Psalm 19 speaks there about God's law, the Word of God 00:00:18.120 --> 00:00:25.859 that's perfect, converts the soul in sin that lies. It speaks about how precious the Word of God is. 00:00:25.859 --> 00:00:33.740 It says, they more than gold, yea, much fine gold to be desired are. That's how precious the Word of God 00:00:33.740 --> 00:00:41.280 should be. And the Word of God, as it says there in verse 11, warns us of how we should live, and that 00:00:41.280 --> 00:00:47.980 there's a great reward for those who keep God's Word. So there's the distinctions in that Psalm that 00:00:47.980 --> 00:00:54.460 we're going to be looking at this evening as well, of what's precious to us, what is the most important 00:00:54.460 --> 00:01:01.079 thing to us, what is our heart deciding? Is it the things of this world, or is it the things of God, 00:01:01.140 --> 00:01:08.099 the Word of God? And we see that as we come into Mark chapter 8, and we're going to look at verse 00:01:08.099 --> 00:01:15.620 34 to 38 together this evening, where Jesus is here with disciples and a crowd with them. 00:01:15.620 --> 00:01:21.620 And he said, if anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 00:01:22.160 --> 00:01:28.460 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the Gospels 00:01:28.460 --> 00:01:38.300 will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life or his soul, 00:01:38.299 --> 00:01:46.200 as other translations put it? When you hear the phrase, it could be you, it's a phrase that we've maybe become familiar 00:01:55.640 --> 00:02:03.359 with. You hear it on your television screens very often, I'm sure. It could be you. There's that sense 00:02:03.359 --> 00:02:09.300 of putting something in front of you, putting a desire, putting a temptation in front of you, 00:02:09.300 --> 00:02:15.199 because it comes from the lottery. It's a phrase that the lottery has. It could be you. You could 00:02:15.199 --> 00:02:24.400 be the one to win all these millions of pounds that will completely transform your life. And it sort of 00:02:24.400 --> 00:02:31.840 seeks to fill people with that hope, that expectation, that anticipation that this life change is going to 00:02:31.840 --> 00:02:40.640 come to them. And it does happen. It happens on a fairly regular basis, sadly, in the sense of people 00:02:40.640 --> 00:02:50.080 winning large sums of money. Not too long ago, there was a couple who won 184 million pounds, a life-changing 00:02:50.080 --> 00:02:58.219 experience. But there was another couple who once thought they had won the jackpot, thought they had won 00:02:58.219 --> 00:03:05.740 the millions of pounds that was there. They had picked the right numbers. They had watched them 00:03:05.740 --> 00:03:11.099 come through. They had looked at what they thought was their ticket. They had all the six numbers. They 00:03:11.099 --> 00:03:18.419 were right. But they hadn't checked the account that was paying for the ticket to be put in to the draw. 00:03:19.020 --> 00:03:25.560 It didn't have enough money, so it never went in. They didn't win. They lost out when they thought for a 00:03:25.560 --> 00:03:33.800 moment this life-changing experience was coming their way, they lost out what might have been for them. 00:03:34.680 --> 00:03:41.860 And that's the kind of world in which we live, where these things are the important things that are put 00:03:41.860 --> 00:03:51.099 before us. But to think you've won and find out you have nothing. But the phrase, it could be you, could be 00:03:51.099 --> 00:03:59.599 applied to this passage that we're looking at this evening as well, because this could be you. In what 00:03:59.599 --> 00:04:06.780 sense? Well, when you look at these words, for what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and 00:04:06.780 --> 00:04:16.680 forfeit his life? It could be you. It could be you that ends up in this situation where you may gain 00:04:16.680 --> 00:04:24.519 everything that this world has to offer. But you forfeit your life. You forfeit your soul. 00:04:25.959 --> 00:04:30.740 And so what difference does that make to you this evening? Does it make any difference when you think 00:04:30.740 --> 00:04:37.120 of what are my priorities? What are my desires in this world? What should be really important to me 00:04:37.120 --> 00:04:45.579 this evening? Ask yourself just now, what is the most precious thing that you have in this world? 00:04:45.579 --> 00:04:53.439 What is the most precious thing you have in your belonging in this world? You could maybe answer 00:04:53.439 --> 00:05:01.099 in different ways. You maybe look around and it's a person. They are the most precious thing to you in 00:05:01.099 --> 00:05:09.379 this world. A partner, a child, someone who's precious to you. It could be a material thing. It could be 00:05:09.379 --> 00:05:14.799 wealth. Whatever it is, there are many different things that we can think, these things are precious 00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:24.220 to me. But what is the most precious thing that you have in this world? And we all have it. It's what 00:05:24.220 --> 00:05:34.259 Jesus is speaking about here. A soul. A precious soul. Something that God has given to us all. That is our life. 00:05:34.259 --> 00:05:46.060 That is our being. And that is what has eternity ahead of it. The soul. And where will it be? Where will you find your soul 00:05:46.060 --> 00:05:54.560 when that day comes? And that's what Jesus is driving home to us here. There is a difference. There's a distinction 00:05:54.560 --> 00:06:02.519 between finding that life in him and finding life in the things that this world offers. 