00:00:54.019 In the midst of danger, the Lord was with them. 00:00:54.020 --> 00:01:02.100 And then in verse 12, Samuel took a stone, the Ebenezer stone, the remembrance stone, and set it up. the different places, bringing the word of God to the people. 00:01:25.160 --> 00:01:27.859 So that's the context of what was going on then. 00:01:27.939 --> 00:01:32.280 But then in chapter 8, as we come into chapter 8, there's a jump. 00:01:32.920 --> 00:01:35.040 There's a jump in the time frame now. 00:01:35.120 --> 00:01:40.300 And we see that in verse 1 when it says, when Samuel became old. 00:02:02.019 --> 00:02:04.000 He was mortal. 00:02:05.259 --> 00:02:07.359 He couldn't go on forever. 00:02:07.359 --> 00:02:14.159 While Samuel was alive and judging the people, things were going well. 00:02:14.659 --> 00:02:19.500 Even in the midst of times of threat, like the Philistines there in chapter 7, 00:02:19.580 --> 00:02:23.919 they could still say, till now, the Lord has helped us. 00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:25.919 The Lord was with them. 00:02:26.659 --> 00:02:30.539 But now things are about to change. 00:02:31.300 --> 00:02:33.400 Samuel is an old man. 00:02:33.400 --> 00:02:36.939 He's got two sons, Joel and Abijah. 00:02:37.360 --> 00:02:42.780 But it says of them in verse 3, his sons did not walk in his ways. 00:02:43.600 --> 00:02:47.580 They didn't follow the way of Samuel following the Lord. 00:02:47.660 --> 00:02:50.900 Instead, they turned aside after gain. 00:02:51.340 --> 00:02:54.780 They took bribes and perverted justice. 00:02:55.300 --> 00:02:59.740 So this was now the leadership that was coming up behind. 00:02:59.740 --> 00:03:03.560 And it was already impacting the people. 00:03:03.640 --> 00:03:07.719 As you see, with the people of God, even up to this point, 00:03:07.820 --> 00:03:12.000 it's that recurring theme of turning away from God. 00:03:12.900 --> 00:03:14.200 And here it is again. 00:03:14.320 --> 00:03:16.879 The people's attitude is changing. 00:03:17.580 --> 00:03:20.620 Their desire towards God is changing. 00:03:20.780 --> 00:03:24.680 The repenting of their sins before God is on the way. 00:03:24.680 --> ongoing, as you see throughout the Bible, 00:03:37.599 --> 00:03:43.300 the sense of being near to God, blessing God, and then drifting away from God. 00:03:43.379 --> 00:03:44.600 You see it in the Old Testament. 00:03:44.599 --> 00:03:46.659 You see it in the New Testament. 00:03:46.799 --> 00:03:50.919 And you see it down through the ages of history to our own day. 00:03:51.379 --> 00:03:53.819 Today, it's the ongoing theme. 00:03:54.759 --> 00:03:56.099 Are we going to be with God? 00:03:56.139 --> 00:03:57.500 Are we going to be trusting God? 00:03:57.539 --> 00:04:02.340 Are we going to go our own way and do things in our own way? 00:04:03.240 --> 00:04:06.959 Well, having had God near and the blessing of God with them, 00:04:07.019 --> 00:04:10.879 we see a period of change is about to come here as well. 00:04:11.159 --> 00:04:13.139 And what do the people want? 00:04:13.139 --> 00:04:16.300 Do they want God with them? 00:04:17.019 --> 00:04:21.680 Do they see Joel and Abijah and their wicked ways, 00:04:21.779 --> 00:04:25.240 their bribery, their corruption, their perverting justice? 00:04:25.360 --> 00:04:26.419 Do they see this and say, 00:04:26.899 --> 00:04:29.439 Samuel, cry out to God for us? 00:04:30.579 --> 00:04:33.879 No, they come with their own ideas. 00:04:34.819 --> 00:04:36.800 And they want a king. 00:04:37.360 --> 00:04:41.519 They want a king over them as a people. 00:04:41.519 --> 00:04:43.259 In verse 5. 00:04:43.319 --> 00:04:48.439 Now, appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations. 00:04:49.599 --> 00:04:51.479 And in many ways, it sounds right. 00:04:51.539 --> 00:04:54.959 And as we'll see in a moment, it does seem like a good request. 00:04:54.959 --> 00:04:59.019 But it's what is the motive behind it. 00:04:59.339 --> 00:05:01.979 What is behind what they're asking? 00:05:02.879 --> 00:05:07.000 They want a king just like all the other nations. 00:05:07.120 --> 00:05:07.740 But why? 00:05:08.159 --> 00:05:09.819 And for what purpose? 