Before I read it, I want to make a few introductory comments. 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:36.420 Beginning by saying that God's Word is truly magnificent. 00:00:37.640 --> 00:00:45.539 If you've been a student of God's Word for any measure of time, you probably already realize this in some ways. 00:00:46.679 --> 00:00:54.379 But I will say, having been a pastor here now for 16 years and having the great privilege of day in and day out, 00:00:54.380 --> 00:01:00.800 getting the opportunity to study and to teach His Word, I'm just continually amazed. 00:01:01.480 --> 00:01:05.140 It is a wonderful, wonderful book. 00:01:05.799 --> 00:01:15.859 We can marvel at it just for its literary structure and its prose and the beautiful choice of words. 00:01:15.859 --> 00:01:22.280 Anybody who's just a student of literature could really enjoy this book. 00:01:22.920 --> 00:01:28.219 But more than that, it speaks to us powerful words. 00:01:28.359 --> 00:01:30.539 Words that bring life. 00:01:30.540 --> 00:01:37.460 Today's text, verses 31 through 42, if you're already kind of giving it a skim, 00:01:38.380 --> 00:01:44.440 could just seem like an appendix to the story told at the beginning of the chapter 00:01:44.440 --> 00:01:49.840 where Jesus stops at a well and interacts with a Samaritan woman. 00:01:49.960 --> 00:01:53.860 We spent two weeks on the beginning of that chapter. 00:01:53.859 --> 00:01:59.260 And some of you may wonder, why not just include that in the totality of it? 00:01:59.519 --> 00:02:03.000 Why are we moving so slow through John chapter 4? 00:02:03.099 --> 00:02:04.920 Some of you may be thinking. 00:02:05.099 --> 00:02:10.900 And so my answer to you is because God's Word is magnificent. 00:02:11.439 --> 00:02:19.960 There are things to notice in these verses and to spend the time that we can spend noticing them. 00:02:19.960 --> 00:02:25.420 In fact, I very often think we move too quickly through our verse-by-verse expositions 00:02:25.420 --> 00:02:31.540 as I discover things later that I want to go back and cover again. 00:02:31.960 --> 00:02:35.400 We recently concluded our study of the book of Romans. 00:02:35.520 --> 00:02:40.180 And when I got to the end of it, the impulse of my heart was, 00:02:40.379 --> 00:02:41.719 let's just start back over again. 00:02:41.860 --> 00:02:44.080 Let's just go right back to the beginning. 00:02:44.080 --> 00:02:50.820 I think I'll do a better job at it the second time through. 00:02:52.040 --> 00:02:55.920 And leading up to our text today, and in our text today, 00:02:56.360 --> 00:03:04.620 starting in chapter 2, we have seen a series of misunderstandings in John's writing. 00:03:05.420 --> 00:03:09.180 So first we see John chapter 2 and verse 20, 00:03:09.180 --> 00:03:14.020 after Jesus has said some things about the temple being torn down 00:03:14.020 --> 00:03:16.500 and it being raised up again in three days, 00:03:16.580 --> 00:03:19.500 and he's talking about his death and his resurrection, 00:03:20.219 --> 00:03:22.020 there's a misunderstanding. 00:03:22.760 --> 00:03:24.500 We just see the Jews then said, 00:03:24.580 --> 00:03:27.580 it has taken 46 years to build this temple, 00:03:28.100 --> 00:03:31.300 and you will raise it up in three days? 00:03:31.400 --> 00:03:33.080 They miss the point. 00:03:33.420 --> 00:03:35.140 They're hard of hearing. 00:03:35.139 --> 00:03:39.659 They don't understand the spiritual thing that Jesus is there teaching. 00:03:40.719 --> 00:03:43.819 Then in John chapter 3 and verse 4, 00:03:44.399 --> 00:03:49.619 there Jesus is talking about the need to be born again. 00:03:49.699 --> 00:03:54.179 Again, a spiritual reality that he's trying to teach to Nicodemus. 