00:06:02.939 --> 00:06:11.579 What shall it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul. Our soul should be the most 00:06:11.579 --> 00:06:18.980 precious thing that we see that we have. And when you look at what Jesus is talking about here and the 00:06:18.980 --> 00:06:26.360 setting of when he's talking about it, you realize how important he saw the soul of each one. 00:06:29.280 --> 00:06:37.400 Here he has just spoken about what he is going to do for his people. In verse 31, he began to teach them 00:06:37.400 --> 00:06:44.220 that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, the scribes, 00:06:44.220 --> 00:06:52.580 and be killed and after three days rise. Again, he was speaking plainly as it says to them. He must suffer. 00:06:52.700 --> 00:06:59.480 He must die for their sins, but he will rise again. But who is that going to be precious to? Who is it 00:06:59.480 --> 00:07:07.700 going to be important for? Not those who seek to gain the things of this world, but those who seek to see 00:07:07.699 --> 00:07:19.060 how precious our soul is. And our soul is only safe with the Lord Jesus. And so he is saying to them here, 00:07:19.599 --> 00:07:25.719 this needs to be your priority. And he's warning us this evening too, this needs to be your priority. 00:07:25.899 --> 00:07:35.180 But is it? Is your soul your priority this evening? Or are you still, as we're chasing after the things 00:07:35.180 --> 00:07:41.720 of this world, trying to find your way in this world first? Sort everything out before you come 00:07:41.720 --> 00:07:50.240 to Jesus? What profit is it if you gain everything but lose your soul? And we're reminded time and time 00:07:50.240 --> 00:08:00.600 again that age is no barrier. Age is no restriction when it comes to when our soul will be called home, 00:08:00.600 --> 00:08:10.180 when our soul will be required from us. And so today there is that urgency of your soul being right 00:08:10.180 --> 00:08:18.460 with the Lord. And Jesus here gives us instruction as to how we see how precious our soul is and what we 00:08:18.460 --> 00:08:26.160 can do in order to see where our soul finds that life in its fullness. Because the reality of life 00:08:26.160 --> 00:08:35.100 without Christ is we lose everything is we lose everything. And there is that phrase, it could be you. 00:08:36.300 --> 00:08:45.340 But it could be you who loses your soul, or it could be you who gains life in the Lord Jesus. And how do we 00:08:45.340 --> 00:08:56.060 come to know Christ in this precious way? If anyone would come after me, 00:09:35.919 --> 00:09:47.819 let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. There is that question put before us. How can we 00:09:47.819 --> 00:09:55.199 be right? Well, if anyone would come after Jesus, these are the things that they must do. We know 00:09:55.200 --> 00:10:03.300 that only Jesus can save. And this is where we find that clash, if you like, between the sovereignty of 00:10:03.300 --> 00:10:10.160 God. Only God can save. And yet we have a decision, the freedom of our will. And here he's telling us, 00:10:10.740 --> 00:10:16.820 this is what you are to do. He can save, but you are to deny yourself, take up your cross, 00:10:16.820 --> 00:10:23.300 and follow him. And so we're going to look at these three things, the denying, there's a desire, 00:10:23.860 --> 00:10:31.540 and there's a decision. The denying, the desire, and a decision. And the first thing we see is the 00:10:31.540 --> 00:10:40.520 denying. Jesus says we are to follow him, but there's a cost. If anyone would come after me, let him 00:10:40.519 --> 00:10:48.000 deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. So there's a denying there. But what does it mean? 00:10:49.199 --> 00:10:56.480 Deny himself and take up his cross. What does he mean there? Well, they are both really connected. 00:10:57.379 --> 00:11:04.899 Denying yourself and taking up the cross, they are both connected. And they are all what lead us to that 00:11:04.899 --> 00:11:12.639 relationship with the Lord Jesus, where everything else is put to a side. To deny himself means to 00:11:12.639 --> 00:11:25.299 completely disown, to separate for someone. And it's the same word interestingly used when Peter denies 00:11:25.299 --> 00:11:34.879 the Lord Jesus. He denies him three times. He separates himself from Jesus. He takes himself away. 00:11:34.879 --> 00:11:43.000 I do not know him. That is the seriousness of his denial. But here it's almost like the reversal. 00:11:44.120 --> 00:11:51.559 We deny ourselves, deny himself. So instead of denying Christ, having nothing to do with him, 00:11:51.939 --> 00:11:57.980 we're denying ourselves so that what we want is not the important thing. But our lives are turned 00:11:57.980 --> 00:12:09.480 completely towards Jesus. Too often we think of people practicing self-denial. Maybe for a time. 00:12:10.519 --> 00:12:18.279 Fasting, for example. It's not a bad thing to do, to fast from time to time. Lent is another time where people will go through a period of denying themselves 00:12:25.399 --> 00:12:35.519 certain things. But these are only for a short time. The denying ourselves here means an ongoing 00:12:35.519 --> 00:12:44.600 nature to it, day after day after day. It's much more intense, much more important. It means I'm not 00:12:44.600 --> 00:12:50.439 going to do what I want. I'm not just going to lean on my own understanding or on my own power. 00:12:50.440 --> 00:13:00.640 As somebody once put it, when I truly deny myself, I have no will but his will. I have no plans but his 00:13:00.640 --> 00:13:08.960 plans. I have no wants but what he wants for me. When I deny myself, I give up all my rights and I 00:13:08.960 --> 00:13:17.400 relinquish all control of my life to the Lord Jesus Christ. Is that the way you are living tonight? 00:13:17.399 --> 00:13:29.519 denying yourself? Not wanting your will but his in your life. Not wanting your plans to prosper but 00:13:29.519 --> 00:13:41.059 his plans to prosper. Who is the most important person in this relationship? Jesus says he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow him. 00:14:09.159 --> 00:14:20.779 So do you live this out in your life?
