of the city hurried out early in the morning to meet Israel in battle at a certain place overlooking the Arabah. 00:02:56.660 --> 00:03:00.420 But he did not know that an ambush had been set against 00:03:53.319 The Israelites who had been fleeing towards the wilderness had turned back against their pursuers. 00:03:53.979 --> 00:03:59.579 For when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that smoke was going up from the city, 00:03:59.859 --> 00:04:01.620 they turned around and attacked the men of Ai. 00:04:02.379 --> 00:04:07.639 Those in the ambush also came out of the city against them, so they were caught in the middle with Israelites on both sides. 00:04:08.159 --> 00:04:11.159 Israel cut them down, leaving neither survivors nor fugitives. 00:04:11.879 --> 00:04:14.939 But they took the king of Ai alive and brought him to Joshua. 00:04:14.939 --> 00:04:20.759 When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai in the fields and in the wilderness where they had chased them, 00:04:21.279 --> 00:04:27.100 and when every one of them had been put to the sword, all the Israelites returned to Ai and killed those who were in it. 00:04:27.500 --> 00:04:31.199 Twelve thousand men and women fell that day, all the people of Ai. 00:04:31.839 --> 00:04:37.740 For Joshua did not draw back the hand that held out his javelin until he had destroyed all who had lived in Ai. 00:04:38.120 --> 00:04:44.659 But Israel did carry off for themselves the livestock and plunder of this city, as the Lord had instructed Joshua. 00:04:44.939 --> 00:04:51.180 So Joshua burned Ai and made it a permanent heap of ruins, a desolate place to this day. 00:04:51.719 --> 00:04:56.000 He impaled the body of the king of Ai on a pole and left it there until evening. on stones a copy of the law of Moses. 00:05:34.199 --> 00:05:42.360 All the Israelites, with their elders, officials and judges, were standing on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the Lord, in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses, the servant of the Lord, had formerly commanded, when he gave instructions to bless the people of Israel. 00:05:58.160 --> 00:06:05.439 Afterwards, Joshua read all the words of the law, the blessings and the curses, just as it is written in the book of the law. 00:06:05.439 --> 00:06:17.600 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read to the whole assembly of Israel, including the women and children and the foreigners who lived among them. 00:06:18.759 --> 00:06:26.120 So there's a lengthy reading there about the second time Israel goes to battle against Ai. 00:06:26.279 --> 00:06:34.040 But our point this evening is that the Christian and the Christian church lives by the word of God. 00:06:34.040 --> 00:06:37.460 And I hope we'll see that clearly in our text. 00:06:37.600 --> 00:06:44.540 But I want to begin with something that you may have watched over the last year or really interesting for giving an insight between the close connection between the city of Sunderland and the team. 00:07:15.420 --> 00:07:18.899 You know, in a sense to be from Sunderland is to be a follower of the club. 00:07:19.079 --> 00:07:20.340 And that really became clear. 00:07:20.339 --> 00:07:24.560 Another one that we watched was the one about Juventus. 00:07:25.219 --> 00:07:27.019 You know, very different club Italian. 00:07:27.159 --> 00:07:28.599 Giants, champions mentality. 00:07:28.819 --> 00:07:33.439 And it focused on, a lot of the episodes came back to their motto. 00:07:34.039 --> 00:07:35.239 Fino alla fine. 00:07:35.439 --> 00:07:36.579 Which means to the end. 00:07:37.019 --> 00:07:41.699 This is a team who fights and ultimately fights for victory and success. 