Is he the promised Savior? Luke's gospel and the time of Jesus 00:00:30.240 --> 00:00:37.840 is like our world in the sense that there are many opinions and many ideas about Jesus. 00:00:38.620 --> 00:00:45.760 Even in our first seven chapters, we've seen some people recognize Jesus as Messiah and Son of God, 00:00:45.759 --> 00:00:49.699 whereas some people have called him a blasphemer and a false teacher. 00:00:50.619 --> 00:00:59.379 Some are following him as their master, some see him as a prophet. So who is Jesus? 00:01:00.799 --> 00:01:09.519 Is he, as some say, a bad man, or is he a good man? Is he just a good man, or is he the God man? 00:01:09.519 --> 00:01:18.099 And we come to Luke chapter 7, from verse 18 onwards, and I want us to imagine that we're 00:01:18.099 --> 00:01:25.000 being invited to a sit-down interview. There seems to be a growing trend, doesn't there, of those 00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:33.899 behind-the-scenes interviews, where you get to know the person behind the celebrity. Well, here, 00:01:33.900 --> 00:01:41.240 we have this question-and-answer session with the Lord Jesus. There are three questions that are asked 00:01:41.240 --> 00:01:49.040 that give us a chance to hear Jesus' thoughts, Jesus' thoughts on his ministry, so we can think 00:01:49.040 --> 00:01:56.439 about how did Jesus live. A question that helps us to think about the identity of Jesus, what's so 00:01:56.439 --> 00:02:03.680 important about his coming, and a question that takes us to attitudes towards Jesus, so we can ask 00:02:03.680 --> 00:02:11.520 ourselves, what is the right response, and more than that, what is my response to Jesus? On a weekend 00:02:11.520 --> 00:02:18.400 when many are asking, you know, what kind of king and what kind of kingdom can we look forward to, 00:02:19.060 --> 00:02:24.180 when we've seen in the news that people have made their decision about how to respond to the 00:02:24.180 --> 00:02:31.460 coronation of the king, how do we respond to this king, the king of kings? And do we recognize that 00:02:31.460 --> 00:02:39.120 this is a choice with eternal significance? So let's think, first of all, about the ministry of 00:02:39.120 --> 00:02:45.840 Jesus. We find this in verses 18 to 23, and let's think about the question that comes, a question that 00:02:45.840 --> 00:02:53.920 comes from followers of John the Baptist in verse 19, are you the one who is to come, or should we expect 00:02:53.919 --> 00:03:01.179 someone else? Jesus, are you the promised saviour, or is there someone still coming? Isn't that a great 00:03:01.179 --> 00:03:07.899 question? Jesus, are you the one? Are you the saviour? Who are you? Maybe to help us to think about the 00:03:07.899 --> 00:03:11.679 question, we can just take a minute to think about, well, who is John the Baptist who's asking this 00:03:11.679 --> 00:03:18.859 question? So we've met him a few times in chapter 1, and we discover that he was chosen by God before he 00:03:18.860 --> 00:03:27.480 was ever born. He was chosen to be a prophet, to speak for God. Indeed, he had a particular job to be 00:03:27.480 --> 00:03:34.920 the messenger who would prepare for the Lord's coming. One verse to help us to remember that, 00:03:35.600 --> 00:03:42.460 this comes from the song of his father Zechariah, as John is born, and you, my child, will be called a 00:03:42.460 --> 00:03:48.100 prophet of the Most High, for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him. 00:03:49.860 --> 00:03:56.200 And then we meet John a number of years later in chapter 3, as he begins his public ministry. 00:03:56.760 --> 00:04:03.040 And we're told in chapter 3, verse 3, that John preaches a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness 00:04:03.040 --> 00:04:10.040 of sins. So he calls people to turn away from sin, to turn towards God, the sign of that to be baptism, 00:04:10.480 --> 00:04:18.139 to know forgiveness. And then he spoke to the crowds about a coming one, one who is far greater than him, 00:04:18.139 --> 00:04:26.959 one who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire. And then we also discover in John chapter 3 00:04:26.959 --> 00:04:33.839 that John the Baptist is put in prison for speaking against the king, and he's still in prison now, 00:04:33.979 --> 00:04:39.620 so he can't come personally. So he sends some followers to ask the question of Jesus, 00:04:39.620 --> 00:04:45.980 are you the one? And we need to ask ourselves the question, what's going on when John wants that 00:04:45.980 --> 00:04:52.939 question to be asked? He has so powerfully and publicly spoken about Jesus as the one, so what's 00:04:52.939 --> 00:05:03.279 going on? I think the likely answer to this is that John the