00:00:33.659 Now we know that faith is at the very centre of the lives of the people of God, and when 00:00:33.659 --> 00:00:40.039 we read this letter we begin to understand something of the challenges faced by faith 00:00:40.039 --> 00:00:41.980 in this world. 00:00:41.980 --> 00:00:48.100 We come to chapter number 11 and we have a list of those people who were faithful, but 00:00:48.100 --> 00:00:53.359 right along through the letter there are those who are close to losing their faith because 00:00:53.359 --> 00:00:57.399 their faith is not working as it should. 00:00:57.399 --> 00:01:03.019 And I'm sure for all of us here together this evening that one of our main problems in the 00:01:03.019 --> 00:01:09.219 Christian life is that our faith does not work as it should. 00:01:09.219 --> 00:01:15.980 And here in this letter as we come to this chapter we can see the verses before us as 00:01:15.980 --> 00:01:22.560 a way in which the writer wants to encourage the hearers of the letter with the example 00:01:22.560 --> 00:01:28.659 of the faith of the Lord Jesus and how that faith is working. 00:01:28.659 --> 00:01:34.920 And that is part of his great objective in the letter to highlight to them the significance 00:01:34.920 --> 00:01:42.900 and the importance of Jesus, the Son of God, as their Saviour and as the Great High Priest. 00:01:42.900 --> 00:01:49.560 And in highlighting that, the writer does make it clear that there are two special emphases 00:01:49.560 --> 00:01:58.000 with regard to the Lord Jesus that he is faithful in his service of God and that he is also faithful 00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:00.780 in his service to his people. 00:02:00.780 --> 00:02:02.320 So we want to think of faith this evening. 00:02:02.320 --> 00:02:04.820 We want to think of the faithfulness of the Lord Jesus. 00:02:04.819 --> 00:02:11.000 We want to think of Jesus and the example of his faith and how it was working and to think 00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:18.139 especially of faith and the inspiration of the prayer life of the Lord Jesus. 00:02:18.139 --> 00:02:25.879 We see first of all that there is prayer in verse number seven and it is happening in the 00:02:25.879 --> 00:02:27.199 days of his flesh. 00:02:27.199 --> 00:02:34.199 In other words, the days in which Jesus spent here in this world, the whole of his life, the 00:02:34.199 --> 00:02:40.699 days of his flesh, the days of his worldly and earthly experience, all of these days, Jesus 00:02:40.699 --> 00:02:44.199 offered up prayers and supplications. 00:02:44.199 --> 00:02:50.979 It gives to us a sense of two particular things. 00:02:50.979 --> 00:02:57.359 Prayers give to us that the sense of being in lack or of being in need. 00:02:57.359 --> 00:03:03.659 And sometimes we can journey on through life and we are not too much aware of what we lack 00:03:03.659 --> 00:03:06.199 or too much aware of what we need. 00:03:06.199 --> 00:03:12.199 But as soon as we are face to face with what we lack and what we need, if we have grace in 00:03:12.199 --> 00:03:17.419 our hearts, then faith moves us to pray. 00:03:17.419 --> 00:03:24.479 And interestingly and perhaps surprisingly, the reference here is to Jesus in the days 00:03:24.479 --> 00:03:31.759 of his life here in this world, that he was aware of a particular lack and of a particular 00:03:31.759 --> 00:03:35.439 need and because of that he prayed. 00:03:35.439 --> 00:03:45.280 And along with that, there is the idea of supplication, which is more specific than prayer in general, 00:03:45.280 --> 00:03:51.960 which focuses upon a specific need and which highlights the way in which definite help is 00:03:51.960 --> 00:03:52.659 required. 00:03:52.659 --> 00:04:00.879 And it draws our attention to the fact that when these words are written, they are specific 00:04:00.879 --> 00:04:06.939 to one particular need at one particular time in the experience of the Lord Jesus. 00:04:06.939 --> 00:04:13.879 And in pointing us to that one particular time and that one particular need, it gives to us 00:04:13.879 --> 00:04:19.100 an example of the way in which Jesus prayed all of his life. 00:04:19.100 --> 00:04:28.100 And when we do read these verses as we go through them, we can remind ourselves that they are descriptive 00:04:28.100 --> 00:04:33.100 of the experience of the Lord Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:04:33.100 --> 00:04:39.020 And we saw something of that on the Lord's Day, the way in which Jesus was in the garden and 00:04:39.020 --> 00:04:40.020 he was tested. 