00:03:54.299 --> 00:03:55.239 And Nicodemus says, 00:03:55.379 --> 00:03:58.179 how can a man be born when he is old? 00:03:58.679 --> 00:04:02.219 Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born? 00:04:02.219 --> 00:04:04.580 A misunderstanding, 00:04:05.520 --> 00:04:11.300 not an illumination of what Jesus is trying to say to him. 00:04:12.319 --> 00:04:15.379 And then John chapter 4 and verse 11, 00:04:15.539 --> 00:04:17.839 this is the Samaritan woman, 00:04:18.079 --> 00:04:22.600 and Jesus tells her that he can give her living water, 00:04:22.860 --> 00:04:23.620 and she says, 00:04:23.740 --> 00:04:25.959 sir, you have nothing to draw water with, 00:04:26.139 --> 00:04:28.839 and the well is deep. 00:04:28.839 --> 00:04:32.299 Where do you get that living water? 00:04:32.839 --> 00:04:34.739 And we talked about how Jesus himself, 00:04:35.519 --> 00:04:38.500 the spiritual reality is living water, 00:04:38.639 --> 00:04:42.699 fully satisfying for her need. 00:04:42.819 --> 00:04:44.579 And then later on in verse 15, 00:04:45.379 --> 00:04:46.399 she says again, 00:04:46.539 --> 00:04:50.000 sir, give me this water so that I will not be thirsty 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:53.399 or have to come here to draw water. 00:04:53.399 --> 00:04:56.359 And then in our text today, 00:04:56.539 --> 00:04:58.459 in verse 33, 00:04:59.399 --> 00:05:01.779 Jesus says that he's not hungry. 00:05:01.899 --> 00:05:04.120 They've been sent away to find food, 00:05:04.219 --> 00:05:06.979 and he says that he's not hungry, 00:05:07.339 --> 00:05:10.039 and the disciples misunderstand what he's trying to say to them, 00:05:10.120 --> 00:05:12.039 which we'll look at a bit further. 00:05:12.239 --> 00:05:12.620 And they say, 00:05:12.679 --> 00:05:15.079 has anyone brought him something to eat? 00:05:15.259 --> 00:05:17.120 I thought we went off to go get the food, 00:05:17.199 --> 00:05:20.579 and yet he seems no longer to be hungry. 00:05:20.579 --> 00:05:23.060 Hard of hearing. 00:05:25.459 --> 00:05:26.099 Misunderstood. 00:05:27.060 --> 00:05:28.379 And so when we come to texts like this, 00:05:28.439 --> 00:05:31.060 it's very easy to read the text 00:05:31.060 --> 00:05:34.519 and read phrases like in verse 34, 00:05:34.659 --> 00:05:38.399 my food is to do the will of him who sent me 00:05:38.399 --> 00:05:41.759 and to accomplish his work. 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:43.259 And to not understand it. 00:05:43.759 --> 00:05:47.180 To scratch our heads at what it means. 00:05:47.180 --> 00:05:52.079 And you'll likely in your life read past phrases like this 00:05:52.079 --> 00:05:52.540 and go, 00:05:52.680 --> 00:05:53.560 well, that's strange. 00:05:54.500 --> 00:05:56.959 And go on and not visit it. 00:05:57.840 --> 00:06:01.879 That's why it's good that we press us to sit down 00:06:01.879 --> 00:06:06.460 and really take a look at a text as we study it together. 00:06:07.660 --> 00:06:10.500 My food is to do the will of him who sent me 00:06:10.500 --> 00:06:14.360 and to accomplish his work. 00:06:14.360 --> 00:06:17.800 So as we misunderstand these things, 00:06:17.860 --> 00:06:20.600 there's a couple of possibilities for why we misunderstand them. 00:06:20.680 --> 00:06:23.240 Number one, it could just make no sense 00:06:23.240 --> 00:06:25.720 because we are spiritually dead. 00:06:26.379 --> 00:06:32.060 We don't have God's Spirit to help us discern God's Word. 00:06:32.460 --> 00:06:35.680 Our ears haven't been brought to life. 00:06:35.960 --> 00:06:39.699 Our eyes haven't been brought to life in order to see. 00:06:39.699 --> 00:06:44.719 And so we just don't understand these types of hard sayings. 