Hopefully the rain doesn't have you too sleepy this morning. 00:00:36.760 --> 00:00:41.939 We're going to stand up in order of the reading of God's word as I read Daniel chapter 8. 00:01:05.099 And I saw in the vision, and when I saw, I was in Susa, the citadel, which is in the province of Elam. 00:01:05.500 --> 00:01:08.200 And I saw in the vision, and I was at the Ulai Canal. 00:01:08.200 --> 00:01:13.900 I raised my eyes and saw, and behold, a ram standing on the bank of the canal. 00:01:14.579 --> 00:01:20.740 It had two horns, and both horns were high, but one was you would go about your life in faithfulness to Him. 00:06:47.960 --> 00:06:55.220 Here in Daniel chapter 8, God shows Daniel what is coming down the pipeline of human history. 00:06:55.360 --> 00:07:01.860 He's letting Daniel and us in on a sneak peek of what's to come over the next several centuries. 00:07:02.080 --> 00:07:06.060 And unfortunately for Daniel, this is not good news. 00:07:06.060 --> 00:07:10.860 Ever since coming into exile, you remember the context here of the book of Daniel. 00:07:11.180 --> 00:07:19.519 Ever since coming into exile in Babylon, Daniel has had his eyes set on these 70 years that's been promised in Jeremiah 00:07:19.519 --> 00:07:22.860 when these exiles would return to the promised land. 00:07:22.860 --> 00:07:30.480 But here, in this vision, the Lord seems to expand His understanding of human history just a little bit 00:07:30.480 --> 00:07:38.000 to show Him that what's coming next after this is bad followed by bad followed by bad. 00:07:38.720 --> 00:07:41.620 Worse followed by worse followed by worse. 00:07:41.780 --> 00:07:46.020 Evil followed by evil followed by evil. 00:07:46.139 --> 00:07:50.580 And He does so by showing Daniel three key figures in human history. 00:07:50.579 --> 00:07:53.159 This will be our outline this morning as we follow through this passage. 00:07:53.539 --> 00:07:56.099 Three key figures in human history. 00:07:56.259 --> 00:07:58.539 The ram, the goat, and the little horn. 00:07:59.060 --> 00:08:03.379 And we're going to take one, each one in order with its vision and the interpretation. 00:08:03.899 --> 00:08:06.300 So ram, goat, and little horn. 00:08:06.419 --> 00:08:12.279 And we're going to spend most of our time on this little horn because He seems to be the central figure in this vision. 00:08:12.439 --> 00:08:17.699 So first, verses 1 through 4 here of chapter 8, we see the ram. 00:08:17.699 --> 00:08:19.419 Look there with me starting in verse 1. 00:08:20.579 --> 00:08:24.879 Daniel says he has this vision in the third year of Belshazzar's reign. 00:08:25.079 --> 00:08:31.120 And in his vision, he was in Susa, the citadel, in the province of Elam at the Ulai Canal. 00:08:31.479 --> 00:08:34.059 Susa was the capital of Persia at the time. 00:08:34.259 --> 00:08:39.519 And as he raised up his eyes, he saw a ram standing on the bank of the canal. 00:08:39.659 --> 00:08:41.360 The ram had two horns. 00:08:41.919 --> 00:08:44.240 It was one horn up higher than the other horn. 00:08:44.240 --> 00:08:49.759 And it says the ram was charging 00:09:04.399 --> 00:09:06.860 he seeks help in understanding the vision. 00:09:06.860 --> 00:09:12.720 And I don't know about you, but I love when he does this because we don't have to guess at what these things mean. 00:09:12.840 --> 00:09:16.800 Gabriel, the angelic interpreter here, he makes it clear for us. 00:09:16.840 --> 00:09:18.240 He says, verse 20, 00:09:18.240 --> 00:09:28.159 Now we've seen these things before, haven't we? 00:09:28.820 --> 00:09:32.720 This is the third time now that we've seen these kings of Media and Persia. 00:09:32.799 --> 00:09:38.000 If you're keeping track here, the silver chest and arms from Nebuchadnezzar's dream in chapter 2. 00:09:38.720 --> 00:09:41.299 There are the second beast from chapter 7. 00:09:41.299 --> 00:09:45.939 And now this ram with the two horns, all of these are pointing to the same kingdom. 