about the death and the martyrdom of the Apostle Paul. 00:00:53.659 --> 00:01:00.299 Many believe, and I think rightly, that Paul was released from this imprisonment about two years later. 00:01:01.159 --> 00:01:03.719 He was kind of released during the reign of Nero. 00:01:03.859 --> 00:01:05.719 You know, the emperor who fiddled while Rome burned. 00:01:06.659 --> 00:01:11.500 We'll never know for certain, but there's some compelling reasons, I think, for believing that he was released. 00:01:11.500 --> 00:01:19.480 And when he was released, I think that's the period where he wrote the pastoral letters of 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus. 00:01:21.280 --> 00:01:23.060 Fits with that stage of his life. 00:01:23.060 --> 00:01:26.740 This period ends with him in Rome. 00:01:27.920 --> 00:01:43.359 It started in the Jewish capital, didn't it? 00:01:43.579 --> 00:01:44.260 In Jerusalem. 00:01:45.480 --> 00:01:50.020 And it ends with the capital of the Gentile world, Rome. 00:01:51.020 --> 00:01:52.200 It begins in Jerusalem. 00:01:53.060 --> 00:01:54.219 And it ends in Rome. 00:01:55.299 --> 00:01:56.560 Chapter 1, verse 8. 00:01:56.659 --> 00:01:56.960 Do you remember? 00:01:57.079 --> 00:01:59.799 That's really the content page of the book. 00:02:00.420 --> 00:02:03.340 Where the risen and ascended Christ says to the apostles, 00:02:03.540 --> 00:02:10.319 You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in Judea and in Samaria and the ends of the earth. 00:02:11.080 --> 00:02:15.080 And so the central statement, the key of Acts chapter 28, is in three months in Malta, after great hospitality, and verse 11, they set sail in a ship because they'd wintered on the island. 00:02:51.520 --> 00:02:56.100 Why did they stay there for so long? continuing experience that Paul has had throughout the book of Acts. 00:05:02.959 --> 00:05:06.199 Paul has experienced, amidst all the troubles and all the persecutions 00:05:06.779 --> 00:05:09.199 and all the opposition and all the false accusations, 00:05:10.879 --> 00:05:13.779 the unchanging faithfulness of God to him. 00:05:14.939 --> 00:05:15.980 In so many ways. 00:05:17.680 --> 00:05:20.480 God had made so many promises to the apostle. 00:05:20.480 --> 00:05:25.100 And right the way through the account, God has been faithful to his promises. 00:05:26.540 --> 00:05:30.280 He's faithfully looked after the apostle Paul. 00:05:31.100 --> 00:05:32.600 He's provided for him. 00:05:32.759 --> 00:05:34.040 He has blessed him. 00:05:35.120 --> 00:05:39.200 He's fulfilled kindness. 00:06:21.160 --> 00:06:25.500 And it's another evidence, isn't it, of God faithfully dealing with Paul in all his experiences. 00:06:26.759 --> 00:06:33.100 In the midst of trial and difficulty and shipwreck and impending disaster and unfair accusation, 00:06:33.100 --> 00:06:38.379 God shines through as a God of absolute faithfulness. 00:06:38.400 --> 00:06:39.220 That's what 00:08:13.000 Because that is the impersonal view of God that they have. 00:08:13.000 --> 00:08:14.240 He's escaped from the sea. 00:08:14.240 --> 00:08:18.779 He's escaped from the sea, so justice has caught up with him. 00:08:18.779 --> 00:08:22.459 Fate has got him in the end. 00:08:24.539 --> 00:08:26.000 Paul shakes his hand into the fire. 00:08:27.299 --> 00:08:31.599 And as they watch the snake curl up and die, they discover that Paul has survived. 00:08:31.600 --> 00:08:37.639 And then they swing, don't they, these Maltese people, they swing from one extreme to the other. 