hands of men. 00:04:03.159 --> 00:04:07.060 That's a vague reference to the Gentiles. 00:04:09.159 --> 00:04:17.040 In chapter 8, he said that he would be rejected by the priests and the scribes. and spit on him and flog him and kill him. 00:05:09.479 --> 00:05:13.620 Now, I haven't got time to unpack each one of those things 00:05:13.620 --> 00:05:16.979 as to the significance of being played out in each one of those things. 00:05:16.980 --> 00:05:23.100 But what really stands out in chapter 10 is for the very first time, 00:05:23.220 --> 00:05:26.780 Jesus tells us not just that he will die, 00:05:27.700 --> 00:05:29.560 but why he will die. 00:05:30.600 --> 00:05:31.660 Verse 45. 00:05:32.920 --> 00:05:37.460 And this verse is the key verse in all of Mark's gospel. 00:05:37.459 --> 00:05:51.379 Now, that statement, when Jesus says that, 00:05:51.939 --> 00:05:56.399 it sets Jesus apart from every other religious leader in the world. 00:05:57.000 --> 00:06:00.039 You see, their purpose, the religious leader's purpose in this world, 00:06:00.539 --> 00:06:03.679 or philosophical leaders, is to live and to be an example. 00:06:03.680 --> 00:06:10.319 Jesus is to die, to be an example, but to die as a substitute. 00:06:13.079 --> 00:06:14.120 Now, verse 45. 00:06:14.300 --> 00:06:16.019 Let's just hone in on this for a bit. 00:06:16.079 --> 00:06:20.319 It's a key verse for Mark's gospel, and it's rich with implications. 00:06:21.079 --> 00:06:22.819 So let's take a really close look at it. 00:06:23.220 --> 00:06:24.879 A few words here, which are really key. 00:06:25.180 --> 00:06:26.420 He uses the word come. 00:06:26.420 --> 00:06:34.960 And he uses this word come to allude to the fact that he existed before he was born. 00:06:35.900 --> 00:06:38.980 He came into his world. 00:06:40.980 --> 00:06:43.960 And this points us back to the early part of Mark's gospel, 00:06:44.460 --> 00:06:50.780 where Jesus established his identity as the king of kings who ruled the universe, 00:06:51.020 --> 00:06:54.460 who created the universe and exists outside of the universe. 00:06:54.459 --> 00:07:03.519 And this is also assumed in his statement that he did not come to be served. 00:07:04.019 --> 00:07:10.679 That is, he had every right, every right to be served when he came, 00:07:11.079 --> 00:07:12.819 simply because of who he is. 00:07:13.639 --> 00:07:16.339 But he did not exercise that right. 00:07:16.339 --> 00:07:21.619 And the final phrase, to give his life as a ransom for many, 00:07:22.039 --> 00:07:25.039 sums up the reason why he came to die. 00:07:25.939 --> 00:07:29.099 Jesus came to be a substitute sacrifice. 00:07:29.979 --> 00:07:32.179 And it's there in that little word for. 00:07:33.159 --> 00:07:34.519 The little word for. 00:07:35.919 --> 00:07:40.259 To give his life as a ransom for many. 00:07:40.259 --> 00:07:49.180 And that little word for in the original text means instead of, in place of, as a substitute. 00:07:51.180 --> 00:07:54.879 And the word ransom describes the purpose of his death. 00:07:56.620 --> 00:08:02.240 In English, it's a word that's rarely used nowadays outside of a kidnapping case. 00:08:02.240 --> 00:08:10.500 The word, as Jesus uses it here, means to buy the freedom of a slave or a prisoner. 00:08:12.420 --> 00:08:18.639 And the ransom in Jesus' time would be a huge sacrificial payment that matched the value 00:08:18.639 --> 00:08:22.620 or the debt of a slave or a prisoner in order to secure their freedom. 00:08:22.620 --> 00:08:27.379 And Jesus came to pay that kind of ransom. 00:08:29.079 --> 00:08:33.940 The slavery to sin is a cosmic slavery, a cosmic evil. 00:08:34.399 --> 00:08:36.840 And so it requires a cosmic payment. 00:08:37.419 --> 00:08:39.759 And Jesus says here in verse 45, 00:08:40.139 --> 00:08:47.700 I've come to pay that cosmic payment that we could not possibly pay. 00:08:47.700 --> 00:08:51.300 And in doing so, he will buy our 00:10:10.820 So is that what's happening here? 00:10:10.919 --> 00:10:15.139 Is the cross of Christ another one of those, 00:10:16.580 --> 00:10:21.620 a savage culture that's ruled by a cranky God