00:09:46.179 --> 00:09:49.079 It's the kingdom of the Medes and the Persians. 00:09:49.199 --> 00:09:52.719 And God says that kingdom, Daniel, is on the move. 00:09:53.599 --> 00:09:56.399 You remember last week, this second beast. 00:09:56.539 --> 00:10:00.759 It was the bear that was told to rise and devour much flesh. 00:10:00.819 --> 00:10:01.919 And here we see this ram. 00:10:02.019 --> 00:10:05.659 He's advancing to the west, to the north, to the south. 00:10:05.740 --> 00:10:07.939 He is on the attack. 00:10:07.940 --> 00:10:13.480 All these directions, as we look back in the history books, 00:10:13.580 --> 00:10:17.000 these are all areas that Medo-Persia eventually conquered. 00:10:17.120 --> 00:10:20.460 Babylon, Syria, Asia Minor to the west. 00:10:20.580 --> 00:10:24.040 Armenia and the areas by the Caspian Sea to the north. 00:10:24.160 --> 00:10:26.280 Egypt and Ethiopia to the south. 00:10:27.180 --> 00:10:31.340 But here, before any of this actually happens, 00:10:31.960 --> 00:10:34.880 God is revealing, he's showing to Daniel, 00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:39.299 that this powerful, battering ram is coming. 00:10:40.600 --> 00:10:42.939 Now just put yourself in Daniel's shoes for a minute. 00:10:43.659 --> 00:10:46.379 All of this is still future for him. 00:10:46.500 --> 00:10:50.919 And he's sitting here in the empire, the kingdom of Babylon. 00:10:51.139 --> 00:10:54.939 And God says, this kingdom is about to be overtaken. 00:10:56.179 --> 00:10:57.320 Daniel doesn't know when. 00:10:57.419 --> 00:10:59.039 He doesn't know exactly how. 00:10:59.139 --> 00:11:01.139 He doesn't know who's going to live, who's going to die. 00:11:01.139 --> 00:11:04.639 What exactly the details of this plan is. 00:11:04.740 --> 00:11:10.379 All he knows is that there is a sovereign God who sets up kings and takes kings down. 00:11:11.159 --> 00:11:14.139 A sovereign God who reigns and rules over all human history. 00:11:14.279 --> 00:11:16.679 A sovereign God who's worthy to be trusted, 00:11:16.879 --> 00:11:20.600 even when we don't know all the details of the plan. 00:11:21.960 --> 00:11:26.439 I think it also sheds a little bit of light on the story of Daniel and Belshazzar. 00:11:26.440 --> 00:11:32.740 That we read earlier with this feast of Belshazzar as he's feasting at the end of the kingdom of Babylon. 00:11:32.960 --> 00:11:36.620 And he sees this cryptic hand writing a message on the wall. 00:11:36.760 --> 00:11:39.540 And you remember this message of impending doom. 00:11:39.660 --> 00:11:45.520 And who was there providentially prepared, ready to interpret the message with confidence? 00:11:46.640 --> 00:11:47.200 It's Daniel. 00:11:47.200 --> 00:11:54.040 You see, Daniel is prepared here by God in chapter 8 for the events that we saw already previously 00:11:54.040 --> 00:11:57.040 with the end of the kingdom of Babylon. 00:11:57.300 --> 00:11:59.460 He didn't run and hide at this information. 00:12:00.259 --> 00:12:02.820 He didn't build a bunker and hide himself away. 00:12:02.980 --> 00:12:08.660 He simply, faithfully, waited for God to bring about what he had told him he would do. 00:12:08.820 --> 00:12:14.840 And when the opportunity came, providentially, to fill Belshazzar in, he did so. 00:12:14.840 --> 00:12:20.600 Now, as Daniel was considering this ram with two horns, he sees the second important figure, 00:12:21.060 --> 00:12:22.200 the male goat. 00:12:22.300 --> 00:12:23.080 Look there to verse 5. 00:12:24.300 --> 00:12:24.560 He says, 00:12:24.639 --> 00:12:29.800 A male goat came from the west across the face of the whole earth without touching the ground. 00:12:30.600 --> 00:12:34.139 And this goat had a conspicuous horn between his eyes. 00:12:34.320 --> 00:12:36.000 And the goat comes up to the ram. 00:12:36.080 --> 00:12:36.600 And what happens? 