they didn't know who it was. 00:04:14.780 --> 00:04:16.319 Cam Newton was right there. 00:04:16.980 --> 00:04:21.740 And it was really easy to miss it, even if you were standing right beside him. 00:04:23.180 --> 00:04:26.259 That same thing can happen with Jesus, can't it? 00:04:26.259 --> 00:04:32.379 For different reasons, perhaps, and in different contexts, we can be near Jesus. 00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:34.620 We can know lots about him. 00:04:34.680 --> 00:04:36.579 We can cheer for his team. 00:04:36.680 --> 00:04:40.060 But we may not truly know him. 00:04:41.399 --> 00:04:46.099 That's where the tension develops in this story that we're going to read this morning. 00:04:46.399 --> 00:04:49.159 As we read this story, it's still Easter Sunday. 00:04:50.599 --> 00:04:54.659 Remember, in Luke's account, no one yet has met Jesus. 00:04:54.660 --> 00:04:57.020 He hasn't appeared to anyone. 00:04:57.400 --> 00:04:58.780 Several have seen the empty tomb. 00:04:58.939 --> 00:05:02.600 But so far, no one has seen the risen Jesus. 00:05:03.320 --> 00:05:06.340 And then, he shows up. 00:05:06.920 --> 00:05:08.380 Luke 24, verse 13. 00:05:08.540 --> 00:05:14.160 That very day, two of them who'd been in the room hearing these reports from the empty tomb, 00:05:14.460 --> 00:05:19.580 two of those were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 00:05:20.240 --> 00:05:23.420 And they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 00:05:23.420 --> 00:05:30.780 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 00:05:30.860 --> 00:05:34.640 Jesus himself, he showed up. 00:05:35.300 --> 00:05:42.400 Two of those followers of Jesus who've been in Jerusalem and hearing reports are now walking home a few miles. 00:05:43.240 --> 00:05:45.280 And Jesus himself shows up. 00:05:45.560 --> 00:05:49.040 And we expect next to be, ta-da, it's me. 00:05:49.040 --> 00:05:52.280 Verse 16. 00:05:52.480 --> 00:05:56.500 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 00:05:58.100 --> 00:06:05.980 When you see that passive voice in the Bible, it often is referring to God's work. 00:06:06.939 --> 00:06:07.780 What God is doing. 00:06:07.879 --> 00:06:10.740 Somehow keeping them from recognizing him. 00:06:10.740 --> 00:06:13.280 We know Jesus' resurrected body is a bit different. 00:06:13.379 --> 00:06:16.840 But there's also divine activity going on here. 00:06:16.960 --> 00:06:19.319 We don't know exactly why right now. 00:06:19.379 --> 00:06:24.100 But I Jesus, said to them, 00:06:30.519 --> 00:06:34.980 What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk? 00:06:34.980 --> 00:06:39.680 And they stood still looking sad. 00:06:40.220 --> 00:06:43.680 Jesus enters into their situation and he listens. 00:06:44.860 --> 00:06:47.220 There's a lot we could learn from that, by the way, isn't there? 00:06:48.040 --> Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened these days? 00:07:11.680 --> 00:07:16.240 I want you to feel the pain of what they're about to say to Jesus. 00:07:16.980 --> 00:07:19.639 There's a lot of things they've seen happening in Jerusalem. 00:07:19.839 --> 00:07:23.699 And this is more evidence of the historical reality of Luke's account. 00:07:24.159 --> 00:07:27.699 Listen, these things, everybody knows about them, right? 00:07:28.779 --> 00:07:29.439 Everybody's talking. 00:07:29.519 --> 00:07:30.399 You can ask anyone. 00:07:30.399 --> 00:07:31.899 They'll tell you --> 00:07:52.819 A man who was a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all the people. 00:07:53.219 --> 00:07:58.179 And how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death and crucified him. 00:07:58.180 --> 00:08:02.360 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. 00:08:03.360 --> 00:08:07.160 Yes, and besides all this, it's now the third day since these things happened. 00:08:08.160 --> 00:08:10.500 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. 00:08:10.860 --> 00:08:12.439 They were at the tomb early in the morning. 00:08:12.439 --> 00:08:18.740 And when they did not find his body, they came back saying they'd even seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. 00:08:19.740 --> 00:08:23.980 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said. 00:08:24.079 --> 00:08:27.139 But him they did not see. 00:08:27.139 --> 00:08:32.080 Y'all, these are the things we talk about and celebrate. 