00:06:45.740 --> 00:06:48.680 It's also possible that it makes no sense to us 00:06:48.680 --> back to work as an ESOL teacher. 00:07:26.100 --> 00:07:28.660 And her job is to partner with students. 00:07:28.720 --> 00:07:31.980 So she's going into classes and she's partnering with students students were asked what the seven continents were, 00:07:42.620 --> 00:07:46.019 10th graders, seven continents, and none of them knew. 00:07:46.019 --> 00:07:50.599 And she just was milling around the room just trying to help random students 00:07:50.599 --> 00:07:54.459 and figuring out if they knew what this continent is. 00:07:54.799 --> 00:07:57.159 And a group she was talking to had no idea. 00:07:58.039 --> 00:07:59.259 And we were musing about that. 00:07:59.339 --> 00:08:01.459 How is it that 10th graders don't know this? 00:08:01.560 --> 00:08:04.240 And one of my answers to it was, well, it's in their pocket. 00:08:06.379 --> 00:08:10.819 Why know and learn anything when you can access it with just a short query? 00:08:11.919 --> 00:08:13.319 And I think we do this as Christians. 00:08:13.319 --> 00:08:15.920 We don't take the time to really understand. 00:08:16.159 --> 00:08:20.680 We don't let the Word soak deep into us. 00:08:21.099 --> 00:08:22.219 Meditate on it. 00:08:22.360 --> 00:08:25.779 We are confused, so we run quickly to find an answer. 00:08:26.120 --> 00:08:28.219 Or we just decide it doesn't really matter right now. 00:08:28.319 --> 00:08:58.139 We just have become apathetic and stopped really caring that Jesus says things and he does things, 00:08:58.199 --> 00:09:01.399 in the case of John, that are often confusing. 00:09:02.199 --> 00:09:05.439 And I just don't want to put the effort in at all. 00:09:05.440 --> 00:09:11.500 Third possibility is that we do, in fact, put in the work. 00:09:11.940 --> 00:09:18.280 And the Spirit illuminates the text for us and we are greatly benefited by it. 00:09:19.280 --> 00:09:23.880 Of course, I have concern for the previous of those two possibilities. 00:09:24.120 --> 00:09:29.520 I hope and pray that we all find ourselves in that third category. 00:09:29.519 --> 00:09:34.519 But in the first case of concern, I've been praying and always do pray. 00:09:34.620 --> morning, you may not have repented yet of your sin and placed your faith in Jesus Christ. 00:09:50.320 --> 00:09:55.860 And that he would make it come alive to you as you come to life. 00:09:57.320 --> 00:10:02.360 In the second case, I want to turn your attention away from worldliness. 00:10:02.500 --> 00:10:04.680 We have such few moments together. 00:10:05.720 --> 00:10:11.360 It seems so often that the gathering of the church just isn't sufficient for the task. 00:10:11.360 --> 00:10:20.080 And so we ask that the Spirit would work mightily in our lives in these moments that we have as we come together and open God's Word. 00:10:20.800 --> 00:10:25.740 I want to show you that this is a magnificent Word. 00:10:25.899 --> 00:10:32.240 And I also want to show you that you can study and 00:13:41.220 --> 00:13:45.879 And the Samaritans were half-breed Jewish people, right? 00:13:45.980 --> 00:13:52.420 They're the ancestors of those who returned from captivity and bred with the people of the land, 00:13:52.540 --> 00:13:54.120 and they were seen as unclean. 00:13:54.399 --> 00:13:57.540 They were seen as outside the grace of God. 00:13:57.539 --> 00:14:05.779 This is Christ's first, John's record, cross-cultural ministry effort. 00:14:06.360 --> 00:14:08.360 And we believe that he was led there. 00:14:08.439 --> 00:14:13.659 The text says that he had to go this way, and there were actually roads that went around this region. 00:14:14.199 --> 00:14:18.299 Most Jews would have traveled around the region of Samaria. 