to make a decision very quickly. 00:02:29.240 --> 00:02:34.439 The passage tonight is made up of three sections. 00:02:34.980 --> 00:02:40.900 And as we study the text, we'll see how David is the king section narrates the main event of the chapter, and it goes from verse 1 to verse 7, and it shows us David as the servant king. 00:03:17.840 --> 00:03:25.620 Moving on to the second section, we have the right thing by serving, by trusting, and by waiting. 00:03:47.699 --> 00:03:51.199 Now, before we look at what happens in the cave, let's recap. 00:03:51.500 --> 00:03:55.979 Let's sort of rewind and see what's been happening in the life of David for the last little while. 00:03:55.979 --> 00:04:01.759 Because if we want to understand the significance of today's passage, we have to understand what the main events are, 00:04:02.019 --> 00:04:08.739 which have led to this peculiar situation of Saul and David finding themselves in this, you might want to call it, a toilet cave room. 00:04:09.799 --> 00:04:13.919 So David and Saul were both anointed kings by Samuel. 00:04:14.859 --> 00:04:17.980 Saul was the king that the people of Israel wanted. 00:04:18.759 --> 00:04:23.779 He was the king that they asked for, a king like the other nations. 00:04:23.779 --> 00:04:26.879 They asked for such a king in chapter 8. 00:04:27.479 --> 00:04:33.519 However, Saul defied the Lord because he didn't respect his commandments in chapters 13 and 15. 00:04:33.899 --> 00:04:36.559 Therefore, God rejected Saul as king. 00:04:37.539 --> 00:04:39.599 However, Saul is still on the throne. 00:04:40.079 --> 00:04:41.439 On the other hand, we have David. 00:04:41.979 --> 00:04:43.799 David is the king that God has chosen. 00:04:44.539 --> 00:04:51.699 Samuel anointed him to in chapter 16 as he was instructed by God after God rejected Saul. 00:04:51.699 --> 00:04:57.319 But it's not time yet for David to sit on the throne. 00:04:58.759 --> 00:05:06.279 Not only was David anointed by Samuel, you might also remember he's defeated Goliath, the giant Philistine, in the chapter after. 00:05:06.860 --> 00:05:14.839 And his dear friend Jonathan, who's Saul's son, he just promised him two weeks ago in chapter 23 that he will not stand. 00:05:14.980 --> 00:05:18.159 Jonathan will not stand in the way of David becoming king. 00:05:18.160 --> 00:05:25.020 And Jonathan even told David that even Saul, his father, knows that David will be king one day. 00:05:27.200 --> 00:05:32.760 And yet, despite all of this, as we have seen for the past few Sundays, David is on the run. 00:05:33.460 --> 00:05:35.460 Saul became jealous of David. 00:05:36.040 --> 00:05:41.340 And even though he relented a couple of times, to this point he's already tried to kill him five times. 00:05:41.339 --> 00:05:47.739 And in today's passage, he's more determined than ever to catch him and to finish him. 00:05:48.899 --> 00:05:55.159 And Saul is not going after David just with his own spear like the first time that he attacked him. 00:05:55.639 --> 00:05:59.879 At this point in time, Saul has 3,000 chosen men with him. 00:06:00.419 --> 00:06:09.039 3,000 men who know how to do war are chasing after David and his 600 men, one-fifth of Saul's army. 00:06:09.040 --> 00:06:13.420 And David's men, they're outcasts and rejects. 00:06:13.540 --> 00:06:14.860 There are no soldiers. 00:06:16.620 --> 00:06:18.220 So this is what's happened so far. 00:06:18.480 --> 00:06:22.140 Now let's see what happens in verses 1 to 7. 00:06:22.400 --> 00:06:29.939 Let's see why David is the right king who's the king who does the right thing by serving. 00:06:29.939 --> 00:06:35.740 In verse 1, we read that Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines. 00:06:36.160 --> 00:06:40.279 And if you were here two Sundays ago, you'll remember that Saul was chasing David around this mountain. 00:06:40.719 --> 00:06:46.860 And just when it seemed that he was about to catch him, a messenger told Saul that the Philistines were raiding some villages. 00:06:47.259 --> 00:06:48.819 So Saul and his men left. 00:06:49.339 --> 00:06:51.259 So clearly God's providence was at work. 00:06:51.259 --> 00:06:53.480 But now Saul is back. 00:06:53.899 --> 00:07:00.019 And like it's already happened on other occasions, his spies, his spies are another advantage that he has over David. 00:07:00.360 --> 00:07:02.060 They tell him where David is. 00:07:02.360 --> 00:07:09.500 So he gathers his 3,000s and off he goes to the crags of the wild goats, an area full of caves. 00:07:09.500 --> 00:07:21.560 Now I think this is one of those passages in the Bible where we're reminded that even though it was written thousands of years ago, it's still very relatable, if not sometimes even comical. 00:07:21.920 --> 00:07:24.259 Because it tells us of women and men just like us. 00:07:24.800 --> 00:07:32.680 And in some cases it will do so by describing the sinful nature of these people in a way that reminds us of our own sins. 00:07:33.199 --> 00:07:37.339 Some other times it reminds us that king or not, we all need to move our bowels. 