00:08:32.480 --> 00:08:35.659 Usually when you give this report of Easter morning, it's with joy. 00:08:35.759 --> 00:08:36.600 He's not here. 00:08:36.679 --> 00:08:38.620 The angels told the women he's alive. 00:08:39.120 --> 00:08:42.000 But they're discouraged, aren't they? 00:08:43.120 --> 00:08:45.699 Him they did not see. 00:08:45.700 --> 00:08:50.960 We're usually celebrating our redemption by Jesus. 00:08:51.120 --> 00:08:53.259 His mighty words and deeds. 00:08:53.460 --> 00:08:54.040 His death. 00:08:54.160 --> 00:08:55.160 His empty tomb. 00:08:55.580 --> 00:08:57.259 And they've witnessed all of it. 00:08:57.360 --> 00:08:59.120 But they're sad. 00:09:00.400 --> 00:09:01.120 Let down. 00:09:01.960 --> 00:09:03.379 Missing Jesus. 00:09:04.720 --> 00:09:06.920 He's crucifixion. 00:09:27.699 --> 00:09:30.059 So what keeps them from recognizing Jesus? 00:09:32.519 --> 00:09:34.659 Disappointed expectations for one. 00:09:35.699 --> 00:09:38.299 They thought he would do different things in their lives. 00:09:38.299 --> 00:09:45.479 And the fact that he's not delivering them from Roman oppression is frustrating and confusing to them. 00:09:46.799 --> 00:09:49.419 They had hoped that. 00:09:49.679 --> 00:09:55.019 But the cross put that hope out really fast, really strong. 00:09:55.139 --> 00:09:56.339 That's why they're still down. 00:09:57.039 --> 00:10:00.120 Have you felt that in your own life before? 00:10:00.120 --> 00:10:10.220 Some of you keep coming to church but deep in your heart you gave up on a living Jesus years ago. there's more than a couple of you in here today who find it hard to see Jesus because of the marred vision of him that someone in church leadership has given you at some point in your life. 00:10:37.659 --> 00:10:46.159 How about the chief priests and leaders gave the Messiah, the Son of God, over to be killed? 00:10:46.159 --> 00:10:49.799 You think that could leave your hopes discouraged? 00:10:50.759 --> 00:10:54.039 Your vision of Jesus disenchanted really fast? 00:10:54.120 --> 00:10:54.860 I bet it would. 00:10:54.980 --> 00:10:56.559 Maybe you've felt that. tailgate that day who could have told you the score of every game that Cam Newton ever played in. 00:12:29.559 --> 00:12:31.579 Could have given you lots of statistics on him. 00:12:31.580 --> 00:12:33.220 Knew lots of things about him. 00:12:33.400 --> 00:12:38.080 But when he walked by without his name on the jersey, they didn't know him. 00:12:39.720 --> 00:12:43.900 Kids, is Jesus just some questions and answers that you've memorized? 00:12:45.139 --> 00:12:50.060 Is Jesus just someone you've heard some stories about when you come to church? 00:12:50.059 --> 00:13:00.219 Or have you actually met Jesus in your life and seen how much you need him to die and rise for you? 00:13:00.220 --> 00:13:06.580 Are you starting to feel a little uncomfortable for Cleopas and his companion? slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken. 00:13:44.360 --> 00:13:50.300 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory? 00:13:51.480 --> 00:13:59.639 And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. 00:14:00.399 --> 00:14:08.779 One of the reasons Jesus is not revealed to them right away is that apparently he has a sermon that he wants them to hear and to understand. 00:14:08.779 --> 00:14:14.079 Remember, he's mighty in word and in deed. 00:14:14.439 --> think we get some idea from the way his followers 00:17:12.259 --> 00:17:13.919 will write things in the New Testament. 00:17:14.099 --> 00:17:16.579 They make many connections back to the Old Testament, 00:17:16.759 --> 00:17:19.279 I suspect, because many of them heard them from him. 00:17:19.279 --> 00:17:22.319 The words here indicate that Jesus told them 00:17:22.319 --> 00:17:25.019 how the whole story of the Hebrew Scriptures 00:17:25.019 --> 00:17:26.879 pointed to a Messiah 00:17:26.879 --> 00:17:29.480 who would die to rescue God's people 00:17:29.480 --> 00:17:32.339 and reunite them to God in covenant relationship. 00:17:36.579 --> 00:17:38.200 Maybe he started with Genesis. 00:17:39.819 --> 00:17:43.559 How God's people were created for a relationship with him 00:17:43.559 --> 00:17:46.319 that they broke by eating the fruit, 00:17:46.319 --> 00:17:50.519 and how in that moment God's promise to fix that relationship 00:17:50.519 --> 00:17:51.799 would come at a cost. 00:17:52.639 --> 00:17:56.480 The painfully bruised heel of the one promised 00:17:56.480 --> 00:17:58.980 to crush the head of the serpent. 00:17:59.980 --> 00:18:02.519 Maybe he mentioned