00:05:10.599 --> 00:05:14.179 They had been used to having judges over them, 00:05:14.299 --> 00:05:16.699 judges who were leading them towards God. 00:05:16.699 --> 00:05:18.680 But now their eyes were starting to wonder 00:05:18.680 --> 00:05:21.199 and see what else was going on around them 00:05:21.199 --> 00:05:24.000 and think, maybe we should go that way. 00:05:25.060 --> 00:05:28.719 And that's so often the problem for ourselves today as well. 00:05:29.159 --> 00:05:32.639 We can become so accustomed to calling ourselves 00:05:32.639 --> 00:05:35.939 maybe a Christian people or a Christian nation. 00:05:35.939 --> 00:05:39.540 And we think that we have everything in our hands that we need. 00:05:39.860 --> 00:05:42.500 But then we start to see little things around us 00:05:42.500 --> 00:05:45.660 that catch our attention and lead us away 00:05:45.660 --> 00:05:48.040 and make us think, well, maybe what we need 00:05:48.040 --> 00:05:50.160 is we can still have God to a degree, 00:05:50.240 --> 00:05:52.480 but we can have all these other things as well. 00:05:52.519 --> 00:05:54.740 And eventually, God is pushed out. 00:05:54.860 --> 00:05:55.379 And instead we're saying, 00:05:55.480 --> 00:05:58.639 we want to be just like everybody else around us. 00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:02.579 Just think back in our own lifetime. 00:06:03.339 --> 00:06:06.099 We had a queen, Queen Elizabeth II, 00:06:06.319 --> 00:06:09.120 who ruled for over 70 years, 00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:11.680 an incredible length of time. 00:06:13.079 --> 00:06:15.680 And for many of us, it's all we knew 00:06:15.680 --> 00:06:19.079 from a very young age up until 2022 00:06:19.079 --> 00:06:20.459 when she passed away. 00:06:20.519 --> 00:06:21.379 It's all we knew. 00:06:22.159 --> 00:06:24.399 Queen Elizabeth II was all we knew. 00:06:25.099 --> 00:06:27.339 And it's hard to imagine anybody saying 00:06:27.339 --> 00:06:28.539 during her reign, 00:06:29.259 --> 00:06:32.539 we don't want her as queen anymore. 00:06:33.139 --> 00:06:34.779 There would be maybe one or two 00:06:34.779 --> 00:06:37.319 who weren't royalists in that sense 00:06:37.319 --> 00:06:37.939 who would say it. 00:06:37.959 --> 00:06:39.839 But the majority of people would never come 00:06:39.839 --> 00:06:43.179 and say, we don't want you as queen over us anymore. 00:06:43.279 --> 00:06:44.620 You would never get like this, 00:06:45.059 --> 00:06:47.620 the elders of Israel or the parliament 00:06:47.620 --> 00:06:49.679 coming to the queen in our day and saying, 00:06:49.759 --> 00:06:52.739 we don't want you as queen anymore. 00:06:52.859 --> 00:06:53.899 We want something else. 00:06:53.959 --> 00:06:55.699 We want something different. 00:06:55.699 --> 00:06:59.779 But change often happens 00:06:59.779 --> 00:07:02.680 and it brings in a sense of a different perspective. 00:07:03.680 --> 00:07:05.920 So today, maybe many more would Samuel's day. 00:07:35.939 --> 00:07:38.960 They'd had Samuel for a long period of time. 00:07:39.840 --> 00:07:42.120 But change is coming in and it's no longer, 00:07:42.640 --> 00:07:44.460 we don't want Samuel anymore. 00:07:45.120 --> 00:07:47.580 It's more we don't want the Lord anymore. 00:07:47.579 --> 00:07:50.879 So let's just see what our options are. 00:07:52.399 --> 00:07:56.359 And so we want to see just what this meant in Samuel's day. 00:07:57.099 --> 00:07:59.959 Sometimes we take peace for granted. 00:08:00.219 --> 00:08:03.240 Sometimes we take the blessing of God for granted, 00:08:03.240 --> 00:08:07.599 that he has given us days of peace and his goodness to us. 00:08:08.560 --> 00:08:09.819 And we start to suddenly think, 00:08:09.919 --> 00:08:11.740 maybe we don't want that anymore. 00:08:11.860 --> 00:08:13.860 We don't want the Lord anymore. 00:08:13.860 --> 00:08:16.699 And as we see the world in which we live, 00:08:16.920 --> 00:08:19.580 I almost could say it's at a tipping point today, 00:08:20.180 --> 00:08:21.960 where every nation is asking, 00:08:22.139 --> 00:08:24.319 well, who is going to be our king? 00:08:24.639 --> 00:08:26.400 Who is going to be our ruler? 00:08:26.520 --> 00:08:29.879 Who is going to help us in the midst of all that's going on? 00:08:29.920 --> 00:08:32.659 And it's all about egos and personalities. 