00:07:41.699 --> 00:07:44.180 Now, take that idea. 00:07:45.180 --> 00:07:47.979 Apply it to what we've been reading in the book of Joshua. 00:07:48.459 --> 00:07:56.819 Joshua chapters 5 to 8 stands as a window into how the people of God tick. 00:07:57.000 --> 00:07:58.159 Or how they shoot. 00:07:59.319 --> 00:08:02.000 They are called to follow God. 00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:07.620 They are called to fight under God for promised victory. 00:08:08.300 --> 00:08:14.579 And if we think of Joshua 5 to 8 giving us a window into the life of the people of God, 00:08:14.680 --> 00:08:15.540 then the frame. 00:08:16.740 --> 00:08:19.980 What we have at the beginning of Joshua 5, we have a covenant ceremony. 00:08:21.500 --> 00:08:22.899 Reminding them that they are God's people. 00:08:23.079 --> 00:08:26.899 And it ends, end of chapter 8, with covenant renewal. 00:08:27.040 --> 00:08:29.339 A reminder that they are God's people. 00:08:29.339 --> 00:08:33.659 That first and foremost, they are to work on their relationship with God. 00:08:33.799 --> 00:08:39.980 The point then is that Israel's life and identity is understood in relation to their God. 00:08:40.439 --> 00:08:44.379 And between that frame, so chapters 6 and 7 and most of 8, 00:08:44.779 --> 00:08:50.240 there is a focus on the place of God's word among the people of God. 00:08:50.559 --> 00:08:53.199 So last week, chapter 7, we had Achan. 00:08:53.200 --> 00:09:00.759 And the negative example where Achan didn't listen to God's word and sin and judgment came. 00:09:01.240 --> 00:09:02.840 Chapters 6 and 8 are different. 00:09:02.940 --> 00:09:07.960 They are positive examples of hearing and obeying God's word. 00:09:08.080 --> 00:09:10.240 And success follows. 00:09:11.560 --> 00:09:14.700 This was not a new message or concept to God's people. 00:09:14.700 --> 00:09:21.960 In Deuteronomy 8, verse 3, Moses speaking to the people says, 00:09:22.160 --> 00:09:26.460 God humbled you to teach you that man does not live by bread alone, 00:09:27.180 --> 00:09:29.259 but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. 00:09:29.379 --> 00:09:34.440 And of course, we just listened to Jesus then using those words as he faced temptation. 00:09:34.440 --> 00:09:44.700 So the key lesson of Joshua 8 is that God's people, the church, are called to live by the word of God. 00:09:45.760 --> 00:09:50.300 We'll see that it gives direction for living as God's people, 00:09:50.560 --> 00:09:52.460 especially thinking about holiness and obedience. 00:09:53.580 --> 00:09:59.700 We'll see that it gives strength in the spiritual battles that are faced. 00:09:59.700 --> 00:10:08.500 And we'll see that the word of God thoroughly helps to maintain and enjoy covenant relationship with God. 00:10:08.960 --> 00:10:14.020 So let's begin thinking firstly about God's word and direction. 00:10:15.020 --> 00:10:18.000 And we can see this in the first nine verses. 00:10:18.259 --> 00:10:23.000 Chapter 8 brings us back to fighting against the people, the city of Ai. 00:10:23.520 --> 00:10:27.080 There's a very different outcome from the humiliation of last chapter. 00:10:27.080 --> 00:10:28.379 Why is that? 00:10:29.700 --> 00:10:35.340 The difference, if we were to overview the whole story, is that God and his word this time are central. 00:10:36.640 --> 00:10:41.580 Joshua, as God's chosen leader, is now the central human figure. 00:10:41.660 --> 00:10:42.420 There's been a shift. 00:10:42.780 --> 00:10:48.500 They've come to understand their sin and now they want to be listening to God and obeying. 00:10:49.560 --> 00:10:53.879 And so if we begin at verse 1, we see God's words. 00:10:54.259 --> 00:10:55.140 What does it do for the people? 