00:12:36.680 --> 00:12:38.200 He attacks the ram. 00:12:39.120 --> 00:12:41.080 It says he was enraged against him. 00:12:41.080 --> 00:12:43.139 And he broke these two horns. 00:12:43.259 --> 00:12:45.700 And the ram says, 00:12:51.280 --> 00:12:54.139 This goat became exceedingly great. 00:12:54.259 --> 00:13:00.759 Again, there's a progression here of evil to more evil to more evil. 00:13:01.080 --> 00:13:04.580 And again, leaning on Gabriel's help here, we can see the interpretation. 00:13:04.580 --> 00:13:10.160 At verse 21, he tells us that this goat is the king of Greece. 00:13:10.860 --> 00:13:12.639 We've seen this already, haven't we? 00:13:13.340 --> 00:13:16.720 If we're following the order that we've already seen, you remember the order here. 00:13:16.800 --> 00:13:19.800 Daniel is here living in the days of Babylon. 00:13:20.400 --> 00:13:22.740 The Medes and the Persians are coming next. 00:13:22.820 --> 00:13:23.980 They will conquer Babylon. 00:13:24.220 --> 00:13:26.379 But then there's an after them as well. 00:13:26.560 --> 00:13:27.360 And who's coming next? 00:13:27.639 --> 00:13:30.140 It's the kingdom of Greece. 00:13:30.139 --> 00:13:37.539 You remember from chapter 7, Greece was this leopard with four heads and with four wings. 00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:40.259 And it's a picture of speed and power. 00:13:40.419 --> 00:13:43.039 And you see that represented here as well by this goat. 00:13:43.120 --> 00:13:45.759 He's not even touching the ground as he advances. 00:13:46.779 --> 00:13:49.580 You know, when I read this, my mind is on basketball. 00:13:50.100 --> 00:13:55.299 And I immediately thought of a basketball player named Giannis Antetokounmpo. 00:13:55.539 --> 00:13:58.279 I don't know if any of you know that name or not. 00:13:58.279 --> 00:14:01.899 He's one of my favorite basketball players and he just happens to be Greek. 00:14:02.419 --> 00:14:06.579 No connection as far as I'm aware to this goat here in the passage. 00:14:07.179 --> 00:14:11.240 But I have seen Giannis Antetokounmpo grab a rebound on one end, 00:14:11.860 --> 00:14:15.919 take four dribbles, and dunk on somebody's head on the other end of the court. 00:14:16.000 --> 00:14:17.100 It's unreal. 00:14:17.319 --> 00:14:21.379 Just sheer speed and power and domination. 00:14:21.699 --> 00:14:26.059 That's what's happening here with Alexander the Great and the kingdom of Greece. 00:14:26.059 --> 00:14:28.879 This goat is Greece. 00:14:29.059 --> 00:14:32.059 Alexander the Great is the horn in the middle. 00:14:32.199 --> 00:14:38.399 And you might remember that the Greeks, they rose to power just quickly, rapidly. 00:14:39.239 --> 00:14:44.579 Maybe you've seen some of those videos of fireworks shows where they accidentally set off all the fireworks at once. 00:14:45.299 --> 00:14:48.759 It's this loud, big bang explosion. 00:14:48.899 --> 00:14:51.419 All of them explode at once and then the show's over. 00:14:51.419 --> 00:14:55.500 That's a little bit what Alexander the Great was like. 00:14:55.639 --> 00:15:05.319 He became general at age 21, conquered the ancient world by age 26, and then he was dead by age 33. 00:15:06.279 --> 00:15:07.699 Over as quickly as it started. 00:15:07.700 --> 00:15:12.180 But his influence on the ancient world was massive. 00:15:12.440 --> 00:15:19.240 And his death, it marked the beginning of what we call the Hellenistic period that echoed all the way through the Roman Empire 00:15:19.240 --> 00:15:21.960 and even to our modern Western civilization. 00:15:22.340 --> 00:15:27.960 In fact, after the death of Alexander the Great, there were 40 years worth of wars. 00:15:28.840 --> 00:15:33.879 And there were four major divisions that came from his Greek kingdom. 00:15:33.879 --> 00:15:35.679 Four major powers emerged. 00:15:35.820 --> 00:15:40.000 It was the Ptolemaic kingdom of Egypt and the Seleucid Empire in the east. 00:15:40.360 --> 00:15:44.960 The kingdom of Pergamum in Asia Minor and the kingdom of Macedon. 