00:01:20.819 You'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus and his life and his death and his resurrection. 00:01:21.200 --> 00:01:24.480 And we come today to the second half of Mark chapter 5. 00:01:24.659 --> 00:01:29.400 You'll remember the last two weeks we've had these two stories that were pairs that went together. 00:01:29.780 --> 00:01:32.980 The first one was Jesus' power and control over nature. 00:01:33.539 --> 00:01:38.680 And the second one last week was Jesus' power and control over evil and demonic forces. 00:01:39.180 --> 00:01:41.140 This week we come against something interesting. 00:01:41.140 --> 00:01:46.299 We have what might be called a sandwich or a bookend or a split screen, 00:01:46.420 --> 00:01:48.739 which is a way of saying we have two stories. 00:01:49.120 --> 00:01:51.040 One wraps around the other. 00:01:51.579 --> 00:01:54.379 And so it's a way that Mark is putting these two things together. 00:01:54.719 --> 00:01:58.099 We have the bread of the story, which is about this man named Jairus, 00:01:58.240 --> 00:01:59.719 whose daughter needs to be healed. 00:02:00.140 --> 00:02:03.340 That story gets split in half and there's a story in the middle 00:02:03.340 --> 00:02:07.659 about this woman who needs to be healed from 12 years of bleeding. 00:02:07.659 --> 00:02:09.719 And when we run into something like this in the Bible, 00:02:09.719 --> 00:02:12.840 when we hit up against a sandwich, it is not by accident. 00:02:12.960 --> 00:02:16.659 It is something extremely intentional on the part of the narrator 00:02:16.659 --> 00:02:21.199 to connect these two stories to teach us something we would not learn otherwise 00:02:21.199 --> 00:02:22.979 if they were apart. 00:02:23.400 --> 00:02:26.280 And so we're going to do both of these stories together this morning, 00:02:26.340 --> 00:02:28.620 which means we're going to have a slightly longer passage. 00:02:29.060 --> 00:02:33.159 It also means I'm going to say something, not everything, 00:02:34.099 --> 00:02:37.000 because we're handling two stories at the same time. 00:02:37.000 --> 00:02:41.879 And so our focus, our strategy going in is we're going to look at what we learn 00:02:41.879 --> 00:02:44.400 by the fact that these are both together, 00:02:44.939 --> 00:02:47.740 which means we're not going to talk about every detail of stories raise all kinds of interesting issues. 00:02:55.719 --> 00:02:57.539 But as you listen this morning and as I read, 00:02:57.620 --> 00:02:59.539 I'm going to ask you to think about this question. 00:02:59.939 --> 00:03:02.240 Why are these two stories placed together? 00:03:02.240 --> 00:03:08.420 What is it that we learn from the two of them wrapped around each other 00:03:08.420 --> 00:03:11.500 that we wouldn't learn if we read each of them separately? 00:03:11.960 --> 00:03:14.780 And our focus is going to be two different questions. 00:03:14.920 --> 00:03:16.140 I bet you can't guess what they are. 00:03:17.020 --> 00:03:18.780 Question one, who is Jesus? 00:03:19.439 --> 00:03:21.879 Question two, how do we respond to him? 00:03:22.240 --> 00:03:24.879 And so with remember that this is God's word. 00:03:31.400 --> 00:03:35.439 And God tells us that his word is more precious than gold, 00:03:35.580 --> 00:03:38.420 even the finest gold, and it's sweeter than honey, 00:03:38.640 --> 00:03:41.520 even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb. 00:03:42.140 --> 00:03:45.219 And so that's why we read now, starting at verse 21. 