00:10:55.220 --> 00:10:57.080 God's word, first of all, reassures them. 00:10:57.080 --> 00:10:59.500 You know, they've just failed. 00:11:00.160 --> 00:11:00.980 Judgment has come. 00:11:01.700 --> 00:11:04.420 Then the Lord said to Joshua, do not be afraid. 00:11:05.139 --> 00:11:06.900 Do not be discouraged. 00:11:08.180 --> 00:11:10.920 The sin of chapter 7 has been dealt with. 00:11:10.960 --> 00:11:11.759 The judgment has come. 00:11:11.840 --> 00:11:15.800 And now God has restored them to favor. 00:11:16.340 --> 00:11:19.860 It restored them to their right relationship. 00:11:19.860 --> 00:11:30.200 The commander of the Lord who had fought against them at Ai because of their disobedience would now be for them in their obedience. 00:11:30.960 --> 00:11:36.539 So God's word gives them reassurance and God's word directs the people of God. 00:11:36.620 --> 00:11:41.300 And that's so clear in the way this chapter flows. 00:11:41.299 --> 00:11:47.120 So, for example, God's word directs who's involved in the battle. 00:11:47.839 --> 00:11:50.299 Chapter 7, they said, let's just send up a few. 00:11:50.539 --> 00:11:51.359 There'll be no problem. 00:11:51.919 --> 00:11:56.279 This time, send up the whole army. 00:11:56.620 --> 00:11:58.419 Verse 1, take the whole army with you. 00:11:58.419 --> 00:12:04.759 What are they to do in this battle is directed by God's word. 00:12:04.879 --> 00:12:08.639 Verse 2, you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king. 00:12:09.399 --> 00:12:14.339 How are they to achieve this success in battle is made clear. 00:12:14.459 --> 00:12:17.120 End of verse 2, set an ambush behind the city. 00:12:17.299 --> 00:12:18.860 God is directing at every point. 00:12:19.339 --> 00:12:20.959 And God's word doesn't just direct. 00:12:21.039 --> 00:12:22.079 God's word also promises. 00:12:22.080 --> 00:12:28.740 As they go into this battle, as they've been defeated one time, there is a promise in verse 2. 00:12:29.200 --> 00:12:31.900 You shall do to Ai as you did to Jericho. 00:12:32.040 --> 00:12:33.100 Victory will come. 00:12:33.200 --> 00:12:38.740 And this time, at the hands of a generous God, they are allowed to carry off the plunder and the livestock. 00:12:39.080 --> 00:12:43.440 The spoils of war that belong to God are now given to his people. 00:12:44.879 --> 00:12:49.060 And so from those introductory words, we then see that God's word is obeyed. 00:12:49.059 --> 00:12:51.259 Here, Joshua comes into focus. 00:12:51.339 --> 00:12:57.000 And what we see is that Joshua and the whole army moved to attack Ai. 00:12:57.759 --> 00:13:01.159 We see that Joshua sets that ambush. 00:13:01.259 --> 00:13:03.359 So the main army is in one place. 00:13:03.559 --> 00:13:06.899 And then the ambush lies to if, by contrast, you find yourself time poor because homeschool is manic or you're just crazy busy 00:15:32.539 --> 00:15:38.500 and the inefficiency of this working pattern means you've got more to do, 00:15:40.719 --> 00:15:45.839 then maybe you need to sort of seize opportunities to read a verse from God's word and to pray about it, 00:15:45.959 --> 00:15:48.899 to reflect on something you've heard from a sermon. 00:15:50.959 --> 00:15:56.139 Whatever our circumstances, we must make time to hear God's word because to obey it, 00:15:57.019 --> 00:15:59.899 we must first hear it and know what it teaches. 00:15:59.899 --> 00:16:04.720 And we must recognise that God's word, it has authority. 00:16:04.860 --> 00:16:06.879 That's one of the things that becomes clear for Joshua and Israel. 