00:15:45.039 --> 00:15:49.019 His kingdom splintered into four divisions. 00:15:49.399 --> 00:15:53.659 Which is exactly what verse 8 said would happen. 00:15:53.960 --> 00:15:54.620 Look there with me. 00:15:54.620 --> 00:15:59.840 The goat, Greece, became exceedingly great. 00:16:00.480 --> 00:16:04.060 But when he was strong, the great horn, Alexander, was broken. 00:16:04.779 --> 00:16:11.620 And instead of it, there came up four conspicuous horns toward the four winds of heaven. 00:16:11.620 --> 00:16:18.200 Can we just pause here for a moment and reflect on the beauty of biblical prophecy? 00:16:18.200 --> 00:16:26.800 And you may look at me and say, Jonathan, there's nothing beautiful about rams and goats and horns getting broken and battering each other. 00:16:27.160 --> 00:16:29.080 I happen to disagree. 00:16:29.560 --> 00:16:29.720 Okay? 00:16:30.180 --> 00:16:30.860 Listen to this. 00:16:31.140 --> 00:16:39.500 This prophecy is so exact that critics of the Bible who want to discredit the word of God say, 00:16:39.759 --> 00:16:42.879 Well, this had to have been written after the fact. 00:16:42.879 --> 00:16:51.840 There is absolutely no way that anybody could predict with this degree of accuracy this many events in human history. 00:16:52.700 --> 00:16:55.279 And to which we would reply, absolutely, you're right. 00:16:55.340 --> 00:17:02.279 There is no way anybody could do that unless there is a God who reigns and rules over human history. 00:17:02.919 --> 00:17:07.059 A God who has orchestrated all of the events of human history. 00:17:07.059 --> 00:17:14.240 And a God who reveals his plan to his servants in his own wisdom and for their good. 00:17:14.339 --> 00:17:16.259 That's exactly what's happening here. 00:17:17.259 --> 00:17:20.679 The passages like this, whether or not we understand every detail of what's happening, 00:17:21.159 --> 00:17:25.759 passages like this ought to deepen our trust in the word of God. 00:17:26.779 --> 00:17:35.440 These prophecies ought to be like solid steel beams that support and uphold and undergird our confidence in God's word. for a little bit because he's the centerpiece here. 00:18:09.800 --> 00:18:12.539 We're told that he's another king of bold face. 00:18:12.660 --> 00:18:16.519 Verse 23 says he's cunning and he's out of the Seleucid Empire. 00:25:41.539 --> 00:25:44.559 He ruled over the Seleucid Empire from 175 B.C. 00:25:44.559 --> 00:25:46.959 until 164 B.C. 00:25:47.039 --> 00:25:52.939 And his desire was that everyone would embrace Hellenistic culture. 00:25:52.940 --> 00:25:58.240 which meant that everyone would worship the Greek gods, 00:25:58.360 --> 00:25:59.799 especially Zeus. 00:26:00.720 --> 00:26:06.160 In fact, Antiochus went so far as to set himself up as Zeus incarnate. 00:26:06.820 --> 00:26:08.940 He claimed to be God in the flesh. 00:26:10.000 --> 00:26:12.559 He gave himself the name Epiphanes. 00:26:12.640 --> 00:26:13.600 That's not his legal name. 00:26:13.900 --> 00:26:16.779 He titled himself Antiochus Epiphanes. 00:26:16.840 --> 00:26:18.120 And Epiphanes, you know what it means? 00:26:18.480 --> 00:26:19.980 It means God manifest. 00:26:19.980 --> 00:26:23.460 He said, I am God in the flesh. 00:26:24.019 --> 00:26:27.140 He stamped every coin in the empire with the 00:26:34.700 --> 00:26:36.980 that many of his contemporaries called him Epiphanes, 00:26:37.640 --> 00:26:39.420 which is a little twist on Epiphanes. 00:26:39.519 --> 00:26:40.960 And it doesn't days' time. 00:27:03.359 --> 00:27:07.000 He outlawed many of the requirements of God's law. 00:27:07.480 --> 00:27:10.379 He forbade them from practicing circumcision. 00:27:11.059 --> 00:27:13.500 He forbade them from holding their feasts. 00:27:13.639 --> 00:27:16.139 He forced the Jews to profane the Sabbath. 00:27:16.140 --> 00:27:20.140 Antiochus Epiphanes, he prevented sacrifices,