00:03:45.219 --> 00:03:49.800 00:07:24.439 --> 00:07:27.279 we are back to the area of Capernaum, 00:07:27.360 --> 00:07:29.740 which means we finished our little incursion 00:07:29.740 --> 00:07:31.740 over into Gentile territory, 00:07:31.740 --> 00:07:33.079 which we saw last week. 00:07:33.120 --> 00:07:34.819 And in verse 21, we see again, 00:07:34.939 --> 00:07:36.040 we're beside the sea, 00:07:36.399 --> 00:07:38.639 which is this setting that we've become familiar with. 00:07:38.680 --> 00:07:41.379 It seems to be a common location for Jesus. 00:07:41.600 --> 00:07:45.159 Perhaps he's using the sea again as this natural sound system 00:07:45.159 --> 00:07:48.480 where he's able to speak out and be heard by a large crowd. 00:07:48.959 --> 00:07:50.659 And we find here as he comes, 00:07:50.659 --> 00:07:51.500 verse 22, 00:07:51.500 --> 00:07:54.959 one of the rulers of the synagogue comes up to Jesus. 00:07:55.860 --> 00:07:59.259 Now, this should be probably the ruler of the same synagogue 00:07:59.259 --> 00:08:02.100 we saw Jesus preaching at in Capernaum earlier 00:08:02.100 --> 00:08:03.540 in the Gospel of Mark, 00:08:03.720 --> 00:08:06.100 but this is an unlikely candidate. 00:08:07.339 --> 00:08:09.839 And so there's a sense in which we should be surprised, 00:08:09.839 --> 00:08:12.899 and there's a sense in which this is to be expected. 00:08:13.180 --> 00:08:15.459 We should be surprised on the one hand 00:08:15.459 --> 00:08:17.199 that this is the ruler of the synagogue. 00:08:17.199 --> 00:08:19.279 The Jewish leaders, as we've seen, 00:08:19.379 --> 00:08:21.620 are not exactly on Jesus' side. 00:08:22.219 --> 00:08:24.240 In fact, Jesus presents something of a threat 00:08:24.240 --> 00:08:26.259 to their power and their identity. 00:08:26.399 --> 00:08:27.519 So that's the surprise. 00:08:28.459 --> 00:08:29.339 On the other hand, 00:08:29.399 --> 00:08:32.100 this is completely to be expected for this reason. 00:08:32.919 --> 00:08:36.039 Desperation is a great motivator. 00:08:37.039 --> 00:08:39.419 Desperation is a great equalizer. 00:08:39.419 --> 00:08:43.339 This man's daughter is at death. 00:08:43.559 --> 00:08:45.059 When you're in dire need, 00:08:45.120 --> 00:08:47.639 it matters less and less who's on your side. 00:08:48.179 --> 00:08:50.379 It matters more and more who can help. 00:08:51.579 --> 00:08:52.639 And so in that sense, 00:08:52.699 --> 00:08:54.939 it's exactly what we would be expecting, 00:08:55.079 --> 00:08:56.519 that this man would run to Jesus. 00:08:56.659 --> 00:08:58.919 We know that need and desperation 00:08:58.919 --> 00:09:00.360 levels the playing field. 00:09:00.459 --> 00:09:03.019 There are those who would come to Jesus 00:09:03.019 --> 00:09:06.759 only where they're in these extreme dire straits. 00:09:06.759 --> 00:09:10.120 And so we're in this unusual situation 00:09:10.120 --> 00:09:11.419 in this ruler of the synagogues 00:09:11.419 --> 00:09:12.500 coming up to Jesus. 00:09:13.279 --> 00:09:14.460 And by my count, 00:09:14.500 --> 00:09:16.379 as we look back over the gospel of Mark 00:09:16.379 --> 00:09:17.819 that we've seen so far, 00:09:18.019 --> 00:09:21.519 there are six people that Jesus has either healed 00:09:21.519 --> 00:09:23.279 or cast a demon out of. 00:09:23.679 --> 00:09:25.819 Now I'm wondering if you can name 00:09:25.819 --> 00:09:27.080 any of those six people, 00:09:27.159 --> 00:09:28.740 if you remember from the previous weeks. 