00:14:19.000 --> 00:14:24.659 And yet he goes through it, and he has this divine encounter with this woman 00:14:24.659 --> 00:14:30.500 who has had five husbands and now is living with a man who is not her husband. 00:14:31.279 --> 00:14:35.399 And so it's understood that she was coming to the well in the middle of the day to draw water. 00:14:35.480 --> 00:14:37.620 Instead of when it would have normally been drawn, 00:14:37.779 --> 00:14:40.879 either in the early hours or the late, when it was cool, 00:14:40.879 --> 00:14:47.199 she's coming because she's avoiding the shame of being around other people from Sychar. 00:14:47.299 --> 00:14:50.919 She's avoiding the talking of the other women. 00:14:52.100 --> 00:14:54.419 She's got great sin. 00:14:54.659 --> 00:14:58.500 Jesus exposes that sin at the beginning of the chapter 00:14:58.500 --> 00:15:02.699 and then offers to her greater mercy, 00:15:03.079 --> 00:15:10.559 more abundant grace in the form of this living water conversation that he has with her. 00:15:12.019 water jar. 00:15:21.659 --> 00:15:24.159 She goes back to the village and she begins to ask, 00:15:24.240 --> 00:15:26.740 which he had said to her that he was the Messiah, 00:15:26.919 --> meanwhile. 00:15:43.279 --> 00:15:44.919 The disciples have returned. 00:15:44.919 --> 00:15:48.419 They're marveling that Jesus is talking to a woman, 00:15:48.579 --> 00:15:50.000 and she's gone into town, 00:15:50.139 --> 00:15:51.759 and they're there, 00:15:51.879 --> 00:15:53.079 and they're waiting. 00:15:53.259 --> 00:15:57.860 And so you see in our text that people from the town come out to him, 00:15:58.079 --> 00:16:02.919 and this is the meanwhile conversation that's going on. 00:16:02.919 --> 00:16:09.199 Now, I'm going to spare you the big, large, chiastic talk. 00:16:09.519 00:16:15.379 --> 00:16:18.419 But the book of John is laid out in a chiastic structure, 00:16:18.579 --> 00:16:21.419 which means the beginning and the end correspond to each other, 00:16:21.459 --> 00:16:24.339 and it continues to work itself toward a center. 00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:29.259 And the book has within it chiastic structures. 00:16:29.259 --> 00:16:29.899 Right? 00:16:30.319 --> 00:16:32.519 So we have before us, 00:16:32.799 --> 00:16:36.059 beginning in verse 31 and going through verse 42, 00:16:36.580 --> 00:16:38.720 another chiastic structure. 00:16:39.340 --> 00:16:43.059 This has become a talk at our table at our house. 00:16:43.779 --> 00:16:46.360 The boys are trying to find chiasms everywhere now. 00:16:46.860 --> 00:16:48.919 And I'm trying to emphasize that they're not everywhere, 00:16:49.299 --> 00:16:51.259 but we want to see them when they are there 00:16:51.259 --> 00:16:53.799 because it's a really common literary structure, 00:17:52.519 my food is through the will of him who sent me, 00:17:52.599 --> 00:17:54.700 and to accomplish his work, 00:17:54.740 --> 00:17:58.099 we'll talk about what that work is, 00:17:58.599 --> 00:18:02.579 corresponds to what they say about Jesus, 00:18:03.099 --> 00:18:03.740 the Samaritans. 00:18:03.879 --> 00:18:08.700 This is indeed the Savior of the world. 00:18:09.440 --> form of white clothing, 00:18:33.879 --> 00:18:35.059 and therefore it would have actually looked, 00:18:35.139 --> 00:18:36.799 and they came down the road from Sikar, 00:18:36.879 --> 00:18:40.879 it would have looked like the fields were ripe for harvest. 00:18:40.880 --> 00:18:43.980 I don't know for sure if that's the case, 00:18:44.180 --> 00:18:46.980 but we think that these people are coming out of the town, 00:18:47.060 --> 00:18:48.860 and they can see this happening. 00:18:49.480 --> 00:18:50.120 Verse 39 says, 00:18:50.320 --> 00:18:53.920 many Samaritans from that town