00:08:38.560 see, these people, they have no concept, do they, of a loving, gracious, unchanging, faithful, all-powerful Heavenly Father. 00:08:57.379 --> 00:09:00.620 Who's dealing graciously with his servant. 00:09:01.779 --> 00:09:06.899 What they have is this impersonal, this superstitious view of what God is like. 00:09:08.519 --> 00:09:13.259 And Paul is experiencing, isn't he, the faithfulness of God, Roman official provides hospitality to them. 00:09:25.500 --> 00:09:31.480 Verse 7, now in the neighbourhood of that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, namely Publius. 00:09:32.299 --> 00:09:36.159 Who received us and entertained us hospitably for three days. 00:09:38.120 --> 00:09:42.860 He was the man whom God was going to use to give to Paul the supplies for the putting his hands on him, healed him. 00:10:11.620 --> 00:10:18.159 The word that Luke uses there literally is, Publius' father received medical attention. 00:10:20.240 --> 00:10:21.620 Luke is a doctor, isn't he? 00:10:23.080 --> 00:10:28.159 You wonder whether it's Luke and the Apostle Paul combining together in some kind of healing ministry. 00:10:28.480 --> 00:10:32.539 They use Luke's medical skills and Paul's apostolic gift. 00:10:33.759 --> 00:10:36.000 And he laid hands on them and they were restored. 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:41.399 Verse 10, all their needs have been supplied as --> 00:11:46.740 What's the reason behind those details? 00:11:48.779 --> 00:11:52.340 Why is it that God so ordained those circumstances? 00:11:54.500 --> 00:11:58.120 It was that God recognised, didn't he, that the apostle Paul needed encouragement. 00:11:59.480 --> 00:12:04.420 And so he brings these brothers, he brings these believers to meet with him. 00:12:04.700 --> 00:12:08.659 And Paul thanked God and at the end of verse 15 he is encouraged by them. 00:12:10.680 --> 00:12:16.460 Can you see, laced throughout this chapter is the thoughtfulness of the living God. 00:12:17.899 --> got to Rome he was allowed to live by himself with a soldier to guard him. 00:12:47.980 --> 00:12:51.920 That's a very significant thing, isn't it? 00:12:53.980 --> 00:12:57.620 Several times over we've seen in the narrative, God has been speaking with the apostle. 00:12:58.820 --> 00:13:01.680 And encouraging him to believe that come what may, 00:13:02.120 --> 00:13:05.240 whatever the circumstances may seem to the contrary, 00:13:05.659 --> 00:13:06.820 Paul you are going to Rome. 00:13:06.820 --> 00:13:12.060 So chapter 23 and verse 11, Paul has given that really clear promise. 00:13:12.920 --> 00:13:14.760 The following night the Lord stood by him and said, 00:13:14.960 --> 00:13:17.980 Take courage, for as you've testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, 00:13:18.379 --> 00:13:19.740 so you will do so in Rome. 00:13:21.720 --> 00:13:25.860 And the circumstances that occur from chapter 23, verse 11, 00:13:26.480 --> 00:13:28.840 to chapter 28 are pretty horrific. 00:13:28.840 --> 00:13:38.399 But they are the living God unfolding his purposes and his plans. 00:13:39.399 --> 00:13:47.440 And dealing with men and women and governors and accusers and storms and circumstances 00:13:47.440 --> 00:13:50.720 so that in everything God's purpose may be fulfilled. 