00:09:30.759 --> 00:09:33.480 You can't because we weren't told their names. 00:09:34.700 --> 00:09:36.480 Not a single one of them. 00:09:36.920 --> 00:09:39.080 Last week, we found out the name of the demon 00:09:39.080 --> 00:09:39.840 was Legion. 00:09:40.220 --> 00:09:41.259 That's the name of the demon, 00:09:41.420 --> 00:09:42.659 not the man who was cured. 00:09:42.740 --> 00:09:45.320 We have no idea what his name is. 00:09:45.360 --> 00:09:47.279 And when we see a pattern break 00:09:47.279 --> 00:09:48.820 as we're reading a story in the Bible, 00:09:49.060 --> 00:09:50.720 that should raise our attention. 00:09:50.840 --> 00:09:51.800 We should ask ourselves, 00:09:52.220 --> 00:09:54.279 why is this detail suddenly changing? 00:09:54.379 --> 00:09:56.039 We didn't need to know the name 00:09:56.039 --> 00:09:58.039 of the six people who came before 00:09:58.039 --> 00:09:59.500 from the very beginning of the gospel. 00:09:59.920 --> 00:10:01.639 Suddenly, it's important that we know 00:10:01.639 --> 00:10:03.740 that this guy's name --> 00:10:28.639 to explain the purity laws 00:10:28.639 --> 00:10:29.480 from the Old Testament. 00:10:29.480 --> 00:10:31.899 And so as we go here, 00:10:31.940 --> 00:10:33.399 I'm gonna talk in terms of COVID 00:10:33.399 --> 00:10:35.420 so you understand what we're dealing with. 00:10:35.820 --> 00:10:37.220 And as I talk about this, 00:10:37.440 --> 00:10:39.940 I know everyone's got their political opinions 00:10:39.940 --> 00:10:40.879 about COVID, okay? 00:10:41.860 --> 00:10:45.200 Whether you have opinions about masks or no mask, 00:10:45.259 --> 00:10:46.560 whether it's serious or not serious, 00:10:46.639 --> 00:10:48.320 whether you'd have a vaccine or not have a vaccine, 00:10:48.560 --> 00:10:50.480 just please put all of that to the side. 00:10:51.019 --> happens if you're around someone 00:11:19.200 --> 00:11:21.120 who later is tested positive for COVID? 00:11:21.220 --> 00:11:22.820 Well, if you were less than six feet 00:11:22.820 --> 00:11:25.460 and you interacted for a certain amount of time, 00:11:25.520 --> 00:11:26.680 maybe if you gave them a hug, 00:11:26.679 --> 00:11:28.639 you're now considered exposed, 00:11:28.739 --> 00:11:30.659 which means you are now unclean. 00:11:31.759 --> 00:11:34.519 So unclean people can make other people unclean. 00:11:34.859 --> 00:11:36.439 Principle two, there's a separation. 00:11:36.899 --> 00:11:38.099 Once you're unclean, 00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:40.339 you're supposed to remove yourself from other people 00:11:40.339 --> 00:11:42.059 so you don't infect them as well. 00:11:42.299 --> 00:11:44.059 If you have COVID, you're supposed to quarantine. 00:11:44.559 --> 00:11:46.559 It's less true now, but if you were exposed, 00:11:46.679 --> 00:11:48.239 you were also supposed to quarantine 00:11:48.239 --> 00:11:49.459 for a certain amount of time 00:11:49.459 --> 00:11:51.699 to make sure you didn't make anyone else sick. 00:11:52.559 --> 00:11:54.439 So you can make other people unclean. 00:11:54.440 --> 00:11:57.280 You have to quarantine or separate yourself. 00:11:57.380 --> 00:12:00.100 And then there's a third element to cleanliness laws, 00:12:00.260 --> 00:12:02.480 and that is there's a way to purify yourself. 00:12:02.740 --> 00:12:05.460 There's a process by which you can make yourself clean. 00:12:05.900 --> 00:12:08.020 We know that process is twofold. 