merciful, kind. 00:16:40.659 --> 00:16:50.459 And we have put him in a position subordinate to us. 00:16:52.039 --> 00:16:53.459 If I can put it that way. 00:16:53.459 --> 00:16:57.600 When you pull God down off of his throne and erect yourself, 00:16:58.240 --> 00:17:02.019 you are putting God in a subordinate position to you. 00:17:02.019 --> 00:17:08.420 And what I want to argue, what I want to try to get us to think about tonight, 00:17:08.980 --> 00:17:16.539 is that that sin is the sin. 00:17:17.160 --> 00:17:18.599 That's the root of it. 00:17:19.059 --> 00:17:21.720 That's the heart of sin right there. 00:17:22.400 --> 00:17:30.599 Then it blossoms into actual evil that we do. 00:17:32.019 --> 00:17:42.500 And I think that if we don't see that, we're on the path to undervaluing sin. 00:17:42.700 --> 00:17:48.279 We're on the path to being able to read a passage like we just read and go, 00:17:49.279 --> 00:17:58.420 that's not me because I don't go that far. 00:17:58.779 --> 00:18:00.900 And we know we're not supposed to say that. 00:18:00.900 --> 00:18:02.720 I know no one's sitting in this room. 00:18:04.660 --> 00:18:09.540 But deep in our hearts, we minimize the standard. 00:18:09.900 --> 00:18:15.759 It's an inclination of our heart to pull the standard down so that we squeak under it. 00:18:16.180 --> few minutes about the consequences of sin. 00:18:48.619 --> 00:18:50.220 The consequences of sin. 00:18:50.399 --> 00:18:57.359 Here again, I think, so often what we look at is David's and Bathsheba's baby died, 00:18:57.359 --> 00:18:59.220 okay, as a result of this. 00:19:00.079 --> 00:19:02.940 David's whole career now takes a turn for the worse. 00:19:02.940 --> 00:19:09.160 David starts making other mistakes, sinful errors. 00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:14.480 He begins, his rule begins to spiral down. 00:19:14.480 --> 00:19:22.500 God has, as we'll see next week in chapter 12, 00:19:23.240 --> 00:19:30.400 has responded by removing some of the blessings that he'd been giving to David 00:19:30.400 --> 00:19:37.079 and enacting some consequences for David that are temporal, 00:19:37.940 --> 00:19:40.279 that are in the here and now, as it were. 00:19:40.279 --> 00:19:47.079 In fact, as a result of David's sin, 00:19:47.420 --> 00:19:49.339 the people end up suffering. 00:19:50.279 --> 00:19:53.299 The people that David represents, they end up suffering 00:19:53.299 --> 00:19:59.200 because down the road, David starts making other bad choices and sinning. 00:20:00.920 --> 00:20:04.139 And further down the road, David's descendants, 00:20:04.460 --> 00:20:07.559 not too far after David, the wheels come off. 00:20:07.559 --> 00:20:20.720 And even though God had promised to bless David 00:20:20.720 --> 00:20:26.059 and set his steadfast covenant love on David 00:20:26.059 --> 00:20:29.799 and had promised that an heir of David would be on the throne forever, 00:20:31.019 --> 00:20:34.139 even though that promise was there in chapter 7, 00:20:34.140 --> 00:20:39.300 just three chapters later, four chapters later, 00:20:39.880 --> 00:20:44.420 we have this fall. 00:20:50.740 --> 00:20:56.380 And the descendants of David don't last long in their faithfulness to God. 00:20:56.380 --> 00:21:01.560 In fact, as we know, Israel ends up in exile. 00:21:01.700 --> 00:21:04.640 And there is not only no Davidic king on the throne, 00:21:04.720 --> 00:21:06.120 there's no king on the throne at all. 00:21:06.200 --> 00:21:07.620 The people are dispersed. 00:21:10.740 --> 00:21:15.600 Now, what I would like us to be careful about 00:21:15.599 --> 00:21:23.639 is that we do not view the temporal discipline of God on David 00:21:23.639 --> 00:21:30.199 as David paying for the sins that he committed in chapter 11. 00:21:33.339 --> 00:21:37.240 The temporal judgments of God 00:21:37.240 --> 00:21:42.679 are never payment for sin. 00:21:42.680 --> 00:21:47.140 The reason is because no temporal punishment 00:21:47.140 --> 00:21:52.640 can cover the sin of us dethroning God 00:21:52.640 --> 00:21:54.740 from his place as God of the universe. 00:21:55.600 --> 00:21:57.779 Us, created human beings, 00:21:57.940 --> 00:22:00.180 rising up in rebellion against God 00:22:00.180 --> 00:22:02.660 and putting him down. 00:22:04.840 --> 00:22:08.460 None of these temporal disciplines or punishments 00:22:08.460 --> 00:22:09.880 pay for that sin. 00:22:10.000 --> 00:22:11.080 Those sins are out there. 00:22:11.079 --> 00:22:18.000 God 00:23:33.300 --> 00:23:36.620 how is David survive this? 00:23:36.619 --> 00:23:36.959 Like, 00:23:37.079 --> 00:23:39.379 how is it 00:23:39.379 --> 00:23:44.319 that David 00:23:44.319 --> 00:23:53.379 goes on to be 00:23:53.379 --> 00:23:55.559 blessed by God, 00:23:55.679 --> 00:23:57.279 continued to be loved by God, 00:23:57.459 --> 00:23:58.619 established by God, 00:24:00.039 -->