00:07:37.339 --> 00:07:41.639 Because God has designed us like that and there's nothing we can do to avoid it. 00:07:41.939 --> 00:07:47.299 So Saul leaves his men behind, we're not sure how far, and picks a cave to go relieve himself. 00:07:48.439 --> 00:07:58.159 And of all the caves, and as I said there were men in this area, he manages to pick the one where his men, his enemies are hiding. 00:07:59.039 --> 00:08:00.159 What are the chances? 00:08:00.899 --> 00:08:04.199 It's like, again, the author is trying to tell us something. 00:08:04.199 --> 00:08:09.240 God is clearly at work here too, just like he was during the chase around the mountain. 00:08:10.319 --> 00:08:12.259 So what happens as Saul goes in? 00:08:12.719 --> 00:08:13.699 Does he go in? 00:08:14.060 --> 00:08:19.659 Does he see David and then shouts to his men and tell them to get there immediately and massacre everyone? 00:08:20.659 --> 00:08:20.919 No. 00:08:21.459 --> 00:08:22.719 In fact, nothing happens. 00:08:23.180 --> 00:08:30.039 Because Saul goes in, the cave is probably very dark, maybe it bends at the back, and he doesn't see who is in it. 00:08:30.040 --> 00:08:32.779 In fact, he doesn't see that anyone at all is in it. 00:08:32.820 --> 00:08:36.259 So he simply goes to the toilet like he would have in any other cave. 00:08:37.500 --> 00:08:41.440 Can we think of a more vulnerable situation? 00:08:42.759 --> 00:08:43.860 He's without wonder if any of us can blame David's men for what they say in verse 4. 00:09:02.899 --> 00:09:03.719 Let's read it again. 00:09:04.539 --> 00:09:08.159 This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, 00:09:08.559 --> 00:09:13.139 I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish. 00:09:13.139 --> 00:09:20.860 Now, as far as we know, when God said this, he was actually talking about the Philistines in chapter 23. 00:09:21.500 --> 00:09:25.519 And based on what is recorded in the book of Samuel, 00:09:25.879 --> 00:09:30.620 we're not aware that God ever explicitly referred to Saul as David's enemy 00:09:30.620 --> 00:09:35.939 or that he ever said Saul would be someone who God would put into David's hands. 00:09:37.039 --> 00:09:42.059 But in their defense, this man has been chasing David and his men for months. 00:09:42.059 --> 00:09:45.599 And if that's not an enemy, I don't know what it is. 00:09:45.899 --> 00:09:46.899 And enemies are enemies. 00:09:47.619 --> 00:09:51.899 Plus, even if David's men had been the most selfless people on earth, 00:09:52.319 --> 00:09:56.279 even if they didn't care about their own lives, maybe they cared about God. 00:09:56.599 --> 00:10:01.979 And they were still shocked and outraged by how Saul had massacred a whole town of people, 00:10:02.399 --> 00:10:04.579 including God's very own priests. 00:10:04.879 --> 00:10:06.399 We saw that in chapter 22. 00:10:07.599 --> 00:10:11.279 Wouldn't we have felt entitled to take Saul's life? 00:10:11.279 --> 00:10:14.699 I mean, he's clearly not a man after God's heart. 00:10:15.120 --> 00:10:17.659 And the world would be better off without him. 00:10:19.799 --> 00:10:23.000 As far as David goes, we do know his thinking at this stage. 00:10:23.419 --> 00:10:26.179 According to the order that the events are narrated here, 00:10:26.740 --> 00:10:28.839 his men encourage him to take Saul's life. 00:10:29.220 --> 00:10:30.500 And then he leaves them. 00:10:30.879 --> 00:10:36.179 And stealthy like a ninja, he approaches Saul and cuts off a piece of his robe, 00:10:36.579 --> 00:10:38.720 without Saul even noticing. 00:10:38.720 --> 00:10:43.759 We just don't know if he approached Saul with the intention of killing him, 00:10:44.139 --> 00:10:47.360 or if he wanted to take just a piece of rope from the very start, 00:10:47.399 --> 00:10:50.240 as he does as a proof that he spared his life. 00:10:51.259 --> 00:10:54.840 However, what we do know is that after cutting it, 00:10:55.200 --> 00:10:56.980 he is conscience stricken. 00:10:58.160 --> 00:10:59.399 David feels guilty. 00:10:59.399 --> 00:11:04.159 Maybe because he was very close to giving in to the temptation to kill the king. 00:11:05.579 --> 00:11:09.860 Another reason might be that even though he didn't kill him, 00:11:09.939 --> 00:11:11.439 he still disrespected him. 00:11:11.639 --> 00:11:13.959 And way more than we can appreciate these days, 00:11:14.079 --> 00:11:15.840 because in David's culture, 00:11:16.319 --> 00:11:21.399 robes had a symbolic meaning to do with the authority of a person. 00:11:21.399 --> 00:11:28.120 Either way, David goes back to his men and he sharply rebukes them. 00:11:29.019 --> 00:11:35.139 A literal translation of the original would have read that he tore them apart with his words. 00:11:36.740 --> 00:11:41.840 Now, I want you to think about how this was really not an easy conversation to have. 00:11:41.840 --> 00:11:47.759 Apart from the fact that they had to whisper to not be heard by Saul
