Scripture understands what life is like, and what you and I are like. 00:00:53.020 --> 00:00:59.260 And we saw that in our passage last week, didn't we, in Matthew chapter 15, and verses 18 onwards. 00:01:01.340 --> 00:01:05.280 It says, what comes out of the mouth, what you speak about, what's on your lips, 00:01:05.280 --> 00:01:10.640 the reason that you speak in the way that you do, is 00:01:45.719 --> 00:01:48.319 They aren't doing the religious stuff they're supposed to do. 00:01:49.079 --> 00:01:50.140 They're not doing it properly. 00:01:51.359 --> 00:01:52.659 They're breaking the rules. 00:01:53.199 --> 00:01:57.159 But Jesus says, our big problem, and your big problem, 00:01:57.159 --> 00:02:00.579 it's not that you fail as through religious duties. 00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:03.799 And your biggest problem this week, 00:02:03.879 --> 00:02:07.319 it's not that you've not succeeded in what your goals were going to be, 00:02:08.319 --> 00:02:11.699 but your big problem, and my big problem, is my heart. 00:02:13.539 --> 00:02:15.579 So how does Jesus follow on from this list? 00:02:16.919 --> 00:02:19.060 And wonderfully, Jesus follows on from this list dirty, or angsty, or weak, and shamed? 00:03:01.859 --> 00:03:09.419 How do we move from all of that to feeling clean, and forgiven, and hopeful, and satisfied? 00:03:10.539 --> 00:03:15.400 How do we --> 00:03:55.540 and then the one in 32 to 39 is about bread, too. 00:03:55.920 --> 00:03:57.400 And then you've got the little meat in the middle, 00:03:57.819 --> 00:03:58.620 with the miracles. 00:04:00.040 --> 00:04:00.800 So let's get into it. 00:04:00.840 --> 00:04:01.939 Let's look at the first piece of bread, 00:04:02.020 --> 00:04:03.159 in verses 21 to 28. 00:04:03.159 --> 00:04:06.879 And you'll see Jesus on the move again. 00:04:08.079 --> 00:04:10.500 Verse 21, he went away from there, 00:04:10.560 --> 00:04:12.919 and he withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 00:04:14.519 --> 00:04:16.699 That's an interesting place for Jesus to go, 00:04:16.800 --> 00:04:17.639 because historically, 00:04:18.480 --> 00:04:19.159 these places, 00:04:21.079 --> 00:04:22.719 were where the armies of God, 00:04:23.040 --> 00:04:24.360 during times of famine, 00:04:24.879 --> 00:04:26.159 armies from these places, 00:04:26.959 --> 00:04:28.980 would raid Galilee and territory. 00:04:29.240 --> 00:04:30.040 It's terrible business. 00:04:31.040 --> 00:04:32.939 It's enemy-occupied territory. 00:04:34.020 --> 00:04:35.320 The two groups of people, 00:04:35.740 --> 00:04:37.240 these from Tyre and Sidon, 00:04:37.280 --> 00:04:38.160 they hated each other, 00:04:38.900 --> 00:04:40.980 and Jesus makes a deliberate trip there. 00:04:42.620 --> 00:04:44.420 It schools, 00:05:04.079 --> 00:05:04.699 there were only a couple of them, 00:05:04.759 --> 00:05:05.919 he went to thousands of schools, 00:05:06.599 --> 00:05:07.759 and taught about sexual health, 00:05:08.139 --> 00:05:09.899 in high schools in Dublin. 00:05:11.019 --> 00:05:12.719 He said he finally really enjoyed the job, 00:05:12.799 --> 00:05:15.000 apart from when teenagers saw him out in the street, 00:05:15.379 --> 00:05:16.079 they would say, 00:05:16.079 --> 00:05:17.699 ah, it's a sex man, 00:05:17.919 --> 00:05:18.699 or they just showed up. 00:05:19.500 --> 00:05:20.479 And he said that was fine, 00:05:20.599 --> 00:05:21.839 not when he was walking with his man, 00:05:22.240 --> 00:05:24.339 or walking with his girlfriend. 00:05:25.659 --> 00:05:27.060 It's hard to get a --> 00:05:34.420 And Jesus is quite well-known, 00:05:34.519 --> 00:05:36.120 and he's well-known in a place that is, 00:05:37.079 --> 00:05:38.240 the enemy of God's people. 00:05:39.900 --> 00:05:41.079 And so this Canaanite woman, 00:05:41.920 --> 00:05:43.160 who knows about Jesus, 00:05:43.860 --> 00:05:44.500 who he is, 00:05:44.720 --> 00:05:45.960 hears that he's coming, 00:05:46.500 --> 00:05:47.840 and goes up to him. 00:05:49.259 --> 00:05:50.199 It's really interesting, isn't it? 00:05:50.560 --> 00:05:52.660 And Matthew calls her a Canaanite woman. 00:05:54.319 --> 00:05:55.480 That word, Canaanite, 00:05:55.519 --> 00:05:57.040 doesn't appear anywhere else in the New Testament. 00:05:58.040 --> 00:05:59.520 It's an archaic word. 00:05:59.660 --> 00:06:00.840 They didn't use it at the time. 00:06:01.860 --> 00:06:03.680 It points the reader backwards, 00:06:04.080 --> 00:06:06.520 and pulls them back into the story of Israel. 