00:12:08.160 --> 00:12:09.920 Either you get your negative test, 00:12:10.380 --> 00:12:13.160 so you can prove to everyone you're clean once again, 00:12:13.740 --> 00:12:16.580 or you quarantine for a certain amount of time, right? 00:12:16.580 --> 00:12:19.280 That's your process to know 00:12:19.280 --> 00:12:21.820 that you have finished your time of uncleanness. 00:12:21.940 --> 00:12:22.820 You're pure now. 00:12:23.139 --> 00:12:25.379 You're no longer going to infect other people. 00:12:26.080 --> 00:12:28.820 So we've sort of lived this reality 00:12:28.820 --> 00:12:30.080 for the last couple of years 00:12:30.080 --> 00:12:31.620 where it's intuitive for us 00:12:31.620 --> 00:12:35.060 in a way it would not have been, say, back in 2019. 00:12:35.940 --> 00:12:39.200 In the Old Testament, it wasn't necessarily COVID, obviously, 00:12:39.320 --> 00:12:40.820 but there were all sorts of things 00:12:40.820 --> 00:12:41.960 that could make you unclean. 00:12:42.580 --> 00:12:44.259 And if you became unclean, 00:12:44.259 --> 00:12:46.259 you had the potential, just like we've talked about, 00:12:46.319 --> 00:12:47.679 to make other people unclean. 00:12:47.740 --> 00:12:49.700 There was this factor of separating yourself 00:12:49.700 --> 00:12:51.439 from the community for a while. 00:12:51.740 --> 00:12:54.159 There was a process of making yourself clean again. 00:12:54.559 --> 00:12:55.899 In fact, that's what we read about, 00:12:56.039 --> 00:12:59.120 John read for us in Leviticus chapter 15. 00:12:59.460 --> 00:13:01.279 And the purpose of this in the Old Testament 00:13:01.279 --> 00:13:03.419 was for it to be this object lesson 00:13:03.419 --> 00:13:06.759 that taught people about how holy God was. 00:13:07.700 --> 00:13:09.639 It was meant to be this daily practice 00:13:09.639 --> 00:13:11.279 that reminded God's people 00:13:11.279 --> 00:13:13.759 of the seriousness of moral purity. 00:13:13.759 --> 00:13:16.720 So it's a physical lesson about a spiritual reality. 00:13:17.319 --> 00:13:19.399 There were also some real health concerns 00:13:19.399 --> 00:13:20.799 that went along with the purity laws. 00:13:20.899 --> 00:13:22.220 So they're practical things 00:13:22.220 --> 00:13:24.419 that were meant to prevent sickness 00:13:24.419 --> 00:13:27.000 from spreading among the Old Testament community. 00:13:27.840 --> 00:13:29.200 It's with that background 00:13:29.200 --> 00:13:32.500 that we come to verses 25 and 26. 00:13:32.700 --> 00:13:34.600 So I want you to jump back in the story with me. 00:13:35.019 --> 00:13:36.659 We've met this man, Jairus, 00:13:36.679 --> 00:13:37.819 who's the ruler of the synagogue. 00:13:38.159 --> 00:13:40.460 Now we meet this other individual, this woman. 00:13:40.460 --> 00:13:44.740 We find out she's had a discharge of blood for 12 years, 00:13:44.920 --> 00:13:46.800 which is another way of saying 00:13:46.800 --> 00:13:50.519 she has been unclean for 12 years straight. 00:13:50.840 --> 00:13:53.240 There's been 12 years of her saying, 00:13:54.120 --> 00:13:55.800 don't come over to the house. 00:13:56.320 --> 00:13:57.820 I don't want to make you unclean. 00:13:58.560 --> 00:14:01.879 There's been 12 years of her being a social pariah. 00:14:02.200 --> 00:14:04.800 There have been 12 years of this woman being isolated. 00:14:04.799 --> 00:14:07.379 And we're told here she's penniless 00:14:07.379 --> 00:14:09.679 because she spent all her money on doctors. 00:14:10.199 --> 00:14:12.240 She is close to hopeless. 00:14:12.979 -->