00:04:40.020 --> 00:04:46.000 And here are words which give us another angle and another viewpoint of what Jesus was going 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:48.760 through in the garden. 00:04:48.760 --> 00:04:54.100 But at the moment we're looking at the way in which there is prayer because there is a 00:04:54.100 --> 00:05:00.439 sense of need and because there is a requirement for help in a particular way. 00:05:00.439 --> 00:05:07.939 And it shows to us the way in which Jesus lived his life in communion with God. 00:05:07.939 --> 00:05:14.639 And this evening, if we have faith, this should be typical of our own lives. 00:05:14.639 --> 00:05:18.420 This is how faith works on our journey. 00:05:18.420 --> 00:05:23.420 Perhaps even today itself, suddenly we are aware of a great need. 00:05:23.420 --> 00:05:27.180 Suddenly we're aware of something that we could not manage ourselves. 00:05:27.180 --> 00:05:34.319 And our hearts, perhaps without anything vocal taking place, in our hearts we are reaching 00:05:34.319 --> 00:05:35.680 out to God. 00:05:35.680 --> 00:05:41.680 And we are doing so because we need specific help in this specific moment. 00:05:41.680 --> 00:05:50.560 And so our lives, as we look back, they are dotted with moments like that when prayer reflects 00:05:50.560 --> 00:05:51.319 our faith. 00:05:51.319 --> 00:05:57.939 Prayer arises because of our communion with God and we are looking for God's help. 00:05:57.939 --> 00:06:07.579 prayer arises because of our communion with God. 00:06:07.579 --> 00:06:08.860 And we see that the depths of the of the anguish of the Lord Jesus here in these verses with 00:06:08.860 --> 00:06:11.180 loud cries and tears. 00:06:11.180 --> 00:06:16.500 There is a real depth of distress. 00:06:16.500 --> 00:06:23.540 We saw in Matthew 26, the way in which Jesus was in agony, the way in which he was sorrowful, 00:06:23.540 --> 00:06:28.300 even up to the point of death, the way in which he was distressed. 00:06:28.300 --> 00:06:36.060 And to the extent that that Luke reminds us in chapter 22 that in that moment of distress 00:06:36.060 --> 00:06:44.620 and of testing that his sweat was like great drops of blood falling to the ground. 00:06:44.620 --> 00:06:54.500 And there was an intensity to his experience and to his prayer that is probably unique to himself 00:06:54.500 --> 00:06:57.240 in that moment of great need. 00:06:57.240 --> 00:07:04.560 His whole being wrestling out to the object of his faith, the God who was his father and 00:07:04.560 --> 00:07:13.139 who is his father, reaching out to that God because of one particular reason in this case. 00:07:13.139 --> 00:07:24.560 And that reason being God's ability to help him in his specific need. 00:07:24.560 --> 00:07:31.879 To him who was able to save him from death. 00:07:31.879 --> 00:07:38.819 We saw on the Lord's day, the way in which Jesus is exploring the possibility of it. 00:07:38.819 --> 00:07:42.060 If it is possible, Lord, let this cup pass from me. 00:07:42.060 --> 00:07:48.040 There is a sense of exploring beyond the present boundaries. 00:07:48.040 --> 00:07:56.579 But here there is the conviction that what the Lord Jesus needs is possible to God. 00:07:56.579 --> 00:08:03.959 And the power, the ability that God has is to save him from death. 00:08:03.959 --> 00:08:11.379 To rescue him from the very thing that is causing his distress. 00:08:11.379 --> 00:08:16.019 And when he is persuaded that God is able to save him from death. 00:08:16.019 --> 00:08:20.579 First of all, let us think about what that does not say. 00:08:20.579 --> 00:08:26.079 And this does not say that Jesus was praying that he wouldn't die. 00:08:26.079 --> 00:08:28.419 Jesus knew that that's where he was going. 00:08:28.419 --> 00:08:34.419 Jesus knew that the time would come when he would give himself to death. 00:08:34.419 --> 00:08:39.919 So we don't think for a moment that when he prayed to God was able to save him from death. 00:08:39.919 --> 00:08:47.259 That he was praying to be saved from the status of being dead. 00:08:47.259 --> 00:08:50.500 Because that's what he came to. 00:08:50.500 --> 00:08:58.299 But what it does mean is that he was praying for the one who was able to save him from the penalty of death. 00:08:58.299 --> 00:09:02.220 From the experience of the forsakenness of Calvary. 00:09:02.220 --> 00:09:08.879 And rescuing him from the darkness into which he must descend. 00:09:08.879 --> 00:09:12.939 His mission 00:09:44.680 And praying that in that Abbas that he wouldn't be lost. 00:09:44.680 --> 00:09:48.140 Able to save him from death. 00:09:48.140 --> 00:09:57.360 And at the same time able to save him not