Baptist's patience has failed in some way. 00:05:04.100 --> 00:05:08.759 Remember John said he'll baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire. He was expecting, I think, 00:05:08.839 --> 00:05:18.319 for Jesus to come and bring decisive judgment, to get rid of his enemies, to establish his kingdom 00:05:18.319 --> 00:05:25.939 now. You know, the disciples had those same thoughts as well, as we read the Gospels. For John the Baptist, 00:05:26.860 --> 00:05:32.639 he was expecting the kingdom to come differently and to look differently, and so he wants to check 00:05:32.639 --> 00:05:40.259 in and to ask the question, Jesus, are you the one? Now we need to think about Jesus' answer 00:05:40.259 --> 00:05:49.519 and what Jesus' answer tells us about his ministry. So look at verse 21. At that very time, the very time 00:05:49.519 --> 00:05:55.980 that he's been asked the question, Jesus cured many who had diseases, illnesses, and evil spirits, 00:05:56.060 --> 00:06:03.360 and gave sight to many who are blind. What do we see here? We see that God's kingdom is coming, 00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:13.600 but it comes by mercy and not by the might of an army. We see that Jesus is the promised one, 00:06:14.420 --> 00:06:21.900 but he comes first as a compassionate Savior, one who brings good news of grace to the needy and the poor. 00:06:22.020 --> 00:06:30.360 Yes, he will come as judge, but here he comes first as Savior, and he invites the followers of John, 00:06:30.360 --> 00:06:38.960 and he invites us to recognize that the miracles he performs are proof that he is the promised Savior. 00:06:39.960 --> 00:06:48.180 As Jesus acts both with the power of God and the grace of God in order to transform people's lives, 00:06:49.000 --> 00:06:56.960 doing the work only God could do, whether that's dealing with blindness or disability of any kind, 00:06:56.959 --> 00:07:06.099 means the healing of infectious diseases. He is showing that he is God, and he is the God of mercy. 00:07:07.519 --> 00:07:10.979 And so he points them to the miracles, but he does more than that. 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:20.719 He invites John and his listeners, and us as well, to think back, to think back to Old Testament promises. 00:07:20.720 --> 00:07:31.300 Jesus will fulfill those promises as proof. Because then in verse 22, he replied to the messengers, 00:07:31.440 --> 00:07:37.080 go back and report to John what you have seen and heard, the blind receive sight, and so on, 00:07:37.240 --> 00:07:44.400 and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Why did we read Isaiah 35 this morning? 00:07:44.399 --> 00:07:52.799 Isaiah chapter 35 anticipates this great day when God's promised one would bring salvation, 00:07:52.799 --> 00:07:59.979 when the glory of God would be revealed, when the Lord himself would come to save. 00:08:01.359 --> 00:08:08.719 And these are the signs. These things that John, that Jesus is doing, these are the signs 00:08:08.720 --> 00:08:15.340 that God promised his Savior would perform. He has come to establish this highway of holiness, 00:08:15.340 --> 00:08:23.900 to lead his people back to God and to eternal life. And so Jesus is saying, 00:08:24.960 --> 00:08:30.320 I am the fulfillment of the great hopes of the Old Testament. And because of that, 00:08:31.160 --> 00:08:38.060 he is good news to the poor, the great hope of God's Word, the great hope for people. 00:08:38.059 --> 00:08:43.939 We find it in the ministry of Jesus, the Savior. And so he sends the messengers away in verse 23, 00:08:44.079 --> 00:08:53.259 saying, blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me. You are blessed if you don't fall 00:08:53.259 --> 00:09:02.179 off this tree, if you don't fall into a trap, but if you recognize that in Jesus, God's King is here, 00:09:02.179 --> 00:09:07.599 and he's establishing his kingdom of mercy and grace for his blessing. 00:09:09.039 --> 00:09:17.500 So in the spotlight, in this Q&A session with Jesus, is how did Jesus live? We often think, 00:09:17.519 --> 00:09:23.299 and we should often think, about how did Jesus die and why did Jesus die? But it's good for us to 00:09:23.299 --> 00:09:31.419 think about how did Jesus live? Because isn't it beautiful to see our Savior as he cared for ordinary 00:09:31.419 --> 00:09:39.979 people? Indeed, as he came like an ordinary person, didn't he? Born to a poor family, 00:09:41.259 --> 00:09:49.539 growing up in a small, unimportant time, working as a carpenter, didn't come with the robes of pomp 00:09:49.539 --> 00:09:58.339 and ceremony. He cared for and came as an ordinary person. And he loved, didn't he? He loved those 00:09:58.340 --> 00:10:08.700 the world often hated and ignored. So in Luke's gospel, we've seen him welcome tax collectors. 