00:16:06.980 --> 00:16:10.500 They understand they stand under the authority of God's word. 00:16:11.179 --> 00:16:18.199 That we must submit to the idea, the reality that God is Lord, that Jesus is relationships, where either we're spending a lot of time with our family, 00:16:51.280 --> 00:16:56.700 and that brings its own challenges for obedience, or where we're missing and we're far from our life. 00:17:08.500 --> 00:17:10.880 You know, our routines and our structures are all changing, 00:17:11.019 --> 00:17:19.299 but that foundation of looking to apply God's word to our work patterns, our integrity, doesn't change. 00:17:20.740 --> 00:17:24.279 God's word has authority over how we use our leisure time, 00:17:24.700 --> 00:17:29.160 how we spend our time on the internet, how we spend our money. 00:17:29.160 --> 00:17:36.800 So we need to recognise that God's word gives direction and it has authority. 00:17:38.779 --> 00:17:45.740 So from there, having set the scene, the bulk of the chapter, from verse 10 to verse 29, 00:17:45.940 --> 00:17:47.740 focuses on the battle of Ai. 00:17:47.820 --> 00:17:51.820 So I want us to think about God's word and spiritual battle. verse 13, what have we got there? 00:18:01.460 --> 00:18:06.519 We've got Joshua setting up the army, following God's orders. 00:18:07.519 --> 00:18:12.700 So there's the main army and then there's the smaller group ready for the ambush. 00:18:13.660 --> 00:18:19.740 Verse 14 to 17, we see that this trap has been sprung. 00:18:19.740 --> 00:18:27.460 Because the king of Ai and the people of Ai see the people of God and they decide, 00:18:27.700 --> 00:18:30.880 hang on a minute, we won an easy victory last time. 00:18:31.960 --> 00:18:34.440 Let's go chase, pursue and destroy. 00:18:34.579 --> 00:18:41.779 And notice the entire city, all the men of the city come out because they want to destroy God's people. 00:18:41.779 --> 00:18:51.639 We need to recognise that, that part of Israel's battles is a judgement against the people who are in sinful rebellion against God. 00:18:51.700 --> 00:18:53.279 And we saw that last week. 00:18:55.039 --> 00:18:56.039 Notice verse 18. 00:18:56.980 that in a little while. 00:19:48.359 --> 00:19:50.000 That's the battle. 00:19:50.000 --> 00:20:01.279 I think it's significant too to recognise that the battle scene here, some of the details very grim memorial of the ugliness of the battle. 00:26:41.859 --> 00:26:45.279 Thinking about this memorial to a war that's passed, 00:26:45.960 --> 00:26:49.599 made me think of Auschwitz. 00:26:49.599 --> 00:26:55.039 So in 1947, so very quickly after the Second World War ended, 00:26:55.139 --> 00:26:58.259 the Polish government chose to make Auschwitz a memorial. 00:26:58.459 --> 00:27:02.179 Auschwitz, the German, the Nazi extermination camp, 00:27:02.279 --> 00:27:07.879 where hundreds of thousands of Jews and Polish citizens of various kinds 00:27:07.879 --> 00:27:11.119 were so horrifically executed. 00:27:11.119 --> 00:27:17.199 And the question then is, why choose to make this grim place a memorial? 00:27:17.359 --> 00:27:21.319 Why not just knock it down and sort of build over it? 00:27:22.459 --> 00:27:29.379 And the reason is that they wanted to make sure that the memory of the horrors of World War II 00:27:29.379 --> 00:27:32.359 would never be forgotten. 00:27:32.359 --> 00:27:43.519 The Polish government and those now running this Auschwitz memorial want to avoid that kind of horror ever happening again. 00:27:44.359 --> 00:27:47.339 And they are aware that with the passing of time, 00:27:48.079 --> 00:27:52.099 there can be complacency and passivity. 00:27:53.019 --> 00:27:58.419 And so they want this vivid memorial to the horror of war. 00:27:58.420 --> 00:28:03.519 Verse 28 and 29 is that grim memorial. 00:28:03.680 --> 00:28:04.900 There's a city in ruins. 00:28:05.019 --> 00:28:09.100 There's a king on a stick who's then buried under memorial stones. 