00:13:50.720 --> 00:13:57.600 All the problems, all the false accusations, all the difficulties, 00:13:58.779 --> 00:13:59.960 God is at work in the midst of them. 00:14:01.600 --> 00:14:05.960 And it is a glorious thing to know God like that. 00:14:08.259 --> 00:14:13.660 It is a glorious thing around comes around. 00:14:44.100 --> 00:14:49.660 Is it that superstitious view of God that the people had? 00:14:50.720 --> 00:14:57.360 Or is it the personal knowledge of a living God who's come to us in the person of his son, 00:14:57.440 --> 00:14:59.920 the Lord Jesus Christ, and he transforms life? 00:14:59.919 --> 00:15:07.879 And he is working out the unfolding pattern of his purposes of a loving Heavenly Father. 00:15:09.719 --> 00:15:22.500 And if you know that God, it will bring you poise and peace and sufficiency and contentment into your life. 00:15:22.500 --> 00:15:26.480 Do you know God in this way? 00:15:26.480 --> 00:15:36.440 How wonderful it is to be able to discover the faithfulness of God as it is revealed here. 00:15:36.440 --> 00:15:39.320 And that's not all, is it? 00:15:39.340 --> 00:15:45.160 Because when you get to Rome with these promises in chapter 23 and chapter 27, 00:15:45.300 --> 00:15:46.940 Paul is given this special privilege. 00:15:47.280 --> Christ. 00:17:26.039 --> 00:17:27.099 They were massive. 00:17:27.920 --> 00:17:28.759 Absolutely massive. 00:17:30.579 --> 00:17:33.259 And they were taken, one of them was taken prisoner by the English soldiers. 00:17:33.259 --> 00:17:36.400 And they chained him to one of the brothers. 00:17:38.220 --> 00:17:40.359 His mother said to his brother, and when he came back, 00:17:40.440 --> 00:17:43.539 Malcolm, they've taken Davy away and chained him to an English soldier. 00:17:44.960 --> 00:17:49.079 Malcolm and Davy were known as men of powerful spiritual impact. 00:17:49.900 --> 00:17:51.980 Whoever met them was slightly in awe of them 00:17:51.980 --> 00:17:54.579 because they were colossal physical figures, 00:17:54.740 --> 00:17:56.160 but they preached Christ fearlessly. 00:23:58.839 --> 00:23:59.839 The Holy Spirit 00:23:59.839 --> 00:24:01.660 was right in saying 00:24:01.660 --> 00:24:02.980 to your fathers 00:24:02.980 --> 00:24:04.279 through Isaiah the prophet. 00:24:13.200 --> 00:24:14.519 is this vital area 00:24:14.519 --> 00:24:15.900 of Paul's faithfulness 00:24:15.900 --> 00:24:16.980 being wed, 00:24:17.139 --> 00:24:18.059 being tied 00:24:18.059 --> 00:24:19.599 to the Bible 00:24:19.599 --> 00:24:20.319 as the content 00:24:20.319 --> 00:24:22.420 that he declared 00:24:22.420 --> 00:24:23.240 concerning Christ. 00:24:24.519 --> 00:24:26.299 The focus of his ministry 00:24:26.299 --> 00:24:27.319 was Jesus 00:24:27.319 --> 00:24:28.480 but the place 00:24:28.480 --> 00:24:29.779 from which he taught them 00:24:29.779 --> 00:24:30.339 about Jesus 00:24:30.339 --> 00:24:31.439 was the Holy Scriptures. 00:24:33.039 --> 00:24:34.399 He taught them tirelessly. 00:24:35.279 --> 00:24:36.519 He taught them biblically. 00:24:38.299 --> 00:24:48.899 to quote what he did 00:24:48.899 --> 00:24:49.960 to his own nation, 00:24:50.079 --> 00:24:50.819 to the Jewish people. 00:24:53.019 --> 00:24:53.939 He tells us, 00:24:54.019 --> 00:24:54.359 doesn't he, 00:24:54.359 --> 00:24:56.019 in the letter to the Romans, 00:24:56.319 --> 00:24:58.039 that he has a special love 00:24:58.039 --> 00:24:58.879 for the Jewish people. 00:25:00.139 --> 00:25:01.000 It's a striking thing. 00:25:01.219 --> 00:25:01.679 He says, 00:25:01.859 --> 00:25:02.879 in Romans 9 verse 1, 00:25:02.939 --> 00:25:03.719 I'm speaking the truth