00:08:34.860 --> 00:08:36.940 Instead of every nation of the world saying, 00:08:37.080 --> 00:08:40.120 may the Lord be king over us. 00:08:40.120 --> 00:08:44.840 We are always in danger of pushing God out. 00:08:45.460 --> 00:08:48.399 And with that, there are serious consequences. 00:08:49.179 --> 00:08:52.279 And there's three things I want us to see in this chapter today 00:08:52.279 --> 00:08:55.740 as we think of the people's request for a king. 00:08:56.279 --> 00:08:59.379 The first thing is just the request itself. 00:08:59.500 --> 00:09:00.259 We'll begin with that. 00:09:00.360 --> 00:09:03.500 The request that is made by the people. 00:09:04.539 --> 00:09:06.399 And like I say, the people's request, 00:09:06.639 --> 00:09:09.460 it's not a wrong request. 00:09:09.460 --> 00:09:12.400 In fact, if you go back to the book of Deuteronomy, 00:09:12.519 --> 00:09:14.400 it's something that the Lord has already told them 00:09:14.400 --> 00:09:16.139 that's going to be happening. 00:09:16.720 --> 00:09:18.120 And the Lord has said to them that, 00:09:18.580 --> 00:09:21.460 you will have a king over you. 00:09:22.139 --> 00:09:25.080 In Deuteronomy 17, verse 14, it says, 00:09:25.180 --> 00:09:26.460 when you come to the land, 00:09:26.920 --> 00:09:28.660 the Lord your God is giving you, 00:09:28.700 --> 00:09:30.360 and you possess it and dwell in it, 00:09:30.440 --> 00:09:33.879 and then say, I will set a king over me 00:09:33.879 --> 00:09:36.259 like all the nations that are around me. 00:09:36.259 --> 00:09:39.340 You may indeed set a king over you 00:09:39.340 --> 00:09:42.500 whom the Lord your God will choose. 00:09:44.120 --> 00:09:47.500 So the request itself wasn't wrong. 00:09:48.360 --> 00:09:51.899 They had heard from the Lord that this was going to happen, 00:09:51.980 --> 00:09:53.220 that this would take place. 00:09:53.840 --> 00:09:56.319 And here in this tipping point in their history, 00:09:56.439 --> 00:09:59.819 they're about to move from having judges over them 00:09:59.819 --> 00:10:01.980 to having a king over them. 00:10:01.980 --> 00:10:04.620 And you think, great, we're going to see the Lord 00:10:04.620 --> 00:10:06.680 working out his plan. 00:10:07.460 --> 00:10:08.840 But there's a problem. 00:10:09.879 --> 00:10:11.620 When you look at Deuteronomy, 00:10:12.100 --> 00:10:14.399 it says, a king over you 00:10:14.399 --> 00:10:17.720 whom the Lord your God will choose. 00:10:19.800 --> 00:10:22.779 But here in verse 5, it's saying, 00:10:22.940 --> 00:10:24.560 now appoint for us a king 00:10:24.559 --> 00:10:27.399 to judge us like all the nations. 00:10:28.599 --> 00:10:31.159 They are wanting to have their say. 00:10:31.659 --> 00:10:34.279 It's not about the Lord's choosing, 00:10:34.859 --> 00:10:37.519 but just their own desires. 00:10:38.899 --> 00:10:41.759 And so from here we see the request for a king, 00:10:42.279 --> 00:10:43.639 not itself wrong, 00:10:44.599 --> 00:10:48.219 but it's a motive behind it that is wrong. 00:10:49.339 --> 00:10:52.319 You could say the people were right to call for a change. 00:10:52.320 --> 00:10:54.400 They see, Samuel, you're old. 00:10:54.500 --> 00:10:58.140 Your sons are taking bribes and perverting justice. 00:10:58.340 --> 00:10:59.840 Something's got to change. 00:11:00.180 --> 00:11:02.760 So we're going to take it into our own hands. 00:11:03.280 --> 00:11:06.240 And we are going to sort out this mess. 00:11:07.840 --> 00:11:11.240 But what they want is to be like all the other nations. battles. 00:11:29.159 --> 00:11:29.839 It says there, 00:11:30.100 --> 00:11:32.899 they're wanting a king who's going to do what they want 00:11:32.899 --> 00:11:34.659 and the way they wanted. 00:11:35.500 --> 00:11:39.120 And the people did not trust God in their battles. 00:11:39.240 --> 00:11:40.279 That's what they're saying here. 00:11:40.339 --> 00:11:43.659 We need a king who will go before us in our battles. 00:11:43.659 --> 00:11:46.919 If we are going to be successful, 00:11:47.079 --> 00:11:50.399 we must be like all the other nations around us. 00:11:50.939 --> 00:11:52.159 Because we look at them, 00:11:52.240 --> 00:11:53.639 they've got a kings themselves. 00:11:54.159 --> 00:11:56.919 That's the way we need to go. 00:11:58.279 --> 00:12:01.439 They didn't want to be