00:28:09.200 --> 00:28:09.820 But why? 00:28:10.620 --> 00:28:12.240 It's still the question we need to ask. 00:28:12.360 --> 00:28:14.279 Why this memorial? 00:28:14.460 --> 00:28:18.660 Well, it's a reminder to Israel, to the nations, 00:28:18.660 --> 00:28:25.580 and to you and me today of the horror of finding ourselves under God's curse, 00:28:27.019 --> 00:28:35.240 of being under God's judgment for sinful opposition to God, 00:28:35.920 --> 00:28:41.480 for rejection of God's will and God's word and God's purpose. 00:28:41.480 --> 00:28:49.220 In Joshua's day, this stood as a solemn reminder that the people would never forget 00:28:49.220 --> 00:28:54.700 the realities, on the one hand, of sin and judgment upon disobedience, 00:28:55.180 --> 00:28:59.380 but positively grace and salvation that the people enjoy. 00:28:59.380 --> 00:29:07.800 We need to remember the horror of sin and judgment. 00:29:10.060 --> 00:29:17.400 Perhaps, like the testimony of many, you find spiritually you have been drifting during the pandemic, 00:29:17.540 --> 00:29:20.020 perhaps drifting away from God. 00:29:20.019 --> 00:29:24.759 Maybe as we find ourselves in all kinds of different circumstances, 00:29:24.759 --> 00:29:31.460 as we adjust constantly to what life in a new normal looks like with restrictions ongoing, 00:29:31.619 --> 00:29:36.359 perhaps there are sins that we have been tolerating. 00:29:38.440 --> 00:29:44.759 And we need this reminder of sin and judgment. 00:29:44.759 --> 00:29:49.779 The New Testament has its own grim memorial, 00:29:50.099 --> 00:29:52.460 which stands at the centre of our faith. 00:29:52.539 --> 00:29:54.839 It's the cross of the Lord Jesus. 00:29:55.160 --> 00:29:57.900 What do we have there as we reflect on the cross? 00:29:58.000 --> 00:30:02.079 We reflect on Jesus becoming a curse for us, 00:30:03.279 --> 00:30:07.400 bearing the sin of the world for us, 00:30:07.619 --> 00:30:12.319 enduring the judgment, the wrath of God for us. 00:30:12.319 --> 00:30:17.399 We recognise that we deserve it, but Jesus takes it. 00:30:18.059 --> 00:30:23.119 That Jesus shows incredible love and grace to us there at the cross, 00:30:23.200 --> 00:30:26.299 but the cross also reminds us of the seriousness of sin, 00:30:26.740 --> 00:30:29.859 that we'd be killing it, that we'd be running from it, 00:30:29.919 --> 00:30:35.859 we'd be turning away from it and turning to Jesus as Lord and Saviour. 00:30:35.859 --> 00:30:45.099 And that brings us to the final section and a return to the theme of the covenant. 00:30:45.539 --> 00:30:49.359 Let's think thoroughly about God's word and covenant relationship, 00:30:49.500 --> 00:30:55.139 verse 30 to 36, back to that frame through which to view Israel's life with God. 00:30:55.539 --> 00:30:57.859 And that frame is the covenant relationship, 00:30:58.659 --> 00:31:01.519 because what's happening here in 30 to 36 is covenant renewal. 00:31:27.299 and they were to hear the blessings and the curses of the law. 00:31:27.440 --> 00:31:30.920 Blessing for obedience, curse for disobedience. 00:31:30.920 --> 00:31:33.460 And we see that verse 35, who gets special mention? 00:32:04.119 --> 00:32:12.740 Attention is drawn to women, children, foreigners within the whole assembly. 00:32:13.680 --> 00:32:19.759 Here is a reminder of a grace from God that includes those who, 00:32:19.759 --> 00:32:24.099 by virtue of birth, would be excluded foreigners. 00:32:24.099 --> 00:32:26.099 But they are brought into the people of God. 00:32:26.599 --> 00:32:32.619 And there's a mercy that includes those most weak and most vulnerable in society. 00:32:32.759 --> 00:32:38.279 It's a reminder of God's generous mercy to any who will