00:10:09.340 --> 00:10:20.580 We've seen him reach out and touch the despised leper. We've seen him honor the faith of an enemy 00:10:20.580 --> 00:10:25.360 centurion. We've seen him. We've seen him. We've seen him. We've seen him wait for his blessing. 00:10:25.360 --> 00:10:34.800 And all the way along, as you watch the life of Jesus, you see grace and mercy shown to the 00:10:34.800 --> 00:10:41.960 undeserving, teaching us that his kingdom doesn't come. We don't enter the kingdom because we are worth it. 00:10:42.860 --> 00:10:47.240 We come as we recognize, like the centurion last week, that we are not worthy, 00:10:47.240 --> 00:10:56.240 but that God is full of grace and love. And as we think about the way Jesus lived, we can understand 00:10:56.240 --> 00:11:04.560 that his love is revolutionary. It was utterly different and unique. It wasn't the way of the 00:11:04.560 --> 00:11:13.379 Jewish leaders, and it certainly wasn't the way of first century Rome. The pattern of the society 00:11:13.379 --> 00:11:21.240 around Jesus was that people who are powerful, they would use power selfishly. Perhaps we recognize 00:11:21.240 --> 00:11:27.779 that. The people that would get help would get help only if it was of benefit to me. 00:11:29.360 --> 00:11:37.899 And the message was you cared for your own, you kept a distance, or you even hated your enemy. 00:11:37.899 --> 00:11:46.519 But what have we seen from Jesus? We have seen and heard him say, love your enemy. 00:11:48.759 --> 00:11:57.539 We have seen and we have heard him speak of mercy to the least. We will see Jesus meet hatred with love. 00:11:57.539 --> 00:12:05.899 We will see in Jesus a Savior who saves by self-giving, loving sacrifice. 00:12:07.399 --> 00:12:13.099 We see the compassionate love of Jesus in the way that he lived. 00:12:14.699 --> 00:12:21.099 I read an article this week with a title that captured my attention. It said, 00:12:21.100 --> 00:12:31.500 Western society is Christ haunted. And what the author meant by that is that the values of Jesus 00:12:31.500 --> 00:12:41.639 are still with us in 21st century Scotland, even as so many people don't recognize Jesus is Lord. 00:12:41.639 --> 00:12:51.399 So the ideas and the values in our society that we take as common sense are only common sense, 00:12:51.699 --> 00:12:57.080 because Jesus has transformed the whole way that we look at the world. 00:12:57.659 --> 00:13:03.639 I was walking past the quarter mile this week, and for the first time, walking past the old, 00:13:03.639 --> 00:13:10.500 the hospital there in the quarter mile, I saw an inscription on the side of the wall. 00:13:10.980 --> 00:13:16.279 It's straight out of Matthew 25. I was sick, and ye visited me. 00:13:17.460 --> 00:13:23.379 Why is it that Christians throughout history have built hospitals? 00:13:25.039 --> 00:13:33.100 Why is it that society believes in human rights for all people, and not just for the great and the good? 00:13:33.639 --> 00:13:39.919 Why is it that even when we struggle with our own economy, we still feel it is right to send 00:13:39.919 --> 00:13:44.059 international aid to countries that are struggling and suffering? 00:13:44.659 --> 00:13:51.179 Why do we believe that it is right to release slaves and to lift people out of poverty? 00:13:52.419 --> 00:13:55.819 These things are not instinctive and common sense. 00:13:56.379 --> 00:14:00.779 They're common sense only because Jesus has transformed the way the world thinks. 00:14:00.779 --> 00:14:07.339 Compassion, equality, justice, these are the values of Jesus. 00:14:08.539 --> 00:14:13.720 And Christianity has shaped our world in thousands of wonderful ways, 00:14:14.059 --> 00:14:18.019 as the people of Jesus have sought to live like Jesus. 00:14:19.360 --> 00:14:24.539 And so even today, as so many people have no clue that Jesus is Lord, 00:14:24.539 logical arguments. 00:14:49.659 --> 00:14:53.600 He gave us a watertight person. 00:14:54.879 --> 00:14:57.759 When we look at Jesus, don't we discover, 00:14:58.279 --> 00:14:59.659 here is one I can trust. 00:15:00.679 --> 00:15:03.339 Here is one who loves and who saves. 00:15:04.079 --> 00:15:07.799 And so we are invited to consider Jesus 00:15:07.799 --> 00:15:10.519 and to come to Jesus, 00:15:11.339 --> 00:15:14.000 to receive and to recognize in him 00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:15.459 there is a unique compassion 00:15:15.459 --> 00:15:16.919 and goodness 00:15:16.919 --> 00:15:18.459 and love 00:15:18.459 --> 00:15:19.719 and grace 00:15:19.719 --> 00:15:21.459 that we see in his way of life 00:15:21.459 --> 00:15:22.259 and 00:15:22.259 --> 00:15:25.199 in the way of his death