00:06:08.160 --> 00:06:10.720 It's like a journalist writing an article on Russia, 00:06:11.760 --> 00:06:13.200 and calling it USSR. 00:06:15.080 --> 00:06:16.939 We think that was odd, wouldn't we? 00:06:16.960 --> 00:06:18.740 It's not called USSR anymore. 00:06:19.400 --> 00:06:20.180 He says, what are you doing? 00:06:20.180 --> 00:06:22.879 What point are you trying to make by using that word? 00:06:23.720 --> 00:06:24.600 What are you on about? 00:06:24.660 --> 00:06:26.020 And that's what Matthew is doing here. 00:06:26.019 --> 00:06:28.479 He's taking an Old Testament word, 00:06:28.759 --> 00:06:30.439 and he's putting it in the Gospel. 00:06:31.879 --> 00:06:32.879 And when we spot it, 00:06:32.979 --> 00:06:33.959 it's to make us think. 00:06:34.379 --> 00:06:35.799 Canaanite, that's a word that's not used. 00:06:35.919 --> 00:06:36.819 What was a Canaanite? 00:06:37.359 --> 00:06:38.319 Well, it was an enemy. 00:06:39.519 --> 00:06:41.319 It was an enemy of God's people. 00:06:41.500 --> 00:06:42.579 It was an idolater. 00:06:43.599 --> 00:06:45.279 The Canaanites were unclean. 00:06:46.299 --> 00:06:47.779 And this Canaanite woman, 00:06:48.539 --> 00:06:49.819 is shouting at Jesus. 00:06:51.539 --> 00:06:52.019 Repeatedly. 00:06:52.019 --> 00:06:56.560 She surprisingly says to Jesus, 00:06:56.659 --> 00:06:57.500 do you see what she says? 00:06:59.240 --> 00:07:00.120 Oh Lord, 00:07:01.339 --> 00:07:02.139 Son of David. 00:07:04.639 --> 00:07:06.180 So you now became that woman, 00:07:06.659 --> 00:07:10.019 using the language of the Lord's people, 00:07:10.180 --> 00:07:10.740 Son of David. 00:07:10.740 --> 00:07:14.900 She is from the enemy of the Lord's people, 00:07:15.040 --> 00:07:18.579 and yet she takes the language of the Lord's people on her lips. 00:07:19.699 --> 00:07:20.840 And she asks for, 00:07:20.900 --> 00:07:21.519 can you see it? 00:07:21.680 --> 00:07:22.060 Mercy. 00:07:23.819 --> 00:07:24.259 Mercy. 00:07:25.620 --> 00:08:57.379 so we can get out of here? 00:08:57.379 --> 00:09:00.240 She is drawing attention to us, 00:09:00.299 --> 00:09:01.580 we've come for a break, 00:09:02.080 --> 00:09:03.879 she's causing a scene, 00:09:04.279 --> 00:09:05.500 she's speaking loudly, 00:09:05.960 --> 00:09:07.059 she's an irritant, 00:09:07.399 --> 00:09:09.419 this woman is an annoyance, 00:09:10.299 --> 00:09:11.360 we just want to be left alone, 00:09:11.620 --> 00:09:11.980 heal her, 00:09:12.039 --> 00:09:12.500 get rid of her, 00:09:12.539 --> 00:09:12.759 Jesus. 00:09:15.059 --> 00:09:16.419 So Jesus responds with this, 00:09:16.480 --> 00:09:18.799 this woman whose daughter is severely possessed, 00:09:18.939 --> 00:09:19.899 and in a terrible state, 00:09:20.240 --> 00:09:20.580 mercy, 00:09:20.740 --> 00:09:21.080 mercy, 00:09:21.279 --> 00:09:21.559 mercy, 00:09:21.559 --> 00:09:23.000 my daughter is possessed, 00:09:23.279 --> 00:09:23.919 just get rid of her, 00:09:23.919 --> 00:09:24.199 Jesus. 00:09:26.039 --> 00:09:27.399 But he says to her, 00:09:27.439 --> 00:09:27.779 doesn't he, 00:09:27.879 --> 00:09:28.439 shockingly, 00:09:29.360 --> 00:09:31.439 I was sent to the lost sheep of Israel, 00:09:31.500 --> 00:09:32.539 and that's his first response. 00:09:35.159 --> 00:09:37.299 You need to understand the movement of the Bible, 00:09:37.479 --> 00:09:39.019 God chose the people of Israel. 00:09:40.319 --> 00:09:41.639 God chose the people of Israel 00:09:41.639 --> 00:09:43.240 to be his treasured possession. 00:09:44.939 --> 00:09:46.819 And they were to be like a greenhouse, 00:09:46.819 --> 00:09:48.759 you know what a greenhouse is? 00:09:49.679 --> 00:09:52.480 A greenhouse is where you grow your plants, 00:09:52.579 --> 00:09:53.500 it's a hothouse, 00:09:53.919 --> 00:09:56.319 where the plants grow and develop, 00:09:56.519 --> 00:09:57.559 and are nurtured. 00:09:58.439 --> 00:09:59.779 And then when they're nurtured enough, 00:09:59.860 --> 00:10:00.219 and develop, 00:10:00.399 --> 00:10:03.019 you take the plants outside the greenhouse, 00:10:03.179 --> 00:10:03.860 into the garden, 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:04.879 and they flourish. woman moves closer, 00:11:15.580 --> 00:11:17.700 and this time she falls to his speech, 00:11:18.020 --> 00:11:19.100 and verse 25, 00:11:19.640 --> 00:11:22.660 she says these three amazing words. --> 00:12:12.860 or to the doctor. 00:12:13.659 --> 00:12:16.419 And you are placing your child, 00:12:16.559 --> 00:12:17.639 and all your hopes, 00:12:17.720 --> 00:12:19.500 into the hands of that doctor and nurse. 00:12:19.839 --> 00:12:21.980 And the woman brings all her hopes to Jesus, 00:12:21.980 --> 00:12:24.659 and it's a heart-rending request, 00:12:24.740 --> 00:12:25.200 isn't it?
